Beschreibung: Geochemical analyses of carbonate minerals yield multiple parameters which can be used to estimate the temperature and water composition at which they formed. Analysis of fluid trapped in minerals is a potentially powerful tool to reconstruct paleotemperatures as well as diagenetic and hydrothermal processes, as these could represent the parent fluid. Internal fluids play important roles during the alteration of carbonate fossils, lowering energetic barriers associated with resetting of clumped isotopes, as well as mediating the transport of elements during diagenesis. Here, we explore the behavior of the ∆47–∆48 “dual‐clumped” isotope thermometer during fluid‐carbonate interaction and demonstrate that it is highly sensitive to the water/carbonate ratio, behaving as a linear system in “rock buffered” alteration, and as a decoupled system in water‐dominated systems due to non‐linear mixing effects in ∆48. Dry heating experiments show that the extrapolated “heated” end‐member is indistinguishable from the predicted ∆47 and ∆48 value expected for the experimental temperature. Furthermore, we evaluate two common laboratory sampling methods for their ability to thermally alter samples. We find that the temperature of the commonly used crushing cells used to vapourize water for fluid inclusion δ18O analyses is insufficient to cause fluid‐carbonate oxygen isotope exchange, demonstrating its suitability for analyses of fluid inclusions in carbonates. We also find that belemnites sampled with a hand‐drill yield significantly warmer paleotemperatures than those sampled with mortar and pestle. We conclude that thermally‐driven internal fluid‐carbonate exchange occurs indistinguishably from isotopic equilibrium, limited by the extent to which internal water and carbonate can react.
Beschreibung: Plain Language Summary: Carbonate minerals contain multiple, independent, chemical and isotopic parameters which can be used to calculate the temperature at which the mineral formed. If these proxies agree with one another, it has been confidently assumed that the temperature is indeed genuine. Here, we investigate three such parameters and show how they record kinetic processes during mineral formation, as well as thermally‐driven processes which may alter a climate record. We find that this method could potentially be used to study the kinetic factors at play during biomineralization, even if the “true” temperature is unknown. We also find that some thermal processes result in all three parameters agreeing with one another. Because thermal alteration poses a potential dilemma for climate researchers, we investigate two common laboratory preparation techniques that involve heating a sample before analysis: drilling and heating sample for fluid inclusion analysis. We find that the heat of a drill is sufficient to facilitate these reactions, and potentially imparts a warm bias onto paleotemperatures, however the apparatus used for analyzing fluid inclusions does not appear to significantly alter the material. We conclude our approach using fluid inclusion analysis and dual‐clumped isotopes has the potential to resolve many ambiguities in interpreting climate records.
Beschreibung: Key Points: We explore the behavior of dual‐clumped and fluid‐inclusion isotope paleothermometers during thermal alteration. Different conditions during diagenesis may result in discrepant paleotemperature estimates, which may be used to identify altered records. Hand‐drilling belemnites produces sufficient heat to reset paleotemperatures, but the heat during analysis of fluid inclusions does not.

Beschreibung: RED SEED stands for Risk Evaluation, Detection and Simulation during Effusive Eruption Disasters, and combines stakeholders from the remote sensing, modelling and response communities with experience in tracking volcanic effusive events. The group first met during a three day-long workshop held in Clermont Ferrand (France) between 28 and 30 May 2013. During each day, presentations were given reviewing the state of the art in terms of (a) volcano hot spot detection and parameterization, (b) operational satellite-based hot spot detection systems, (c) lava flow modelling and (d) response protocols during effusive crises. At the end of each pre- sentation set, the four groups retreated to discuss and report on requirements for a truly integrated and operational response that satisfactorily combines remote sensors, modellers and responders during an effusive crisis. The results of collating the final reports, and follow-up discussions that have been on-going since the workshop, are given here. We can reduce our discussions to four main findings. (1) Hot spot detection tools are operational and capable of providing effusive erup- tion onset notice within 15 min. (2) Spectral radiance metrics can also be provided with high degrees of confidence. However, if we are to achieve a truly global system, more local receiving stations need to be installed with hot spot detection and data processing modules running on-site and in real time. (3) Models are operational, but need real-time input of reliable time-averaged discharge rate data and regular updates of digital elevation models if they are to be effective; the latter can be provided by the radar/photogrammetry community. (4) Information needs to be provided in an agreed and standard format following an ensemble approach and using models that have been validated and recognized as trustworthy by the responding authorities. All of this requires a sophisticated and centralized data collection, distribution and reporting hub that is based on a philosophy of joint ownership and mutual trust. While the next chapter carries out an exercise to explore the viability of the last point, the detailed recommendations behind these findings are detailed here.

Beschreibung: Lophelia pertusa plays an important role as a major contributor to many cold-water coral reefs, supporting a high diversity of associated benthic and benthopelagic species. Due to the high sensitivity of L. pertusa to human activity, it has been classified as indicator species for Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems. However, the global spatial distribution of L. pertusa is far from well known. In this study, a database of L. pertusa presence data was compiled derived from the large number of L. pertusa occurrence records appearing in recent years. In conjunction with data layers covering a range of environmental drivers, habitat suitability for L. pertusa was predicted using the Random Forest approach. Suitable habitat for L. pertusa was predicted to occur primarily on continental margins, with the most suitable habitat likely to occur in the North East Atlantic and South Eastern United States of America. Aragonite saturation state, temperature and salinity were identified as the most important contributors to the habitat suitability model. Given the high vulnerability of reef-forming cold-water corals to anthropogenic impacts, habitat suitability models are critical in developing worldwide conservation and management strategies for biodiverse and biomass rich cold-water coral ecosystems.

