Oog voor Elkaar is enerzijds een theorie over stedelijke omgeving, publieke familiariteit en vertrouwen. Anderzijds is het een praktijkgericht, op alledaagse verhalen gebaseerd pleidooi voor zorgvuldiger vormgeving en beheer van stedelijke openbare ruimte.

    Description: Het woord 'erfgoed' wordt tegenwoordig vooral toegepast in het begrippenpaar 'cultureel erfgoed'. Een ander gebruik van het woord 'erfgoed' richt zich juist op de immateriële betekenis van het woord. Dan gaat het onder meer om de geestelijke erfenis van een denker of kunstenaar. In die laatste betekenis heeft het begrip 'erfgoed' een langere geschiedenis dan in de eerste. In Erfgoed. De geschiedenis van een begrip worden de verschillende geschiedenissen van het begrip gereconstrueerd en geanalyseerd. Allereerst wordt aandacht besteed aan de juridische herkomst en ontwikkeling van het woord 'erfgoed'. Willem Frijhoff belicht de religieuze dimensie ervan. Andere auteurs richten zich op verwante begrippen, zoals 'monument' of 'oudheden'. Eco Haitsma Mulier besteedt aandacht aan het begrip 'erflaters', bekend geworden door de beroemde publicatie Erflaters van onze beschaving van Jan en Annie Romein (1938). Eric Ketelaar, Gerard Rooijakkers en anderen bespreken elk een bepaald werkingsveld binnen het cultureel erfgoed: archieven, literatuur, archeologie, volkskunde. De bundel wordt afgesloten met een beschouwing van Wessel Krul over de behoefte van sommigen zich af te zetten tegen de erfgoedgedachte of zelfs de drang om erfgoed te vernietigen.

    Description: Deze tentoonstelling kwam tot stand op initiatief van de Academische Overheid van de K.U. Leuven. Ter gelegenheid van de vierhonderdvijftigste verjaring van Erasmus overlijden leek het gepast op een of andere manier de aandacht van een breder publiek te vestigen op een der grootste figuren die ooit in het Leuvens universitair milieu is werkzaam geweest. Deze verjaring valt bovendien samen met het opzetten van een samenwerkingsverband onder de Europese universiteiten waarin Leuven een rol wenst te spelen en waaraan Erasmus naam werd verbonden. Een zinvolle associatie, want, zoals verder in deze publicatie zal blijken, Erasmus schrijven en drijven heeft een onmisbare impuls gegeven aan de opbouw op Europees vlak van een werkelijk internationale cultuur die de middeleeuwse gedachtenwereld moest aflossen. Talrijk zijn de Europese universiteiten waar Erasmus een tijdlang heeft gestudeerd of gewerkt, Parijs, Leuven, Cambridge, Turijn, ... en nog talrijker die universiteiten waar hij vrienden, bewonderaars of tegenstanders vond.

    Description: What does it mean to violate the law on a theatrical stage? This is the central question in the following examination of modern theatre, beginning with the avant-garde, but also including the contemporary and iconoclastic work of the Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio. For the historical avant-garde, art could be the gateway to a new and liberated reality. But then all of existing reality first had to be demolished, and its laws consistently violated. Ultimately, this transgressive programme ends in discouragement and self-sabotage. Such an 'anti-theatre' has been explored most extensively in the writings of the French director and essayist Antonin Artaud. A careful exploration of Artaud's work, emphasizing his actual theatrical productions, shows that this paradox does not necessarily lead to a dead end. Generalized transgression may lead to a theatre that belongs more to philosophy than to art itself.

    Description: Ranging from Polish inspirations in contemporary authors such as Bernlef, Frank Westerman and Erwin Mortier, over the Central European successes of the now forgotten Jo van Ammers-Küller, to the Bulgarian character Firmin Debeljanov in The Sorrow of Belgium: with its focus on the various interrelations between the contemporary literature of the Low countries and the so-called smaller literary cultures located between the German and the Russian language areas, the volume Van Eeden tot heden offers a multi-faceted perspective on a hitherto barely explored topic in twentieth-century European literature. Due to the academic background of the contributing authors the emphasis is on Polish, Hungarian and Czech case studies, though the Balkans are also being dealt with – albeit less prominently. Whereas some contributions search for contacts, links and influences between literatures and literators, some other chapters set up textual encounters in which authors and their works are compared from a thematic, poetic, stylistic or generic angle. Apart from these comparative endeavors, another group of contributors offer reception analysis regarding the overall topic. In the last part of the volume the focus is on issues of (national) representation and the discursive strategies that are used for it.

