    Description: In those Slavic languages where the vocative inflectional case endings are used inconsistently, a statistically increased occurrence of vocative’s endings can be observed with nouns having a diminutive or hypocoristic semantics. Assuming that is the ‘affective charge’ of some specific nouns which enhances the probability of vocative case forms, the present paper has two aims: 1. to verify empirically in three Slavic languages (Serbian, Polish, Bulgarian) whether the vocative case is better preserved with nouns having a derogatory semantics (insults and bad words), 2. to establish which are the rules governing their use.

    Description: The volume contains Andrea Trovesi’s linguistic writings, hitherto scattered in various journals and miscellanies, all characterized by a pragmatic approach. The first part collects studies on Slavic vocative conducted from a comparative-historical perspective ranging from Proto-Slavic to modern Slavic languages. These focus in particular on categorical transformations of the vocative, its relics, so-called ‘new vocatives,’ and pragmatic values developed in the various Slavic languages. The second part of the volume is devoted to modal meanings of the imperfect in a Slavic-Romance contrastive framework. The research privileges Bulgarian, but does not neglect the other Slavic languages of which it analyzes interesting residual peripheral aspects of such linguistic usage. Both lines of research presented here stand out for their originality and theoretical value considered from a point of view that leads from Slavic linguistics to the broader perspective of linguistics as a science of language.

    Description: Besides its temporal semantics, the imperfect tense can express a wide range of modal meanings, which occur most typically in spoken varieties of language. The paper contrastively explores the modal uses of the imperfect tense in Italian and Bulgarian, a Romance and Slavic language respectively, and shows to what extent they are similar or diverge in the two languages. Although the basic notional configuration of the imperfect tense in Italian and Bulgarian seems to be exactly the same, occurrences of modal meanings are less frequent in Bulgarian than in Italian. Possible explanatory hypotheses suggest that the peculiarities of the tense system (dedicated future-in-the-past form; specific narrative mood), as well as the different syntactic rules governing the sequence of tenses in related sentences, put major constraints on the development of modal meanings of the imperfect tense in Bulgarian.

    Description: Este trabalho analisa as teorias científicas que procuram explicar a aquisição e o desenvolvimento da linguagem e do pensamento sob a perspectiva genética. Essa análise é feita a partir dos debates entre seus expoentes mais ilustres, como Vygotsky, Wallon, Chomsky e Piaget, e dos pontos de convergência e divergência entre eles. Apesar das diferenças, há entre esses pensadores um propósito comum: fundamentar o estudo psicológico daquelas funções sobre bases científicas e genéticas e superar as concepções idealistas e materialistas mecanicistas. Desse modo, Dongo-Montoya retoma o tema da origem do pensamento da linguagem, com o debate entre Vygotsky e Piaget, cujas ideias estiveram presentes nas discussões do século XX. Na sequência, confronta as posições de Wallon e Piaget e de Piaget e Chomsky. Por fim, o autor dedica-se a evidenciar o pensamento mais atual e acabado de Piaget sobre o tema e a apresentar as consequências do desenvolvimento desses debates e dessas teorias sobre pensamento e linguagem para as questões educacionais e pedagógicas atuais.

The approach of the work is essentially historical and the organization of the subject traditional: in the first part, after providing a brief genealogical framework of Sardinian and discussing the linguistic Romanization of the island, there is a section on historical phonetics that aims to account for the elements that, from this perspective, mainly contribute to the dialectal fragmentation of the Sardinian-speaking domain; this is followed by more essential hints on morphology. The second part of the work deals with the (external) history of the language, following the model made canonical by Max Leopold Wagner: it starts from the pre-Latin substratum and goes all the way to linguistic Italianization in relatively recent times, leaving room as well for sociolinguistic considerations.

L’impostazione del lavoro è di tipo essenzialmente storico e l’organizzazione della materia tradizionale: nella prima parte, dopo aver fornito un breve inquadramento genealogico del sardo e aver discusso della romanizzazione linguistica dell’isola, si ha una sezione di fonetica storica che mira a dar conto degli elementi che, da questa prospettiva, concorrono principalmente alla frammentazione dialettale del dominio sardoromanzo; seguono cenni più essenziali di morfologia. Nella seconda parte dell’opera si affronta la storia (esterna) della lingua, seguendo il modello reso canonico da Max Leopold Wagner: si parte dal sostrato prelatino e si arriva sino all’italianizzazione linguistica in tempi relativamente recenti, lasciando spazio pure a considerazioni di carattere sociolinguistico.

    Description: In light of the dramatic events which have been shocking Ukraine since November 2013, this work’s itinerary aims at functioning as a basis for the formulation of new contact points, for a dialogue between traditions and cultures which nowadays are again being shaken by the events of history. The author examines the self-identification paths of the literary phenomenon of Russian language in Ukraine. With the help of interviews with important representatives of the Ukrainian Russian-speaking literary scene, made on the eve of the so-called 'Ukrainian crisis', the author shall closely observe the origins of the marginal nature of these 'post-Soviet hybrid narratives'.

    Description: Ancient linguistic reflection in India was able to combine the analysis of Sanskrit with the awareness that the language through which this analysis is conducted (Sanskrit) is different from the object it examines. Although this language-tool finds its dimension in the artificial Sanskrit of the sütras - the aphorisms of Påñini's grammar - metalinguistic discourse is not restricted to specialized discourse: common speech abounds in metalinguistic notations. The present work focuses on the testimonies of the grammatical school of Pâininian origin, by trying to retrace the course by which metalanguage left the field of naive linguistics to become an object of the school.

    Description: War is an event, theme, topos that induces fiction more than any other – stimulating, one might say, superego-like instances of historical fidelity – to press on its own boundaries, inhibit the space of the invention and merge with non-fictional forms of writing (memorial, diary, reportage ...). But in what way and to what extent its literary (as well as theatrical, cinematographical, comic book...) representation has changed – in terms of tone and strategies, in the degree of deformation of the known and shared reality – in the space of a Century that has seen the transformation of war strategies, media coverage and consequently the collective imagination linked to conflicts? The volume, conceived and edited by Nicola Turi, while tracing the individual path of known and lesser-known authors, in relation to the main theme of the book, both Italian and not (from Leopardi to Zanzotto, from Gadda to Calvino, from Salsa to Dessí, from Luzi and Fenoglio to Leavitt, Eisner and Celestini), also stimulates and elaborates a profound reflection on the bewilderment and natural attraction of the artistic gesture (from time to time in the name of fierce irony, desperate incredulity, the elegiac testimony) for evil, pain, the martial distortion of the human, social and political context.

