Thermal RearrangementMain products of the thermal rearrangement of the title compounds are the three isomeric ethyl(tetramethyl)benzenes 4o, 4m, 4p in the approximate ratio 2:2:1. The isomerization is a radical chain reaction induced by peroxides in which a methyl radical moves from the C-6 position to the exo-methylene group. In the intermediate bicyclo[3.1.0]hexenyl radical, a rotation of the three membered ring around the five membered ring leads to a statistical distribution of five substituents. Tetramethylhomofulvene pyrolyzes exclusively to form pentamethylbenzene while hexamethylfulvene gives only isopropenyl(tetramethyl)cyclo-pentadiene.
    Notes: Als Hauptprodukte der thermischen Umlagerung der Titelsubstanzen bilden sich die drei isomeren Äthyl(tetramethyl)benzole 4o, 4m, 4p im annähernden Verhältnis 2:2:1. Es handelt sich um eine durch Peroxide induzierte Kettenreaktion, bei der ein Methylradikal von C-6 auf die exo-Methylengruppe übertragen wird. In dem intermediären Bicyclo[3.1.0]hexenyl-Radikal 11 führt die Wanderung des Dreirings um den Fünfring zu einer statistischen Verteilung von dessen Substituenten. Tetramethylhomofulven pyrolysiert nur zu Pentamethylbenzol, Hexamethylhomofulven nur zu Isopropenyl(pentamethyl)cyclopentadien.
