    Description / Table of Contents: The influence of some colloids on the corrosion of brass in acetic acidA detailed discussion of the theories hitherto developed on the effectiveness of organic inhibitors is followed by a report on tests with Ms 70/30 brass in 0.2 n acetic acid. In declining order, the effectiveness of organic colloids was found to be as follows: agar, acacia, dextrin, egg albumen, gelatin, potato starch; the effectiveness is also greatly dependent on the concentration of the inhibitors. Usually, there is, for each individual inhibitor, a characteristic inhibition maximum at a certain concentration. Generally, the inhibiting effect in acetic and citric acid is greater then in malic acid, with the exception of acacia and egg albumen which are about equally effective in all three acids. It is only in a few cases, and in low concentration ranges, that the laws of adsorption apply.
    Notes: Nach einer eingehenden Diskussion der bisher vorliegenden Theorien der Wirksamkeit organischer Inhibitoren wird über Versuche mit Messing Ms 70/30 in 0,2 n-Essigsäure berichtet. Die Wirksamkeit der organischen Kolloide nahm in der Reihenfolge Agar 〉 Acacia 〉 Dextrin 〉 Ei-Albumin 〉 Gelatine 〉 Kartoffelstärke ab und ist auch stark von der Konzentration der Inhibitoren abhängig, Meist gibt es ein für den jeweiligen Inhibitor charakteristisches Maximum der Hemmwirkung bei einer bestimmten Konzentration. Allgemein ist die Hemmwirkung in Essig- und Citronensäure stärker als in Äpfelsäure. Nur Acacia und Ei-Albumin sind in allen drei Säuren etwa gleich wirksam, Die Adsorptionsgesetze sind nur in wenigen Fällen und in kleinen Konzentrationsbereichen erfüllt.

    Description / Table of Contents: Influences of the base metal surface upon protective coatingsThe protective value of coatings produced by different processes depends, among others, on an optimum quality of the base metal surface. It can thus be shown on nickel-plated cast iron specimens, that coarse graphite can cause voids in the metal matrix, and that galvanically deposited nickel can be locally pressed into voids. This is why cast iron with finely distributed graphite should be used for galvanic coating. Similar experience exists with cast iron for enamelling purposes; in this case graphite nets, i.e. local graphite accumulations, contribute to the undesirable sparkling of the enamel. Further results of investigations permit the conclusion that other voids of macroscopic or microscopic order - such as shrinkages which interrupt the continuity of the base metal surface - always have a detrimental effect upon the protective value and the life of the coatings; they must therefore be avoided. Measures suitable for this purpose are indicated.The example fo anodised aluminium alloys shows in which was crystal phase demixing and unsuitable material composition can affect the anodising quality. Appropriate counter-measures are indicated also for this case.The surface treatment requires in each case a metallic base surface free from oxide, slag and salt inclusions. The defects caused by such inclusions are demonstrated with the aid of sample specimens. Careless surface treatments - such as those used in practice for surface cleaning and roughening prior to the coating - may, however, affect the life of a coating even upon a high quality surface. A sprayed metal coating specimen shows that a flame-sprayed coating may flake off if it has been applied over residues from blast cleaning.
    Notes: Der Korrosionsschutzwert von nach verschiedenen Verfahren erzeugten Überzügen ist auch an eine optimale Haftgrundbeschaffenheit gebunden. An Beispielen vernickelten Gußeisens wird gezeigt, wie grober Graphit in der metallischen Gefügegrundmasse Lücken hervorruft, in die galvanisch abgeschiedenes Nickel örtlich eingedrückt werden kann. Für galvanische Metallabscheidungen soll daher Gußeisen mit feiner Graphitabscheidung verwendet werden. Für zu emaillierendes Gußeisen liegen ähnliche Erfahrungen vor, denn hier begünstigen Graphitnester, d. s. lokale Graphitanhäufungen, das unerwünschte Schäumen der Emaille. An weiteren Untersuchungsergebnissen wird gezeigt, daß auch andere Makro- und Mikrohohlräume, die wie z. B. Feinlunker die Kontinuität des Haftgrundwerkstoffes unterbrechen, in jedem Falle schädlich auf den Korrosionsschutzwert und die Haltbarkeit der Überzüge wirken, sie müssen also vermieden werden, wofür Hinweise gegeben werden. An Beispielen elozierter Aluminium-Legierungen wird gezeigt, wie Kristallseigerungen und ungeeignete Werkstoff-Zusammensetzungen die Eloxierung stören können; erfolgreiche Gegenmaßnahmen werden angegeben. Die Oberflächenbehandlung erfordert in jedem Falle auch einen metallischen Haftgrund, der frei von Oxyd-, Schlacken- und Salzeinschlüssen ist. Welche hierdurch auftreten, wird ebenfalls an Beispielen erörtert. Selbst bei einwandfreier Haftgrundbeschaffenheit kann eine nachlässige Vorbehandlung, wie vor Beschichtungen zwecks Reinigung und Aufrauhung oft praxisüblich ist, die Haltbarkeit von Überzügen beeinträchtigen. Am Beispiele einer Metallspritzschicht wird gezeigt, wie überspritzte Strahlmittelreste ein Abblättern der Flammspritzschicht begünstigen.