    Description: In the 15th and 16th century a special institute developed in Flanders and Brabant: the chamber of rhetoric. Regular citizens started theater and lyricks, in small closed groups and in public. This study gives an overview of 227 chambers of rhetoric, the rhetorical culture in the Southern Netherlands and gives a fresh new look on the cultural history of the Netherlands.
    Description: In de vijftiende en zestiende eeuw ontwikkelde zich in Vlaanderen en Brabant een bijzondere instituut: de rederijkerskamer. Gewone stedelingen legden zich in gildenverband toe op toneel en lyriek, zowel in besloten kring als publiekelijk, naar aanleiding van allerlei feestelijkheden. In deze studie wordt, vertrekkend van een repertorium van 227 rederijkerskamers, de rederijkerscultuur in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden in kaart gebracht. Het uitvoerige bronnenmateriaal biedt nieuwe, vaak verrassende inzichten in het ontstaan van de rederijkerscultuur, de sociale achtergrond van de rederijkers, de verhouding van de rederijkerskamers tot stad en vorst, de betrokkenheid in de Reformatie en de Opstand en, tenslotte, de veranderende functie in de zeventiende eeuw. Dit leidt ook tot een verfrissende kijk op de cultuurgeschiedenis van de Nederlanden. De auteur komt tot de conclusie dat zich in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden een bijzonder dynamische stedelijke cultuur vormde waarbinnen de basis werd gelegd voor het 'mirakel' van de Gouden Eeuw.

    Description: Lang ging het debat over de toekomst van de sociale zekerheid vooral over de vraag wat er aan technische aanpassingen aan het stelsel aangebracht moeten worden. Inmiddels dienen zich twee fundamentelere vragen aan. Allereerst lijkt het stelsel niet meer per definitie sociale zekerheid te bieden omdat het idee over wat zekerheid is, zelf aan verandering onderhevig is: inkomenscompensatie is niet per definitie de hoogste vorm van zekerheid. Ten tweede ontwikkelt de moderne economie zich op een manier die steeds minder past bij het stelsel van sociale zekerheid: contracten zijn steeds minder permanent, de termen werkgever en werknemer zijn steeds minder passend en werken en leren zijn steeds minder te scheiden. Verkend wordt langs welke wijze het stelsel zich zou moeten ontwikkelen om een adequaat antwoord te zijn op deze ontwikkelingen.

Van de zestiende tot de negentiende eeuw speelde de koloniale wereld een steeds belangrijkere rol in de economie van Holland. De provincie werd een draaischijf voor Europese goederen, kapitaal, arbeid en kennis. Vooraanstaande Zuid-Hollandse regenten als Johan de Witt spanden zich in voor de slavenhandel. In de negentiende eeuw zorgde raciaal denken bij Zuid-Hollandse politici zoals Jan Willem Gefken of James Loudon voor het in stand houden van de koloniale hiërarchie en het uitbuiten van koloniale onderdanen.

    Description: On 13 March 1908, the National Bureau for the Collection of Data on the Trade in Women and Girls was founded. The 47-year-old H.J.A. Simons de Ruyter was appointed National Police Commissioner. He proved to be the best person for the job owing to his passion for gathering and recording vital data, his knowledge of languages and his dedicated, helpful and generous personality. The Bureau and the police worked with women’s organisations to monitor activities and carry out checks at stations and ports where women and girls who could be exposed to a lewd lifestyle might be travelling. After legislation on morality was passed in 1911, the Bureau was given an additional task in 1914 to tackle trade in lewd publications. After the First World War erupted that year, there was not much more to do at the Bureau, which led Simons de Ruyter to support the immigration authorities in Amsterdam at his own request. This consisted mainly of finding accommodation, providing healthcare, food, clothing and financial assistance and helping to repatriate Belgian refugees.

    Description: This colloquium focuses on urban and princely space in the Duchy of Brabant in the late Middle Ages and early modern period. The focus is on how territorial developments were perceived in different social milieus. After all, urban elites, the monarch and his entourage had different - but sometimes similar - opinions about what Brabant actually was and used various media to communicate their ideas about it. Administrative, narrative and cartographic sources, architecture, literature and art bear witness to this. The Belgian-Dutch "Stichting Colloquium De Brabantse Stad" organizes an international meeting every three years at which various aspects of the history of the cities and of urban life in the old Duchy of Brabant are examined. The colloquium is organized alternately in the provinces of Antwerp, Flemish Brabant, Walloon Brabant, North Brabant and in the Brussels Capital Region. The XIXth colloquium, taking place in Brussels at the Université Saint-Louis, is being organized in cooperation with the NWO research project Imagining a territory.

Het publiek moet via live-beelden het doen en laten in de rechtszaal kunnen volgen, rechters hebben volgens de minister aan hun 'imago' te werken en de samenleving wenst inzicht in de kosten en baten van het 'product' geschilbeslechting. Er is, zowel binnen als buiten de rechtszaal, een roep om transparantie, in de zin van moderne varianten van de klassieke openbaarheid van rechtspraak. Centraal in deze verkenning staat de vraag in hoeverre de rechtspraak haar werkwijze en strategie moet aanpassen in het licht van deze ontwikkeling. Wat is, als het op transparantie aankomt, een gerechtvaardigde vraag vanuit de samenleving en waar begint een onwenselijke inmenging met de onafhankelijke positie van de rechterlijke macht? Tot op heden heeft dit instituut de kaarten in hoofdzaak ingezet op transparantie in de zin van meer zichtbaarheid en begrijpelijkheid. Het is de vraag of dat voldoende zal zijn. Deze verkenning beoogt vanuit een diversiteit aan invalshoeken en veel nieuw empirisch materiaal - burgers en rechters zelf aan het woord - een bijdrage te leveren aan dit vraagstuk.

