Abstract The formation of magnetite microcrystals in an aqueous solution containing stoichiometric quantities of iron chlorides and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) at 90 °C has been studied by means of Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The crystallite size of the microcrystals was estimated to be 100–200 Å in diameter.
