    Notes: A linear shallow water theory of waves in a canal is considered. The energy dissipated by a porous plate located at a step where both the depth and width of the canal changes abruptly is calculated. It is found that a broadening of the canal, combined with a plate with optimal properties, is an efficient way of dissipating wave energy. It is also possible to have a strong wave damping without any reflection.
