Finite element calculation and the nonlinear temperature-dependence of thermal strain are reviewed using basic principles. An approach for thermal strain calculation based on an instantaneous coefficient of thermal expansion, material description, is presented for incremental finite element analysis. The approach is then related to the current calculation method which uses a reference-dependent mean expansion coefficient. Implications of the alternative approaches are discussed, and the principles are applied to actual expansion data for an epoxy. The paper is written to aid finite element analysts and code developers on thermal strain calculation.
