Beschreibung: Women have made tremendous strides in educational attainment in science and engineering over the past decade, increasing their proportion of doctorate awards in these fields from 7 percent in 1965 to 23 percent in 1980. But they still have higher unemployment rates and lower salaries than men in all fields of science and engineering, at all degree levels, and at all levels of experience; and the disparities between men and women widen with higher degree levels and with years of experience. Graduate enrollments indicate continuing increases over at least the next several years in degree awards to women, but their access to equal employment and advancement opportunities is not assured.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Vetter, B M -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1981 Dec 18;214(4527):1313-21.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7313688" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notizen: Abstract Media reports indicate the decline of the technological literacy of American youth, especially that students in other countries are better prepared in science and mathematics. Our active-learning program, which consists of numerous hands-on experiments, introduces engineering applications into science and math programs, that will demonstrate to students the usefulness of the theory that they currently do not see as useful. The program, when fully developed, will make optimum use of technology, especially computers and videotapes. The hands-on experiments allow students to discover fundamental principles through data analysis and then use the principles to synthesize a solution to a technological problem. This discovery-based education will help school systems better meet performance standards such as those in the Maryland School Performance Plan. The experimental approach to science education is especially important in a technology-oriented economy where children use the new technologies without understanding the principles on which they are based.

Notizen: The electromagnetic radiation from electronic systems is formulated in terms of an integral equation for the electric and the equivalent magnetic current density, which is numerically solved by the method of moments. The electromagnetic coupling to conducting thin wires, thin plates, and aperture fitted cabinets is taken into account by appropriate operator equations. In order to solve the integral equation of electrically large conducting structures, suitable basis functions are needed to minimize the computation time. B-spline functions of the second and third degree are used as a basis in the moment method, which lead to a decrease of the computation time.A second way to decrease the computation time is given by the possibility of determining which parts of the structure of a printed circuit board (PCB) have to be considered and which parts can be neglected. Examples show that the influence of near source conducting areas to the radiated emissions is strong. It will be shown that this influence depends on the geometrical symmetry, the shape, and the distance of the scattering body.

Notizen: This paper presents the simulation of a class of MIMD systems using discrete-event simulation enhanced by graphics-oriented reporting. MIMD systems can be specified, modelled and simulated using the package and in turn provide estimates of certain performance indices. A multiserver queueing model is constructed to describe the flow of data and instructions through the various elements of the system. The model is composed of P processors sharing M memory modules through a user-defined interconnection network. Graphical outputs allow the user to view the state of every processor/memory module over the simulation time with performance estimates such as the relative speedup, throughput, and utilization factor. Moreover, system performance graphs as a function of various system parameters are obtained to indicate the expected system behaviour for various loads and system configurations. The results section shows a case study of the influence of the memory modules' access time on the system performance. The purpose of the results is to aid in the analysis, understanding, design, and performance prediction of a class of MIMD systems in a user-friendly environment.

Notizen: A computer program has been written for the analysis and design of arbitrarily shaped waveguides, containing dielectric and magnetic materials. The program calculates the propagating modes of the waveguide by the three-component vector finite element method. High accuracy is achieved by the use of high-order elements, and by the inclusion of singular trial functions near sharp metal edges. An efficient algorithm based on the conjugate gradient method is used to solve the algebraic eigenvalue problem. Results are given for rib waveguide and fin-line.

Notizen: A major limitation of the boundary element method (BEM) for the solution of electrical potential problems is the long computational time required. However, a large portion of the calculations involved can be viewed as being parallel in nature and can therefore be computed concurrently. This paper makes an effort to increase the efficiency of the BEM process using transputer-based multiprocessor computing techniques. The algorithms developed may equally well be applied to any multiprocessor system. The application selected to demonstrate the technique is the solution of an electrostatic problem governed by a two-dimensional Laplace equation.A parallel algorithm for problem setup and field extraction using BEM is designed and implemented on a transputer array. Special attention is directed to the utilization of the parallel processors to achieve maximum efficiency. The analysis in this work concentrates on the communication strategies for passing data between processors as well as a consideration of the workload attributed to each processor. The parallel algorithms were implemented using 3L Parallel Fortran; however, the choice of topology for the overall BEM implementation was limited by the fact that certain parts of the algorithm could only utilize a pipeline configuration of processors. Comprehensive results for the parallel BEM algorithm are given and they are encouraging, indicating that parallel processing has much to offer when applied to the boundary element method.

