Description: This open access book provides integrated treatment technology of rural domestic sewage, and highlights ten typical cases in China. The integrated sewage treatment system (ISTE) combine sewage pretreatment, biological treatment, sedimentation, and disinfection, which particularly suitable for decentralized domestic wastewater treatment in rural areas without pipe networks. The main advantages of ISTE include the compact structure, small footprint, short construction period, high treatment efficiency, and economical rationality. First applied in Japan, ISTE has recently achieved rapid growth in China in the last decade. The relevant technological R&D, practice, and promotion experience accumulated by Chinese enterprises can offer significant reference to other developing countries and regions. The book consists of five chapters. The first chapter introduces characteristics, environmental risks and management styles of rural domestic sewage. The second chapter illustrates the collection and treatment approaches for rural domestic sewage. The third chapter presents the integrated sewage treatment process of high efficiency. The fourth chapter involves the design concept, manufacturing requirements, automatic control, and the cloud management system for ISTE. Chapter five covers ten typical application cases of ISTE in multiple regions of China. This book is suitable for graduate students, engineers, university teachers and government administrators engaged in decentralized sewage treatment.

Notes: In the study of protein folding, our understanding of the protein structures is limited. In this paper we find one way to characterize the compact structures of lattice protein model. A quantity called "Partnum" is given to each compact structure. The Partnum is compared with the "Designability" of protein structures. It is shown that the highly designable structures have, on average, an atypical number of local degree of freedom. The statistical property of Partnum and its dependence on sequence length is also studied. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Based on the group velocity concept and the two-band model, we investigated tunneling properties of spin-polarized electrons traversing ferromagnetic/insulator (semiconductor) double junctions under the influence of an external electric field. The tunneling time and the transmission coefficient, as well as the spin polarization, were calculated and examined. Effects of the electric field and quantum size are also considered. The results indicate that the tunneling time strongly depends on the spin orientation of tunneling electrons. In a wide range of incident energy, spin-down electrons spend a longer time tunneling through the structure than spin-up ones, and the difference of the tunneling time Δτ between electrons with opposite spin orientation is very sensitive to the incident energy in the lower energy region. Moreover, the variation of Δτ with the increasing of the incident energy shows pronounced oscillations for certain applied bias and structural size. The results also indicate that spin polarization shows frequent wide-range oscillations and its magnitude decays slowly with the increasing of the incident energy, which reveal that the spin polarization in ferromagnetic/insulator (semiconductor) junctions possesses quite different properties from those exhibited in semiconductor electric-barrier or magnetic-barrier structures as well as semiconductor/semimagnetic semiconductor hybrid heterostructures. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The difference between the equilibrium and switching d/p ratio of a bistable twisted nematic (BTN) liquid crystal display is shown by computer simulation. It is clearly indicated that the optimized d/p ratio has to be determined by the switching rather than equilibrium d/p ratio. It is also shown that the switching d/p ratio is related not only to the pre-tilt angle, but also to liquid crystal viscosities, which indirectly indicates how temperature will affect the BTN device, and that there exists an optimized delay time for the device-driving waveform which will narrow the selection pulse and increase the matrix driving scanning speed. Further, the trade-off between the width of the waveform selection pulse and cell thickness tolerance is considered. By applying the determined optimized conditions and using the multidimensional alignment method, a long-term bistable BTN effect can be demonstrated. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The power required to heat a lanthanum hexiboride cathode for use in scanning electron microscopes (SEM) has been calculated and found to be in close agreement with experimental measurements. The analysis indicates that direct heating of the LaB6 by the heater current, and efficient heat transfer to the cathode from the heated supports, results in low power consumption. The operating temperature of the cathode support material must be carefully designed to avoid poisoning of the LaB6 by excessive metal evaporation and deposition on the cathode. The LaB6 cathode developed here is well suited to the small heater power supply of the SEM and improves the picture quality over the traditional tungsten filament cathodes.

Notes: The site stripping for clock detection procedure was implemented in the recently developed maximum likelihood framework for estimating evolutionary rates and divergence times in measurably evolving populations. The method was used to investigate the effect of rate variability on estimating divergence times in non-clock-like trees for human immunodeficiency viruses and hepatitis C viruses. We validate our approach by comparing dated coalescent nodes in molecular phylogenies with known dates of transmission. Our method was able to rapidly recover clock-like behavior and to indicate the presence and direction of a bias when estimates of divergence times using the unstripped data were flawed.
