Article Femtosecond laser pulses can induce ultrafast changes to the magnetization in magnetic materials. Here, the authors show that the ultrafast demagnetization in ferrimagnets is driven by the transfer of angular momenta between two coupled sublattices whilst the total angular momentum remains constant.
