    Beschreibung: The use of a high-speed optical interconnect in the control of a Ka-band GaAs monolithic phase shifter is described. A 16-b serial control signal was used to modulate the output of a laser transmitter, and the transmitted optical signal was detected and demultiplexed into 16 parallel electrical outputs using a high-speed hybrid GaAs optoelectronic integrated circuit. Four of the parallel output lines were interfaced to the 4-b phase shifter, and high-speed, optically controlled switching of the phase shifter was observed at clock frequencies to 30 MHz using an interferometric technique.

    Beschreibung: A study of dc modulation noise as a function of magnetic layer thickness has been conducted for plated longitudinal low-noise Co-alloy disk media with a range of 900 to 1100 Oe. The noise, produced by the application of a reverse longitudinal dc field to a uniformly magnetized disk, supplies data regarding the uniformity of the disk. A spectrum analyzer measures the noise by means of electronic detection, and noise spectra and autocorrelation functions calculated with a model are compared to the experimental results. The model correlates with experimental data to more than 0.99. The maximum distance between effective transitions diminishes from 2.8 microns to 1 micron when the thickness of the magnetic layer is increased from 25 nm to 60 nm. The maximum average transition amplitude is found to be independent of thickness, and is bounded by 0.001 of the saturation magnetization.

    Beschreibung: The design and performance of the first traveling-wave tube (TWT) to be built with a phase-adjusted taper (PAT) is discussed. By adjusting the phase of the electron bunch with respect to the RF wave for strong electron bunch formation at the beginning of the taper and strong power conversion at the end, the PAT achieves a high efficiency of power conversion from the electron beam to the RF wave. A PAT incorporated into the output section of a baseline 29-30 GHz ferruleless coupled-cavity TWT experimentally increased the peak RF power from 420 to 1000 W and the peak RF interaction efficiency from 9.6 to 22.6 percent.

    Beschreibung: Current research projects conducted at the JPL Center for Space Microelectronics Technology are briefly reviewed. These include the development of a new miniature tunneling Goday cell that can be made into arrays. This tunneling IR detector is sensitive to radiation through the infrared and is particularly suited to room temperature measurements of the mid to far infrared. Other developments include ballistic-electron-emission microscopy, a next-generation spacecraft on-board computer using the Direct Memory Access Co-Processor, a 1-sq cm custom chip with 40,000 transistors, new neural network chips, the third-generation hypercube, and a new Hyperswitch Adaptive Message routing VLSI chip.

    Beschreibung: Findings from NASA's space electronics division's (SED's) advanced systems studies related to future communications satellite services that will require onboard switching and processing technology are reviewed. SED's digital signal switching and processing technology program is reviewed. This program responds to specific systems technology development needs for enabling commercial development of future satellite services. The technologies include: modulators, demodulators, and forward error-correction hardware for space- and ground-based applications; onboard information switching and processing, onboard network control, and health monitoring; and cost-efficient ground terminals. The in-house systems integration, test, and evaluation (SITE) project, which includes a laboratory testbed for evaluating technology in a simulated systems environment, is reviewed.

    Beschreibung: Phase-noise measurements are presented for a microwave oscillator whose frequency is stabilized by a whispering-gallery sapphire ring resonator with Q of 200,000. This mode involves little metallic conduction and allows nearly full use of the very low dielectric loss in sapphire. Several mode families have been identified, in good agreement with frequency calculations. For a 5-cm wheel resonator in a 7.6-cm container, Q values above 100,000 were found at room temperature for all of the modes in this sequence. Coupling Q-values for these same modes ranged from 10,000 (n = 5) to 100,000 (n = 10) for a WR112 waveguide port at the center of the cylinder wall of the containing can. Phase noise measurements for a transistor oscillator locked to the n = 10 (7.84-GHz) mode showed a 1/f cubed dependence for low offset frequencies, and a value of L(f) = -55 dB/Hz at an offset of 10 Hz from the carrier.