    Description: Karel Teige was one of the leading theorists of the Czech avant-garde, and his activity is bound up with the most enriching cultural contributions made to the Czech Republic in the first half of the twentieth century. Proclaiming himself a Marxist, he was frequently at odds with Czech liberal-pragmatic thought. The emergence of European totalitarianism coincided with a major turning-point in his life when, towards the end of the 1930s, he had to come to terms with the Nazi invasion of his country and with the local version of Stalinism. After the War he was marginalised from cultural life and he died of a heart attack while being persecuted in a ferocious campaign of defamation by the Communist Party. The book offers a portrait of this protagonist of European culture and of the process of rediscovery that in the 1960s reintegrated his work and his thought into the extraordinary cultural revival that blossomed in the Prague Spring of 1968.

Relevant contributions are proposed on famous political figures (Teseo, Solone, Pericle and Cimone); on the great Athenian philosophers (in particular Socrates, the tradition of the Platonic Academy and of the Peripate); on the astrologer Metone and Epimenide, the purifier of Athens; but also on famous women (in particular, Aspasia).     Description: This research offers an integral analysis of the aesthetic thought of the director, playwright and art theorist Nikolaj Nikolaevic Evreinov. The work focuses on the analysis of the treaty The revelation of art, written in Paris in the 1930s, which represents the greatest testimony of the author's research in the aesthetic field. Henceforth, a connection is offered between the known aspects of Evreinov's theatrical thought, relating to the period of the avant-garde in Russia, and others, of a broader nature, which have long been precluded from being known. Through insights on the Russian theatrical history of the early 20th century, reflections touching textual criticism, the history of aesthetic thought and Russian criticism, the complex figure of an artist emerges against the background of the culture expressed by post-revolutionary Russian emigration. An artist who, as an intellectual, begins a dialogue with the Western European cultural tradition. This book thus intends to restore the visibility, as well as an exegetical and historiographic completeness, of Evreinov’s rich legacy as a writer, a philosopher and a critic.

    Description: Vasyl’ Stus's (1938-1985) poetry is one of the richest and most complex chapters in the literary history of late Soviet Ukraine. His poems are not only born of the author’s talent, but also of his erudition and deep cultural awareness; Stus’s poetry eloquently shows the presence of a significant Modernist trend in the literature of the Ukrainian underground during the Age of Economic stagnation. Stus's Modernism is the ideal evolution of the Ukrainian poetic culture of the first decades of the century, and develops thanks to an intense intertextual dialogue with the European literature. Stus’s reception of Russian and German poetry, in addition to becoming the model for nineteenth-century and early-twentieth-century Ukrainian poetry, proves fundamental to fully understand his work’s literary palimpsest, which this volume offers a comprehensive reading of, from the early stages to the maturity’s collections.

    Description: This volume contains Italian contributions to the XV Slavists’ International Congress (Minsk, 20-27 August 2013). In the wake of the best Italian Slavic tradition, the lecturers present a wide range of themes in different languages, ranging from the Cyril-Methodian question to the critical reflection on contemporary authors. Despite the diversity of disciplinary and methodological approaches - from paleography to textual analysis, from literary comparative studies to sociolinguistics - these contributions show that Italian Slavistic studies maintains their roots, critically developing previous studies and opening up new perspectives for research, while a new generation of scholars is born. As in the past, Italian studies on Slavistics are playing a significant role not only in Italy's cultural relations with the Slavic countries, but more generally on the perspective of a vast and complex process of integration of the various European cultures, which goes further beyond the borders of the European Union; a process in which the Slavic world, with its variety of languages and cultures, is one of the main actors.

    Description: From the 1920s onwards, the Soviet Union became a favourite destination for Italian writers, travellers who took it upon themselves to interpret and present the new Soviet world to Italian readers by sending articles to newspapers and magazines, most of which were later published as monographs. The present study aims to investigate the reasons that drove so many intellectuals to visit Russia and the Soviet territories after the October. Through references to historical and political ideologies that may have influenced the writers’ interpretations, the reconstruction of travel conditions and individual approaches to Soviet life, the study focuses on Italian intellectuals’ views on the USSR and the particular value that the reportages had in the construction of the image of the Soviet world in the Italian reality.

    Description: This study deals with the first works by Don DeLillo, from Americana (1971) to Running Dog (1978), but it also extends its investigation horizon to his following works. The work deals specifically with the conception of time, and the way it is represented in the texts of the American author. By integrating the philosophy of time with narratology, the volume offers critical reflections aimed at identifying the type of poetics through which DeLillo articulates time in his work. In particular, the centrality of the perception of time in his novels and, more specifically, the concentration of the plots in certain moments, the oblique presence of the influence of Samuel Beckett's work in the representation of duration and the attention of the author to the double temporality of the cinematographic image and its hidden aesthetic potential are highlighted. Therefore, time becomes the conceptual context in which the textures of these texts, and the themes characterising them, find a resolution. In the representation of time, in the microscopic analysis and in the slow motion of some specific time segments, DeLillo's narrative traces the possibilities of an indefinable and mysterious perception of reality and history.

    Description: This work outlines the phenomenon of conversions to Catholicism which took place in Florence between the 17th and 18th century, and starts by reconstructing the history of the House of Catechumens. In the second half of the 17th century, thanks to a noblewoman from Florence’s bequest, the Institute offered hospitality to "infidels" of all origins, and the number of conversions increased considerably. Such liberality ended up causing a serious economic crisis, which the Lorraine Grand Dukes tried to solve in the 18th century by restricting the field of action to Tuscan subjects only. However, there was no lack of abuse and interference by clergymen, especially towards Jews.

