Abstract A numerical model is proposed for the cyclic life of a structurally inhomogeneous powder material. The model is based on the mechanics of structurally inhomogeneous deformable media. The finite-element method has been used to solve the boundary-value problem for deformation and failure in a microscopically inhomogeneous material under a external load. The simulation indicates the effects of structural microscopic inhomogeneities (pores and solid inclusions) on the fatigue characteristics of PK-100N4M powder low-alloy steel, and the fatigue working-life curve is derived.
