Notes: A 4 min gas chromatographic run on 3% SP-2250 allows for the simultaneous gas chromatographic selected ion monitoring assay of dopamine, homovanillic acid, dihydroxyphenylacetic acid and 3-methoxytyramine after a one-step derivatization with pentafluoropropionic anhydride and hexafluoroisopropanol. A comparison of electron impact, positive chemical ionization and negative chemical ionization conditions indicated dramatic increases in sensitivity with negative chemical ionization. This assay has wide applications for the measurement of monoamines and their metabolites in biological samples.
