    Notes: Moment analysis is a powerful tool in reactor bed analysis. Weighted moments is a technique which has been introduced to increase the accuracy of moment estimation. The supposed advantage of weighted moments is reevaluated utilizing an optimum truncation point. The resulting coefficient of variation in the moment estimates is shown to be superior to an arbitrary truncation point for all weighting factors. When an optimum truncation point is used, little advantage is observed for weighted moments.

    Notes: Cyclic regeneration of activated carbon containing adsorbed sodium dodecyl-benzene sulfonate (DBS) was studied in fluidized beds at 1119 K and 101.3 kPa. Optimum restoration of adsorption capacity (97.2% per cycle) resulted when gasification with 21.5% steam was continued for 200 s. At that time, about 85% of the DBS added to the carbon during the adsorption process had been removed. Because of the adsorbed inorganic residue from DBS, these results are somewhat different from earlier studies with the sucrose-carbon system. With sucrose, maximum restoration of adsorption capacity was achieved when a weight equivalent to 100% of the adsorbed sucrose was removed by thermal decomposition and steam gasification.

    Notes: This study is focused on deposition rate processes leading to inefficiency and “hot corrosion” in fossil-fuel-fired furnaces and engines. The inorganic compounds which deposit on heat exchanger surfaces and blades are formed in combustion product gases when the fuel and/or ingested air contains inorganic impurities. An improved understanding of the coupled thermodynamic, kinetic, and transport processes governing the deposition rate of inorganic oxides and salts from hot gases containing these compounds (or their precursors) can suggest more efficient test strategies and control measures. Accordingly, an optical interference method for accurately measuring the growth rate of deposits well before the onset of run-off under laboratory burner conditions has been developed.To demonstrate the technique and provide data suitable for theoretical model development, a deliberately simple chemical system and target geometry are used. BCl3(g) is introduced into a premixed C3H8-air flat flame at atmospheric pressure. The growth rate of B2O3(I) on an electrically heated platinum ribbon is then measured interferometrically over a range of fuel/air ratios and seed levels. However, the very existence of B2O3(I) deposition at the present seed levels and surface temperatures (about 1,200-1,300 K) clearly demonstrates the importance of kinetic restrictions on B2O3(I) gasification reactions. Optically measured film growth rates are obtained at film thicknesses small enough to neglect condensate run-off, hence they yield vapor deposition rates directly. These deposition rates are found to be in good agreement with the predictions of a recently developed multicomponent mass-transfer boundary layer (BL) theory, with a constrained equilibrium ((HBO2)3 precluded) boundary condition. Remarkably, at a constant value of the BCl3 flow rate, the Pt ribbon temperature above which there is no B2O3 condensate (i.e., the so-called dew point) is observed to depend on the fuel/air ratio. Whereas previous equilibrium-based deposition models cannot embrace such phenomena, a semi-quantitative argument, based on the nonequilibrium chemistry of B2O3 precursor formation and (HBO2)3-formation barriers, explains these potentially significant trends. These encouraging results suggest a more general applicability for the optical methods and chemically frozen (CF) BL theory described herein, and demonstrate the important role of heterogeneous and homogeneous kinetic barriers in determining dew points and deposition rates in combustion systems.

    Notes: Three-dimensional natural convection patterns in an enclosure under conditions simulating flow in glass-making furnaces have been calculated using an approximate method in which solutions for the temperature and velocity fields in orthogonal two-dimensional planes are superposed. The computational method was tested by comparison with measurements of the temperatures and velocities in an enclosure heated and cooled from above and with a controlled heat loss from the sides. Good agreement was found between measurements and computations under conditions of interest in glass-making furnaces, wherein the motion in one of the two orthogonal planes is dominant.

