    Description: A representative of the genus Hemiasterella Carter, 1879 was found for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea during sampling in the shallow waters of the northern Aegean Sea. The new species, H. aristoteliana, is compared with Atlantic Hemiasterella elongata Topsent, 1928. The status of the family Hemiasterellidae is discussed.

    Description: Various records of A. simplex Carter, 1879 from the Atlantic are assigned to three new species of the sponge genus Asteropus Sollas, 1888, viz.: A. brasiliensis sp. n., A. vasiformis sp. n., and A. niger sp. n., whereas A. simplex s.s. is restricted to the Indo- Pacific. A worldwide study of Asteropus specimens resulted in the conclusion that two species groups exist, namely \xe2\x80\x9csimplex\xe2\x80\x9d- like species (with true sanidasters), and \xe2\x80\x9csarasinorum\xe2\x80\x9d-like species (with spiny microrhabds), as previously observed by Bergquist (1965, 1968). A newly discovered microsclere complement of trichodragmata in the first group strengthens the need for generic distinction of both lineages, and accordingly the name Melophlus Thiele, 1899 is reinstated for the \xe2\x80\x9csarasinorum\xe2\x80\x9d species group. A key to the West Atlantic species of Asteropus is provided. The family allocation of Asteropus and associated genera in the Coppatiidae Topsent, 1898 is discussed, with the conclusion that the family is undoubtedly a polyphyletic assemblage related to various astrophorid groups (Hooper, 1986; Van Soest, 1991).

    Description: Based on collections assembled by Dutch expeditions to the Northwest African region, including the offshore islands in the neighbouring Atlantic, a taxonomic monograph of sponges of the genus Mycale is presented. Additional material from the region borrowed from the Zoologisk Museum of the University of Copenhagen and incidental samples made by individual collectors were also included. The combined collections contained sixteen species, nine of which are new to science: Mycale (Aegogropila) syringosimilis spec. nov., Mycale (Aegogropila) tenerifensis spec. nov., Mycale (Arenochalina) africamucosa spec. nov., Mycale (Carmia) atropha spec. nov., Mycale (Carmia) guineensis spec. nov., Mycale (Naviculina) cruzi spec. nov., Mycale (Paresperella) janvermeuleni spec. nov., Mycale (Rhaphidotheca) verdensis spec. nov. and Mycale (Zygomycale) sierraleonensis spec. nov. We briefly reviewed six Mycale species known from the region, but not represented in our material, making the faunal diversity twenty-two species. We present a key to all species of Northwest Africa and the neighbouring offshore Atlantic islands. The regional diversity of Mycale species is discussed in comparison to those of other regions.

    Description: The present paper deals with the West Indian marine Haplosclerida incorporated in the collections of the Zoological Museum of Amsterdam. A total of 36 species is described and fully illustrated. Part of the material consists of the Duchassaing & Michelotti collection housed in Amsterdam; of all the Haplosclerid types of this collection an extensive redescription and a photographic illustration is given. Most of the type specimens are designated (para-)lectotypes. Eight new species are erected, viz. Reniera cura\xc3\xa7aoensis, R. carmabi, Sigmadocia piscaderaensis, Niphates alba, Xestospongia wiedenmayeri, X. portoricensis, Petrosia weinbergi, and Strongylophora hartmani. The follwing new combinations are used: Niphates amorpha (for N. digitalis forma amorpha Wiedenmayer, 1977), Cribrochalina spiculosa (for Siphonochalina spiculosa Dendy, 1887), Pellina nodosa (for Phloeodictyon nodosum George & Wilson, 1919), and Pachypellina podatypa (for Haliclona podatypa De Laubenfels, 1934). Several new combinations are suggested for species not represented in the present collection, but studied for comparative reasons.\nA new classification of marine Haplosclerid families is proposed, based on the study of the present collection, and on the study of many type species of Haplosclerid genera. The new classification comprises five families, viz. Haliclonidae, Niphatidae (n.), Callyspongiidae, Petrosiidae (n.) and Oceanapiidae (n.). The proposed classification is discussed and some phylogenetic ideas are presented. The zoogeography of the West Indian sponges is studied and some ecological data are given.

    Description: A sponge collection dredged by Dr. P. WAGENAAR HUMMELINCK in the vicinity of Barbados (West Indies) contained a Cinachyralike specimen bearing large and conspicuous acanthoxea. This find induced the present author to re-examine all specimens with similar spiculation reported so far. A review of the literature revealed that a total of three such specimens has been described in two different genera, all as separate species, viz. Acanthotetilla hemisphaerica Burton, 1959, Acanthocinachyra enigmatica Levi, 1964, and Acanthocinachyra seychellensis Thomas, 1973. Both genera are reported to differ in the presence (genus Acanthocinachyra) or absence (genus Acanthotetilla) of sigmaspire microscleres. In view of the close similarity of the two genera it seemed wise to compare all the specimens.\nMiss S. M. STONE (British Museum (Natural History), London) kindly consented to the loan of the holotype of Acanthotetilla hemisphaerica; Dr. P. L. G. BENOIT (KOninklijk Museum voor Midden Afrika, Tervuren, Belgium) and Dr. C. L\xc3\x89VI (Mus\xc3\xa9um National d\xe2\x80\x99Histoire Naturelle, Paris) readily sent the specimens of Acanthocinachyra seychellensis and A. enigmatica, respectively. Dr. P. WAGENAAR HUMMELINCK (Zo\xc3\xb6logisch Laboratorium, State University of Utrecht) is kindly thanked for his donation of the West Indian collection.     Description: A large number of samples of Salpidae, Doliolidae and Pyrosomatidae, collected by the U. S. Ocean Acre Project, are studied. A new record for the Bermuda area of Doliopsis rubescens (Vogt, 1817) is given. Dominant species are Iasis zonaria (Pallas, 1766), Salpa fusiformis Cuvier, 1804, and Salpa aspera Chamisso, 1819. Seasonal peak occurrences are observed for several species. The seasonal and vertical variation of the number of muscle fibres of aggregate Salpa fusiformis and aggregate Salpa aspera is studied and discussed.

    Description: Four remarkable dome-shaped, apparently juvenile colonies, belonging to the genus Pyrostremma Garstang, 1929, are described from the Bermuda area. Comparison with juvenile colonies of P.agassizi (Ritter & Byxbee, 1905), and with larger colonies, fragments and loose zooids of P.agassizi and P.spinosum (Herdman, 1888), has rendered it likely, that these juvenile colonies belong to P.spinosum. The species of Pyrostremma are discussed.

    Description: Three species of the sponge genus Xestospongia (Haplosclerida) are newly recorded for the south Caribbean island of Cura\xc3\xa7ao, Xestospongia arenosa n. sp., X. caminata Pulitzer-Finali (1986) and X. deweerdtae Lehnert & Van Soest (1999). The species are described and compared with Xestospongia species already known from Cura\xc3\xa7ao and other Caribbean localities. A key to the Cura\xc3\xa7ao species of Xestospongia is provided.

    Description: An annotated comprehensive list is provided of all shallow-water sponges (down to 60 m) recently collected and previously recorded from Jamaica. Five new species are described, Plakina jamaicensis, Melophlus ruber, Agelas repens, Stylissa caribica and Hyrtios tubulatus, two of which belong to genera not recorded before from the Western Atlantic (viz. Melophlus and Stylissa). The number of species recorded from shallow waters (reefs, mangroves and lagoons) now amounts to 157 species, several of which, however, are still of uncertain status.