    Beschreibung: Traditional circuit analysis defines the power gain of an oscillator to be finite, since there is an output without an input. By defining power gain as the ratio of output power to input power, however, finite power gain can be characterized.     Beschreibung: The characteristics of various detector responses are studied to understand the cause of various systematic biases and to minimize these undesirable effects in measurements of transient signals with large dynamic range. Signal-induced bias, gain variation, and the linearity of commonly used gated photomultipliers in the current integrating mode are quantitatively evaluated. Analysis of the results indicates that impurity ions inside the photomultiplier tubes (PMT) are the source of the signal induced bias and gain variation. Two different PMTs used in this study show significant differences in the magnitude and decay behavior of signal-induced bias. It was found that it can be minimized by using an external amplifier to reduce PMT gain, and by applying a low potential between the cathode and first dynode. The linearity of a PMT is also studied over a large dynamic range of input intensities employing a new technique which does not require an absolute calibration. The result of this study shows that the photomultiplier response is linear only for a limited input intensity range below a certain anode current.

    Beschreibung: The architecture, design, and operational characteristics of custom VLSI and thin film synaptic devices are described. The devices include CMOS-based synaptic chips containing 1024 reprogrammable synapses with a 6-bit dynamic range, and nonvolatile, write-once, binary synaptic arrays based on memory switching in hydrogenated amorphous silicon films. Their suitability for embodiment of fully parallel and analog neural hardware is discussed. Specifically, a neural network solution to an assignment problem of combinatorial global optimization, implemented in fully parallel hardware using the synaptic chips, is described. The network's ability to provide optimal and near optimal solutions over a time scale of few neuron time constants has been demonstrated and suggests a speedup improvement of several orders of magnitude over conventional search methods.

    Beschreibung: Dielectric constants of microwave substrates are required in the design of superconducting microwave circuits at various temperatures. In this paper, the results are reported of a study of the complex permittivity of the newly developed lanthanum aluminate (LaAlO3) substrate, in the 20 to 300 K temperature range at frequencies from 26.5 to 40.0 GHz. The value of the complex permittivity was obtained by measuring the sample scattering parameters using a microwave waveguide technique. It is observed that, while the dielectric constant did not change appreciably with frequency, its value decreased by approximately 14 percent from room temperature to 20 K.

    Beschreibung: A technique called micro rollback, which allows most of the performance penalty for concurrent error detection to be eliminated, is presented. Detection is performed in parallel with the transmission of information between modules, thus removing the delay for detection from the critical path. Erroneous information may thus reach its destination module several clock cycles before an error indication. Operations performed on this erroneous information are undone using a hardware mechanism for fast rollback of a few cycles. The implementation of a VLSI processor capable of micro rollback is discussed, as well as several critical issues related to its use in a complete system.

    Beschreibung: Approximate analytical models of the transmission-line tap resistor and the cross-Kelvin resistor are compared with computer-simulated pseudo-three-dimensional resistor network models. The analytical formulas are in good agreement with the simulations over a useful range of parameters and are readily applied to the extraction of the contact resistivity and the sheet resistances of the semiconducting layer under and outside the contacts. The extraction procedure, which is easily implemented on a personal computer, is carried out for the case of alloyed AuGeNi/GaAs contacts, illustrating the importance of (1) distinguishing between layer sheet resistance under and outside the contacts and (2) considering two-dimensional current flow in the semiconducting layer.

    Beschreibung: An array processing chip integrating 128 bit-serial processing elements (PEs) on a single die is discussed. Each PE has a 16-function logic unit, a single-bit adder, a 32-b variable-length shift register, and 1 kb of local RAM. Logic in each PE provides the capability to mask PEs individually. A modified grid interconnection scheme allows each PE to communicate with each of its eight nearest neighbors. A 32-b bus is used to transfer data to and from the array in a single cycle. Instruction execution is pipelined, enabling all instructions to be executed in a single cycle. The 1-micron CMOS design contains over 1.1 x 10 to the 6th transistors on an 11.0 x 11.7-mm die.

    Beschreibung: The fabrication and performance of WO3-based, solid-state, three-terminal device configurations as programmable analog memory elements are reported. These transistorlike device structures exhibit good resistance progammability with a remarkable resolution of a few percent of the resistive strength over a four orders of magnitude dynamic range. The most critical component of these devices is an insulating layer between the active WO3 and the cation donor layer. The progamming characteristics and operation mechanisms of the device are described, and probable reaction mechanisms critical to the device stability are discussed.