    Description: During the First World War, the German occupier tried to split Belgium internally. This was done by pursuing a Flamenpolitik, a policy aimed at scaring the Flemish, or at least the Flemish movement, against Belgium. That worked, because a small number of Flemish supporters, the so-called activists, did indeed collaborate. From the late summer of 1914, Berlin in the occupied country would incessantly bombard the Flemish movement with a large-scale media campaign. The German services, supported by their Austrian allies, mainly made use of pamphlets and the written press, not only in Belgium but also in the neutral Netherlands. In the summer of 1915 activism was a fact: an anti-Belgian Flemish nationalism, the consequences of which have been felt to date, had seen the light of day. The propaganda underlying it was so ingenious and clever that it not only convinced contemporaries, but still misleads historians even more than a century later. It is a fine example of “fake news” avant la lettre.
    Description: Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog probeerde de Duitse bezetter België intern te splijten. Dat gebeurde door het voeren van een Flamenpolitik, een beleid dat erop gericht was de Vlamingen of in elk geval de Vlaamse beweging in het harnas te jagen tegen België. Dat lukte, want een klein deel Vlaamsgezinden, de zogenaamde activisten, collaboreerde inderdaad. Vanaf de nazomer van 1914 zou Berlijn in het bezette land de Vlaamse beweging onophoudelijk bestoken met een grootscheepse mediacampagne. De Duitse diensten, gesteund door hun Oostenrijkse bondgenoten, maakten daarbij vooral gebruik van vlugschriften en de geschreven pers, niet alleen in België maar ook in het neutrale Nederland. In de zomer van 1915 was het activisme een feit: een anti-Belgisch Vlaams-nationalisme, waarvan de gevolgen tot op heden voelbaar zijn, had het daglicht gezien. De propaganda die eraan ten grondslag lag was zó vernuftig en ingenieus dat ze niet alleen tijdgenoten overtuigde, maar zelfs meer dan een eeuw later nog steeds historici misleidt. Het is een mooi staaltje van “fake news” avant la lettre.

    Description: De Indonesische onafhankelijkheidsoorlog is in Nederland lange tijd aangeduid met versluierende termen als ‘politionele acties’. In werkelijkheid was het een ware oorlog waarin Nederlandse troepen met moderne wapens de strijd aangingen. De inzet van artillerie, bommenwerpers en scheepsgeschut werd niet geschuwd in het streven de gewapende ‘opstand’ de kop in te drukken. Wat waren de gevolgen van bombardementen en beschietingen met dergelijk grof geschut? In welke gevallen werden deze middelen ingezet en in hoeverre werd gepoogd burgerslachtoffers te voorkomen? Voor het eerst is op systematische wijze de toepassing van vooral artillerie en luchtstrijdkrachten in de onafhankelijkheidsstrijd onderzocht. Grof geschut biedt zowel statistische overzichten als analyses van gevechten waarbij op grote schaal zware wapens zijn ingezet. Daarbij komt ook de vraag aan de orde hoe de inzet van deze middelen zich verhield tot het geweldsgebruik in het algemeen. Deze studie vormt een onmisbare bijdrage aan onze kennis over de aard en omvang van extreem geweldgebruik door de Nederlandse krijgsmacht in de Indonesische onafhankelijkheidsoorlog.

    Description: This book explores images of the house in Dutch-language poetry from the postwar period. On the one hand the archetypical notion of the house has always had an established place in poetry. It is connected to the meaning of house as a building, but even more so as an imaginative house or a home. On the other hand the house is a rich metaphorical concept that is often used for expressing poetical ideas. In a historical survey of modern Dutch-language poetry different images of the house are presented. The overview shows that the choice of certain metaphorical concepts is connected to literary and extra literary contexts, and to the poetical ideas of poets. Conceptual integration – blending theory – is used throughout this book as a theoretical frame. From this perspective poems are regarded as a complex blend, a network of connections which are constructed during the reading and interpreting processes. Finally, the book shows how metaphorical blends are integrated in concrete poems and which kind of house images result from this process.

