A method is described for the determination of fluoroborate anion in water using field desorption mass spectrometry in the negative ion mode. The fluoroborate anion can be determined at concentrations as low as 4 ppb and both the sensitivity and specificity of this method are compared with those of field desorption and fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry in the positive ion mode.
