Description: Abstract: The SW-NE orientated Middle Devonian Eifel-Limestone syncline of Gerolstein is part of the Middle-Upper Devonian limestone synclinorium of the "Eifler Nord-Süd-Zone" (Western Rhenish Massif). The syncline of Gerolstein belongs to the center of the NW-SE aligned Cenozoic Westeifel volcanic field causing the occurence of high percentages of C02 (up to 3000 mg/1) in the groundwater. The mineral water of Gerolstein, indusWally used (Gerolsteiner Sprudel, one of the biggest mineral water producers of Germany) is a "Calcium- Magnesium-Bicarbonate-acidulous spring" (= 2500 mg/1) which is originated in the Middle Devonian dolomitic limestones (Givetium, core of the syncline). The infiltration of atmospheric waters and the constant upstream of C02 of mantle origin cause and control four concentration levels of the groundwater in the dolomitic limestone aquifer. By detailed geological and geochemical investigations it was possible to evolve a first groundwater model for this important mineral water resource.