Reeds kort na de Belgische onafhankelijkheid in 1830 zien we de aanzet van wat men een katholieke zuil is gaan noemen. Godsdienstige groepen en kerken verkeren steeds in een spanning tussen een hang naar maatschappelijk isolement en bekeringsijver, tussen bescherming en verovering. Deze termen worden in de christelijke organisatiewereld dan ook ervaren als geladen, negatieve begrippen. In deze KADOC-bundel noemen sociologen en historici het verschijnsel nochtans onomwonden bij de naam.     Description: In de zeventiende eeuw ging vrijwel iedere toneelvoorstelling gepaard met muziek. Er werd niet alleen gemusiceerd tussen de bedrijven, maar ook in het toneelstuk zelf. Muziek diende als achtergrond en versiering en was functioneel geïntegreerd in de handeling van het drama. Uit de rekeningen van de Amsterdamse Schouwburg blijkt dat men professionele musici in dienst had; daarnaast werd er gezongen en gedanst door de acteurs. In navolging van buitenlandse toneelmuziekstudies wordt in dit boek voor het eerst uitvoerig aandacht besteed aan de zeventiende-eeuwse theatermuziek in de Nederlanden. Centraal staat de toneeldichter Jan Harmensz Krul, die de muziek op vakkundige manier in zijn toneelstukken verweefde en die in 1634 de Amsterdamse Musyck-kamer oprichtte - een stichting die geheel gewijd was aan het samengaan van poëzie en muziek op het toneel. Aan de hand van vijf karakteristieke muzikale scènes uit zijn werk (de wachterscène, gevangenisscène, serenade, offerscène en slaapscène) wordt een beeld geschetst van de toenmalige Amsterdamse toneelmuziekpraktijk. Zulke muzikale scènes waren ook geliefd bij andere toneeldichters, in binnen- en buitenland. Zij hadden voor het publiek een signaalfunctie: het waren direct herkenbare situaties, ijkpunten in het drama, die standaard met muziek werden geassocieerd. Dichters varieerden hierop naar hartelust. Voor toneelschrijver en toeschouwer waren die stereotiepe muzikale scènes wat muziek was voor de personages in de toneelstukken: een effectief middel om te manipuleren - een perfecte verleiding, van oog, oor en hart.

Daarbij probeerden zowel edellieden als koninklijke en keizerlijke vertegenwoordigers het conflict op diplomatieke en verzoenende wijze te beslechten. Deze studie gaat over deze vredehandel. Welke verzoeningspogingen werden ondernomen? Waarom werden die telkens opnieuw ondernomen? En vooral, in welke mate konden deze toenaderingspogingen succes boeken? Op basis van archivalische en gedrukte bronnen brengt dit boek de redenen, modaliteiten en mogelijkheden van de vredesonderhandelingen tijdens de beginjaren van de Opstand in kaart. Vanuit de raak- en breekpunten tussen adellijke en Habsburgse verzoeningspogingen werpt dit boek een nieuw licht op de vraag waarom de onderhandelde hereniging met Filips II gedeeltelijk plaatsvond in 1579-1580 en zo een bijkomend motief creëerde voor het Plakkaat van Verlatinge in 1581.

    Description: This book presents a classic legal study of banning organisations in Dutch law. One of the main research questions is when, according to our law, an organisation is right for a ban. Must the organisation commit criminal offences, or are there other starting points for banning it? Another key question is what kind of organisations can be banned. Are, for example, political parties and denominations excluded, given the special function of these organisations in our society? Other important questions are how the procedure works, which body is authorised to ban and how legal protection against a ban is designed. In answering these questions, the author focuses on the fundamental question of the extent to which the regulation complies with the requirements arising from the freedom of association enshrined in our Constitution and treaties binding under international law. By no means all regulations meet these requirements. With a comparative law analysis of German and French law, the author makes recommendations to improve our prohibition regime on these issues

    Description: Issues that touch on the separation of powers, that is, on the relationship between parliament, government and the judiciary, and on the relationship between the Public Prosecution Service, the legal profession and the judge, have been rife in the news of the past twenty years ( for example IRT affair, acquittal of terror suspects, trial Wilders). The separation of powers is part of most Dutch definitions of the rule of law. The research resulting from this WODC publication is aimed at identifying trends and patterns in messages (from newspapers, television news bulletins, news websites, Twitter) over the past twenty years that could affect confidence in the rule of law. It was examined whether text mining, that is, automated text analysis or "content analysis", is an appropriate research tool.

Aangetoond wordt dat verschillende voetbalclubs supportersgeweld op verschillende wijzen ervaren en interpreteren. Het boek beschrijft op gedetailleerde wijze hoe de geweldsopvattingen, collectieve identiteit en rivaliteiten van hooligans tot stand komen en hoe deze zich verhouden tot de dominante club- en supporterscultuur. De sociale interactie tussen hooligans, supporters en autoriteiten staat hierbij centraal. Ramón Spaaij pleit voor een multi-institutioneel beleid met een grotere nadruk op sociale preventie. Hij wijst op het belang van het terugdringen van de drijfveren van hooliganisme, in het bijzonder de agressieve masculiene normen en de soms alomvattende wij-zijtegenstellingen van hooligans. Hij pleit voor de terugkomst van de gematigde fan met ware liefde voor het spel.

    Description: The Cold War was a tense time. The Netherlands took precautions to protect its people from potential disasters, in particular nuclear threats. One crucial aspect of this was the establishment of the Civil Defence Corps. The organisation played a key role in setting up command stations and training centres, such as the one in Overvoorde, Rijswijk, near The Hague, which ran exercises and training to prepare people for possible disasters. From large practice ruins to advanced alarm systems, the complex was fully equipped to deal with a broad range of threats. Although the threat of a nuclear attack subsided and the Civil Defence was officially disbanded in 1985, these command stations retained their importance. Many of them have since been repurposed, from storage sites to museums. The bunkers in Overvoorde now serve as an educational centre under the management of Korpora, the Public Safety Heritage Centre. By preserving these sites, we can ensure that future generations can learn from the past and the sacrifices that were made for their safety.