Notizen: The diffusion of Zn into a GaAs crystal is modelled using numerical techniques similar to those of Zahari and Tuck.1 This technique does not directly solve any differential equations, the physical processes are directly modelled. The diffusion of Zn is assumed to be by the kick-out mechanism. In this mechanism the Zn atoms diffuse into the crystal interstitially with a constant diffusion coefficient. The interstitial Zn atoms transfer to the substitutional lattice site by kicking out a Ga atom. The incorporation of the Zn atoms on to the lattice sites is assumed to take place at a rate much greater than the diffusion of the interstitial Zn. The diffusion of the generated Ga interstitial is also contained in the model. The effect on the Zn concentration profile and Ga interstitial concentration of varying both the Ga interstitial diffusivity and equilibrium concentration has been examined. Finally, the implications of these results on Zn induced disordering of GaAs/AlAs superlattices is discussed.

Notizen: This paper describes a novel technique with which a system with changing topology can be modelled whilst maintaining a constant system matrix. This technique employs a new transmission-line switch model which has a constant characteristic impedance, irrespective of its state. The method is explained, compared with the switched-resistance method and demonstrated by two examples. It has been found that the proposed method offers substantial advantages in the formulation of the problems and in the efficiency of computation.

Notizen: Analysis of transients in integrated circuits is performed with the use of highly specialized computer programs. The transient responses are computed using time-marching integration methods and require a substantial amount of computer time. A new method based on spectral analysis and waveform relaxation is proposed. The method results in a substantial saving in computing time without compromising the accuracy. A basic algorithm utilizing the spectral technique in a relaxation framework is described. A prototype simulator based on the algorithm was developed and used to simulate certain types of CMOS circuits. The results showed a significant time savings in comparison with the widely used circuit simulator ‘SPICE’. Example circuits and relevant results are provided.

Notizen: Hallen's integral equation has been used as the basis for the formulation of cylindrical antenna theories for many years. Being a Fredholm integral equation of the first kind, its solution is mathematically an ill-posed problem. The stability of the numerical methods based on this integral equation is dependent on the singularity and the non-smoothness of the kernel function. For electrically thick cylindrical antennas, the dominance of the singular part of the kernel (logarithmic) is weakened and the kernel function becomes relatively smooth. This observation implies possible deteriorations of the stability of the numerical methods based on Hallen's integral equation. This paper describes the development of an alternative formulation for the electrically thick cylindrical antennas based on the singular integral equation of the first kind with a Cauchy-type kernel which eliminates the potential instability problem. A numerical method based on this formulation of the antenna problem has been implemented and case studies show that it is very stable and efficient for the numerical modelling of electrically thick cylindrical antennas.

Notizen: The paper presents a simple algorithm for solving a system of inhomogeneous high order differential equations with variable coefficients. The method also provides a numerical solution to non-linear ordinary differential equations. The technique is based on reducing the high order equations into a system of first order rate equations. Through a simple translation process, the variables in the reduced set of equations are solved simultaneously by an iterative scheme using the TLM multicompartment model. The numerical technique is demonstrated by solving well-known second order differential equations. The numerical solutions are compared with the analytical solutions to the differential equations.

Notizen: The difference equations of the scalar linear transmission-line matrix (TLM) routine as introduced by Johns for numerically solving the diffusion equation are shown to be isomorphic to Goldstein's correlated random walk model of diffusion. For the infinite homogeneous bar their exact solution is derived algebraically and given in the form of Jacobi polynomials. This puts the TLM algorithm on a sounder mathematical and physical basis. The accuracy in solving the diffusion equation is investigated in general form and thus its astonishing efficiency explained. Several other basic questions of this numerical technique are also discussed.

Notizen: The transmission-line matrix (TLM) method enables simulation of interior electromagnetic field propagation problems. With the use of absorbent walls, we can simulate exterior problems such as the radiaition of a microstrip antenna. The input impedance is deduced from the standing wave observed in the feedline. The radiation pattern is determined from the field over a plane located in the immediate vicinity of the antenna, using the theory of radiating apertures. However, the CPU time and memory space involved are excessive. Since the radiating structure has several resonant frequencies, it is convenient to apply classical digital signal processing techniques such as finite impulse response filtering associated with a linear prediction method. The present paper focuses on a Prony-Pisarenko method to improve on the TLM method in terms of both computation time and precision of the frequency-domain analysis of the results. In this case, overall CPU time is reduced by a factor of 2 to 3. The paper discusses the results obtained for radiation patterns. This represents a new field of application for the TLM method whose drawbacks are reduced by using appropriate signal processing methods.

Notizen: A comprehensive analysis procedure is presented to investigate mode propagation in a class of semiconductor-based transmission lines suitable for application in microwave or optoelectronic circuits. The method of lines (MoL) has been used to investigate single or multiconductor planar transmission line structures printed on a combination of insulating and semiconducting substrate. Homogeneous as well as inhomogeneous doping areas in the semiconductor are included in the theoretical formulation. Numerical results are presented for III-V semiconductor travelling wave electro-optic modulators in double-rib, multilayer strip waveguide configuration, microslabTM transmission lines with partial and full strip cover and slow-wave MIS microstrip/coplanar transmission lines on thick and thin film semiconductor substrate with gradually inhomogeneous doping layer.

