The 1/Z expansion of the total energy E(Z,N) is compared with a recent result giving the total energy of heavy positive atomic ions in the weak ionization limit N/Z near to unity. The leading term in the asymptotic limit of the high order coefficients of the 1/Z expansion for large N is thereby determined precisely. The results are finally compared and contrasted with the treatment by Stillinger of the He-like series with N=2.