    Description: People are now more liberated to give meaning to their life and to select values they deem important. What effect does this have on conversations about meaning and spirituality with the upcoming generation? Nowadays, shared religious and church practices are not as prevalent as they once were. Is a personal testimony of how meaning and spirituality have developed in one's own life the or a way of communicating something to children, pupils, and students? One way of sharing a testimony is the 'spiritual autobiography', a practice that was developed in the US and later brought to the Netherlands by Jannet Delver. It is now used in universities and higher vocational schools. Also for group discussions with clients, writing and sharing one's spiritual biography has been found to contribute to (re)finding sources of strength in difficult times. In this book, the method is applied in an intergenerational context through a series of letters between the editor and his daughters Elsemarijn and Janneleen, along with an accompanying discussion. Additionally, many professionals and scientists provide their – personal – perspectives. Living as a search for the meaning of life need not be laborious, but rather engaging and contagious.

This honorary doctorate was awarded to him because of his tireless efforts for a strong, fair and equal constitutional state. This edition includes the laudation of honorary supervisor Roel Schutgens, the acceptance speech of Geert Corstens and the Van der Grint lecture given by Geert Corstens during the week of the Dies Natalis. Geert Corstens was president of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands from 2008 to 2014. Immediately after his appointment, he was known for his assertive attitude towards the political apparatus. The independence of the constitutional state should not be threatened by the wishes and needs of politicians and other outsiders, Corstens believed. He has also made a formidable contribution to public-oriented communication and explanation of the rule of law. Corstens also wrote, among other things, the books Our constitutional state and The judge seizes power: And other misconceptions about the democratic constitutional state to promote general communication about rights and democracy in the Netherlands. Corstens is also the author of the standard work Dutch criminal procedural law and was professor of criminal law at Radboud University from 1982 to 1995.

    Description: Crossing borders is a perilous undertaking, as this time of migrations and pandemics teaches us. Also for language-related cultural goods such as literary works, crossing those borders requires a lot of planning, strategic insights and a love for language and literature. After all, on their journey abroad, books bring with them other stories and cultural images, which in turn are filtered, if not manipulated, during the processes of selection and reception in the language of their destination. The study of this image (de)formation is therefore crucial in research into literary transfer. The authors of this collection respond to this by tracing the route of Dutch literature to Southern Europe and studying the image of Flanders and the Netherlands as expressed in translations through a combination of imagological and sociological translational findings. The conclusions in this collection show that the study of image formation in literary transfer can break through stereotypes and increase cultural awareness: crossing borders means pushing boundaries.

Het leek daarbij niet overbodig de figuur van professor Dondeyne nog even kort te belichten, zeker niet wanneer men aan de jongere lezers denkt. De wijze lag voor de hand: professor Vergote zelf heeft destijds in de Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses een In memoriam geschreven, dat ook de ouderen, die Dondeyne persoonlijk gekend hebben, ten zeerste zullen waarderen. Uit het Frans vertaald, gaat het hier de tekst van de lezingen vooraf. De laatste lezing, die in het Engels werd voorgedragen, werd door de auteur zelf in het Nederlands herschreven.

    Description: Marine painting, paintings of ships and the sea, is a four hundred year old traditional Dutch art discipline. In the nineteenth century the genre had a special artistic prestige and status. This study explores the background, training, studio practice, stylistic development and subject matters of the Dutch nineteenth-century marine painter. A Reference List of Marine Painters, which is a new overview of the true specialists in the genre in this period, is added. The key question is how marine painting was looked at by the marine painters themselves, their fellow painters at the artists associations, in art theory and in art criticism. It turns out that within Dutch art circles throughout the nineteenth century, marine painting was perceived as a bearer of national pride. By placing the genre in a broader cultural-historical context it reveals how marine painting, together with the glorification of maritime history, was embedded in nationalist ideology.

    Description: On 17 August 1945, two days after the Japanese surrender that also brought an end to the Second World War in Asia, Indonesia declared its independence. The declaration was not recognized by the Netherlands, which resorted to force in its attempt to take control of the inevitable process of decolonization. This led to four years of difficult negotiations and bitter warfare. In 2005, the Dutch government declared that the Netherlands should never have waged the war. The government’s 1969 position on the violence used by the Dutch armed forces during the war remained unchanged, however: although there had been ‘excesses’, on the whole the armed forces had behaved ‘correctly’. As the indications of Dutch extreme violence mounted, this official position proved increasingly difficult to maintain. In 2016, the Dutch government therefore decided to fund a broad study on the dynamics of the violence. The most important conclusions of that research programme are summarized in this book. The authors show that the Dutch armed forces used extreme violence on a structural basis, and that this was concealed both at the time and for many years after the war by the Dutch government and by society more broadly. All of this – like the entire colonial history – is at odds with the rose-tinted self-image of the Netherlands.