    Beschreibung: A voltage-controlled 8415-MHz FET oscillator stabilized by a dielectric resonator is described. The oscillator provides over 3.2-MHz linear electronic tuning range with a flat power output equal to +1.8 dBm (27 C, nominal), a single-sideband noise-to-carrier ratio of -68 dBc/Hz at 1 kHz off carrier, and a frequency-temperature coefficient of 0.54 parts per million/C over a -24 C to 75 C range. The oscillator withstood 150 Krads (Si) of gamma radiation with no significant performance degradation. The overall performance of the FET oscillator is far superior in many ways to that of an equivalent bipolar oscillator for space applications. For space applications, the FET dielectric resonator oscillator (DRO) is preferred over bipolar DRO because of its lower DC power consumption, better thermal frequency stability, linear electronic tunability, and higher RF output power capability.

    Beschreibung: A thin-film high-Tc superconducting multielement optical detector made of Y-Ba-Cu-O has been designed and evaluated using optical pulses from a diode laser (830 nm) and a Q-switched CO2-laser (10.6 microns). Different thin films have been tested. A laser deposited film showed the strongest response amplitude for short pulses and responded to an ultrafast, 50 ps wide pulse. Comparisons between dR/dT and response as a function of temperature indicated, however, a bolometric response.

    Beschreibung: Epitaxial YBa2Cu3O7 films were grown on several microwave substrates. Surface resistance and penetration depth measurements were performed to determine the quality of these films. Here, the properties of these films on key microwave substrates are described. The fabrication and characterization of a microwave ring resonator circuit to determine transmission line losses are presented. Lower losses than those observed in gold resonator circuits were observed at temperatures lower than critical transition temperature. Based on these results, potential applications of microwave superconducting circuits such as filters, resonators, oscillators, phase shifters, and antenna elements in space communication systems are identified.

The key concept, that the DPLL closed-loop transfer function is decomposed into an estimator and a predictor, is discussed. The estimator provides recursive estimates of phase, frequency, and higher-order derivatives, and the predictor compensates for the transport lag inherent in the loop.

    Beschreibung: Small-area (1x1 sq micron) high-current-density NbN-MgO-NbN tunnel junctions with I-V characteristics suitable for high frequency mixers were fabricated. These junctions are integrated with superconducting microstrip lines designed to resonate out the large junction capacitance. The mixer gain and noise performance were studied near 205 GHz as a function of the inductance provided by the microstrip. This has yielded values of junction capacitance of 85 fF/sq microns and magnetic penetration depth of 3800 angstroms. Mixer noise as low as 133 K has been obtained for properly tuned junctions. This is the best noise performance ever reported for an NbN SIS mixer.

    Beschreibung: The basic principles of microwave fiber-optic systems are outlined with emphasis on fiber-optic cable delay compensators (CDC). Degradation of frequency and phase stability is considered, and it is pointed out that the long-term stability of a fiber-optic link is degraded by group delay variations due to temperature fluctuations in the optical fiber and low-frequency noise characteristics of the laser. A CDC employing a voltage-controlled oscillator to correct for phase variations in the optical fiber is presented, and the static as well as dynamic closed-loop analyses of the fiber-optic CDC are discussed. A constructed narrow-band fiber-optic CDC is shown to reduce phase variations caused by temperature fluctuations by a factor of 400. A wide-band CDC utilizing a temperature-controlled coil of fiber to compensate for phase delay is also proposed.

    Beschreibung: In this paper a fast and straightforward waveguide measurement technique is described for the determination of the dielectric constant and loss tangent of many commercially available materials. These dielectric materials include Cuflon, Teflon, Arlon's polyimides, Lockheed's ceramic foams, and Rogers Duroid materials. The effective dielectric constant and loss tangent of Hexsel's honeycomb material is also measured by this method and is compared to the predicted data obtained using the volume averaging theory. The accuracy and other features of this measurement technique are also discussed.

    Beschreibung: A rapid thermal annealing (RTA) process in pure N2 or pure H2 was developed for ion-implanted and encapsulated indium phosphide compound semiconductors, and the chemical nature at the silicon nitride-InP interface before and after RTA was examined using XPS. Results obtained from SIMS on the atomic concentration profiles of the implanted silicon in InP before and after RTA are presented, together with electrical characteristics of the annealed implants. Using the RTA process developed, InP metal-insulator semiconductor FETs (MISFETS) were fabricated. The MISFETS prepared had threshold voltages of +1 V, transconductance of 27 mS/mm, peak channel mobility of 1200 sq cm/V per sec, and drain current drift of only 7 percent.