    Notes: A method for tracking the economically optimal operating conditions of a chemical process in the presence of constraints is developed. The technique is based on an on-line search rather than a fundamental model. The most profitable operating point is found by fitting a dynamic model of the process based on data obtained from experimental moves on the plant.This model is used to compute gradients of the economic objective and of the constraints so that a direction of economic improvement inside the allowed operating region of the plant is always obtained. Constraint violations during the transients are prevented by a multivariable regulator. A new regulation method (Internal Model Control) is used which permits explicit handling of constraints and which can be made robust against modelling errors. This combined optimization/regulation approach is tested in a demonstrative simulation example and shown to be reliable for following a moving optimum and safely handling complex constraint moves.

    Notes: A Numerical study, based on the theoretical developments of Part I of this series, has demonstrated that the chemical activity of a solute can have a significant effect on the convective dispersion behavior of multiphase reactors, and that the dispersion parameters estimated using inert tracers for the individual phases may not be representative of the parameters that should be used in the design of reactive systems. Moreover, the use of different transverse averaging procedures for the individual phases can give rise to additional interaction effects between the phases which are not accounted for in the traditional axial dispersion models. The predicted differences in dispersion parameter values depending on whether the solute is inert or not, are in qualitative agreement with published experimental results.

    Notes: The hydrodynamic behavior of a cocurrent gas-liquid-solid semifluidized bed was investigated. A separate investigation was performed on a packed bed and a fluidized bed under gas-liquid flow conditions similar to that for the semifluidized bed. Parameters of the semifluidized bed under extensive study include pressure drop, gas holdup, onset liquid velocity for semifluidization, and the height of the packed bed section and the fluidized section. The pressure drop of the semi-fluidized bed obtained experimentally was compared favorably with that predicted by the model equations.

    Notes: A model is developed that calculates the chemical equilibrium that exists between a flowing electrolyte solution and mineral assemblages. The development computes the mineral and aqueous compositions as a function of time and position in a one-dimensional porous medium. The model considers the dissolution of solids as well as their precipitation. The application of the model to various problems has revealed that characteristic aqueous and solid phase concentration waves develop and propagate through the system in a chromatographic manner. Example calculations are presented that illustrate the widespread applicability of the model. Specifically, a calculation is presented that reproduces the genetic mineralization features that are found in sandstone-type uranium deposits.

    Notes: A two-dimensional model for stratified turbulent-turbulent gas-liquid flow in inclined pipes is proposed. The gas phase is treated as bulk flow, but an exact solution is carried out for the liquid phase, applying the eddy viscosity theory to model the turbulent viscosity. The interfacial structure is taken into consideration using appropriate correlations for the interfacial shear stress. The model is capable of predicting the liquid velocity field, holdup and pressure drop given gas and liquid flow rates, physical properties, pipe size, and angle of inclination. The results are substantially better than the prediction of Lockhart and Martinelli (1949) correlation and better than the Taitel and Dukler (1976) model for stratified flow.

    Notes: Particle deposition by diffusiophoresis and thermophoresis is described using the linearized Fickian multicomponent diffusion equations. For these cases, the diagonal component of the diffusivity matrix for the particle is expected to be much smaller than the other diagonal components. Intuitive arguments, dimensional analyses and the standard interfacial transport theories in multicomponent form suggest that the larger boundary layer due to the larger diffusivity component describes the transition between bulk and surface values for both components.

    Notes: Experimental information available in the literature for the sulfation of a wide variety of calcined limestones and dolomites has been used to establish rates of reaction over their entire range of conversion. The reaction rate was found to decay exponentially with extent of conversion and implicated parameters related to two factors, each factor representing a diffusional resistance. These factors define two generalized constants which permit the prediction of the decaying parameters associated with the sorptive capacity of the sorbent.The sorptive capacity, x∞, which represents the ultimate conversion of the solid sorbent, has been found to depend on the pore size distribution, the chemical composition of the limestone and/or dolomite and its accessible pore surface area. The combined contribution of x∞ along with predicted parameters permit the calculation of conversion vs. time relationships that are found in close agreement with experimental measurements for the ten sorbents investigated, with the exception of one.