Het vormt een buffer tegen drugsgebruik, criminaliteit, gezondheidsproblemen (lichamelijk én psychisch) en wantrouwen (van mensen jegens elkaar en de gemeenschap). Streven naar meer gelijkheid is dan ook geen filantropische onderneming, maar een zinvolle en noodzakelijke activiteit om het welzijn van anderen én van onszelf te verbeteren. Sociale ongelijkheid is een complex vraagstuk. Wetenschappelijk inzicht, opgebouwd over een langere tijd en vanuit meerdere perspectieven, is onontbeerlijk voor structurele oplossingen. De Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) heeft een brede expertise op dit terrein. Ongelijkheid is een speerpunt in het onderzoek. Het Amsterdam Centre for Inequality Studies, verbonden aan de sociale faculteit van de UvA, combineert wetenschappelijke expertise op dit gebied met maatschappelijk engagement. Onderzoekers van verschillende disciplines werken er samen om greep te krijgen op het ontstaan én het voorkomen van ongelijkheid. De hoofdstukken in deze bundel laten hiervan mooie voorbeelden zien. De auteurs presenteren niet alleen wat ze al weten, maar formuleren ook nieuwe kennisvragen.     Description: By describing their present as ‘enlightened’, eighteenth-century intellectuals inevitably altered their relationship to the past. In search of an explanation for this Enlightenment, eighteenth-century authors created a historical narrative which connected European countries in a linear history from antiquity, through the barbarous Middle Ages, to the progress of the scientific revolution and, finally, to the enlightened present in which seventeenth-century knowledge was perceived as increasingly benefiting society as a whole. Even though this narrative served as a shared European history and identity, national varieties soon emerged. This book shows that, in the context of the European ‘Enlightened narrative’, the Dutch Republic formed an extraordinary case. Here, the narrative of progress collided with a simultaneous debate on national decline and a deeply rooted humanistic tradition. Dutch intellectuals, moreover, were forced to reconsider their national past and national identity. The Batavian myth, for two centuries the primary historical foundation of national identity, increasingly came to be viewed as ‘barbaric’. Consequently, the concept of a seventeenth-century Golden Age was invented. It replaced the Batavian myth with a celebration of seventeenth-century Dutch economic prosperity, commercial politeness and moral rectitude more in line with enlightened historical thought.

    Description: How to think philosophically about religion? The separation of church and state takes form in the nineteenth century. In public universities in the Netherlands, systematic, church-related theology is replaced by philosophy of religion. As a window on academic thinking about faith, Willem B. Drees, Leiden University's last professor of philosophy of religion, reads the work of his predecessors. They were mostly modernists, who expected to find their footing in the use of reason, in historical knowledge about religions, or in personal faith. After World War I, faith is perceived more as a wager, to trust that life is meaningful. Later, we see agnostic reticence that is religiously motivated, because God is always greater than we think, a mystery. And scholarly reticence, because in academic terms nothing definitive can be said about God. Do we thus see a development from modern certitude to charged silence?

The new issue of Cahier voor Literatuurwetenschap has two objectives. First, we wish to study the role of hermeneutics in other disciplines, such as the philosophy of history, theology, and the cognitive sciences.     Description: In this essay I discuss Buikema’s ideas about the specific function of literature in times of social upheaval and political violence. Buikema resists the current tendency to reduce engaged novels to their political views and statements about the world. To their author’s intentions, basically. A literary analysis has to do justice to the ways in which political themes are represented, which largely escape authorial control. Close (inter)textual analysis can arrive at different experiences of a work of art. Buikema illustrated this conviction with an analysis of Coetzee’s Disgrace. I continue her analysis and read Disgrace for its stunning literary representation of hegemonic masculinity and how a white macho man is transformed and healed. Women and blacks guide him in this process.

    Description: Scholen moeten aan dreigende schooluitvallers niet alleen onderwijs geven, maar ook alle sociaal-emotionele zorg en steun die nodig is om een plaats in de samenleving te veroveren. Alleen op scholen met een dergelijke brede taakopvatting bestaat een reële kans om te voorkomen dat de meest kwetsbare jongeren volledig buiten de maatschappij komen te staan. De regering moet scholen en ROC's actief stimuleren dit bredere 'plus-pakket' aan te bieden. Dat schrijft de Wetenschappelijke Raad voor het Regeringsbeleid (WRR) in zijn rapport aan de regering Vertrouwen in de school. Over de uitval van 'overbelaste' jongeren. In dit rapport richt de Raad zijn aandacht op één categorie van (dreigende) uitvallers, namelijk 'overbelaste' jongeren. Dat zijn jongeren die gebukt gaan onder een opeenstapeling van problemen, uiteenlopend van beperkte vaardigheden en gedragsproblemen tot gebroken gezinnen, armoede, schulden of verslaving. Bij deze jongeren is schooluitval vaak de voorbode van algehele maatschappelijke uitval. Op basis van vele gesprekken in het veld en bestudering van de binnen- en buitenlandse literatuur formuleert de Raad in dit rapport aanbevelingen voor een effectieve preventie van voortijdig schoolverlaten bij deze jongeren. De centrale aanbeveling van de WRR is dat scholen aan deze jongeren 'structuur' en 'verbondenheid' moeten bieden. De raad pleit voor een school die uitgaat van een bredere taakopvatting dan alleen het overdragen van kennis en noemt scholen met dergelijke brede maatschappelijke taakopvatting 'plusscholen'. De school kan zo uitgroeien tot veilige haven die tegenwicht biedt aan de chaos en risico's in hun leven.