Tests on a 2-D generalized Kronig-Penney energy band model showed excellent agreement; between FEM results and analysis. The solver was further satisfactorily checked against published augmented plane wave calculations for a circular potential well within a square lattice. Specimen results are presented for the same circular well but with graded potential distributions and for a rectangular potential barrier set askew in a square lattice. Two-dimensional energy band solvers have application to superlattice nanostruc- tures, whilst a general, full 3-D FEM quantum solver seems feasible.

Notizen: Computer models in electromagnetics are based primarily either on integral or on differential equations. The former arise from source integrals using some appropriate Green's function whereas the latter originate from the Maxwell curl equations. Although requiring volume rather than surface sampling even for spatially homogeneous problems, in contrast to integral-equation (IE) models, differential-equation (DE) models are geneally a better choice for problems involving spatial inhomogeneities. This is because such problems require volumetric sampling using either approach, but the DE model produces a sparse matrix rather than the full matrix of the IE formulation. In this paper we describe a new approach based on using multiply propagated fields for numerically solving the banded matrix that results from discretizing the Helmholtz equation. A computer-time savings of N1/2 and N2/3 for two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) problems, respectively, is made possible, where N is the total number of field samples or unknowns. For even moderate-size problems where 100 samples per linear dimension are used (N2 = 10,000 and N3 = 1,000,000), the time savings can be of the order of 100 and 10,000 respectively. Another advantage of this procedure, which we call Helmholtz equation multiple propagator (HEMP), is that the radiation or closure condition needed to terminate the spatial solution mesh for exterior problems can be enforced rigorously with essentially no additional computational cost. The method is illustrated for a 2-D problem by application to plane-wave scattering from an infinite, metal, circular cylinder. Results are presented for the mode amplitudes of the scattered field, the induced surface current, and the bistatic far field as obtained from HEMP, and shown to be in good agreement with the analytical results. Although limited here to the simplest possible application in order to establish its feasibility, the approach's advantage would be its applicability to 2-D and 3-D problems involving inhomogeneous, penetrable objects.

Notizen: Two computer programs DOTIG1 and DOTIG2 were developed to calculate, in the time-domain, the interaction of transient electromagnetic pulses (EMP) with perfect electric conductor structures modelled by thin wires (DOTIG1) or patches (DOTIG2). DOTIG1 uses the electric field integral equation and DOTIG2 the magnetic field integral equation. Briefly described below are the numerical procedures used to develop both programs and some results that show their characteristics.

Notizen: This paper presents a time-domain method to calculate electromagnetic plane wave induced surges on overhead multiconductor transmission lines. By means of some particular line impulse responses, the method takes into account the distributed nature of the coupling with plane wave radiated fields. A comparison of measured plane-wave induced voltages reported in the literature and calculated voltages shows a very close agreement.

Notizen: Studies on the propagation of picosecond pulses in coupled microstrip line interconnections on silicon integrated circuit substrates are presented. The effects of conductor and dielectric losses in the transmission line on the distortion, delay and attenuation of picosecond pulses are studied in detail. A direct comparison is made with the propagation characteristics of interconnects using ordinary metals and high-temperature superconductors such as YBa2Cu3O7. The results generally show the advantages of using high-temperature superconductor tracks on low-loss integrated circuit substrates such as GaAs. However, even in this case, geometrical dispersion can cause distortion on the pulses and it is therefore an important factor to be considered.

Notizen: A two-dimensional lossy shunt TLM node is incorporated into a TLM system and adapted to model for the first time the Maxwell field equations in thin semiconductor samples. Both the characteristics of the node and the TLM system itself are fully described. By considering a parallel-plate structure containing a thin GaAs sample, driven by a voltage source, it is shown, with an example, that this TLM technique can simulate the response of non-stationary electromagnetic fields in a semiconductor to applied excitations.

Notizen: Transmission-line laser models (TLLMs) are time-domain models suitable for the simulation of complex phenomena in semiconductor lasers. TLLMs include time-domain filters based on transmission-line stubs to model the spectral dependence of the material gain. In this paper, numerical simulations are presented which show that the accuracy of these gain models is dependent on the model's iteration timestep. Analytical formulae are derived that relate the accuracy of the filters to the timestep, filter centre frequency, and filter bandwindth. A new wideband stub filter which allows the material gain to be modelled using a larger timestep is presented. This is equivalent to a digital infinite-impulse-response filter, which is more computationally efficient than finite-impulse-response filters, and is unconditionally stable. The new gain model can improve the computational speed for simulating for multimode Fabry-Perot lasers by a factor of 10-100.