    Notes: Variational inequality minimization (VIM) theory of statistical mechanics is used to derive analytic equations of state for polar fluids. For the pair-intermolecular potential energy function in the formulation of this theory, the Lennard-Jones, dipolar, quarupolar, and dipolar-quadrupolar interactions are used. For the three-body potential Axilrod-Teller function is used. The VIM theory has made it possible to derive algebraically analytic expressions for the thermodynamic functions of polar fluids. Thermodynamic properties of carbon dioxide, methyl chloride, ethane, hexane, iso-butane, and sulfur dioxide in the liquid and vapor phases are predicted with the use of the VIM equation of state. The results of the predictions are shown to be in very good agreement with the experimental data for majority of the fluids which are studied.

    Notes: Human blood is sheared in cone-and-plate and parallel-plate rotational viscometers, the latter with variable plate spacings h. Plasma is analyzed for hemoglobin and LDH content before and after shearing to determine the extent of shear-induced blood damage within the low-stress regime (stress ≤ 13 Pa). Geometrical variations in the test apparatus can be accommodated by correlating blood damage with the radially-averaged shear rate. Data on expired blood are shown to imply that much of the damage arises in the bulk fluid, with a smaller contribution from surface effects. Models are proposed to explain these results, obtained over a shear rate range to 5,000 s-1; parallel-plate platen separation is 0.25 〈 h 〈 1.00 mm, cone-and-plate angle is 0.5°, and both systems have platens 100 mm in diameter.

    Notes: A single polystyrene sphere of radius a, between 141 and 275 micron, when in jected into a disk-plate (torsional) flow of polybutene (viscosity 36 poise, Mn ∼680), migrates radially inward at a rate that is dramatically increased by dissolving 1% of a high-molecular-weight polyisobutylene (Mv ∼106) to make the fluid viscoelastic. The torsional flow field was created by rotating a 21-cm-diameter disk at a rate ω of 6-9 rpm with a gap H of 3.7-5.4 mm between this and a ground glass plate with the fluid in the gap. Lateral migration toward a lower shear rate increased with increasing shear rate and with increasing shear rate gradient in the manner predicted by Brunn (1976) or Chan and Leal (1977). Shear rates up to 25 s-1 were investigated. Below a shear rate of 8 s-1 the radial migration velocity is of the form vr = - L(ωa/H)2r, where L is a positive constant containing the fluid properties, and r is the radial position of the particle.

    Notes: Preparative, multicomponent liquid chromatographic separations have been achieved by using a slowly rotating annular sorbent bed with fixed multiple feed points and fixed product withdrawal locations. The cation exchange separation of copper, nickel, and two cobalt complexes has been extensively used to study the effects of rotation rate, eluent rate, bed loading, and column size on separation performance. Experimental results have been compared with three theoretical models: plate theory, an analytical solution which incorporates multicomponent Langmuir isotherms, and an extension of the analytical solution to include dispersion effects.

    Notes: An integral method including the entrainment hypothesis of Hoult, Fay and Forney (1969) is used to predict the concentration of product formed in a buoyant jet in a crossflow. The analysis is restricted to a slow, irreversible, second-order reaction with premixed reactants. Reliable laboratory data are presented for the oxidation of nitric oxide by the reaction 2NO + O2 → 2NO2 with excess O2 and these results are correlated with the theory. Additional measurements are recorded to provide information on the magnitude of the turbulent parameters necessary for proper closure of the rate expressions.

    Notes: Intermediate phases and reactions occurring on decomposing diammonium hydrogen phosphate, ammonium para molybdate, sodium tungstate dihydrate and ammonium meta vanadate were established by thermal analysis and X-ray examination.These salts promote fabric degradation at low temperatures but are effective at high temperatures. Diammonium hydrogen phosphate produced maximum amount of gases, absorbed the highest amount of heat and gave the highest fire retardation above 350°C.