Beschreibung: We used environmental niche modelling along with the best available species occurrence data and environmental parameters to model habitat suitability for key cold-water coral and commercially important deep-sea fish species under present-day (1951-2000) environmental conditions and to forecast changes under severe, high emissions future (2081-2100) climate projections (RCP8.5 scenario) for the North Atlantic Ocean (from 18°N to 76°N and 36°E to 98°W). The VME indicator taxa included Lophelia pertusa , Madrepora oculata, Desmophyllum dianthus, Acanela arbuscula, Acanthogorgia armata, and Paragorgia arborea. The six deep-sea fish species selected were: Coryphaenoides rupestris, Gadus morhua, blackbelly Helicolenus dactylopterus, Hippoglossoides platessoides, Reinhardtius hippoglossoides, and Sebastes mentella. We used an ensemble modelling approach employing three widely-used modelling methods: the Maxent maximum entropy model, Generalized Additive Models, and Random Forest. This dataset contains: 1) Predicted habitat suitability index under present-day (1951-2000) and future (2081-2100; RCP8.5) environmental conditions for twelve deep-sea species in the North Atlantic Ocean, using an ensemble modelling approach.  2) Climate-induced changes in the suitable habitat of twelve deep-sea species in the North Atlantic Ocean, as determined by binary maps built with an ensemble modelling approach and the 10-percentile training presence logistic (10th percentile) threshold. 3) Forecasted present-day suitable habitat loss (value=-1), gain (value=1), and acting as climate refugia (value=2) areas under future (2081-2100; RCP8.5) environmental conditions for twelve deep-sea species in the North Atlantic Ocean. Areas were identified from binary maps built with an ensemble modelling approach and two thresholds: 10-percentile training presence logistic threshold (10th percentile) and maximum sensitivity and specificity (MSS). Refugia areas are those areas predicted as suitable both under present-day and future conditions. All predictions were projected with the Albers equal-area conical projection centred in the middle of the study area. The grid cell resolution is of 3x3 km.

Notizen: We present a theoretical treatment of surface–field THz generation in semiconductors, which explains the power enhancement observed when a magnetic field is applied. Our model consists of two parts: a Monte Carlo simulation of the dynamics of carriers generated by a subpicosecond optical pulse, and a calculation of the resulting THz radiation emitted through the semiconductor surface. The magnetic field deflects the motion of the carriers, producing a component of the THz dipole parallel to the surface. This causes the power transmitted through the surface to be increased by more than one order of magnitude. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The magnitude and the direction of the oscillatory exchange coupling in multilayer structures depend sensitively on the atomic scale ordering of the layers. Disorder in the form of substrate roughness, interlayer thickness fluctuations, or interfacial interdiffusion can result in reduced bilinear exchange coupling, the disappearance of short period coupling oscillations, and the increase or decrease of the relative strength of the biquadratic coupling. We have investigated the effect of roughness by growing nearly perfect multilayer Fe/Cr and Fe/Au structures on single crystal Fe whisker substrates. The disorder in these structures was measured using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED), while the coupling directions and magnitudes were measured using scanning electron microscopy with polarization analysis and magneto-optic Kerr microscopy. For the nearly perfect trilayer structures, the periodicity and the magnitude of the oscillatory coupling are in agreement with theoretical predictions based on spacer layer Fermi surface properties. For rougher multilayer systems the exchange coupling can be modeled using structural information from STM and RHEED measurements.

Notizen: NonMarkovian closure theories, with and without non-Gaussian restarts, are compared with ensemble averaged direct numerical simulations (DNS) for severely truncated two-dimensional Navier–Stokes flows. Both the closures and DNS are formulated for discrete spectra relevant to flows on the doubly periodic domain allowing unambiguous comparisons between the closure and DNS results. We examine the performance of the direct interaction approximation (DIA), self-consistent field theory (SCFT) and local energy-transfer theory (LET) closures and are particularly interested in the reliability of cumulant update versions of these closures (CUDIA, CUSCFT, and CULET). In the latter, the potentially long time-history integrals are periodically truncated and the closures are restarted using a three-point cumulant as the new non-Gaussian initial conditions, thus yielding computationally much more efficient closures. In 80-day integrations, the DIA replicates the DNS results most faithfully in inviscid, viscous decay and forced dissipative experiments. With an update time of T=10 days, the CUDIA is particularly promising performing nearly as well but with some extra oscillations at intermediate times. The SCFT and particularly LET, have spurious oscillations in inviscid and viscous decay experiments; this is also the case, but to a greater degree, for the CUSCFT and CULET closures.

Notizen: The fermionic and supersymmetric octonionic bimodular representations are constructed. It is shown that an octonionic formulation of the fermion leads to an intrinsically ten-dimensional world with two independent representations. Consistency conditions for an octonionic supersymmetric algebra are also discussed.