    Beschreibung: Effective permitivity and loss characteristics of gold microstrip lines on GaAs substrates were obtained by characterizing GaAs linear resonators at cryogenic temperatures (300 to 20 K) from 30-40 GHz. A slight decrease in effective permittivity and a significant reduction in loss were observed with lower temperatures.

    Beschreibung: This paper describes the design and operation of a prototype high-voltage full-floating high-frequency square-wave generator which is an improved version of the generator developed by Bernius and Chutjian (1989). The present design overcomes possible momentary simultaneous ON states in the MOSFET configuration and is less susceptible to deleterious effects caused by the component aging and replacements with nonidentical parts. The circuit performs well over a wide voltage and frequency range, until a limit is imposed by the operating characteristics of the active MOSFET elements. Circuit diagrams are presented.

    Beschreibung: Auger, ESCA, electron emission, evaporation, and desorption measurements were made on three different types of scandate surfaces. They are: (1) an impregnated top layer scandate cathode, (2) an unimpregnated top layer scandate cathode with a deposited barium or barium oxide adsorbate surface layer, and (3) a synthesized scandate surface, which replicates a scandate cathode surface. The purpose of these experiments was to determine the role that Sc2O3 plays in making the scandate cathode a more copious electron emitter than the conventional impregnated-type cathode. The synthesized scandate surface experiments consisted of depositing multilayer scandium on a tungsten surface, oxidizing the scandium, and then depositing either Ba or BaO on the scandium oxide surface. The results of these measurements showed that the low work function portions of the thin-film scandate cathode are where the Sc2O3 is the substrate and BaO is the adsorbate.

    Beschreibung: The interaction between a dielectric resonator and a microstrip transmission line is fundamentally a field phenomenon. However, the model of Figure 1b widely is used to represent the arrangement in Figure 1a, and predicts the behavior encountered in practice. The microstrip line of length l = n(lambda)/4 between the input and coupling planes and the lambda/4 open-circuit stub usually is assumed to be lossless. This paper considers the effect of coupling line loss on the unloaded-Q and coupling coefficient beta of the combination. It shows that transmission line loss can cause the decrease in unloaded-Q that has been observed to occur with tight coupling, and limits the coupling coefficient to a much lower value than would be obtained with a lossless coupling line.

    Beschreibung: Infrared radiation at wavelengths of 1-2 microns has been detected in a new device labeled the layered internal photoemission sensor. The device structure, which is grown by molecular beam epitaxy, incorporates epitaxial CoSi2 particles with dimensions of 10-50 nm. Radiation absorbed by these particles photoexcites carriers into a surrounding single-crystal silicon matrix. A peak quantum efficiency of 1.3 percent is measured, which is approximately six times higher than in planar CoSi2 Schottky diodes with 5-nm silicide thickness.

    Beschreibung: The feasibility of a novel p(+)-Si(1-x)Ge(x)-p-Si heterojunction internal photoemission (HIP) IR detector is demonstrated. A degenerately doped p(x)-Si(1-x)Ge(x) layer is required for strong IR absorption to generate photoexcited holes. The Si(1-x)Ge(x) layers are grown by molecular beam epitaxy, with boron concentrations up to 10 to the 20th/cu cm achieved by using an HBO2 source. Photoresponse at wavelengths ranging from 2 to 10 microns has been obtained with quantum efficiencies above 1 percent. The tailorable cutoff wavelength of the HIP detector has been demonstrated by varying the Ge composition ratio in the Si(1-x)Ge(x) layers.

    Beschreibung: The increasing load density in the LC-39 area of Kennedy Space Center (KSC) can be met by either modifying the existing substation and increasing its capacity or by planning an additional new substation. Evidence that the later approach is more economical, enhances the system reliability, and would produce more satisfactory performance indices is provided. Network theory is the basis for the optimal location determination of the proposed substation. A load reallocation plan which minimizes investment cost and power losses and meets other desirable system features is drafted. The report should be useful to the system designer and can be a useful guideline for future facility planners.