    Description: This book on Slavic matriarchy is the result of the studies and researches that Evel Gasparini carried out over the span of his lifetime. Intrigued by the possibility of a close link between the collective ownership of the land and the ancient agricultural-matriarchal substrate of Slav culture, Gasparini launched on the titanic enterprise of analysing the archaeological and historical sources of early Slavic civilisation. Basing himself on a concept of culture elaborated in the ethnological field, he brought to light certain contradictions in the application of the Indo-European paradigm to Slavic culture and identified a series of elements illustrating the matriarchal substrate. Exploiting an uncommon knowledge of cultural anthropology and profound linguistic competencies, in this book Gasparini maps out a complex panorama ranging from the economy to the social structure and from the religious traditions to music and dance. Out of print for some time, the book is now proposed in a new, more convenient form, complete with an appendix on Finns and Slavs – which was originally intended as another chapter in the book but was then left out – a detailed preface by Gasparini's disciple Remo Faccani, and a bibliography of the scholar's oeuvre edited by Donatella Possamai.

    Description: With the additional help of archival material, the first part of this volume reconstructs the history of the Institute for Eastern Europe (Ipeo), founded in Rome in 1921, whose activity was characterized by a remarkable editorial production closely connected to the birth and development of Italian Slavic Studies. Despite the inevitable coexistence with fascism and the submission, somehow, to a line of conduct which especially in the 1930s accompanied the regime’s policy, the Ipeo’s activity was marked above all by a sincere desire to spread knowledge of a world which was still quite unknown in the Italian context under many aspects. The Ipeo operated until the end of World War II, when the government funding and even the political and cultural assumptions which had favoured its birth ceased because of the changed geopolitical context, determined by the end of the conflict. The second part of the volume covers the General alphabetical catalogue of all Ipeo’s publications, accompanied by a Chronological catalogue and by an Index of authors, editors, translators and preface writers.

    Description: Ivan Aksenov is one of the most neglected figures of early 20th Century Russian literature. The few scholars who have noticed his great originality interpret his verses above all as an application of the principles of Cubist painting in poetry, in the light of the experiences of Mayakovsky &Co.; these investigations denote a poor knowledge of the author, who did not fail to declare the incompatibility between the two artistic media. This book is therefore the first systematic study of Aksenov's poetry, starting from a reflection on the philological state of the texts, to move on to the reconstruction of his aesthetic thought and to integral analyzes of poetic compositions. An unprecedented theory of art emerges from this - which develops ideas of Tolstoy, Vjaceslav Ivanov and Freud - and a production in verses characterized by daring metric innovations and a flow-of-consciousness poetics of the with a subtly humorous urbanism that recalls authors such as Apollinaire and Cendrars. It is thus intended to highlight the peculiarity of Aksenov, the only Russian poet from the Futurist area to have participated, even for a few months, in the cultural life of Paris in the 1910s and an advocate at home of themes and stylistic elements partly related to the French esprit nouveau.

    Description: The concept of the literary canon is one of the most debated and controversial in the western intellectual tradition. This book offers ten contributions by Italian scholars of Anglo-American culture addressing the way in which the concept of the literary canon holds out against areas traditionally considered as external or extraneous to it. The essays range over different topics: the etymological analysis of the term "canon"; the relations between canon and performativity; paraliterature – a universe populated by non-hierarchic genres; the relations between post-colonial literature and the canon; postmodern biofiction; studies on translation and finally gay and lesbian literature. The book ends with a meditation on the innovations wrought on the Anglo-American canon by the virtual world of Internet and with a reading proposal originating from a different area of literary studies. Taken as a whole, the intention of the book is to pave the way to democratisation and pluralism in literary studies, going beyond the limitations set by the traditional scale of values of the "western canon". It proposes a frequentation of the geographical and cultural borderlines and hence of the areas of resistance that such borderlines pose to the dominant conceptual hierarchies within and around us, enabling us to glimpse an original future for literature and for western culture in a broader sense.

    Description: From March 16-19, 2016, the Young Romance Studies Forum on "Center and Periphery" took place at the Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg. In this volume, the dialectical concepts of center and periphery are examined from the perspectives of literary, linguistic, and cultural studies. Their relevance in Romania is examined in the individual contributions on the basis of geographical, spatial, historical, social, and linguistic aspects, in order to include different approaches and methods of analysis. In addition to a heterogeneous approach to the dimensions of the conceptual pair, the volume offers a structured presentation of the individual phenomena studied. The work investigates the elective affinities between liquid substance, poetic word and music in the romantic period. The rereading highlights the large number of "liquid-aquatic" metaphors in Franz Schubert's lieder works, with particular attention to the cycles Die Schöne Müllerin (1823) and Winterreise (1828).     Description: The volume presents the edition of a copy of an anonymous Russian manuscript spelling book probably written by the famous scholar Yevfimiy Cudovsky, or by personalities close to him from the Muscovite background of the Philhellenes, in the 1680s. This spelling book represents a significant evidence of the level reached, on the eve of the great reforms introduced by Peter, by the Russian didactic literature intended for elementary education, heir to the tradition established by Ivan Fyodorov with the manual printed in Lviv in 1574. The edition is accompanied by a preface and a commentary that locates the spelling book in the Russian historical-cultural and literary context of the second half of the 17th century, particularly in relation to other books of this kind and grammar manuals circulating at the time.

    Description: The Greek koinè shows a double development in the crystallised Greek language (intended for literary, administrative and ecclesiastical uses) and the language of everyday use subject to innovations that would lead to the birth neo-Greek, which was never the official language for written documents. This situation determined the almost absolute lack of documents that allow us to reconstruct the evolution of the Greek language from the late age to the early Middle Ages. This work contributes to the reconstruction of this gap by analysing the Greek language of the the private letters written on papyrus, a documentary typology probably close to the spoken register. The analysis isolated four peculiar phenomena of the morphosyntactic evolution of the Greek (genitive-dative syncretism, disappearance of the infinitive, replacement of the perfect tense with equivalent periphrases and disposition of the clitics), offering a renewed picture.

