The use of permanent magnet coaxial synchronous couplings in screwing devices allows one to adjust the screwing torque very precisely, but the symmetrical behavior of classical systems always leads to a partial unscrewing. This article shows that the dissymmetry of this behavior can be enhanced only by the modification of the shape of the magnets stuck on the rotors. The consideration of some basic geometrical parameters (number and length of poles) and the application of rules to reach the dissymmetry lead to improved couplings for screwing devices. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