    Description / Table of Contents: Stress corrosion cracking of austenitic steels in sea waterStable austenitic Mn—Cr and Cr—Ni steels were tested for stress corrosion cracking in cold artificial sea water. The following steel groups were investigated: (%) Steel A ist resistant when annealed at 1050°C and water quenched but shows strong stress corrosion cracking proneness after sensitization between 500 and 800°C. The cracks are intercrystalline. With this steel, stress corrosion cracking is caused not only by sea water but also by tap water and distilled water. The life of the specimens depends on the magnitude of the tensile stress; the higher the stress the shorter is the life. Strees-free specimens show no intercrystalline corrosion.Steel of group B likewise shows, in the sensitized condition, intercrystalline stress corrosion cracking in cold sea water. The range of corrosion proneness is reduced as the carbon content decreases. As with steel A, the life of corrosion-prone specimens is greatly dependent on the tensile stress. Stress-free specimens show intergranular pitting.With steel of group C, intergranular pitting is encountered as a function of carbon content and sensitization. For this type of corrosion, it is still necessary to clarify the influence of tensile stress and the exact ranges of corrosion proneness. With this group of steel, no stress corrosion cracking was observed during tests in cold artificial sea water.
    Notes: Stabil austenitische Mn—Cr- und Cr—Ni-Stähle wurden in kaltem künstlichem Meerwasser auf Spannungsrißkorrosion geprüft. Folgende Stahlgruppen wurden untersucht: (%). Stable A ist im abgeschreckten Zustand beständig, weist aber nach Reizglühung zwischen 500 und 800°C starke Anfälligkeit für Spannungsrißkorrosion auf. Die Risse verlaufen interkristallin. Spannungsrißkorrosion wird bei diesem Stahl nicht nur durch Meerwasser, sondern auch durch Leitungswasser und destilliertes Wasser hervorgerufen. Die Standzeit der Proben ist abhängig von der Höhe der Zugspannung: höhere Spannung gibt kürzere standzeit. Spannungsfreie Proben zeigen keinen interkristallinen Angriff.Stahlgruppe B zeigt ebenfalls im reizgeglühten Zustand starke, interkristallin verlaufende Spannungsrißkorrosion in kaltem Meerwasser. Der Bereich der Anfälligkeit wird mit fallendem Kohlenstoffgehalt kleiner. Die Standzeit anfälliger Zugproben ist wie bei Stahl A stark abhängig von der Höhe der Zugspannung. Spannungsfreie Proben zeigen interkristallinen Lochfraß.Bei Stahlgruppe C tritt in Abhängigkeit von Kohlenstoffgehalt und Reizglühung interkristalliner Lochfraß auf. Der Einfluß der Zugspannung und die genauen Bereiche der Anfälligkeit müssen für diesen Korrosionsangriff noch geklärt werden. Spannungsrißkorrosion konnte bei dieser Stahlgruppe bei Prüfung in kaltem künstlichem Meerwasser nicht beobachtet werden.