Notizen: Symbolic computational systems introduce some unique features in computational engineering. There have been several papers published on the solution of differential equations under given boundary conditions by symbolic systems. The finite element formalism has received prime attention in the course of development of symbolic computation in engineering. The main idea has been to develop a symbolic FEM package to reduce the burden of manual algebra, eliminate errors introduced by numerical quadrature, and improve the efficiency of element generation. This work discusses a symbolic solution to electromagnetic linear antenna problems. The solution is a method of moments that transforms Pocklington's integral equation to a matrix equation. The symbolic system is used to produce (1) analytical integration, (2) the parametric expression for the input impedance and (3) computational code for forward and reverse problem of the input impedance.

Notizen: This paper presents a new finite element formulation in the Laplace domain for both diffusion and wave equations with applications in the field of electrical engineering. With the aid of congruence transformation of matrices, the finite element equations in the Laplace domain are solved and time-domain results can be obtained through the inverse Laplace transform. In a test problem, good agreement between the numerical results derived with the present method and the analytical solutions has been found. For applications in which only Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions are involved, this new finite element approach can be applied and provide both frequency-domain and time-domain results in one run without any timestepping scheme. The limitations of using the congruence transformation in solving propagation problems are also addressed in this paper.

Notizen: A hybrid method obtained as a combination of the coupled-mode method (CMM) and the mode-matching method (MMM) is developed and applied in the analysis of multiple dielectric and magnetic discontinuities in rectangular waveguides. As both are moment methods, some kind of truncation has to be carried out in the computer implementation. It is shown that selection of a different number of modes in the two methods is not necessary, unless low-permittivity meida inside the waveguide are considered. As a consequence, the procedure for slecting the number of basis functions is only done in one of the methods. Numerical examples are presented showing the behaviour of the method and the proofs of convergence. Examples are included illustrating the power of this hybrid technique, especially in relation to non-reciprocal structures containing magnetized ferrites.

Notizen: This paper describes a parallel three-dimensional finite difference time-domain (FDTD) code for electromagnetic field simulation that has been developed for the Connection Machine (CM-2). The CM-2 is briefly discussed. Then the FDTD method is reviewed using a one-dimensional example, and the extensions required for the 3-D case are outlined. The parallelization of the FDTD method is considered, and a simple analytical timing model is dervied. This model predicts the efficiency of the parallelized algorithm as a function of grain size. Some specific points relating to the implementation of the parallel FDTD algorithm in Fortrans-90 on the CM-2 are discussed. Timing data for the parallel 3-D FDTD code measured on a CM-2 is presented and compared qualitatively with the theoretical model. These results are then put into perspective for a particular computations electromagnetics problem, viz. the development of software tools for full-wave modelling of 3-D optical devices. Finally, we draw some conclusions about this work.

Notizen: This paper presents the electrode separation method for the boundary condition of a-Si TFT mixed-level simulation. The Poisson equation and the continuity equation are formulated into equivalent circuits. So, a circuit simulator can be used to handle the two-dimensional numerical simulation of a-Si TFT. The boundary condition problem between a semiconductor and an external circuit is solved by the electrode separation method. An electrode is separated into two nodes to fit Kirchhoff's current law and the semiconductor equations, respectively. A simple a-Si TFT/LCD circuit is taken as an example for the electrode separation method. For mixed-level simulation this technique is very useful. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: Most traditional theories of speech production are currently based on plane waves. However, it is well known that, for acoustic waveguides, higher acoustical modes start to propagate and can become predominant above cut-on frequencies. This paper thus presents the transmission line matrix method, a numerical method initially designed for electromagnetic waves, and its adaptation to acoustic waveguides. The method, and in particular the representation of boundary conditions, is validated by comparison with known analytical theories. It is then used to show the dramatic effect of higher order modes upon the radiation characteristics of uniform ducts, as well as the importance of source location. Finally, first applications to bent and bifurcating rectangular ducts are presented, and the transfer function of a vowel [a] is shown to display frequency patterns typical of those measured on human subjects and that cannot be explained by one-dimensional propagation only. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: A novel procedure for synthesizing multilayered radar absorbing materials (RAMs) is presented. The procedure uses a method for global minimization of multimodal functions of continuous variables based on simulated annealing (SA). The technique is very flexible and reliable, allowing the design of absorbing materials for any grazing or normal angles over the specified frequency bandwidth. The technique is particularly suitable for the efficient design of broadband RAMs and hence for EMC applications.

Notizen: The permeability tensor of the homogeneous bulk material externally equivalent to a laminated packet of non-linear, anisotropic, non-hysteretic sheets is derived by symbolic computation. The composite permeability bears a surprisingly simple algebraic relationship to the local permeabilities of its component materials even in the general case. Several special cases of common interest, where the tensor permeability assumes symmetric or diagonal form, are examined. Results are presented both as algebraic expressions and as brief optimized Fortran subroutines suitable for fitting into field analysis programs.

