In:  Bijdragen tot de dierkunde vol. 20 no. 2, pp. 1-93
    Publication Date: 2024-01-12

Description: Durch die G\xc3\xbcte des Herrn Dr. Jos. 1. Description: Pallenopsis is one of the earliest-known Pycnogonids, yet it also may boast of being well-nigh the most misunderstood. Its name and exhaustive characteristics were published not until 1880 by Wilson, but as early as 1804 Latreille gave an account of an animal by the name of Phoxichilus phalangio\xc3\xafdes, which lately proved to be a true Pallenopsis. For this original description I beg to refer to my newly published article.1) Wilson has given the following diagnosis of his new genus: \xe2\x80\x9eBody slender as in Phoxichilidium, segmented. Rostrum cylindrical.\nAbdomen slender, simple. Antennae with four joints, large and chelate.\nPalpi rudimentary, composed of a single joint. Accessory leg present in both sexes, ten-jointed. Legs slender, dactylus with auxiliary claws. Two very unequal pairs of large ocelli." He further mentions the peculiar glandular duct near the middle of the fourth joint of the legs in the male which he supposes to be perhaps of generic significance.\nThe number of known species amounts to more than thirty, which I have enumerated in the following table. They have been arranged after the depths they were caught in. Moreover I have given in the list some characteristics of the animals, clearly showing the most important special differences.\nDepth. Most species belong to the genuine deepsea-forms, however not a few are found in shallow water; of some others, the depth they live in, is unknown. Moreover the same species sometimes was met with both in the abyss and in much smaller depths. In general the probabilities

IX, pp. 192\xe2\x80\x94284).

Sthenelais simplex Ehl. 2) f. i. has rightly been ranged by Augener among the genus Leanira 3); Leanira Giardi Darb.4) according to the investigations of Marenzeller belongs to Sthenelais 5) and Thalenessa stylolepis Willey 6) will prove, as I presume, to be a species of Sigalion. Partly this may be ascribed to the circumstance, that only a few of the investigators could dispose of a large material and therefore must borrow their knowledge from the often inadequate descriptions of others; but it may also have been caused thereby, that there was no agreement about the characters, that offer a thrustworthy criterion for the distinction of the genera. However von Marenzeller in his critical account of the genus Leanira 7) has given us a clear review of the various often inexact ideas of the authors regarding this matter and stated that besides the presence or absence of the tentacle (median antenna) and the situation of the lateral antennae (on the prostomium or on the buccal segment), the structure of the ventral bristles furnish \xe2\x80\x9edas ausschlaggebende Moment", to distinguish the different genera 8).\nAs the Siboga-expedition collected representants of this group at no less as 37 stations 9), I could dispose of a rather large material and I had the opportunity to corroborate as well as to extend the investigations of von Marenzeller.

Description: 1. Talorchestia brito Stebbing.\nIn examining a lot of Orchestia gammarellus (Pallas) (= O. littorea (Montagu)) collected many years ago at Katwijk by Dr. J. A. Herklots, late conservator of Invertebrates at the Leiden Museum, I came across some fine specimens of Talorchestia brito Stebbing, which have evidently been picked up together with the common Orchestiae.\nThe sample was undated, but as Dr. Herklots died in 1872, the specimens must have been caught on our sea-shore long before Stebbing described his new species, in October 1891 (Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., ser. 6 v. VIII p. 324\xe2\x80\x94328, pl. XV), obtained plentifully in the summer of this year \xe2\x80\x9eon Woolacombe and Saunton Sands, in North Devon". Afterwards Chevreux found it, likewise in abundance, on the shore of Verdon (Gironde) in August 1893 (Rev. biol. d. Nord d. 1. France, t. VII, 1894\xe2\x80\x9495, p. 158), but no further record seems to have been given since that time.\nThough Stebbing characterized his species with his usual accuracy and gave some figures of the gnathopods, the last joints of the pereiopods and the telson, I have thought it not superfluous to give a full account of the characters of my specimens, which were all males (12 in all). I have not been able to recognize the females of this species, which in my opinion are scarcely, if at all, to be distinguished from Talitrus saltator (Montagu) (= T. locusta (Pallas)), as I shall explain further on.\nWith regard to the distinctive characters of Talorchestia, it has been rightly remarked by Stebbing, that this genus is composed of the genera Orchestia and Talitrus, indeed in such a manner, that the males of Talorchestia should be referred to Orchestia, while the females are