    Description: Leo Tolstoy's works are not only masterpieces of world literature, but also mirrors of their time, of the socio-cultural transformations which took place in Tsarist Russia; it is from this perspective that, in this work, this great writer’s production is analysed. In particular, the author examines the evolution of the institution of marriage in the second half of the 19th century in Russia, starting from the reading of Family Happiness , Anna Karenina and The Kreutzer Sonata. If Family happiness preludes to the crisis of the arranged marriage, its implosion is beautifully described in Anna Karenina . Anna announces the definitive death of this institution when she defies the society of her time by not hiding her adultery and, on the contrary, by exhibiting it and trying to legitimize it.The Kreutzer Sonata, lastly, demonstrates the successful overcoming of the aristocratic marriage model, replaced by the bourgeois one.

The essays are equally divided between Aeschylus and Sophocles, and touch on all the major questions which the study of papyrology has raised for the philological and literary research on the two great tragedy writers. Both for the prestige of the authors and for the variety of the topics addressed, the volume offers an interesting and authoritative picture of the 'state of the art' of the studies in this regard, in light of the interrelationships between papyrology and Greek literature.

    Description: Gerasim Zelic (1752-1828) is one of the most emblematic figures of the Serbian cultural scene between the 18th and 19th century. He as an archimandrite of the Serbian Orthodox monastery of Krupa, a diplomat and a writer. From 1794 to 1811, Zelic held the position of Vicar-General of the Serbs in Dalmatia and, as such, was one of the main actors of the events related to the confessional controversy that stirred the region at the time. His autobiography, entitled Žitije and published in Budapest in 1823, also places him among the protagonists of a crucial period for the birth of the new Serbian literature. Following a multidisciplinary approach, the essays collected in the volume Gerasim Zelic e il suo tempo analyse Gerasim Zelic’s story, his involvement in the events related to the confessional controversy in Dalmatia and his literary activity, bringing the discussion to the era in which the Serbian archimandrite lived. Particular attention is paid to the context in which Zelic worked, namely the Balkan peninsula, as well as to the cultural history of the Serbs of Hungary between the 18th and 19th century.

    Description: This volume aims at investigating the reasons why, in Turkey, individual memory and construction of subjectivity (both intended in the broad sense) go beyond the boundaries of the individual in order to incorporate matters concerning national identity. Starting from Jakobson’s definition of poeticalness, the volume studies the mechanisms by which connectors, such as linguistic signs assigned to the connection between parts of speech, contribute to the poeticalness in a text, which is here intended as a textual peculiarity capable of activating the interpreter in the tout court language, but mainly in the literary text. The first two chapters of this volume offer an overview of the theoretical and methodological foundations that justify the choice to acquire the connectors as possible indicators of poeticalness, and also a preparatory introduction to the third chapter, where there is the description of the results from a study on the syntax and semantics of the connector in in a collection of German poetry texts from the first half of the 20th century.

    Description: This book outlines a short profile of Italy’s linguistic history, and discusses some current problems related to globalization, the values of the mother tongue and multilingualism, and the need to re-found the Italian and European linguistic policy on a new basis. Contemporary Italian is a particularly stratified cultural asset in which, alongside the many new elements, one can grasp the clear and precious signs of a very strong connection with the past. Today, in the European scene, Italy indeed stands out for its accentuated multilingualism and the long duration of its national language. On the one hand, the extraordinary animal and plant biodiversity in the country corresponds to an extraordinary cultural and linguistic diversity; on the other, the Italians feel that the language used by Dante, Petrarca and Boccaccio still belongs to them, and has fundamental traits coinciding with their own. Such richness is particularly appreciated abroad (as evidenced by the growing demand for Italian speakers in the world) and deserves to be better acknowledged by the younger generations. It also deserves to be protected and valued with appropriate tools, starting with a decisive rethinking of the country’s linguistic policy.

    Description: Maximus the Greek (c.1470-1556), born Michael Trivolis, is a complex figure. As a copyist and Dominican novice, Orthodox monk and humanist, he stands at the crossroads of different worlds, cultures and creeds. His life path unwound between his besieged homeland, humanist Italy – in the Republics of Florence and Venice and in the Papal States – Mount Athos and the Moscow of Vasili III and Ivan IV. This path brought him exceptionally into contact with both Latin and vernacular humanism and Latin Christianity, with the Greek and Slavic Byzantine tradition, with Orthodoxy and Islam, in a cultural, linguistic and religious polyphony that is at once his hallmark and the key to his literary legacy. The subject of this book is Maximus the Greek’s testimony regarding the Western religious orders contained in the Terrible and Memorable Narration, and the Perfect Form of Monastic Life and the Letter on the Franciscans and the Dominicans. The comparison with documentary evidence, made here for the first time, demonstrates the reliability of these works, casting light on the author’s life and the sources, places and people involved in it.

Adopting an approach that, on the one hand takes into consideration the methods recently applied to the study of Western and Byzantine mediaeval homiletics, and on the other recent studies addressing the rhetorical form and the use of citations, the author investigates the function of the Biblical and liturgical citations in the texts of the Slavic-Oriental homiletic tradition, proposing an interpretation in a key that is not merely rhetorical but also linked to pragmatic linguistics.

    Description: The subject of this work is the morphosyntactic analysis of a corpus of Latin documentary papers which were written in the centre and the north of the Italian peninsula between the 7th and the 8th century. The study focuses on the competition, in the nominal phrase, between synthetic and analytical encoding of the dependent name, which is the result of the grammaticalization process of the phrase starting by the preposition “de”, which in the Romance phase replaced the genitive case. This change is interpreted on a semantic basis, making use of the functional domain of possession. The volume also analyses nominal morphology which, although characterized by polymorphism and inconsistency, manifests phenomena such as the levelling of random oppositions and the reconstruction of inflectional paradigms, two inverse processes which find their cause in the principle of animacy.

    Description: What is the common aspect linking the studies of this volume, which take into account very different authors such as Conte, Palazzeschi, Zanzotto, Caproni, Rosselli, Biagini, some crespuscolar poets, Leopardi, Annovi, Giuliani, and even some twentieth-century translations of R.M. Rilke? They share the belief that the poetic word - which etymologically has “creative” powers - generates cognitive perspectives altering our perception of the world. Reading poetry does not have an effect confined to the page and to the moment, but affects our relationship with reality, changes it and enriches it in an often unsuspected and surprising way. In this collection, the authors try to bring out a sort of epistemology of poetry, in order to clarify how it can contribute to illuminating our experience of the world and of ourselves. The reader is then invited to look beyond the boundaries traditionally established by the various disciplines, in the direction of mutual contamination and openness to innovative and unprecedented suggestions.

