Description:
Chemical bonds and their manifestations in the magnetism of ground-state multiferroic BiFeO 3 are studied theoretically. The magnetic properties of BiFeO 3 in the antiferromagnetic state and their dependences on hydrostatic pressure are studied experimentally and theoretically. These results indicate a substantial rise in the magnetic susceptibility χ of the compound under pressure with a characteristic pressure derivative d lnχ/ dP ∼ 3 × 10 −2 GPa −1 . A quantitative estimate of the magnetostriction is made on the basis of this value for the derivative and it is shown that a magnetostriction mechanism predominates in the interactions of the magnetic and electric subsystems of multiferroic BiFeO 3 .
