Large Molecular Cavities, V. - Phenylene Nuclei as Lipophilic Spacer Groups in Macropolycyclic RingsThe intramolecular cavities of the synthetic catapinands and cryptands 1-6 are kept in fixed diameters by rigid o-terphenyl spacer groups. Crystalline complexes of 1b have been isolated using alkali and alkaline earth metal salts. 23Na-NMR investigations show 1b to be an effective neutral ligand for Na⊕ ions. The diamide 1a and the diamine 6b show restricted conformational mobility as established by the temperature dependent 1H- and 13C-NMR spectra. The 1:2 stoichiometry of the adducts obtained with methyl acetate (5b) and water (3b) indicates intermolecular lattice inclusions. Methylation of 1b and 5b with “magic methyl” and methyl p-toluenesulfonate furnishes the bis ammonium compounds 17, 18.

Die intramolekularen Hohlräume der synthetisierten Catapinanden und Cryptanden 1-6 sind durch starre o-Terphenylgruppen in bestimmten Durchmessern festgehalten. Von 1b wurden mit Alkali- und Erdalkalimetallsalzen kristalline Komplexe isoliert. 23Na-NMR-Untersuchungen weisen 1b als wirksamen Neutralliganden für Na⊕-Ionen aus. Das Diamid 1a und das Diamin 6b sind konformativ nicht frei beweglich, wie temperaturabhängige 1H- und 13C-NMR-Spektren zeigen. Die 1:2-Stöchiometrie der mit Essigester (5b) und Wasser (3b) erhaltenen Addukte deutet auf intermolekulare Gitter-Einschlüsse hin. 1b und 5b wurden mit “Magic Methyl” und p-Toluolsulfonsäure-methylester zu den doppelten Ammoniumverbindungen 17, 18 quarterniert.