Notizen: A random flight model of linear transport processes in two spatial dimensions is considered and solved exactly in closed algebraic form. Its one-dimensional version had been proposed by Taitel as a means to overcome the paradox of infinite speed of propagation within classical heat diffusion theory. The connection with hyperbolic diffusion theory is complemented here by deriving the discrete fluxes and their relaxation term. Moreover, such an approach circumvents the discretization of a continuum model for an intrinsically discrete process, when diffusion processes are to be solved numerically. Finite samples are treated by means of the reflection method. Some applications of these general results are mentioned.

Notizen: Under wideband and especially ultrawideband (short pulse) excitation, the electromagnetic fields, after encounters with a propagation or scattering environment, reveal features which range from highly resolved spikes or dips to smooth oscillations at early and late observation times, respectively. Time-domain (TD) analytic modelling should be structured around wave objects which relate features (observables) in data to distinct features in the environment. A strategy to this end, named observable-based parametrization (OBP), is proposed here. The rules are learned from frequency- and time-domain asymptotics applies to spatial and spectral domain representations of tractable prototype problems. This leads to self-consistent hybrid combinations OBP-TD travelling (wavefront) and oscillatory (resonant) synthesizing basis fields; the latter include novel TD leaky modes for guiding wave channels and TD Bragg modes for periodic arrays. These concepts are illustrated by examples.

Notizen: An approach for numerically integrating the partial differential equations describing passive physical systems consists in modelling the continuous-domain physical system by means of a passive discrete-domain system. As has recently been shown, this can be achieved, in particular also for Maxwell's equations, by means of the same principles as known from multidimensional wave digital filters, which offers a number of important advantages. The present paper deals specifically with the application of the approach to Maxwell's equations and supplements corresponding results previously published.

Notizen: There is an increasing interest in the numerical modelling of physical and biological processes using cellular automata or cellular systems. One of the main advantages in using the concept of cellular systems is the inherent high degree of parallelism. The purpose of the contribution is to formally relate two different areas: time-domain modelling of physical processes using cellular systems and massive parallel implementations. At first, an overview of applications of cellular systems in computation theory and in modelling of physical systems and an overview of implementations of cellular systems is given. The subsequent sections address the following two questions: (1) Which class of algorithms can be interpreted as cellular systems. (2) Can cellular systems be efficiently simulated on a given parallel architecture. Results concerning these issues are presented.

Notizen: A finite difference method is used to design a new type of sectoral horn antenna with corner channel inserts which produces a tapered aperture amplitude distribution in the E-plane. The channel inserts, which present a simple modification to the horn aperture geometry, act as effective side-lobe suppression devices. The efficiency of the suppression technique was successfully tested on an experimental horn whose performance is compared to that of a horn with similar geometrical dimensions but with no channel sections.

Notizen: The stress birefringence and mode coupling effects in polarization-preserving fibres are most important problems which need to be improved. For a realization of some optical devices, the dielectric waveguide with sinusoidally varying circular cross-section has been investigated. It becomes very important to analyse the electromagnetic field distribution in a dielectric waveguide with a time-dependent moving boundary. This paper shows that numerical methods can simulate the effect of the external disturbance on the dielectric waveguide from time to time. The author has discussed body fitted grid generation with moving boundary for the Poisson and Laplace equations.1,2 We have extended this technique for Maxwell's equation. The technique employs a kind of an expanded numerical grid generation. As the author adds the time component to grid generation, the time dependent co-ordinate system which coincides with a contour of moving boundary can be transformed into a fixed rectangular co-ordinate system. We could show the electric distribution in the waveguide time by time to verify the possibility of an application for an optical fibre. This technique makes it possible not only to analyse the effect of the external disturbance in a coherent optical communication system but also to fabricate optical devices.

Notizen: A propagator integral interpretation for general TLM processes is presented and applied to discretized Maxwell's equations. The approach provides exact algebraic solutions of finite difference equations along a quite universal scheme.Specifically, Johns's process based on the symmetrical condensed node is reconstructed and generalized as a clear-cut FD algorithm. The fields computed are exact time-domain solutions of the FD equations, provided that total voltages and currents are evaluated and stub quantities are not externally excited. Losses are very naturally incorporated into the TLM algorithm. The structural similarity of the TLM process (properly operated) with the propagator integral appears just as fundamental as general and should have further applications.