    Description / Table of Contents: Investigations on corrosion inhibitors in the gaseous phaseInvestigations concerning the inhibition of corrosion by dichamine and its compounds in the gaseous phase have led to the conclusion that the inhibiting effect of dichamine which, in contrast to the aqueous solution, is excellent, is due to the high vapour pressure and to the formation of a hydrophobe adsorption film on the metal surface. That the inhibiting effect of the dichamine can be reduced, or even converted into stimulation, by the formation of salts with acids is due to the lower volatility of the salts the amine of which can only be released through hydrolytic fission. Volatile acid components, being corrosive agents, are in respect of adsorption in kinetic competition with dichamine; the result of this competition has a decisive influence on corrosion. More or less hydrophile salt layers are created which impede the inhibiting effect of the amine. Nitrous acid represents a spetial case because of its oxidisting properties; it is released from its salts through hydrolytic fission and is so highly volatile that it does not, for the transport to the metal surface, require the bonding with dichamine to dichane. With the combination of dichamine and nitrous acid, there is no synergetic reinforcement of the inhibitor effect since the effect of dichamine is not reached, let alone surpassed, by any of its compounds.
    Notes: Aus Untersuchungen über die Korrosionshemmung durch Dichamin und seine Salze in der Gasphase wird geschlossen, daß die im Gegensatz zur wäßrigen Lösung ausgezeichnete Inhibitorwirkung des Dichamins eine Folge seines hohen Dampfdruckes und der Bildung eines hydrophoben Adosrptionsfilmes an der Metalloberfläche ist. Daß die Inhibitorwirkung des Dichamins durch Salzbildung mit Säuren herabgesetzt oder sogar in Stimulation verkehrt wird, liegt an der geringeren Flüchtigkeit der Salze, aus denen das Amin erst durch eine hydrolytische Spaltung in Freiheit gesetzt werden kann. Flüchtige Säurekomponenten treten an der Metalloberfläche als aggressive Substanzen hinsichtlich der Adsorption in kinetische Konkurrenz mit Dichamin, deren Ergebnis für die Korrosion entscheidend ist. Es entstehen mehr order weniger hydrophile Salzschichten, die eine Inhibition durch das Amin erschweren. Die salpetrige Säure stellt auf Grund ihrer oxydativen Eigenschaften einen Sonderfall dar. Sie wird aus ihren Salzen durch hydrolytische Spaltung in Freiheit gesetzt und ist so leicht flüchtig, daß sie zum Antransport an die Metalloberfläche nicht die Verbindung mit dem Dichamin zu Dichan benötigt. Eine synergetische Verstärkung der Inhibitorwirkung bei Kombination von Dichamin und salpetriger Säure tritt nicht ein, da die Wirkung des Dichamins von keinem seiner Salze erreicht, geschweige denn übertroffen wird.

    Description / Table of Contents: Polarisation phenomena during the segregation of smooth lead coatings from a new complex lead acetate bathThe current density/potential curves in solutions of complex compounds of lead sulphate in lead acetate permit the conclusion that the grain refinement is not due to a stronger cathodic polarisation. The reason is, in fact, the blocking of the active centres on the cathode surface.This has the effect of preventing the otherwise predominant growth of the lead crystals in the direction perpendicular to the cathode surface and parallel to the current lines. The complex dissolved lead sulphate has a stronger grain refining effect than organic additives to the bath.
    Notes: Die Stromdichte-Potential-Kurven in Lösungen von Komplexverbindungen des Bleisulfats in Bleiacetat und Ammoniumacetat lassen den Schluß zu, daß die Kornverfeinerung nicht auf eine stärkere kathodische Polarisation zurückzuführen ist. Maßgebend dafür ist vielmehr die Blockierung der aktiven Zentren an der Kathodenoberfläche. Dadurch wird das sonst vorherrschende Wachstum der Bleikristalle in Senkrechter Richtung zur Kathodenoberfläche und parallel zu den Stromlinien unterbunden. Das komplex gelöste Bleisulfat wirkt stärker kornverfeinernd als organische Zusätze im Bad.