    Beschreibung: The discovery of high temperature superconductor oxides has raised the possibility of a new class of millimeter and microwave devices operating at temperatures considerably higher than liquid helium temperatures. Therefore, materials properties such as conductivity, current density, and sheet resistance as a function of temperature and frequency, possible anisotropies, moisture absorption, thermal expansion, and others, have to be well characterized and understood. The millimeter wave response was studied of laser ablated YBa2Cu3O(7-x)/LaAlO3 thin films as a function of temperature and frequency. In particular, the evaluation of their microwave conductivity was emphasized, since knowledge of this parameter provides a basis for the derivation of other relevant properties of these superconducting oxides, and for using them in the fabrication of actual passive circuits. The microwave conductivity for these films was measured at frequencies from 26.5 to 40.0 GHz, in the temperature range from 20 to 300 K. The values of the conductivity are obtained from the millimeter wave power transmitted through the films, using a two fluid model.

    Beschreibung: A series of YBa2Cu(3-x)MxO(7-y) (M=Al,Zn and Sn) single phase samples were prepared, and the measurements of the crystal structure, oxygen content, electric resistivity, thermoelectric power, Mossbauer spectrum, XPS and superconductivity were performed. The experimental results of X ray powder diffraction, Mossbauer spectrum and oxygen content show that the Zn(2+) and the Al(3+) occupy the Cu(2) site in Cu-O planes and the Cu(1) site in Cu-O chains respectively, but the Sn(4+) occupies both the Cu(1) sites. As regards the properties in superconducting state, both the Zn(2+) and the Al(3+) depress T(sub c) strongly, but the Sn(4+) does not. As for the electronic transport properties in normal state, the system doped by Al(3+) displays a rapid increase of resistivity and some electron localization-like effects, and the thermoelectric power enhances obviously; the series contained Zn(2+) almost shows no changes of electric resistivity but the sign of the thermoelectric power is reversed. Other results are given and briefly discussed.

    Beschreibung: Simoncelli and Adelson have extended the one dimensional Quadrature Mirror Filter (QMF) to two dimensions with hexagon symmetry and three dimensional spatio-temporal extensions with rhombic-duodecahedray symmetry. Jain and Crochiere presented an excellent QMF design technique in the time domain. It is proposed to extend the design of a two dimensional QMF over a rectangular lattice in the spatial domain based primarily on the extension of the idea of Jain and Crochiere. In addition, the design will investigate the use of two dimensional Z-transformations. Since this proposed QMF is intended for the applications in image processing, all the important and interesting engineering issues will be addressed throughout the development phase. The design of a two dimensional QMF is discussed. The motivation is to achieve an extremely high data compression ratio. It is entirely possible to achieve dramatic results when pattern recognition techniques are employed. The final goal is the demonstration of extremely high data compression ratios using NASA pictures.

Each valve is an electron controlling structure similiar to a vacuum tube that is operated without a vacuum sustaining envelope. The natural vacuum electron valves discussed offer a viable substitute for solid state devices. The natural vacuum valve is highly resistant to ionizing radiation, system generated electromagnetic pulse, current transients, and direct exposure to space conditions.

    Beschreibung: For space flight hardware, the thermal vacuum environmental test is the best test of a system's flight worthiness. Substituting an atmospheric pressure thermal test for a thermal/vacuum test can effectively reduce piece part temperatures by 20 C or more, even for low power density designs. Similar reductions in test effectiveness can also result from improper assembly level T/V test boundary conditions. The net result of these changes may reduce the effective test temperatures to the point where there is zero or negative margin over the flight thermal environment.

    Beschreibung: A VLSI architecture for synchronous sequential controllers is presented that has attractive qualities for producing reliable circuits. In these circuits, one hardware implementation can realize any flow table with a maximum of 2(exp n) internal states and m inputs. Also all design equations are identical. A real time fault detection means is presented along with a strategy for verifying the correctness of the checking hardware. This self check feature can be employed with no increase in hardware. The architecture can be modified to achieve fail safe designs. With no increase in hardware, an adaptable circuit can be realized that allows replacement of faulty transitions with fault free transitions.

    Beschreibung: The importance of Cosmic Rays on the performance of integrated circuits (IC's) in a space environment is evident in the upset rate of the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS) launched in Apr. 1983. This satellite experiences a single-event-upset (SEU) per day which must be corrected from the ground. Such experience caused a redesign of the Galileo spacecraft with SEU resistant IC's. The solution to the SEU problem continues to be important as the complexity of spacecraft grows, the feature size of IC's decreases, and as space systems are designed with circuits fabricated at non-radiation hardened foundries. This paper describes an approach for verifying the susceptibility of CMOS latches to heavy-ion induced state changes. The approach utilizes alpha particles to induce the upsets in test circuits. These test circuits are standard cells that have offset voltages which sensitize the circuits to upsets. These results are then used to calculate the upsetability at operating voltages. In this study results are presented for the alpha particle upset of a six-transistor static random access memory (SRAM) cell. Then a methodology is described for the analysis of a standard-cell inverter latch.