Front triangular, subacute, projecting as much forward as the obtuse, outer orbital angles. Antennular prominence rounded and separated from the branchiostegal spine by a deeper sinus than from the outer orbital angle; antero-lateral angle of the carapace broadly rounded, branchiostegal sinus shallow and making an obtuse angle with the lower margin of the carapace. Carapace rounded dorsally, without ridges or carinae on the lateral sides. Anterior dorsal tooth mutilated.\nFirst and 5th abdominal terga rounded, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th slightly carinate, the 6th segment, which is one and a half as long as the 5th and about one and a half as long as broad, sharply carinate dorsally, the carina terminating in a small acute tooth, which is directed downward. Telson one-fifth shorter than 6th segment, deeply grooved dorsally; the tip triangular, prominent, half as long as broad at the outer angles and armed probably on either side with 4 spines.\nEyes blackish or slate-coloured, little enlarged, eyestalks hardly reaching beyond the middle of basal antennular article. Antennular peduncle reaching a little beyond the middle of the distance between the orbital margin of the carapace and the apex of the scaphocerite; 3rd segment a little longer than 2nd. Finally Roule among the Annelids of the Travailleur and the Talisman found an Aphrodite from a depth of 1084 M., that also possesses ventral setae with a pinnate appearance; with the two preceding species he ranges this form in a new genus Aphroditella. Several species of this genus appear to be represented in the Malayan abyss.\nAphroditella malayana n. sp.\nSiboga-expedition, Stat. 161, east off Kofian-island; depth 798 M.\nThe body is oval, distinctly narrowed in the posterior region like in Aphrodite australis (Challenger Annel. The long goldenbrown dorsal bristles pierce the grey dorsal felt as in Aphrodite aculeata, but the iridescent lateral bristles of this species are absent; the dorsal bristles are directed backwards, but they do not quite reach to the median dorsal line. In the posterior half of the ventral side the intersegmental grooves have a sinuous course, as also appears to occur in Aphroditella obtecta (Florida-Anneliden, Pl. VI, fig. 2). The ventral bristles are shorter than the dorsal ones; their distal part is faintly S-like curved and densely pilose over a short region at some distance from the hook, much resembling the ventral bristles of the Florida-species. M. - Edw. from the Fiji Islands, but may at first sight be distinguished by the shape of the abdomen, of the caudal fan and of the smaller cheliped, probably also by that of the larger, which, unfortunately, is wanting, like the flagella of the outer antennae.\nThis specimen is 85 mm. long from tip of rostrum to end of telson and therefore belongs to the larger species of this genus; the carapace which is 22 mm. long, measures about one-fourth the whole length and one-third the length of the abdomen. Rostrum (Fig. 2) broadly triangular, acuminate, reaching to just beyond the middle of 1st antennular article and to the distal third part of the ophthalmopods, just beyond the eyes; upper surface of rostrum slightly convex transversely and longitudinally, obliquely directed downward in a lateral view, while the acute rostral point is directed horizontally forward. Like in Call. armata (A. Milne Edwards, Nouv. Archives du Mus\xc3\xa9um. M\xc3\xa9m. 1870, T. VI, PI. I, fig. 1), the anterior margin of the carapace is armed, on either side of the rostrum, with a smaller acute spinule, just outside the eye-stalks; these spinules are directed obliquely inward and almost half as long as the rostrum, reaching as far as the distal margin of 1st antennal article.\nThe gastric region (Fig. 1) which is twice as long as broad and strongly convex transversely, is separated anteriorly by a slight depression from

Vol. I. a.

Description: At the Stations 49a and 260 the Siboga-Expedition collected two specimens of Aphroditidae, that, though agreeing in their main characters with Hermione and Laetmonice, in my opinion cannot be ranged in these genera on account of the quite different shape of their dorsal bristles; therefore the new genus Halogenia may be proposed for them.\nHalogenia arenifera n. sp.\nSiboga-expedition, Stat. 49a, Sapeh-strait, depth of 69 M.\nThe body of the unique specimen is ellipsoidal, long 12 mm., broad 7 mm.; the number of its segments is about 30. Its ventral side is rough, densely beset with small tubercles, whereas the dorsum is entirely covered with sand-grains, that are adhering to the elytra. No dorsal felt could be detected. The parapodia are slender, conical, measuring in length two thirds of the breadth of the body. The sides of the body are flanked by long dorsal bristles (fig. 1), that are thin and flexible, pale-brown coloured; they show a fine, longitudinal striation and terminate at their distal end in a large, dark-brown hook, bearing on its convex side a conical point.\nThe bristle is surrounded by a sheath, that (presumably by the influence of the spirit) has a wrinkled appearance and above the hook passes in a rather long filiform appendage, that in its basal part shows a small enlargement. In the anterior segments these bristles are so long, that bent afterwards they almost reach to the end of the body.