    Description: Girolamo Bartolommei’s literary research is characterised by the narration of actions carried out by sacred and profane subjects and by the narration of ancient fabulae, re-interpreted according to the principle of moral utility. Girolamo Bartolommei dealt with different forms of lyrical, epic, dramaturgical and musical writing, recalling 'the benign readers' of his works to the ethical and social function of poetry. His work Didascalia cioè dottrina comica (“Caption, that is comic doctrine” printed in Florence in 1658 and reprinted in 1661), of which the critical edition is here introduced, is of particular interest for the peculiarity of the theoretical proposal. Such proposal is ascribable to the aesthetic of the academy theatre, aimed at demonstrating to young writers that only the 'honesty' and the decorum of a 'well-ordered comedy' could lift the fate of comic art from the degradation in which it had fallen. The author tries to convey this idea by proceeding from questions of general poetics up to the 'sketches of middle comedies' he composed himself.

    Description: Starting with the great authors of the past, autobiographical requests have been a distinctive feature of Scandinavian literatures. Today, after the modernist experiments of ego building, there is the affirmation of narrative and poetic works which question the boundary between autobiographical truth and fiction, further stimulating the lively, innovative and articulated debate on autobiography in Northern Europe, which has been in development since the 1980s. The 24 authors of the volume (Italian and Scandinavian scholars who are active in Italy or abroad, Scandinavian researchers and writers interested in Italy) illustrate the plurality and uses of autobiographical texts from the 16th century to current days, illuminate areas of a vast territory, investigate little studied texts or go back to questioning the classics.

    Description: The Italian contributions to the XIII International Congress of Slavists (Ljubljana, 15-21 August 2003) had a very limited circulation between the participants in the congress and the restricted circle of experts. Considering the high scientific value of the individual contributions, to which we continue to refer in the framework of Slavic literature, it was decided to publish these acts in the series "Library of Slavic Studies" also to celebrate the ten years of its existence. Faced with a consolidated tradition of studies in the philological and literary field, Italian Slavistics of the beginning of the millennium found itself facing new needs. On the one hand, a new generation of linguists has established themselves, who have developed a series of innovative research on Slavic languages, especially in the contrastive field. On the other hand, new research paths have developed in contemporary literature, especially in relation to the most recent historical circumstances which have seen profound cultural transformations in the Slavic countries themselves, with the need to reconstruct consolidated literary canons also on the basis of the literature of emigration. The same philological research has been able to question itself again on its role by taking up in a different form traditional issues such as the Cyril-Methodian question, the problem of biblical citations or the debate on the Latin Slavia and the Orthodox Slavia, as well as the more traditional ecdotic issues manifesting a new sensitivity starting from religious issues.     Description: As a sign, tangible heritage is the most visible trace of the past in our daily life. In constant dialectic with the intangible heritage, it constitutes a physical presence that forces us to take concrete awareness. Knowledge of texts and stories, which for Vitruvius is the high road for the design and construction of a building, is also fundamental in the processes of deconstruction, according to the various stages and different perceptions, through ages and customs, up to retrace the process that transformed it into 'heritage'. The lexicon and the terminology of cultural heritage are in this sense the most important vector of knowledge, enhancement and dissemination. The volume seeks to bring together those who study the language of heritage, from different countries and through different methodologies, and those involved in its management, in order to offer points of view and ideas on the narration and perception of tangible and intangible heritage, in mediation across eras, cultures and identities.

    Description: This book was born from an observation and a desire. The starting point is that the multilingual nature of Andrea Zanzotto's poetry becomes almost invisible by virtue of being evident in the eyes of its readers. The babelic hypersensitivity of the petèl’s poet is certainly not absent in critical studies, yet this work addresses it in a systematic way for the first time, by investigating on the multiple connections between poetic writing and languages. The desire that accompanied this reflection was to lead it with a "prismatic" gaze, crossing the poetry's multilingualism and the poet’s translation practice, and summoning the many voices of its translators around the Zanzottian multivocality. A series of unpublished documents in the appendix, and the interventions of poets like Cecchinel, Demarcq and Rueff, alongside those of the best European experts of Zanzotto, add a special significance to this work. Speech given on June 26, 2007 at the Locanda da Lino in Solighetto (TV, Italy) on the occasion of the presentation of the book by F. Carbognin, L’«altro spazio».     Description: The commentary of Lettere e rime which Chiara Matraini (1515-1604) published in Venice with the editor Moretti in 1597, when she was 82, intends to provide an organic analysis of the composition, of the relationship between the genres, of the modalities of the “imitatio” and of the philosophical, social and cultural substrate acting as a background in her last chansonnier. The study also focuses on her stylistic changes over a period of forty years (1555-1597), from the adherence to Petrarch and Bembo’s canon to the end-of-the-century Mannerism, as well as on the counter-reformist twist characterizing a parallel writing of philosophical and devotional nature, which can be seen here between the lines. The investigation also takes the liber of Lettere e rime as a deliberately organic and structured whole in the meeting between the letters and the poems. By virtue of its ‘marginality’ as well, this shows a complex work, emerging together with the many afterthoughts which animated the long, almost century-long, life of the author from Lucca.

