Concerning the System Sodium Hydroxide-Water. Crystal Structure of the Metastable Phase β-NaOH · 4 H2OIn the context of new work taken up on formation and structure of higher hydrates of sodium hydroxide, the crystal structure of the metastable form of the tetrahydrate, β-NaOH · 4 H2O, has been determined for the first time. The orthorhombic crystals have space group P212121 with Z = 4 formula units per unit cell and the lattice constants a = 6.237, b = 6.288, c = 13.121 Å at -155°C. With 1 215 independent observed MoK\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \bar \alpha $\end{document} diffractometer data and all H atoms located and refined in ordered positions, a final R value of 0.027 was obtained. Na(H2O)6+ octahedra are face-linked to columns parallel to the a axis. These are connected with each other by hydrogen bonds via the OH- ion and an H2O molecule, which also does not coordinate the cation. This H2O molecule donates hydrogen bonds only to OH- ions, while a configuration with interchanged donor and acceptor functions, OH-…OH2, exceeds the usual distance criteria for a hydrogen bond.
Notes:
