Abstract To assure proper management and fully realize the benefits of the legume-Rhizobium symbiosis it is necessary to be able to quantify the amount of nitrogen fixed. Having measured the effectiveness of atmospheric N2 fixation the macro- or micro-symbionts as well as agronomic factors can be manipulated with the objective to maximize biological nitrogen fixation. A suitable method to quantify nitrogen fixation is therefore necessary in any programme aiming at increasing N2 fixation, like the one being reported in this volume. There are several methods available to quantify nitrogen fixation and most of the commonly used ones are described in the present paper listing their advantages and disadvantages.