    Description: The twenty-three essays of this volume represent the contributions of the Italian delegation to the 16th International Congress of Slavic Studies, which took place in Belgrade in August 2018. The essays, written in Italian, English, Russian and Serbian, are divided into three sections: linguistics, philology and Slavic literatures. Just as the range of the touched topics is very wide, so is their time span, going from the prehistoric and protohistoric eras to the present day. The covered topics extend from the Proto-Slavic language to the writing, linguistic and literary traditions of the Slavic ecclesiastical civilization, from the linguistic and cultural relations between Italy and Russia to a particular 18th-century Illyrian dictionary. In the field of synchronic linguistics, the essays include: a study of dialectology and sociolinguistics in the borderland between Ukraine and Belarus; the ways to express the concept of completeness in Russian; the study of some concessive constructs of the Russian language using the methods of “constructionist grammar”, a particular aspect of the Russian and Bulgarian verbal systems; and finally, the different suffixes used in the formation of the aspectual pairs in the Resian dialect. In the literary field, the essays topics range from Gumilev and Chlebnikov to literature and ecology; from Armenian writers who write in Russian to the neo-Latin poem “The bison’s song” and to the humanistic and Renaissance reflections in modern Ukrainian literature; from an Italian scholar of Serbian literature in the first half of the 20th century to the image of the “strong woman” in the Serbian literature of the same time. Therefore, thanks to their variety, these essays offer a very concrete idea of the several existing currents within the research in Slavic Studies in Italy.

    Description: Psychoanalysis spread earlier and faster in Russia than in Western Europe. According to the author, there are three main reasons for this. First, psychoanalysis is based on the fictional structure of patients’s narratives. In a literary-centric country such as Russia, the ‘literary character’ of psychoanalysis quickly attracts the Russian intelligentsia. Secondly, the formal similarities between literary and psychoanalytic language, and the close connection between the poetic word and the rhetoric of the unconscious, contribute to rendering Freudian language particularly familiar in Russia. Thirdly, the Silver Age, with its attention to the symbol, the ‘other’, and the double, contributes to increasing interest in the theory of the unconscious. This will continue until after the October Revolution as the state relies on psychoanalysis to help forge the new Soviet citizen. This ‘alliance’, however, is short-lived, and Freudian psychoanalytic theory will be ostracized from the 1930s up to the end of the Soviet regime.

    Description: The present dissertation is concerned with the KIN oracle, a symbolic divination technique produced by the Hittite in the 2nd mill. B.C. and developed only in the Hittite cultural milieu. Like other omens of the Ancient Near East, the Hittite oracles were considered to be messages from the gods. The Hittite solicited omens included Extispicy, Augury, the Bed Oracle, the ḪURRI-Bird Oracle, the Snake Oracle, and the KIN Oracle. Although many studies have already explained how the different divination systems worked, the KIN oracle frame still remains difficult to understand in all of its features. In this research the KIN cuneiform sources and its oracular structure have been analyzed in all respects and enriched with tables, patterns, and pictures in order to better understand the work carried out. As far as the KIN is concerned, this research provides several different analytic implications both for Hittite and divination studies.

    Description: The overbearing affirmation of the body, with its instincts and impulses, and an effort aimed at suppressing that same push: this powerful dialectic deeply marks Beckett's works, and becomes a crucial reflection of the more general tension between a vain waiting for the end and the need to move forward. The close investigation of the texts suggests a special link with the thought of Arthur Schopenhauer, revealing in particular the contiguity between the concept of Noluntas and the search, by many of Beckett's characters, for “will-lessness”, a peculiar state of quiet and abstraction from reality. Starting from these observations, this study investigates the theme of the body within Beckett's poetics, especially in light of his relationship with the Schopenhauer's Will theory.

    Description: Against the background of the cities of Lecce, Parma and Florence (Macrì’s well-known “Dimore vitali”), between the 1940s and the 1970s, an almost forgotten author (poet, translator from French, writer) and his “teacher” stand out among the fiercest critics of the twentieth century. There are many stories intertwining in the 142 epistolary pieces collected in this volume, carefully transcribed and annotated by Dario Collini. Personal stories (particularly letters are entrusted with the unprecedented and intriguing portrait of a multifaceted, complex, elusive Pagan) and collective stories, such as those told by «Libera Voce» and «Critone», which count among the cultural initiatives that helped bring the peripheral reality of Salento closer to the major literary centres of the peninsula. Along a wide chronological span, the story of a deep friendship is also revealed, which did not claim to erase the distance between the two correspondents, but which would continue over time nevertheless, nourished by “gratitude”, “esteem” and “trust”.

In fact what pervades them all is his love of the book, seen on the one hand as an unrepeatable and magnificent object produced by individual genius and the cultural legacy, and on the other as a medium of knowledge, an intellectual and spiritual bond. The book beloved of Mazzitelli is that of the rich and variegated Slav cultural tradition. It is the Russian book first and foremost, but not only, and not in the abstract dimension of the erudite bibliographic citation, but in the lively, shifting and at times perishable dimension of the library, seen as a living site of encounter and study. The life of the Slav book in Italy depends upon its full accessibility and its complete valorisation. The studies in this volume represent a crucial passage towards the full realisation of this goal.

    Description: Retracing Dessí’s collaboration in the magazines “L’Orto”, “Primato” and “Cronache” directed by Giorgio Vecchietti, among stories, essays and reviews that have remained largely unpublished, means deepening the writer’s artistic development by exploring into the creative laboratory of his debut. The 36 texts collected and commented by Francesca Bartolini allow us to analyse the thematic and stylistic approaches that were further developed and deepened in the subsequent production. At the same time they take into account the years of the fascist dictatorship, allowing us to investigate the development of an intellectual conscience engaged in an anti-fascist, rebel movement typical of many writers of that generation. Weaving the critical discourse with the reading of the correspondence, the complex relationship that linked Dessí to the three editorial offices is noted, testifying to the passion of a young artist eager to follow his inclination, but also aware of the difficulty of preserving his freedom and identity in the limitations of the regime.

    Description: Literary trompe-l'oeil intends to emancipate the enigmatic and distinctive figure of Hauff from his long and unjust marginalization resulting from a now outdated current of criticism, to offer a new interpretation of his Märchen for a general rereading of this modern literary caricaturist's works. On approaching his texts, one cannot but notice how they are imbued with continual and insistent, bewitching, caustic and alienating allusions, just like the Mona Lisa's smile. With a constant critical scepticism and a subtle illusionist skill, this demythologized 'budding Satan' looks at the present situation through the 'diabolic lenses' of irony, making his works a sort of literary Befreiungskrieg, in which he lays claim to a heterotopic space of free fantastic-humorist expression, along the undulating route leading from Sterne to Heine via Jean Paul.