    Notes: Hydrogen sulfide is oxidized to elemental sulfur by ferric ion chelated with nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) in aqueous solution at pH 3.5 to 4.5. The reaction appears to be fast relative to gas- and liquid-phase diffusion, and the transfer of H2S from a gas stream is correlated well by the theory of absorption with instantaneous chemical reaction. The ferrous ion formed in this reaction may be reoxidized with oxygen absorbed from a stream of air. The presence of NTA catalyzes the reaction of O2 and Fe2+ in the same pH range, and diffusion is again controlling. Design calculations based on laboratory data for both absorption steps show that cocurrent gas-liquid contactors are advantageous for achieving high reaction rates (e.g., ∼99.99% H2S removal), high gas velocities (10 to 20 m/s), low pressure drops [1 to 3 kPa (10 to 30 cm H2O)], and moderate column heights (10 to 15 m).

    Notes: Preferential adsorption of organic compounds onto activated carbon from dilute aqueous solutions is studied to develop a comprehensive theoretical basis for predicting the adsorption of structurally different isomers for different homologous series. The fundamental multidimensional approachof the solvophobic (cφ) thermodynamic theory is further refined and used to correlate the extent of adsorption for the comprehensive theory with the overall standard net free energy change (ΔGnet/RT) for the association-adsorption reaction in solution, and for the simplified theory with the cavity surface area of the solute (TSA).Experimental adsorption isotherms of two homologous series (12 aliphatic alcohols and 21 aliphatic ketones) were measured and used to test and compare the cφ theory with seven independent parameters characterizing the sorbates. Several experimental innovations for measuring equilibrium adsorption isotherms are introduced to reduce the possible loss of sorbate during the procedure and to provide reproducible and reliable results.Comparing the coefficients of linear correlation (r), the results for 12 aliphatic alcohols give greater than 99% confidence that the r-values are different for ΔGnet/RT and molecular weight (MW). For the 15 aliphatic ketones, greater than 90% confidence interval is obtained for different r-values for TSA and MW.These results support the contention that simple structural modifications of aliphatic homologous compounds can be used to predict the effect of solute-solvent-sorbent interactions on adsorption. The cφ theory can thus be used to rank-order adsorption intensity of these compounds from the aqueous phase onto activated carbon.

    Notes: Flatter velocity profiles and more uniform thermal environents are extremely desirous factors for improved performance in flow reactors and heat exchangers. One means of achieving this in laminar flow systems is to use mixers and flow inverters. These improve performance but at higher initial and operating costs. This paper introduces a new and more effective device for flow inversion which is achieved by changing the direction of centrifugal force in helically-coiled tubes. Transient response experiments carried out under the conditions of both negligible and significant molecular diffusion reveal drastic narrowing of the residence time distribution (RTD). The effectiveness of the present device can be assessed by the fact that even at a Dean number of 3 the value of dispersion number as low as 0.0013 is obtained under the condition of significant diffusion, and in the case of negligible diffusion the value of dimensionless time at which the first element of tracer appears at the outlet is as high as 0.85.

    Notes: One of the difficulties encountered in the operation of an activated sludge process is the phenomenon of bulking sludge.In an activated sludge process which is composed of a completely mixed aeration tank and a sedimentation vessel, the dynamic behavior of the system can be analyzed using a mathematical model. The model developed here is based on the kinetics and settleability of the combination of floc-forming sludge and bulking sludge. The operating conditions that cause the bulking phenomenon are clarified on the phase plane. It is also shown that a type of nonlinear state feedback regulator makes the system stable.

    Notes: By the use of a perfectly mixed model and an imperfectly mixed one for lowdensity polyethylene vessel reactors, we show that increases in the initiator consumption with polymerization temperature are due to mixing limitations at the initiator feed. With all its parameters independently estimated, the imperfectly mixed model provides an excellent agreement with experimental data for several initiators, feed flow rates and polymerization pressures. In the temperature region of industrial interest for each type of initiator, the open-loop reactor dynamics drastically change from open-loop unstable, at low temperatures, to open-loop stable at high polymerization temperatures.