    Beschreibung: Minimal test sets have the property that each input vector simultaneously tests several faults in a network. Existing techniques to determine a minimal set of detection tests rely heavily on complicated algebraic techniques. In this paper, two new methods are presented which do not require Boolean algebra or Karnaugh maps. The first is a graphical approach using fault folding graphs. The second is a design by inspection technique. This work follows the unique approach of first finding all the faults that can be detected by a single test. This tremendously reduces the work required to determine a minimal test set. The design by inspection method could be automated for programmatic generation of minimal stuck-at fault tests.

The chip features a pin selectable interleave depth of 1 to 8. Block lengths of up to 255 bytes, as well as shortened codes, are supported. The control circuitry uses register cells which are immune to Single Event Upset. In addition, the CMOS process used is reported to be tolerant of over 1 Mrad total dose radiation.

    Beschreibung: A simple physical model for the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is presented. This model explains the one dimensional and two dimensional nature of the received SAR signal in the range and azimuth directions. A time domain correlator, its algorithm, and features are explained. The correlator is ideally suited for VLSI implementation. A real time SAR architecture using these correlators is proposed. In the proposed architecture, the received SAR data is processed using one dimensional correlators for determining the range while two dimensional correlators are used to determine the azimuth of a target. The architecture uses only three different types of custom VLSI chips and a small amount of memory.

    Beschreibung: For over a decade NASA LeRC has been defining, demonstrating, and evaluating power electronic components and multi-kilowatt, multiply redundant, electrical power systems as part of OAST charter. Whether one considers aircraft (commercial transport/military), Space Station Freedom, growth station, launch vehicles, or the new Human Exploration Initiative, the conclusions remain the same: high frequency AC power distribution and control is superior to all other approaches for achieving a fast, smart, safe, versatile, and growable electrical power system that will meet a wide range of mission options. To meet the cost and operability goals of future aerospace missions that require significantly higher electrical power and longer durations, we must learn to integrate multiple technologies in ways that enhance overall system synergisms. The way NASA is doing business in space electric power is challenged and some approaches for evolving large space vehicles and platforms in well constructed steps to provide safe, ground testable, growable, smart systems that provide simple, replicative logic structures, which enable hardware and software verification, validation, and implementation are proposed.     Beschreibung: The work which built-in test (BIT) is asked to perform in today's electronic systems increases with every insertion of new technology or introduction of tighter performance criteria. Yet the basic purpose remains unchanged -- to determine with high confidence the operational capability of that equipment. Achievement of this level of BIT performance requires the management and assimilation of a large amount of data, both realtime and historical. Smart BIT has taken advantage of advanced techniques from the field of artificial intelligence (AI) in order to meet these demands. The Smart BIT approach enhances traditional functional BIT by utilizing AI techniques to incorporate environmental stress data, temporal BIT information and maintenance data, and realtime BIT reports into an integrated test methodology for increased BIT effectiveness and confidence levels. Future research in this area will incorporate onboard fault-logging of BIT output, stress data and Smart BIT decision criteria in support of a singular, integrated and complete test and maintenance capability. The state of this research is described along with a discussion of directions for future development.

    Beschreibung: This work was done to optimize the design of the components used for the beam power supply, which is a component of the transmitters in the Deep Space Network (DSN). The major findings are: (1) the difference in regulation between a six-pulse and a twelve-pulse converter is at most 7 percent worse for the twelve-pulse converter; (2) the commutation overlap angle of a current source converter equals that of a voltage source converter with continuous line currents; (3) the sources of uncharacteristic harmonics are identified with SPICE simulation; (4) the use of an imperfect phase-shifting transformer for the twelve-pulse converter generates a harmonic at six times the line frequency; and (5) the assumptions usually made in analyzing converters can be relaxed with SPICE simulation. The results demonstrate the suitability of using SPICE simulation to obtain detailed performance predictions of ac-to-dc converters.