    Description: Soviet society has always been characterised by a marked institutional censorship which, in the face of the power of the written word, has set in motion a series of highly repressive institutions. However, censorship does not necessarily exert its power through forms of coercion; there are also approaches that are implemented through a complex network of cultural institutions that can "produce" society, expunging concepts and attitudes that are a threat to the system and at the same time masterminding a series of organisms designed to forge orthodox behaviour and mindframes, to the extent that the role of the external censor often becomes almost superfluous, being replaced by the "censor of the soul". This book seeks to bring to the fore this second type of censorship, albeit without neglecting the complex repressive machinery set in motion by Soviet power.     Description: According to Sartori, “Language is the sine-qua-non instrument of knowing”. Nevertheless, social sciences often adopt terms lacking clear and precise definitions. Adopting the method proposed in Sartori (1984), the present Master’s thesis consists of an explicatory study aiming to clarify the concept of “elites”. First, the essential works concerning elites are identified by analyzing a large citation network. Then, the thesis proposes a definition of elite able to encompass those of previous works. The new definition attempts to include the concept of elites within the broader framework of the resource-dependence theories (Pfeffer e Salancik, 1978) and purposive theories (Coleman, 2005).

    Description: Through the analysis of the predetermined verbal forms of the Povest 'vremennych let (11th-12th centuries), this book sheds light on the aspectual meanings of verbs with prefix, in order to verify the degree of evolution of the Slavic-oriental aspectual system in the most ancient phase of its attestation. The study on prefixes and the ways in which they interact with the actional characteristics of the starting verbs allows us to identify the consequences of prefixing at the lexical, actional and aspectual level. Terminative verbs with prefix acquire the resultative value ("protoperfective") and are subjected, in part, to secondary suffixation, a phenomenon that will contribute to the grammaticalization of the aspectual category in Russian and other Slavic languages.

    Description: The book comprises studies of twenty-four texts of Slavic-ecclesiastical production composed to recount the lives and celebrate the memory of eleven saints of the Russian Orthodox church who lived between the tenth and the seventeenth centuries: Ol'ga of Kiev (†969), Evfrosinija of Polock (†1173), Fevronija of Murom (†1228), Evfrosinija of Suzdal' (†1250), Anna of Kašin (XIII-XIV sec.), Sof'ja of Tver (XIII-XIV sec.), Vassa of Nižnij Novgorod (†1378), Julianija of Vjaz'ma (†1406), Evdokija of Moscow (†1407), Sof'ja of Suzdal' (†1542) and Julianija of Lazar'evo (†1604). Leaving to the historians the task of establishing the reliability of the hagiographic accounts handed down by the sources, the author intends to highlight the cultural influence of the texts in question. The analysis of the stylistic features, of the motifs and the bibliographical-liturgical citations contained in them, brings to light a characteristic profile of the female hagiography, identifying the image of the 'bride of Christ' as the model of sanctity for women. This interpretative key represents an initial approach to issues that have been addressed to date only in a superficial and sporadic manner as regards the East Slavic tradition, although they have begun to receive their due attention in the Latin and Byzantine sphere.

    Description: Elegantie lingue latine is the masterpiece of Lorenzo Valla's reflection on language, through which the humanist gave birth to a real re-foundation of Latin. To date we still do not have a modern, scientifically based edition of the text characterising the various editorial phases of the work, on which the author worked for over ten years and which, arbitrarily and by the author’s own will, was in circulation long before its official publication. This research is part of a future complete edition of the text: the first complete edition of a book of the “Elegantie” is presented, limited to the fifth book on the “disputatio verborum”, based on the examination, albeit partial, of the handwritten tradition and on a global reconsideration of the editorial history work.

    Description: L'olivonese è il dialetto lombardo alpino parlato nell'ultimo comune della valle di Blenio (canton Ticino, Svizzera). Si tratta di una varietà conservativa che, finora, non era mai stata descritta in modo approfondito. In questo saggio si ricostruisce l'evoluzione che il dialetto di Olivone ha avuto a partire dal latino volgare. Nella prima parte si descrivono i mutamenti fonetici che hanno contraddistinto il passaggio dal latino volgare alla varietà odierna. Nella seconda parte si definisce l'inventario fonematico dell'olivonese. Il lavoro si chiude con un'appendice in cui sono riportate immagini di fonetica sperimentale e con un indice delle forme olivonesi citate nel libro. Il saggio è rivolto sia a specialisti della materia (linguisti, dialettologi) sia a persone che desiderano conoscere più da vicino una varietà dialettale alpina.

For the critical analysis of these pieces, identified so far with a 'symptomatic' examination of various fictional texts on a given historical period or person, some possible non-canonical directions have been proposed: a 'horizontal' method, which brings biofiction into the 'fictional galaxy’ of a writing subject (as in the case of Michèle Roberts), and then a ‘vertical’ method, which explores a model-biofiction to deconstruct and then reconstruct the intertwining of the synchronic and diachronic voices of its singular modus operandi. The final part of the volume is dedicated to Mab's Daughters by Judith Chernaik, an extremely interesting case of biofiction 'with possible worlds'.     Description: Despite being recognised as an exponent of Slovenian culture, the polymath Johann Weichard Valvasor has to date been undervalued in terms of his direct contribution to the aesthetic and literary consciousness of his homeland. He has been considered above all as a source of material for the works of others, while studies of broader scope underlining his original contribution in the sphere of Carniolan narrative, albeit in German, are still lacking. The present study, based on an attentive reading of the four volumes that compose his principal work, Die Ehre dess Hertzogthums Crain, seeks to identify all the passages that can be considered narrative units, numbering them progressively, cataloguing them by type and providing a brief summary of each. The corpus thus obtained – recorded in the appendix – has been described and appraised. Finally, individual narrative units have been compared with stories or popular songs of analogous content. The work is concluded by an evaluation of Valvasor's narrative gifts, setting the writer in a new light within the cultural and literary history of Slovenia.

