Description: Pacific bonito, Sarda chiliensis, have been fished inCalifornia waters since at least the beginning of this century. Commercial landings between 1916 and 1971 varied widely, with a low of 128,000 lbs in 1956 and a high of 21.2 million lbs in 1967 (Table 1). The catch is partly dependent upon availability, but it is strongly influenced by economicfactors. The size and condition of the resource is unknown at present although it appears that the catch could be substantiallyincreased without damage to the resource.