Notizen: This paper deals with absorbing boundary conditions for the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method applied to homogeneous lossless waveguide structures. A theoretical formulation of the so-called ‘modal absorption’ (MA) is developed. On the basis of this theory different implementations available in the literature have been derived and compared. Then, some techniques to enhance the efficiency of the method have been proposed and tested. It is demonstrated that, with the proposed methods, the high level of accuracy of the original formulations is retained, while the computational cost is strongly reduced. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: A new approach for the time-domain simulation of power electronic circuits is developed. The methodology is based on stepwise identification of circuit topology. The simulation process automatically looks for a valid topology in every step. At each simulation instant, the circuit topology is transformed into a resistive network, giving another superior feature of this method: the avoidance of solving complicated s-domain or differential formulas. No small-signal approximation is assumed. Parasitic resistance of the reactive element is included in the circuit model. Several examples illustrating the generality and computational efficiency of this new method are presented. The simulated results are favourably verified with experimental measurements and available literature. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: This paper presents an efficient space domain integral formulation of planar dielectric structures based on the concepts of multiresolution analysis (MRA) theory. Battle-Lemarie multiresolution expansions are utilized in the moment method solution of a volume integral equation for the unknown electric field. The generation of sparse moment matrices is explained in view of the cancellation property of wavelet basis functions. The formulation is then applied to two- and three-dimensional dielectric structures including waveguides and resonators, and the numerical results and consequences of matrix sparsity are discussed in detail. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: An efficient wavelet-packet-based time-frequency technique is proposed in this paper. This technique has found applications in inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR). It combines the Wigner-Ville distribution (WVD) of each sub-band signal partitioned from an input signal by the wavelet-packet transform (WPT). These distributions are used to estimate the parameters in Doppler processing. Similar parametric compensation is carried out in range processing so that a specific scatterer is focused in both range and cross-range. The end result uses the Fourier imaging method to obtain a high-resolution radar image. This technique is primarily based on estimation and compensation of the Doppler scattering parameters of the dominant scatterers for improved focus. It can be of great value to the scattering-oriented ISAR imaging. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: Simulation results for a n+-n-n+ two-valley semiconductor device obtained by use of a shock capturing numerical agorithm are presented. The one-dimensional problem is modelled by two systems of Euler equations connected by their source terms, and the Poisson equation. The resulting system of seven equations is hyperbolic and non-linear, and it is a great problem to find an adequate numerical approximation of its time-dependent discontinuities. There are additional complications due to the stiffness of the source terms. The numerical method used in this paper is first-order acurate in time but of high spatial order in regions of smoothness. Before the method is applied, the system has to be transformed to a characteristic form. The adopted shock capturing algorithm enables the choice of the order of the accuracy by the appropriate choice of the reconstruction polynomial. Reconstructions of the second and fourth order are tested and some numerical results are presented. Because of the stiffness of the source terms, the sixth-order accurate scheme breaks down. The results presented, and especially the response obtained of the structure to the step and periodic applied voltage, prove the correctness of the used schemes.

Notizen: An algorithm is developed to evaluate the responses of discontinuous coplanar strip-lines excited by external electromagnetic fields. The algorithm uses the cascade chain matrix method which employs the distributed circuit parameters to model the external field coupling to the line and it is applicable to most commonly encountered discontinuities in microwave integrated circuit interconnects on lossy substrates. A general CAD program is developed based on this model and it is applied to realistic coplanar strip-line interconnections with geometric and resistive discontinuities to illustrate the capabilities of the algorithm. These interconnect models are selected from a practical microwave integrated circuit design. Simplicity and fast speed of the algorithm enable computer-aided analysis of externally induced electromagnetic noise in integrated circuits to be carried out. The effects of dielectric losses in the integrated circuit substrates and the discontinuities in the conducting tracks on the wave coupling are investigated in isolation.

Notizen: The finite element method (FEM) with local absorbing boundary conditions has been recently applied to compute electromagnetic scattering from large 3-D geometries. In this paper, we present details pertaining to code implementation and optimization. Various types of sparse matrix storage schemes are discussed and their performance is examined in terms of vectorization and net storage requirements. The system of linear equations is solved using a preconditioned biconjugate gradient (BCG) algorithm and a fairly detailed study of existing point and block preconditioners (diagonal and incomplete LU) is carried out. A modified ILU preconditioning scheme is also introducted which works better than the traditional version for our matrix systems. The parallelization of the iterative sparse solver and the matrix generation/assembly as implemented on the KSR1 multiprocessor is described and the interprocessor communication patterns are analysed in detail. Near-linear speed-up is obtained for both the iterative solver and the matrix generation/assembly phases. Results are presented for a problem having 224,476 unknowns and validated by comparison with measured data.

Notizen: The vector and scalar variables describing electromagnetic fields with different requirements of continuity can be identified to four different degrees of differential forms. The association of differential forms with finite elements leads to a set of differential forms based elements (Whitney elements); they are naturally adapted to the discretization of different vector and scalar variables. With the help of a Tonti diagram, Maxwell equations can be classified by two dual sequences together with the constitutive laws of materials. The application of Whitney elements to the two dual sequences leads to two dual approximation schemes. As an example, two dual formulations for eddy current computation using potential variables and the hybrid finite element - boundary element method are derived, where Whitney 3-D and 2-D elements are employed. A numerical application is given at the end of the paper, where the dual features of the two formulations are reported.