    Description / Table of Contents: Disconnection or switch-over techniques applied to the measurements of potentials for cathodic corrosion protectionWith cathodic corrosion protection, it is necessary to measure the potential if adequate protection is to be ensured. When measuring the potential of an electrode passed by a current, the measurements always include an ohmic voltage drop so that the result errs on the negative side. By resorting to cut-out or switch-over techniques, this voltage drop can be eliminated. In that case, however, it is possible that too high an amount of voltage is being deducted so that the result errs on the positive side.The error caused by applying the cut-out or switch-over technique is so small as to be negligible. For switch-over processes, it can be proved theoretically that the error must be smaller than 50 mV. No similar estimate can be made in the case of cut-out processes; but test results show that, in this case, too, the error is very small. The cut-out or switch-over technique can be applied, with negligible error, to the measurements of potentials in cathodic corrosion protection.
    Notes: Beim kathodischen Korrosionsschutz ist die Potentialmessung für die Kontrolle eines ausreichenden Schutzes notwendig. Bei der Potentialmessung einer stromdurchflossenen Elektrode wird immer ein Ohmscher Spannungsabfall miterfaßt, so daß der Meßwert zu negative erscheint. Durch eine Aus- bzw. Umschalttechnik kan dieser Spannungsabfall eliminiert werden. Hierbei ist es aber möglich, daß ein zu hoher Spannungsbetrag abgezogen wird, so daß der Meßwert zu positiv erscheint.Der bei der Aus- bzw. Umschalttechnik verursachte Fehler ist vernachlässigbar klein. Für Umschaltprozesse kann theoretisch hergeleitet werden, daß der Fehler kleiner als 50 mV ist. Für Ausschaltprozesse kann eine ähnliche Abschätzung nicht durchgeführt werden. Jedoch zeigen Versuchsergebnisse, daß auch in diesem Falle der Fehler sehr klein ist. Die Aus- bzw. Umschalttechnik kann für Potentialmessungen beim kathodischen Korrosionsschutz mit vernachlässigbarem Fehler angewendet werden.

The formation affinities are determined graphically from the equation ΔF° = f(n · O.), resp. ΔF° = f' (n. OH). The regions in which formation of chromium oxides and hydroxids takes place are represented in an affinity (A)/overtension (ΔE) diagram. The pH-dependent inhibiting power of the chromates is explained by the affinity relations in the chemically coupled reactions, i.e. the anodic electrode reaction of Fe and the cathodic electrode reaction of Cr.

    Description / Table of Contents: Radiographical investigations into the SiO2—V2O5 systemIn connection with research into the inhibiting effect of amorphous SiO2 on oil ash corrosion in gas turbines, the SiO2—V2O3 system was subjected to radiographical investigations. It was found that, at temperatures up to 1200° C, no compounds are formed between the components of this system. Nor was it possible to observe the formation of mixed crystals. However, during heat treatment, vanadium pentoxide has the effect of speeding up the crystallisation of amorphous SiO2 (Aerosil). Depending on the test conditions, one thereby obtains cristobalite or tridymite, or the disordered or polytype-structure forms of these modifications.
    Notes: Im Zusammenhang mit dem Studium der inhibitorischen Wirkung von amorphem SiO2 auf die Ölaschenkorrosion bei Gasturbinen wurden im System SiO2—V2O5 röntgenographische Untersuchungen angestellt. Dabei zeigte sich, daß zwischen den Komponenten dieses Systems bei Temperaturen bis zu 1200° C keine Verbindungsbildung eintritt. Auch die Bildung von Mischkristallen konnte nicht beobachtet werden. Vanadiumpentoxyd übt aber während einer Hitzebehandlung übt aber während einer Hitzebehandlung auf amorphes SiO2 (Aerosil) eine kristallisationsbeschleunigende Wirkung aus. Je nach den Versuchsbedingungen entstehen dabei Cristobalit oder Tridymit bzw. die fehlgeordneten oder strukturpolytypen Formen dieser Modifikationen.

