Abstract The importance of relative growth rates and their variances in larval populations is discussed. In competition between wild type andBar mutant larvae ofDrosophila melanogaster, an influence of density on the rate of selection was demonstrated experimentally. A further experiment using two wild stocks also showed that relative fitnesses vary with the degree of competition, and indicated that this may be connected with differences in variance of growth rates.
