The kinetics of exchange of protons in 1- and 3-positions of the azulene molecule with heavy water in the gaseous phase at 140° C has been investigated. In the presence of large excess of heavy water the kinetics follows a simple two stage, first order reaction scheme, for which the rate constants have been measured. The hitherto unknown azulene-d1 isotope has been observed spectroscopically and shown to be involved in the reaction as an intermediate do → d1 → d2, with kinetically approximatively equivalent 1- and 3-positions.