Notizen: The paper proposes an iterative procedure, called current iteration, for the finite element solution of two-dimensional steady-state skin effect problems in open boundaries. In the procedure a fictitious boundary is introduced enclosing all the conductors. On it, the magnetic vector potential is first guessed and then iteratively updated according to the current density computed in the conductors. Conditions are obtained implying convergence to the exact solution of the unbounded problem whatever the initial guess. The choice of the fictitious boundary and the selection of the relaxation parameter in such a way that computational efficiency is obtained are discussed. The greatest advantage of the procedure is its ease of implementation in a pre-existing finite element code for bounded problems. An axisymmetric version of the procedure is also described since implementation only involves minor changes as compared with the 2-D one. Examples are provided in order to clarify and validate the procedure and compare it with other techniques.

Notizen: There is a class of material processing simulators which require solution of the diffusion equation over a surface which is evolving due to some physical or chemical process related to the concentration of the diffusing species. Because of its explicit and unconditionally stable nature, the transmission line matrix (TLM) method is well suited to efficiently solve the diffusion equation in these instances. However, the methodology for using TLM on a dynamic problem space is not well established. This paper describes the development of algorithms to handle the insertion, deletion and motion of TLM nodes along the one-dimensional surface of a two-dimensional thin film process simulator called GROFILMS. These routines are completely compatible with concurrent time scaling to increase computational efficiency. Central to this development is the use of an asymmetric TLM cell which provides more flexibility for representation and minimizes the disturbance effects of these nodal operations. The scaling routines apply conservation of charge and continuity of current into the affected region to recompute the scattered or the incident pulses as a result of the evolving network. Verification of these results through comparison with known analytic solutions is achieved where possible. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: The scattering of conducting regular polyhedrons of resonant size is studied by means of the electrical field integral equation (EFIE) and the method of moments (MoM). Two models are generated for each polyhedron, a wire grid model and a triangular patch model. Two numerical codes associated with those modelling techniques are used to obtain the radar cross section (RCS) of the polyhedrons. The calculated results are compared with the analytical results of the scattering of a perfectly conducting sphere. Practical criteria relating geometric properties of the sphere and the polyhedrons are investigated for the modelling of curved surfaces by facets in electromagnetic simulations.

Notizen: An analysis of arbitrary thin-wire loop antennas and scatterers using periodic orthogonal wavelets is presented. The periodic orthogonal wavelet expansion is applied to solve the thin-wire version of the electric-field integral equation (EFIE). The curved solution domains are mapped into the definition domain [0, 1] of the periodic wavelets. The unknown current over each loop wire is expanded in terms of a basis derived from a periodic orthogonal wavelet through the maps between the curved integration domains and the interval [0,1]. The integral equation under study is converted into a sparse matrix equation by this technique. Numerical examples are provided for a variety of thin-wire loop antennas and scatterers. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: An FFT-based formulation for the computation of electromagnetic scattering from 3-D, perfectly conducting objects is presented. The formulation solves the EFIE iteratively via a conjugate gradient scheme and has the major advantage of a low storage requirement for scatterers in the resonance region. This factor, coupled with the low run-times resulting from use of the FFT to compute the associated matrices, makes the formulation a particularly efficient one. Numerical results encompassing current distributions and far-field radar cross-sections are presented for PEC cubes of resonant size. It is shown that the computed results yield good agreement compared with other numerical techniques and experimental data.

Notizen: In the paper a novel finite-integration beam-propagation method (FIBPM) is presented. This method is especially suited for the simulation of optical waveguides containing extremely thin layers of complex permittivity. For calculating the propagating optical field an efficient algorithm based on expansion of the matrix exponential in Chebyshev polynomials is applied. The derivation of the propagation algorithm is given, also detailing the convergence criteria. A code for a massively parallel computer has been developed and applied successfully to complex waveguide structures used for high-power laser diodes

