Abstract The transmission of very cold neutrons as a method of investigating submicroscopic structures in matter is compared with small-angle neutron scattering, using an Al—Zn alloy as a sample. This pilot experiment shows that the size and density of precipitates can be reliably deduced from the transmission data, but small-angle scattering is capable of providing more detailed information.