    Description: Het vormsel: een omstreden sacrament. In Vlaanderen wordt het officieel verbonden met een plechtige herdenking van het doopsel en een geloofsbelijdenis. Voor de meesten betekent het vormsel een overgangsritueel, een toegangsticket tot de wereld van de volwassenen met alle daaraan verbonden voordelen, zoals horloge, bankrekening, vooraan in de auto zitten... Er zijn er die het beleven als een ""volwassen engagement"" in de Kerk, voor anderen is het een ""tot ziens"" of een adieu aan de Kerk. Was het vroeger anders? In deze bundel met bijdragen van historici, sociologen en theologen wordt aangetoond dat het vormsel, zoals wij dat nu kennen, een recent verschijnsel is. Pas in de 19de eeuw slaagde de Kerk erin het sacrament aan belang te doen winnen. Na het tweede Vaticaans Concilie kreeg het langzaam zijn huidige vorm en betekenis. Deze bundel benadert het vormsel vanuit verschillende invalshoeken. Het resultaat: een boeiende doorlichting, waaruit blijkt dat het vormsel als overgangsritueel nog toekomst heeft. In een kerkgemeenschap die wordt opgevat als een open volkskerk, biedt het vormsel de pastoraal nieuwe perspectieven. Mits een juiste aanwending van catechese en liturgie kan dit sacrament aangegrepen worden als een kans tot verdere evangelisering, zowel van jongeren als van volwassenen.

Woorden en uitspraakgewoonten uit etnolecten komen via de straatcultuur, muziek, media en bekende figuren (Ali B) in de taal van jongeren terecht. Het boek is rijkelijk geïllustreerd met voorbeelden uit onder meer populaire tienersoaps.

    Description: Het debat over de toekomst van de sociale zekerheid stond in de twintigste eeuw in het teken van twee kernvragen: wie komen er aanmerking voor sociale zekerheid en hoe moeten wie die zekerheid precies inrichten? Vanaf eind jaren zeventig komt dit model stevig onder druk te staan. Intussen is het stelsel een stuk soberder geworden en het beslag op de collectieve middelen grofweg gehalveerd. Vanaf eind jaren negentig diende zich een nieuw debat aan. Daarbij ging het om ontwikkelingen in de arbeidsmarkt met grote consequenties voor de sociale zekerheid: internationalisering, automatisering en flexibilisering van de arbeidsmarkt. In het afgelopen decennium is steeds voelbaarder geworden dat veel zekerheden die vroeger als zekerheid golden, dat niet meer zijn, of niet meer als zodanig beleefd worden. On the occasion of the centenary of Radboud University (1923-2023), researchers and professors from the Faculty of Theology present a series of easily comprehensible theological insights concerning both human frailties and the greatness of humanity. Using the deadly sins and a few virtues as a guiding framework, these essays explore lighthearted the boundaries, horizons, and ambiguities of human existence. This volume combines perspectives from Biblical studies, church history, systematic theology, and practical theology to address individual challenges and societal discussions. The seven deadly sins provide food for thought on what can go wrong in individual lives and in society. The classic list of pride (superbia), greed (avaritia), envy (invidia), lust (luxuria), gluttony (gula), wrath (ira), and sluggishness (acedia) still affect us. Virtues, on the other hand, are often less actively pursued, yet they inspire us to critically observe our surroundings: love (caritas), justice (iustitia), and fairness (aequitas). These insights often draw from the rich history of Nijmegen's Faculty of Theology. Not to imply that its approach is a unique breeding ground for vices, but rather to acknowledge the joyous occasion that spurred this collection.     Description: In the Indonesian war of independence, which had a strong guerrilla war character, intelligence was decisive for achieving military successes. No wonder that the Netherlands and the Republic of Indonesia waged a fierce intelligence battle between 1945 and 1949. Nevertheless, not much is known about the personnel, organization and working methods of the Dutch military intelligence services, which were to function as the eyes and ears of the army. This study examines this violent confrontation for intelligence in detail. To what extent have the Dutch services used torture and other forms of extreme violence? And why? How accurate was the intelligence they gathered about the Indonesian forces? What effects did their reports have on Dutch actions in the field – and on the decision-making of higher echelons? The tug-of-war over the crucial cooperation of the population and the extremely violent or otherwise violent actions of the Indonesian intelligence services are also discussed. The course of the espionage war is explained based on the interactions between the Dutch and Indonesian services, which continuously tried to outsmart each other. This book shows that this grim and complex struggle behind the scenes had a major – and so far underexposed – impact on the Dutch-Indonesian war.

