Major downsizing efforts are now taking place in multinationalbusiness firms in virtually every corner of the world, despite theeconomic recovery that seems to be occurring in many countries. Thosemultinational firms that have been turned around most effectivelythrough downsizing activities have based their decision making on afoundation of creative excellence and strategic leadership. The keys toorganizational excellence in the downsized workplace centres on fourvariables - care of customers, constant innovation, committedpeople, and management leadership. A research study conducted by theauthors has focused on leadership strategies followed by managersdirecting successful downsizing efforts in multinational firms. Thesestrategies are: attention through vision, meaning through communication;trust through positioning; and confidence through respect.
