Abstract A description is given of a simple Monte Carlo processor for the simulation of generalized cellular automata systems in statistical physics and certain simpleimage processing tasks. Xilinx SRAM based FPGAs are used to implement the main functional blocks of the processor, with the consequence that it can be reconfigured at the gate level to tackle a wider variety of simulations than a non-FPGA based special purpose architecture. For a wide class of simulations the processor can increase the processing speed of its PC-AT host by more than two orders of magnitude.
