Description / Table of Contents: The present volume of the "Report of the Complex Antarctic Expedition of the Academy of Sciences of the U.S.S.R." contains the account of the work of the marine expedition (the first trip). In this volume the aims and problems of the expedition are given. The special section of the volume is devoted to the coditions in which the research ship "Ob" was sailing from Kaliningrad to the Antarctic, to the search of a place for the setting up of the observatory "Mirny". The brief characteristic of the weather conditions during the sailing and anchorage of the "Ob" in Farr Bay and near Mirny is given in this volume. The main sections of the first volume contain the materials of the scientific research work of the marine expedition. During the period from 30.11.55 to 8.07.56 the "Ob" passed 33325 miles. Passing scientific observations were being done almost continuously. During the period from 29.02.56 (departure from Mirny) to 8.06.56 (arrival to Aden Bay) on the 15700 mile traverse the marine expedition carried out complex explorations on the IGY programme at 156 deep-water oceanographic stations. The volume contains the materials of the scientific research works on aerology, meteorology and actionometry, hydrology and hydrochemistry (physical and chemical characteristics of water mass, currents, colour and transparency of water, wave characteristic, quantity and drift of ice), marine geology (relief of the bottom, ground accumulations, suspension material in the sea water, seismo-acoustic investigations), geophysics (measurements of gravity and electricity in ocean), hydrography (geodesic, astronomoic observations and navigation ensuring of the trip), hydrobiology (plankton, benthos, fishes, marine mammalia and birdes). It is necessary to note, that the conclusions from the scientific research works have the preliminary character, because they are based on the first processing of the materials during the period of the trip.