    Notes: The performance of spherical catalyst pellets with radially nonuniform distributions of activity is simulated under parallel reaction networks closely resembling hydrocarbon oxidation reactions. Both reaction paths are assumed to be exothermic with the desired path exhibiting lower activation energy requirements than the undesired one. It is shown that nonuniform activity distributions enhance effectiveness and selectivity over a large range of values of the Thiele modulus. Multiple steady states in effectiveness and selectivity are observed for certain values of the heat of reaction parameter.

    Notes: A mathematical model has been developed to simulate the Texaco downflow entrained-bed pilot-plant gasifier using coal liquefaction residues and coal-water slurries as feedstocks. This model describes the physical and chemical processes occurring in an entrained coal gasifier. The gasification kinetics describes different complex reactions occurring in the gasifier and the hydrodynamics describes mass, momentum and energy balances for solid and gas phases. Temperature, concentration and velocity profiles along the reactor height were obtained by solving the mass, momentum and energy balances. Parameter studies were made to provide a better understanding of the reactor performance for various inlet feed conditions utilizing the model.

    Notes: Solid tracer particles were fed pneumatically through a jet into a fluidized bed to simulate the feeding of solids via a pneumatic transport line into a fluidized-bed reactor operating in the slugging-bed mode. The fluidized bed was defluidized instantaneously at different times after the initiation of the tracer particle injection. The bed was then sampled layer by layer to provide the radial and axial concentration profiles of the tracer. Regular and high-speed movies (1,000 frames per second) were taken to study the operation of the fluidized bed and the phenomena of the gas-solid two-phase jet.Experimental results on solid mixing, jet constriction and slugging frequencies, slugging bed height, slug length, jet penetration, and jet half-angle at three nominal jet velocities of 52, 37, and 25 m/s and corresponding solids loadings are presented. Additional experimental results on jet constriction and slugging frequencies, and slug volume (axial slug size) obtained for a wider range of jet velocities confirm the hydrodynamic trends observed during the tracer particle injection experiments. The results indicate that solids mixing increases, and well-mixed conditions are reached earlier, with an increase in jet injection velocity. The obtained mixing times were correlated successfully in terms of the excess gas velocity. The experimental data on jet penetration and slug motion were satisfactorily correlated by modified versions of existing theoretical relations. The modifications included the effect of the injected solids on jet penetration and jet half-angle and also the effect of our semicircular column geometry and single wall-slug configuration on the observed slug motion.

    Notes: A simple particle model is used to interpret differential thermogravimetric data taken on the gasification of coal/char with CO2, H2 and H2O. The model takes into account the major physical factors which influence the gasification rate, viz., the changing magnitudes of surface area, porosity, activation energy and effective diffusivity during gasification. Specific reaction rate constants based on surface area and activation energies are extracted from the data. Practical criteria for regimes of reaction rate and diffusion control and for particle isothermality are developed. For isothermal particles at low classical Thiele moduli, the data can be correlated with only one parameter, which has a simple physical interpretation.

    Notes: When a small drop or bubble is driven through a liquid phase to a fluid-fluid interface, a thin liquid film which forms between them drains, until an instability forms and coalescence occurs. Lin and Slattery (1982b) developed a hydrodynamic theory for the first portion of this coalescence process: the drainage of the thin liquid film which occurs while it is sufficiently thick that the effects of London-van der Waals forces and electrostatic forces can be ignored. Here we extend their theory to include the effects of the London-van der Waals forces. To simplify the analysis, we follow the suggestion of Buevich and Lipkina (1975, 1978) in developing an expression for the rate of thinning at the rim or barrier ring of the draining film. A linear stability analysis permits us to determie the coalescence time or the elapsed time between the formation of a dimpled film and its rupture at the rim.For comparison, this same linear stability analysis is applied to the thinning equations developed by MacKay and Mason (1963) for the plane parallel disc model and by Hodgson and Woods (1969) for the cylindrical drop model.For all three models, our linear stability estimate for the coalescence time tc is in better agreement with the available experimental data than is the elapsed time t∞ between the formation of a dimpled film and its drainage to zero thickness at the rim in the absence of instabilities.

