The condensation of indolyl-3-aldehyde with either dimethyl-, or dimethyl methylsuccinate in the presence of potassium t-butoxide gave predominatly the (E)-half esters 1a and 1b, whose configuration is inferred by cyclisation with sodium acetate in acetic anhydride to the corresponding carbazole derivatives 2. Hydrolysis of the above half esters gives the corresponding acids 1c and 1d, which can be converted to the anhydrides 3.
