Notes: Summary A number of commercially bottled mineral waters [34] was examined by fluorimetry. It was found, that this method can be applied to the detection of traces of fluorescent substances in these waters. Some of the waters investigated fluoresce with a blue colour, others are not fluorescent. The intensity of fluorescence, compared to standard aqueous solutions of quinine sulphate containing amounts from 50 ng to 1.5 ng in aqueous solutions of 0.01 N sulphuric acid, is measured by means of a spectrofluorimeter (Zeiss, Oberkochen). The blue fluorescence is produced mainly by carbohydrates and their degradation and condensation products (Kalle). Traces of fluorescent substances in packing materials and in water-pipelines can also cause a fluorescence in otherwise non-fluorescent mineral waters.