    Notes: Until now the oxygen transfer in viscous non-Newtonian solutions has been studied only in bubble columns of about 0.14-m diameter. Recently Godbole et al. (1982) reported much smaller gas holdups in Carboxy Methyl Cellulose solutions (CMC) for a large-diameter column. Therefore, the gas holdups, volumetric mass transfer coefficients, and specific gas-liquid interfacial areas are measured in CMC solutions using a bubble column of diameter 0.305 m and height 3.4 m. The transition from churn-turbulent to slug flow regime occured at higher viscosities and the gas holdups and volumetric mass transfer coefficients were lower in both flow regimes than reported for smaller column diameters. Empirical correlations are presented for the gas holdup, volumetric mass transfer coefficient, and specific gas-liquid interfacial area which would be suitable for the design of fermentors.

    Notes: Primary causes of deactivation of hydrodesulfurization catalysts are partial poisoning of the interior pore surface and pore-mouth plugging by deposition of metals from organo-metallic compounds in the reactor feed. A model is developed to account for both causes of deactivation. It can be used to predict which occurs first: complete surface poisoning or pore-mouth plugging. Equations are formulated for catalyst activity as a function of time for demetallization and also for desulfurization. The results depend upon particle geometry and geometry of deposited species, Thiele moduli for demetallization and desulfurization, and relative rates of desulfurization on fresh and partially poisoned catalytic surfaces. The treatment is for a single, isothermal catalyst particle.

    Notes: A film model is presented for the analysis of mass transfer to a rotating hemispherical electrode when sinusoidal alternating current (AC) together with direct current (DC) are flowing across the electrode surface. The concentration of a diffusing ion is separated into two independent components: a constant DC component and a periodic AC component. The DC concentration is obtained by solving the steady-state convective mass transport equation with the perturbation method. The periodic AC concentration distribution is analyzed by the solution to the one-dimensional transient diffusion equation based on the concept of Nernst diffusion layer. The limiting AC current densities corresponding to a zero surface concentration of a reactive ion are investigated for various DC current densities and AC frequencies. The resulting periodic concentration overpotential wave and its phase shift with respect to the applied AC are examined. A comparison with a previous rigorous model indicates that the film model is a good approximation to the mass transfer calculation in the regimes of a dimensionless AC frequency K = (ω/Ω)Sc1/3 greater than 2 and less than 0.01.

    Notes: Experiments were conducted on the degradation of valeric acid in aqueous solutions by bacteria in attached growth and on the removal of valeric acid from aqueous solutions in granular activated carbon columns. The first type of experiment was intended to obtain results necessary to determine the values of the relevant parameter of biofilm kinetics. These parameters were then used in conjunction with the model developed in Part I to predict the performance of carbon columns for removing valeric acid. Comparisons between experiments and predictions constitute the necessary model validation.

    Notes: The characteristics of a new heterogeneous reactor of the “two impinging streams” type, suitable for gas-solid heat and mass-transfer operations, were investigated.The operating limits of the reactor, with respect to gas and solid particles mass flow rate and pressure drop, were determined; scale-up criteria with respect to the hydrodynamics of the reactor were also established. It has been found that, under certain conditions, the introduction of solid particles into the gas stream lowers the pressure drop on the reactor. In addition, the maximal pumping energy per kg of solids transported through the reactor by the air is much lower than in a fluidized-bed-type reactor.A stochastic model based on Markov processes was developed which closely describes the behavior of the solid particles in the reactor. A technique based on this model was employed for determining the residence time distribution of the particles in the reactor.

