Principles and Possibilities of Single Pulse Attached Proton Test Technique to 13C-N.M.R. Analysis of Structural GroupsThe theoretical background of the amplitude modulation of the signals of noise-decoupled 13C n.m.r. spectra introduced by heteronuclear J couplings is described. The simplest way to achieve this modulation is the single pulse technique. During the period τ (decoupler off) between the observation pulse and the start of acquisition the different components of the carbon magnetization precess at their individual frequencies. The recombination of these components (decoupler on) produces after the period τ modulated peak intensities I for the CHn groups governed by the following equation \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {{\rm I} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{\rm I} {{\rm I}_{\rm 0} = \cos ^{\rm n} \pi {\rm J}\tau }}} \right.\kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {{\rm I}_{\rm 0} = \cos ^{\rm n} \pi {\rm J}\tau }} $$\end{document}The possibilities of the application of the “attached proton test” technique are demonstrated for the assignment of the peaks of 13C n.m.r. spectra of simple hydrocarbons and their mixtures.