Notizen: In this paper, a finite element method for solving ionized fields is developed based on a novel solution philosophy. Employing the Galerkin finite element method, the solution problem of an ionized field has been formulated as an optimization problem, i.e. as a problem of minimizing an objective function whose minimum gives the solution. Notizen: The circuit and coupling properties of a dipole grid array placed inside a rectangular cross-section waveguide are analysed when also a rectangular aperture is used to couple the resonator energy into a semi-infinite waveguide. A Green function approach is employed to determine the current distribution on the dipole elements by solving an integral equation and taking into account the boundary conditions on the rectangular cavity walls. Both mutual and self-impedance terms are calculated for the dipole grid array, and the effects of the rectangular coupling aperture are also examined. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: Recurrence relations are developed to determine the weighting coefficients used in the simulation of random signals and rough surfaces with given statistical characteristics. These results can provide (in real time) straightforward, accurate solutions to the system of non-linear, algebraic equations associated with the method of moving summations. Three possible numerical methods have been reported to obtain approximate solutions to the system of non-linear, algebraic equations. However, none of them is straightforward, and they all require a large amount of computing time. This work can be applied to the numerical solution of the generalized telegraphist's equations used to analyze vertically and horizontally polarized radio wave scattering problems from permeable media with random rough interfaces. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: This paper presents a multigrid method for numerically solving the coupled Poisson-Schrödinger equations in one dimension for a multilayered HEMT device structure. It is shown that this method produces a good speed-up factor over the non-multigrid approach. This should make it suitable for incorporating into the two-dimensional HEMT model involving coupled Poisson, Schrödinger, current continuity and energy transport equations, with the Schrödinger equation being solved in slices perpendicular to the layer structure. The time taken to produce a multigrid solution depends on the size of the coarse grid and on the number of grids used. A method of predicting the time taken for any combination of these values is presented. The method is demonstrated for a 4-layer device. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: This paper describes a modelling strategy and a software tool for simulating the dynamical behaviour of an active antenna array. The array consists of active radiating elements placed in a chain, i.e. a collinear array arrangement. To assist modelling of the active antenna array a macro model has been used to represent each of the radiating elements in the array. This simplifies analysis and allows dynamical performance to be efficiently computed, the resulting dynamical behaviour of the array being presented as an animated visualization. A computer program is presented which can simulate the active array in the time domain so that various characteristics, such as mode formation and spacial coupling effects, can be observed. Experimental validation is given in order to justify the mode formation predictions of the simulator. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notizen: A new insight into the numerical properties of the mode-matching (MM) technique is given at the example of capacitive and inductive diaphragms in rectangular waveguide. The presence of two sources of error is pointed out and the existence is demonstrated of an optimum modal ratio which produces the best compensation between the two errors. The MM technique is formulated in a generalized form as an integral equation for either the electric field on the aperture or the current on the diaphragm. This allows the edge condition to be incorporated into the basis functions in order to improve the numerical efficiency of the method. An extensive investigation of the numerical properties of the various formulations in different cases is presented, including the frequency behaviour of the numerical error.

Notizen: Two different formulations of the transverse resonance field-matching technique are applied to evaluate the modal spectrum of metal-finned waveguide structures. In the theoretical treatment, Method 1 uses boundary conditions prior to interface relations and allows the number of expansion terms to be selected according to the dimensions of the cross-section subregions. Method 2 imposes boundary and interface conditions in reversed order but requires the same number of expansion terms to be used in various subregions. The two procedures are then compared with respect to their influence on the modal scattering matrix computation of metal-finned waveguide resonators. Method 2 shows excellent agreement with measurements, but it is restricted to configurations with relatively thin fins and moderate slot widths. Although Method 1 may be applied to more general structures, this procedure requires a higher computational effort and leads to slightly different results. However, it constitutes a powerful PC-operational alternative whenever an extended precision compiler, as required for Method 2, is not available.

Notizen: This paper illustrates how problems based on the Probabilistic Potential Method can be solved using a parallelized form of the Exodus Monte Carlo technique. The Exodus technique which does not use random number generation is shown to be more efficient for moderately large problems than the conventional fixed random walk method when programmed in both sequential and concurrent forms. The technique is illustrated for an electrostatic field problem by using as an example internal potential evaluation for a rectangular coaxial line. The problem geometry is torn into subsections which are then analysed independently using concurrent programming methods. The resulting algorithm is compared with the same problem executed using a conventional sequential algorithm. Computation is achieved by use of an array of transputers. The design of the concurrent algorithm is described in detail and typical results are compared with the fixed random walk Monte Carlo method and also with the finite difference relaxation method. Parallel Fortran is used throughout as the programming language.

Notizen: A new GaAs carrier transport modelling methodology is presented, designed to address the competing needs of microscopic detail and of computational efficiency. The rationale for advanced semiclassical models based on the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) are reviewed and discussed in terms of the unique properties of GaAs. A new methodology is then presented, formulated around a one-dimensional velocity-space variable. It includes a realistic description of the GaAs band structure including multiple valleys, non-parabolicity, and anisotropy, which is used to explicitly evaluate the scattering distributions, and rates, for different scattering mechanisms. These in turn allow a direct evaluation of the BTE scattering inegral, which is solved iteratively with the non-scattering terms. Based on this methodology, a prototype model is shown to reproduce the GaAs velocity-field relationship in homogeneous, undoped material. Band structure and forward-scattering effects are clearly visible in the model's solutions for the carrier velocity distribution. The model's computational simplicity, combined with a finer level of detail, makes it suitable for device simulation without invoking Monte Carlo or other computationally intensive methods.

Notizen: An overview is given on the application of finite difference time-domain analysis techniques to the simulation of electromagnetic wave phenomena and the design of planar microwave integrated circuits. In particular the application to the analysis of three-dimensional discontinuities in coplanar microwave circuits is described and numerical and experimental results are presented. Finally the design of planar microwave circuits containing non-linear active components using the finite difference time-domain method in combination with a harmonic balance technique is demonstrated using an example of a LUFET circuit.