    Notes: In a system that is close to chemical equilibrium, the relaxation of each elementary step toward equilibrium obeys the linear laws of nonequilibrium thermodynamics. For a series reaction in which the concentration of the intermediate species are low or do not change with time, the relaxation can be characterized by one time constant, which can be associated with an overall equilibrium exchange rate for the overall reaction. The relationship between the overall equilibrium exchange rate and the equilibrium exchange rates of the individual steps is analogous to that between the overall conductance and the individual conductances of a network of electrical resistors in series. A numerical example is presented to show the range of validity of this relationship. Finally, a condition for the determinability of exchange rates is presented. Exchange rates are independently determinable if and only if the determinant of the matrix, whose elements are made up of squares of the inner products of the vectors that are made up of the stoichiometric coefficients of the species in the reactions, is non-zero.

A resistor-capacitor circuit was used to measure the phase shift between the applied AC and the resulting periodical concentration overpotential. The limiting AC current density corresponding to a zero instantaneous surface concentration was determined as a function of AC frequency and DC current density. The experimental data agreed with the theoretical calculations in a regime of a dimensionless AC frequency K = (ω/Ω)Sc1/3 greater than 1 and less than 200.

    Notes: The bubble formation process at small, single, circular orifices at low gas flow rates is modified when the system is vertically vibrated in a sinusoidal fashion.For systems with significant gas chamber volume, bubble volume in the vibrated case is smaller than in the nonvibrated case. The vibrations increase the amount of liquid weeping through the orifice into the gas chamber. A simple inviscid model adequately predicts bubble formation in the medium-chamber-volume region at low values of amplitude and frequency of vibration and low viscosities. The boundaries of the transition from the FR ≫ 1 to the FR = 1 regions are described in terms of “the acceleration number/Eötvös number”.

Given known steam sources (waste heat and auxiliary boilers) and sinks (heating, process injection, and driver horsepower needs), the algorithm determines the optimal header pressure levels, the distribution of steam turbines in the network, and the steam flows between all devices so as to maximize the real work recovered from the sources. Any number of pressure levels can be accommodated at only modest increase in computational effort.

    Notes: A new method for decomposing irreducible subsets, in the solution of systems of nonlinear algebraic equations, is presented. This method consists of two steps: (1) elimination of the nonlinearity from some of the equations by replacing nonlinear expressions by new variables; and (2) formulation of a problem of smaller dimension by tearing the linear subset of equations. It is shown that these modifications do not change considerably the convergence rate of the Newton-Raphson and Broyden's methods while reducing the problem's dimension. Computer time reduction up to 80% is demonstrated in the examples solved. An algorithm for elimination of nonlinear expressions, which uses Boolean matrices instead of formula manipulation, is also presented.

    Notes: A new experimental method for the measurement of catalyst surface area of supported catalysts has been developed using selective physisorption. The desorption characteristics of a gas are studied separately on the catalyst, the support, and the supported catalyst by carrying out thermal desorption experiments in a continuous flow sorptometer. Differences in the coverage vs. temperature curves, obtained from the thermal desorption experiments, are a measure of the selectivity of the physisorbing gas, and allow calculation of the fraction of total surface area occupied by the catalyst.Two systems have been studied utilizing the thermal desorption with carbon dioxide as adsorbate: potassium carbonate/carbon black and silver/alumina. Supported catalyst surface area was determined for each system; the results were confirmed using physical mixtures of the two components (where the actual area of each component is known) and oxygen chemisorption for the silver/alumina system. The experimental technique allows for straightforward calculation of the catalyst area.

