Summary The solution of the plane-strain problem of a circular cylindrical hole in a field of uniaxial tension is obtained in the linear theory of elasticity in which the potential energy function depends on both the strain and the gradient of the strain. The stress-concentration factor at the surface of the cylindrical hole and the stress-concentration away from the hole are found and they are compared with the analogous results obtained in couple-stress theory and in classical elasticity.
