Notes:
A circuit for photon count spectroscopy and its interface to a digital signal processor (DSP) are described. The complete circuit is housed in a standard IBM-PC board and, as it contains its own processor and memory, has a background mode of operation that releases the host system for being used in other tasks while the correlator is running. The basic autocorrelation routine executed by the DSP on data collected by the count circuit is also discussed. The use of the DSP lends the system great flexibility allowing for a high degree of customization while keeping performance to a level comparable to that of large dedicated units.