    Notes: The definition of the pipe flow friction factor has been extended to include the effect of fluid viscoelastic properties on energy dissipation in turbulent tube flow. The resulting friction factor includes a characteristic fluid relaxation time, which can be determined directly from rheological measurements, and reduces to the usual Fanning friction factor for inelastic fluids. The use of this more general friction factor enables turbulent tube flow data for both fresh and shear degraded “concentrated” drag reducing polymer solutions of various concentrations in various tube sizes to be correlated by the usual f vs. NRe relation for Newtonian fluids in smooth tubes.

    Notes: The liquefaction kinetics of Powhatan No.5 mine coal (Pittsburgh Seam) in the presence of SRC-II recycle solvent at short contact times (〈10 min) and temperature and pressure ranges of 573-723 K and 10.3-13.8 MPa is examined in a well-mixed reactor. In the initial stages of liquefaction, while overall coal conversion (tetrahydrofuran solubles) increases with temperature, oil (pentane solubles) is lost with an increase in temperature. An increase in solvent-to-coal ratio results in an increase of conversion. The initial coal particle size distribution, total pressure, and nature of gas phase (nitrogen or hydrogen) have no significant effect on the production of any of the product of liquefaction for contact times up to 10 min. A lumped kinetic model is presented to describe the product distribution.

    Notes: Liquid-side mass transfer coefficients were measured for cocurrent two-phase downflow in 5 and 10 cm diameter columns pakced with 2.5 and 4 mm Raschig rings. Experiments were specifically carried out in the pulsing flow regime. The mass transfer coefficients were determined via absorption of CO2 into buffer solutions with the advantage of a high absorbing capacity. Thus columns of 1 m length could be used. Relations are proposed based on the hydrodynamic phenomena observed in pulsing flow. From these relations a correlation for kL is found in terms of flow rates and packing characteristics that satisfies the experimental data.

    Notes: Photographic measurements of transient drop-size distributions from stirred liquid-liquid systems of low dispersed phase fraction in a batch vessel confirm consistency with a similarity behavior from population balance established earlier by Narsimhan et al. (1980). Moreover, breakage functions are presented in generalized dimensionless form accounting for dependence on physical properties of the system and power input through stirring. This information is essential for predicting drop-size distributions in stirred liquid-liquid systems. Experimental measurements of steady-state drip-size distributions obtained from stirred, continuous flow systems with known inlet drop sizes compare very favorably with theoretical predictions based on population balance analysis using the breakage functions obtained from batch experiments.

    Notes: The diffusion and reaction model developed in a previous paper is extended allowing for shrinkage of the char particles. It is shown that possible shrinkage, arising from disintegration of the solid structure at a certain conversion level, modifies severely the extinction behavior of the reacting particles. Specifically, the region of ambient temperature and particle radius in which the predictions of the nonisothermal and of the isothermal versions of the model differ significantly becomes smaller. However, the particle shrinkage does not affect the ignition phenomena observed since a particle usually ignites at low conversion levels where the radius change is still negligible.

    Notes: We have successfully used cross-linked, partially-hydrolyzed, polyacrylamide gels to concentrate solutions of high molecular weight solutes. The gels are sizeselective, concentrating solutes whose diameter exceeds 3 nm. They can be easily regenerated by means of pH-induced changes in gel swelling; this regeneration is consistent with that inferred from existing theories of gel swelling. The resulting separation process is a good alternative to ultrafiltration.

    Notes: A new method for expressing the structure of a system of equations is developed using a type of occurrence matrix entitled the functionality matrix. The functionality matrix indicates not only the occurrence of variables in equations but also the functional form in which they occur. Since the difficulty of solving an equation for a variable is related to its functional form, analysis of the functionality matrix provides explicit information on the difficulty of solution of the solution of the equation.A methodology for the solution of design problems by digital computers is described. This methodology operates on the functionality matrix which describes the set of design equations. Algorithms using this methodology interact and guide the designer in an efficient selection of design variables and redundant equations. Once design variables and redundant equations are selected, a computational method is presented for ordering and solving the equations.