    Description: Starting from the main theories about the imaginary - from the Freudian category of Unheimliche and the Todorovian category of hésitation up to the most recent contributions - the volume highlights the imaginary elements of instability in Flann O'Brien's narrative. In particular, the author analyses the discontinuities and irreconcilable contradictions of the Irish writer's textual systems, the idiosyncratic and fragmented representation of the characters, the ambiguous coexistence of natural and supernatural, the problematic relationship between signifier and signified. Malapropisms, neologisms, linguistic tics, nonsense and a series of meta-narrative games seem to compromise the search for reliable answers within the Obrienian cosmos in which truth is, in fact, an odd number.

    Description: Jorge Eduardo Eielson (Lima 1924 - Milan 2006) and Mario Vargas Llosa (Arequipa, Peru, 1936; Winner of the Nobel prize in 2010) are certainly two 'exemplary Peruvians', as they have both started by digging into the history and social conflicts of their country, before opening up to global culture and reality with an interdisciplinary and intercultural spirit: Vargas Llosa did so using fiction, theatre, non-fiction and journalism; Eielson used poetry, the visual arts, non-fiction and journalism. The volume offers a rich itinerary starting from an interview with Vargas Llosa by José Miguel Oviedo (Florence, 2008), and then goes through individual aspects of the work by the two authors. It is then accompanied by photographic records and a DVD with an elaboration of Eielson's visual works, paintings and poems.

    Description: The long reign of Ivan Aleksandăr (1331-1371), the penultimate emperor of Bulgaria prior to the Turkish conquest, was marked by a series of successful military campaigns against Serbia and Byzantium and above all by an intensive cultural production, largely fostered and funded by the sovereign himself. The central decades of the fourteenth century were of crucial importance for the later cultural evolution of Bulgaria and the whole of Orthodox Slovenia, despite which to date ample and exhaustive studies on the figure of Ivan Aleksandăr are lacking. There is, in effect, a considerable amount of information at disposal, although it is scattered over the literary sources, the colophons of the manuscripts, the epigraphic documentation and also, obviously, the official deeds promulgated by the Emperor. Through the analysis of this varied documentation, this book attempts to reconstruct the figure of the sovereign, the context in which he lived and worked, his greatness and his mistakes and his parallel activities as a strategist and an illuminated patron of the arts. For the first time, the Italian reader can find collected and translated all the manuscript sources relating to the Bulgarian sovereign. The book is completed by an appendix with the original texts of the Slavonic-ecclesiastical tradition.

    Description: Just over 150 epistolary pieces, from the twentieth-century archives of Florence and Rome, are published for the first time thanks to Alberto Baldi’s careful transcription, which does not only allow the reconstruction of the story of a friendship born around the pages of newspapers and consolidated over time to involve the partners of the two writers (Gianna Manzini, Lina Baraldi and Luisa Babini), but also follows Giuseppe Dessí’s presence in one of the most widely read newspapers in Rome. The editorial correspondence, started early by Falqui, the “mover of culture” and through frequency peaks (from 1948 to 1958), soon turned into the advice of a sympathetic reader who, despite the political dissensions for the conservative line of the newspaper "Il Tempo", deserves the credit of having continued a collaboration which would nourish some of the writer’s most significant collections of short stories. The book ends with thirty-eight narrative texts by Dessí, scattered on the «third page» and never collected in a volume before.

    Description: The Proceedings of the 9th Conference of the International Society of Italian Linguistics and Philology (SILFI), «Prospects in the study of Italian vocabulary» (Florence, 14-17 June 2006), comprise 88 contributions by scholars from Italy and abroad. The essays are divided into twelve sections, each representing a study prospect, thus illustrating the vitality of the great tradition of Italian studies on language. The Conference confirms the importance of tradition, but also points up how the new areas of study – concerning the use of information infrastructures for the acquisition and conservation of the linguistic heritage – are by now pivotal both for research and for the establishment of essential resources for the defence and promotion of our language. Meditation on the Italian lexicon at this moment in time signifies retrieving the relation between our language and our culture, which tends to be overshadowed in a period of globalisation and of vehicular language such as the present.

    Description: The death of the self passes through modern culture. However, chooses for himself the role of Psychopomp in obeyance not only to stylistic but also to profoundly ethical reasons. Bassani interrupts his narrative writing to give unity to the Romanzo di Ferrara and to entrust poetry with verses in the form of an epitaph. The testimonial "need” seems to emerge, giving meaning through the Prologue to the Giardino dei Finzi-Contini and to what will come after. It seems that the coherent constructive geometry of an entire work (intertwined since the beginning with refined European readings, figurative and Longhiani memories that Anna Dolfi highlights with wise precision) fully reveals the excess of the hourglass shape, of the conical structures that allow to glimpse distant flakes of light, pushing the real on the perilitant discrimination of the shadow. There, where the existing (objects, characters / people) is offered as a painted image alive only thanks to refraction and indirect projection of the gaze. This book investigates the strategies of Bassani’s memory and his playing on revelation / concealment, while deeply analysing the compositional paths of the texts in their allocative ways (the very privilege, in poetry, of the dialogic and epistolary form). Moreover, the work strongly questions the places of the distance, the introjection of mourning, the relationship between history and truth, between the code of reality and the effect of reality, the convergences between biography and culture (in the names of Caravaggio, Cézanne, De Staël, Morandi, Bacon; Dante, Manzoni , Tommaseo, Hawthorne, James, Dickinson, Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Rimbaud ...), offering a new and suggestive interpretation of Bassani's “writing beyond the heart”.

    Description: Intorno a Boccaccio/Boccaccio e dintorni 2020 collects the Proceedings of the Seminar that took place in Certaldo Alta on 10-11 September 2020, in one of the short intervals that the pandemic has left open to face-to-face meetings. The Seminar, now in its seventh edition, is configured not only as one of the main activities of the Ente Giovanni Boccaccio, but as an international event, whose importance is confirmed by the continuous increase in citations in the scientific bibliography.     Description: Nowadays, lexicographical studies require an interaction with Digital Humanities. This volume presents the genesis and structure of the LBC database, a digital work support tool developed by the Multilanguage Cultural Heritage Lexicon Research Unit under the aegis of the University of Florence, which allows to carry out text research in six different digital corpora (French, English, Italian, Russian, Spanish, German). The authors illustrate the specificities of each corpus in terms of the chosen sources and propose lexicographical and translational uses.
