Natriumoxyd Na2O vereinigt sich mit vielen Salzen einfacher Sauerstoffsäuren Zu Orthosalzen, die mit NaOH oder Na2CO3 nicht dargestellt werden können. So entsteht z. B. beim Erhitzen von Natriumnitrit mit, Natriumoxyd tiefgelbes Natriumorthonitrit Na3NO3, aus Natriumnitrat und Natriumoxyd bildet sich weißes Natriumorthonitrat Na3NO4. Auch die meisten Metalloxyde setzen sich mit Natriumoxyd leicht zu Salzen um; Silberoxyd vereinigt sich z. B. mit Natriumoxyd unter Bildung des hellgrün gefärbten Natriumorthoargentits Na3AgO2.
