Infrared pump–probe characterization of the excited state lifetimes reveals that CO bound to isolated metal sites (T1=140±20 ps) persists longer than the signal observed for CO bound to (approximate)35 A(ring) diameter metal particles (≤18 ps), suggesting paticipation of electron–hole excitations in the larger metal particles.
