Notes: Starting from a general definition of the resolution function one gets a rigorous method of calculating the shape of this function. The tensors of the probability moments of the parameters controlled in the measuring device are used in the computation. The application to neutron spectrometry is discussed.

Notes: The normal approximation to the resolution function defined in the scattering-vector space is calculated for a time-of-flight (TOF) diffractometer. The application to powder and single-crystal diffractometry is discussed. The conditions of time focusing are derived in a simple way. The quasielastic scattering case is also considered.

Notes: The solution of the general form of the integral transport equation is expanded in terms of orders of scattering. The method is applied to the analysis of multiply Bragg-reflected neutrons in mosaic crystals, making evident the vertical broadening of the reflected beam as well as the consequential neutron leakage in crystal spectrometers. A wavelength-dependent effective vertical mosaic spread of the crystal is defined as a function of the mean number of reflections. A detailed mathematical treatment is performed within the frames of an infinite-plane slab model (both in reflection and in transmission geometry) largely used in the literature in the studies of crystal reflectivity. Experimental results are also presented.

Notes: The optics of neutron powder diffractometers with bent-crystal monochromators is considered with respect to the computation of instrumental line shapes, accounting for second-order aberrations. A procedure of Monte Carlo simulation of instrumental line shapes has been developed. An analytical approximation of these shapes is described. Computational results for the case of the MURR diffractometer with position-sensitive detection and a focusing silicon monochromator are presented.

Notes: Neutron imaging with bent crystals is considered in the linear approximation of neutron optics. A matrix formalism analogous to that of conventional lens optics is developed. Various imaging conditions are discussed in relation to the crystal deformation type and to possible applications in neutron scattering. All focusing conditions known previously are included as particular cases. Arrangements combining high resolution in imaging with high resolution in scattering are examined. The concept of Bragg mirrors as devices for non-dispersive imaging is introduced. The most powerful application appears to be that of Bragg mirrors combined with the time-of-flight method. Imaging with a thick packet of silicon wafers at the spatial resolution of a single thin wafer is demonstrated.

Notes: The optics of curved-crystal three-axis neutron spectrometers is investigated analytically. A program for computing resolution and intensity characteristics, which includes finding conditions for intensity–resolution optimization, is presented. Ways of improving spectrometer performances are discussed. The program's predictions are supported by experimental results obtained on a spectrometer with pneumatically curved perfect Si crystals.

Notes: The linear relations of the neutron and X-ray optics in crystal powder diffractometers are extended with second-order terms. An expression for the angular deviation from the Bragg-peak position is derived which reduces to that of Wilson [Mathematical Theory of X-ray Powder Diffractometers (1963). Amsterdam: Philips Technical Library] for the case of characteristic X-rays in parafocusing geometry. A technique of computing second-order aberration effects is described. Line-shift formulae are given for conventional and curved-crystal diffractometers.

Notes: The use of bent perfect crystals in focusing three-axis neutron spectrometry with position-sensitive detection (PSD) is analyzed on the basis of a phase-space theory. With PSD, the usual sequential scans are replaced by simultaneous scans. The case of high resolution in energy transfer is considered in detail. With commercial thin silicon wafers, the achievable resolutions are in the 10–150 µeV range, depending on neutron energy. Resolutions around 10 µeV are obtained on the peak of cold-source spectra. To take advantage of the possibilities offered by silicon wafers, PSD with spatial resolution well below 1 mm will be needed. With PSD analysis, a new kind of focusing exists that allows the thickness of bent perfect analyzer crystals to be increased, providing an intensity gain at no resolution loss. With multilamella assemblies a gain in count rate by the number of lamellae in the packet is achievable. Results of a demonstration experiment are presented, confirming that under the right conditions, a multilamella analyzer may resemble a single bent wafer, the individual curves of many wafers having been combined to provide the intensity gain.

Notes: The optics of successive Bragg reflection by two bent crystals is considered in the lamellar approximation. The optimal curvatures ensuring minimal rocking-curve widths and good reflection efficiencies are determined. The conditions under which a rocking curve reproduces the reflectivity curve of a bent crystal are indicated. Analytical formulae for the rocking-curve width and peak intensity are derived for three simple limiting cases. The computations are supported by experimental results obtained with bent perfect silicon crystals.
