    Notizen: Abstract Of interest here are dynamic thermoelastic problems influenced by second sound effects. In this regard, the effect of the so called ‘heat waves’ on solid continua is investigated employing a ‘unified’ explicit computational architecture which uses the finite element method. The approach is robust and effective for transient interdisciplinary thermal-structural modeling/analysis. The non-classical relaxation model of Green and Lindsay (1972) involving two relaxation times is employed in the present work. Numerical simulations relevant to thermal shock problems in an elastic half-space are described for stainless steel via two different illustrative test cases.

    Notizen: New developments of describing the theoretical basis towards an effective virtual-pulse (VIP) time integral methodology are proposed for general non-linear transient heat transfer problems. Primarily to validate the proposed methodology of computation, simple numerical test cases are provided and comparisons are also drawn with the implicit second-order-accurate Crank-Nicolson method. For the models tested, the proposed method has comparable or improved accuracy and stability characteristics. The VIP methodology introduced here for tackling non-linear thermal problems offers attractive features and is a viable alternative to traditional time-stepping practices. Efforts are underway to demonstrate the practical applicability to multi-dimensional thermal analysis.

    Notizen: The present paper describes the evaluation of nonlinear thermally induced residual stresses in the cooling of polymer melt during injection molding of plastic components. The computational methodology adopted is based on the transfinite element approach, which is a hybrid scheme as it combines transform methods and classical Galerkin schemes with finite element formulations to preserve the modeling versatility. The applicability of the proposed formulations for understanding the physics and the nature of the nonlinear thermally induced stresses in the solidifying process of a sample amorphous polystyrene specimen demonstrates the basic capabilities and potential of the methodology. Results obtained agree qualitatively well with earlier research studies and experimental findings relevant to thermally induced residual stresses in the injection molding of plastic components.

    Notizen: The paper describes two different computational approaches for simulating the effects due to temperature variations and therein the associated thermally induced stresses and warpage with emphasis on computer aided engineering applications to ‘plastic’ components. One approach is the conventional finite element approach, and the other is termed as the transfinite element approach. The development of unified thermal/stress formulations for each of the aforementioned approaches is described for applications to injection molded plastic parts. Results of both computational formulations are in excellent agreement for predicting the thermal response and unified thermal/stress response and agree qualitatively with previous studies. For this study, it is found that the transfinite element formulations are computationally more efficient although the conventional formulations can still be effectively used. Both formulations are capable of serving as powerful computational tools to help part designers to predict the thermal/stress responses accurately and effectively. The unified concepts and approaches offer potential for extension to more complex geometries and for combined heat transfer and stress problems.

    Notizen: An overview of new and recent advances towards a VIrtual-Pulse (VIP) time-integral methodology for general linear/non-linear dynamic systems is presented. Attention is focused on providing a brief overview and an indepth evaluation of the developments, methodology, computational issues and implementation aspects for practical problems. Different from the way we have been looking at the developments encompassing existing direct time-integration type methods and mode superposition techniques, the proposed methodology capitalizes on the computational attributes of both and thereby offers new perspectives and several attractive favourable features in terms of stability and accuracy, storage, and computational costs for a wide variety of inertial dynamic problems. Recently, the authors have shown the theoretical developments via the VIP methodology for transient structural problems and for transient thermal problems. The purpose of the present paper is to summarize the theoretical developments, improve upon the computational/implementation aspects for general linear/non-linear dynamic structural problems, and demonstrate the pros and cons via numerous illustrative test cases. The theoretical analysis and results of several test cases show that the VIP methodology has improved accuracy/stability characteristics and computational advantages in comparison to the commonly advocated explicit and implicit methods such as the Newmark family. Overall, an analysis of the theoretical developments, algorithmic study, and the implementation and evaluation of the formulations strongly suggest the proposition that the VIP methodology is a viable alternative for general structural dynamic applications encountered in practical engineering problems.

    Notizen: New explicit dynamic computational developments in conjunction with finite element formulations for impact problems are described in this paper. The proposed methodology is based on employing a variational inequality for dynamic problems involving Coulomb friction with the so-called forward incremental displacement-central difference method specially formulated in this paper for this class of problems. To enforce the constraints on the contact boundary, a linear complementary equation is established by means of a minimization problem subjected to constraints, which is equivalent to discretization of the variational inequality of the dynamic problem. In conjunction with these developments, a new conjugate gradient based explicit solution strategy is described for effectively solving the linear complementary equations. With the motivation for providing effective computational procedures suitable for vectorization and parallel computations, the proposed developments not only provide a fundamentally sound and robust theoretical basis but also serve to be ideally suited for impact problems involving frictional contact on high speed computing environments.

The proposed formulations use transform methods in conjunction with finite element developments for each of the heat transfer and structural disciplines, respectively, providing avenues for obtaining the structural response due to thermal effects. An alternative methodology for unified thermal/structural analysis is presented. The potential of the approach is outlined in comparison with conventional schemes and existing practices. Highlights and characteristic features of the approach are described via general formulations and applications to several problems. Results obtained demonstrate excellent agreement in comparison with analytic and/or conventional finite element schemes accurately and efficiently.

    Beschreibung: The paper presents a generalized Transform Method based Finite Element methodology for thermal analysis with emphasis on the computational aspects of heat transfer in structures. The purpose of this paper is to present an alternate methodology for thermal analysis of structures and therein outline the advantages of the approach in comparison with conventional finite element schemes and existing practices. The overall goals of the research, however, are aimed first toward enhanced thermal formulations and therein to provide avenues for subsequent interdisciplinary thermal/structural analysis via a common numerical methodology. Basic concepts of the approach for thermal analysis is described with emphasis on a Laplace Transform based finite element methodology. Highlights and characteristic features of the approach are described via generalized formulations and applications to several problems. Results obtained demonstrate excellent agreement in comparison with analytic and/or conventional finite element solutions with savings in computational times and model sizes. Potential of the approach for interdisciplinary thermal/structural problems are also identified.

    Beschreibung: The applicability and evaluation of a generalized gamma(T) family of flux-based representations are examined for two different thermal analysis formulations for structures and materials which exhibit no phase change effects. The so-called H-theta and theta forms are demonstrated for numerous test models and linear and higher-order elements. The results show that the theta form with flux-based representations is generally superior to traditional approaches.