    Description: This book studies literary sociability during the belle époque (1890-1914) by comparing and relating organizations of authors with intellectual sociability in general. Drawing on a combination of methods including social network analysis, existing histories of Dutch and French speaking literature are questioned. This study shows, for instance, how author’s societies and literary journals were functional in the symbolic struggle between ‘dilettante’ writers on the one hand and self declared ‘professional’ authors on the other. It concludes that Belgian authorship was shaped within a social space that was much broader than the national social space, especially as far as the social construction of the Belgian author-intellectual was concerned. As such, being an intellectual became an important category of personal identity.

    Description: This third volume of Lage Landen Studies offers a glimpse of recent international and internationalizing trends in Dutch Studies. It presents a comparative view of the virtually synchronic dynamics of the translation, promotion and reception of contemporary Dutch author Arnon Grunberg in five Romance languages between 1996 and 2009. This interdisciplinary approach, which focuses on the crossroads of language, literature and culture, as well as on aspects of the sociologies of literature and translation, is combined with views from translation studies, comparative literature, and bibliology in order to build bridges between theory and practice. The first part is devoted to the seldom-heard perspective of the translator and dissects the circumstances in which works by Arnon Grunberg – and by his heteronym Marek van der Jagt – are translated, promoted and received in five Romance languages. The function and ‘visual translation’ of book covers are also analyzed. Notwithstanding the relative homogeneity of the languages, their cultural background and geographical location, remarkable differences come to light. The first part rounds off by looking at the promotional possibilities of writer’s tours and translation workshops in the target countries.

    Description: A storm at sea, hanging cliffs, volcano eruptions at night, threatening thunderclouds over a desolate mountain landscape: all these phenomena incite both fear and pleasure, astonishment and fascination. We call them sublime, after the feeling of the sublime. In the eighteenth century the sublime became the exciting alternative to the beautiful. The concept has ancient roots, but branches out into French, British, German, and Dutch cultures. Stemming originally from rhetoric, in the course of the eighteenth century it became an aesthetic, philosophical and literary concept. In this study the history of the sublime is told for the first time in Dutch. This book focuses on Dutch contributions on the sublime, in the light of the international history of the concept of the sublime. From the earliest translations to the original ideas of Johannes Kinker and Willem Bilderdijk: the Dutch sublime reflects both the entwinement with the European Enlightenment and the specific nature of Dutch culture in the long eighteenth century.
    Description: Een storm op zee, overhangende kliffen, nachtelijke vulkaanuitbarstingen, dreigende donderwolken boven een woest berglandschap: al deze verschijnselen boezemen tegelijk angst en genot, ontzetting en fascinatie in. We noemen ze subliem, naar het verheven gevoel dat ze oproepen. Het sublieme gold in de achttiende eeuw als het spannende alternatief voor het schone. Het begrip heeft antieke wortels, maar ook Franse, Engelse, Duitse, en Nederlandse vertakkingen. Oorspronkelijk een begrip uit de retorica groeide het in de achttiende eeuw uit tot een esthetisch, filosofisch en literair concept. In deze studie wordt voor het eerst de geschiedenis van het verhevene in het Nederlands verteld. Centraal in dit boek staan een aantal Nederlandse bijdragen over het verhevene, die hier worden gelezen in het kader van de internationale begripsgeschiedenis van het sublieme. Van de vroegste vertalingen tot de eigenzinnige ideeën van Johannes Kinker en Willem Bilderdijk: in het Nederlandse verhevene wordt zowel de verbondenheid met de Europese Verlichting als het bijzondere van de eigen cultuur in de lange achttiende eeuw weerspiegeld.

In een uitgebreide conclusie brengen de redacteurs de belangrijkste rode draden en lacunes in de gesprekken samen: wat zit er in het Belgische collectieve geheugen, wat niet en hoe komt dat geheugen naar boven in de gesprekken.     Description: Van Airbnb tot Uber, en van Nextdoor tot Facebook, een steeds groter deel van het maatschappelijk en economisch verkeer verloopt via online platformen. De opkomst van deze platformen leidt tot optimistische vertogen. Doordat ze bestaande praktijken en instituties - van taximarkt tot lokale democratie - letterlijk en figuurlijk 'ontregelen', zouden deze platforms leiden tot economische en maatschappelijke innovatie. Kort samengevat luidt hun belofte: minder overhead en minder overheid. Wat in deze discussie nog onderbelicht blijft, is de rol die platformen spelen bij de behartiging van publieke belangen. Hun interfaces, reputatiesystemen, en algoritmes waarmee ze vraag en aanbod koppelen sturen de inrichting van de samenleving. Met grote gevolgen voor publieke belangen, zoals de toegankelijkheid, veiligheid en betaalbaarheid van (openbaar) vervoer, de pluriformiteit in de journalistiek of de inrichting van het onderwijs. In dit boek verkennen de auteurs de werking van platformen in een drietal maatschappelijke domeinen. Met als inzet de vraag: hoe kunnen in de platformsamenleving publieke waarden worden geborgd?