    Notes: Im ersten Teil der Untersuchung wurde 1,5 Jahre lang in jedem Monat („Monatsversuche“) und auch in längeren Versuchen festgestellt, wieviel Schwefeldioxyd rostendes Eisen aus der natürlichen Luft aufnimmt und in welchem Verhältnis dieses Schwefeldioxyd zu dem entstandenen Rost steht. Dabei wurde gefunden: Die von rostendem Eisen aus der Luft aufgenommene Schwefeldioxydmenge betrug (in g/m2 · Tag) berechnet) im kalten Halbjahr 60 bis 140%, im warmem Halbjahr 103 bis 120% derjenigen Schwefeldioxydmenge, die von sodagetränktem Filtrierpapier aufgenommen wurde.Im Winter war die von dem rostenden Eisen täglich aufgenommene Schwefeldioxydmenge etwa viermal so groß als im Sommer.Je aufgenommenes Schwefeldioxyd-Molekül rosteten im Winter etwa 15 bis 20, im Sommer etwa 30 bis 40 Atome Eisen. Im Winter war jedoch wegen der etwa viermal so großen Schwefeldioxyd-Aufnahme die Verrostung etwa doppelt so rasch als im Sommer.

    Notes: Die verhältnismäß hohen Partialdrucke des Wasserstoffes, wie sie in der katalytischen Reformierung von Benzin, in der hydrierenden Entschwefelung von gekrackten Erdölfraktionen und in der Ammoniak-Synthese zur Anwendung gelangen, machen eine Bestimmung der zulässigen Anwendungsgrenzen für Stähle, die bei der Errichtung von Vetriebsanlagen verwendet werden, notwendig. Wasserstoff ist unter normalen Bedingungen praktisch unwirksam gegen Kohlenstoffstahl, aber bei hohen Temperaturen und Drucken wirkt er korrodierend. Unter den letzteren Bedingungen bildet sich atomarer Wasserstoff, der in den Stahl hineindiffundiert. Wenn dieser Wasserstoff mit Eisencarbid reagiert, bildet sich Methan, das nicht aus dem Stahl hinauswandern kann. Hobe Innendrucke entwickeln sich, die allmählich von einer solchen Größenordnung sind, daß der Stahl an seinen Korngrenzen Risse aufweist.Im hoben Temperatur-Druck-Bereich wird Wasserstoffkorrosion dadurch vermieden, daß man Carbidstabilisierende Elemente, wie Molybdän, Vanadium, Titan, Chrom oder Woldfram hinzufügt. Diese Mitteilung beschreibt die praktischen Anwendungsgrenzen fü Kohlenstoffstahl und eine Reihe handelsüblicher Chrom-Molybdän-Stähle in Kontakt mit Wasserstoff. Die Wirkung von Spuren legierender Elemente auf die Verhinderung von Wasserstoffkorrosion wird auch behandelt. Inkubationsperioden, bevor der Wasserstoff den Kohlenstoffstahl angreift, sind in einer Tabelle niedergelegt.

    Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion of brass tubes in condensers and oil coolersThe article begins with a survey of the typical cases of corrosion damage to condenser and cooler tubes, and of the properties, especially the corrosion resistance, of normal tube materials. There follows a critical appraisal of several cases of tube corrosion damage in Danish power stations, most of which can be ascribed to the effects of external currents. A more detailed description is given of cases of cooler tube damage encountered in a large Danish power station. These cases have given rise to systematic corrosion tests carried out by the author with different tube materials in the cooling water duct of the power station, and to realistic long-time laboratory tests with SoMs 76 with 0.05 As. In the course of these trials, it has been possible to obtain a considerable clarification of the influence of such factors as cooling water temperature, cooling water velocity, cooling water composition (especially the effect of gases and cooper compounds), and natural and artificial coatings.
    Notes: Vorangestellt wird ein Überblick über die typischen Korrosionsschäden an Kondensator- und Kühlerrohren und über die Eigenschaften, insbesondere das Korrosionsverhalten, der gebräuchlichen Rohrwerkestoffe. Es folgt eine kritische Betrachtung mehrerer, in dänischen Kraftwerken aufgetretener Rohrkorrosionsschäden, die zumeist auf Fremdstrom-Einwirkung zurückgeführt wurden. Anschließend werden Kühlerrohrschäden, die in einem dänischen Großkraftwerk auftraten, etwas ausführlicher beschrieben. Sie veranlaßten die Durchführung eigener systematischer Korrosionsversuche mit verschiedenen Rohrwerkstoffen im Kühlwasserkanal des Kraftwerks und die praxisnahen Korrosions-Langzeitversuche im Laboratorium mit SoMs 76 mit 0,05 As, bei denen der Einfluß der Kühlwassertemperatur, -geschwindigkeit und -zusammensetzung, insbesondere der Einfluß von Gasen und Kupfersalzen, und der Einfluß natürlicher und künstlicher Deckschichten untersucht und weitgehend geklärt werden konnte.

    Description / Table of Contents: Economic criteria for combating refinery corrosionWith some few exceptions, measures taken to fight refinery corrosion must be based upon economic considerations. Some cost schemes have therefore been suggested for the economic assessment of such measures. These schemes are mostly based upon momentary value and installation cost, life to be expected and cost of corrosion protection. In the case of underground pipelines, the decision must mostly be made between protection and renewal of the old line; the assessment requires a cost comparison between leak repair and cathodic protection. Leak repair will generally be more economic on long distance lines, while cathodic protections will be more advantageous on industrial premises, because shutdown for repairs may be costly. As regards corrosion cost schemes for the oil industry, corrosion resistant alloys are attributed to the corrosion account only if their selection was guided by corrosion resistance and not by e.g. better availability. No unanimity exists, however, regarding the part of maintenance costs (including shutdown costs due to maintenance operations) to be attributed to the corrosion account.
    Notes: Mit Ausnahme einiger weniger Sonderfälle müssen Korrosionsschutzmaßnahmen wirtschaftlich gerechtfertigt sein. Daher wurden verschiedene Kostenschemen zur Beurteilung der Wirschaftlichkeit vorgeschlagen, bei denen der Zeitwert and die Installationskosten der Anlage, die vermutliche Lebensdauer und die Kosten des Korrosionsschutzes den Maßstab bilden. Bei unterirdischen Rohrleitungen ist meist zu entscheiden zwischen Schutz oder Erneuerung der alten Leitung. Dabei ist zu prüfen, ob die Kosten für die Beseitigung einzelner Leckstellen nicht geringer sind also die Anlage kathodischen Schutzes. In Fernleitungen dürfte meist die Reparatur vorteilhafter sein, während in Industriebetrieben der kathodische Schutz vorzuziehen sein dürfte, da dort die Stillstandszeiten stark ins Gewicht fallen. Bei den für erdölverarbeitende Anlagen aufgestellten Kostenschemen werden wiederum die höherbeständigen Legierungen nur dann dem Korrosionskonto zugerechnet, wenn wirklich die Korrosionsbeständigkeit entscheidend für die Wahl war und nicht etwa die bessere Liefermöglichkeit. Keine Einigkeit besteht jedoch darüber, wie weit die Wartungskosten und die wartungsbedingten Stillstandszeiten dem Korrosionskonto zuzurechnen sind.
