1. Uric acid was isolated from larvae of Drosophda melanogaster to which glucose-[1-14C] and glu∼ose-[6-14C] had been fed. The specific activity of the atoms 2 and 8 of the purine skeleton was considerably higher after feeding glucose- [6-14C] than after glucose- [1-14C]. The activated formate used in building the purine ring probably derives from the C 3 of glyceric acid (glycerate → hydroxypyruvate → serine).