    Beschreibung: The interaction of strontium films with the underlaying Si (100) surface and the Sr-promoted low-temperature oxidation of Si were investigated, using XPS, at three different Sr coverages (theta): theta = 0.55 monolayer (ML), theta = 1 ML, and theta = 1.85 ML. Oxygen adsorption was studied both at room temperature and at 500 C, and at oxygen exposures up to 2 x 10 to the 6th L (1 L = 10 to the -6th torr) and 2 x 10 to the 5th L, respectively. The XPS spectra of the Si2p, O1s, and Sr3d core levels were measured for the atomically clean Si, the Sr-covered Si, and for the Sr-covered Si after each oxygen exposure. Results indicate that Sr interacts with the Si(100) surface forming a strong ionic bond, and that Sr promotes the oxidation of the Si (100) surface.

    Beschreibung: In a graded junction, the formalism for handling reflecting boundary conditions must be modified. Since a significant drift term is present, zero recombination velocity at the surface does not imply a zero excess carrier gradient but rather zero overall flux. A model for analyzing p-n junctions fabricated by implantation or diffusion is presented, assuming the dominant recombination mechanism in the graded region is Auger. The model enables optimization of diode design. By proper selection of parameters, mainly by reducing surface concentration or by increasing the steepness of the dopant profile, it is possible to drastically reduce the saturation current generated by the graded region.

    Beschreibung: Coherent mixing of optical radiation from a tunable continuous-wave dye laser and a stabilized He-Ne laser was used to generate millimeter-wave signals in GaAs FETs attached to printed-circuit millimeter-wave antennas. The generated signal was further down-converted to a 2-GHz IF by an antenna-coupled millimeter-wave local oscillator at 62 GHz. Detailed characterizations of power and S/N under different bias conditions have been performed. This technique is expected to allow signal generation and frequency-response evaluation of millimeter-wave devices at frequencies as high as 100 GHz.

    Beschreibung: A review of various methods of phase and frequency synchronization of active MMIC based transmit/receive modules is presented, and particular emphasis is placed on the synchronization of oscillators through the use of an indirect subharmonic optical injection locking technique. In this approach, the nonlinear behavior of large-signal modulated laser diodes and solid-state oscillators is exploited to extend the bandwidth of the synchronizing link to the millimeter-wave frequency range. Experimental results of the phase and frequency coherency of two 21.5 GHz FET oscillators are reported. Optimum performance is achieved at a subharmonic factor of 1/4, with a locking range of 84 MHz and a phase noise degradation of only 14 dB. The phase coherency measurement of two injection-locked oscillators points to a phase shift, which is introduced as a result of the frequency detuning between the slave and master oscillator signals. A scheme to correct for this phase error is presented.

    Beschreibung: A novel nonplanar, wideband power divider which makes use of a coax-to-CCPW transition is demonstrated. The transition utilizes a coaxial transformer whose outer conductor is slotted along the length for RF power division and also for exciting the CCPWs in equal amplitude and phase at the radial junction. The measured (8-16 GHz) excess insertion loss at the output ports is 0.5 dB for a four-way divider. The amplitude and phase balance are within 0.5 dB and 5 deg, respectively. The power divider should find applications in the feed network of phased arrays.

    Beschreibung: A bench-level test is being developed to evaluate memory-cell upsets in a test SRAM designed with a cell offset voltage. This offset voltage controls the critical charge needed to upset the cell. The effect is demonstrated using a specially designed 2-micron n-well CMOS 4-kb test SRAM and a Po-208 5.1-MeV 0.61-LET alpha-particle source. This test SRAM has been made sensitive to alpha particles through the use of a cell offset voltage, and this has allowed a bench-level characterization in a laboratory setting. The experimental data are linked to a alpha-particle interaction physics and to SPICE circuit simulations through the alpha-particle collection depth. The collection depth is determined by two methods and found to be about 7 micron. In addition, alpha particles that struck outside the bloated drain were able to flip the SRAM cells. This lateral charge collection was observed to be more than 6 micron.

    Beschreibung: The results of single-event upset (SEU) testing performed to evaluate the parametric transients, i.e., amplitude and duration, in several I/O devices, and the impact of these transients are discussed. The failure rate of these devices is dependent on the susceptibility of interconnected devices to the resulting transient change in the output of the I/O device. This failure rate, which is a function of the susceptibility of the interconnected device as well as the SEU response of the I/O device itself, may be significantly different from an upset rate calculated without taking these factors into account. The impact at the system level is discussed by way of an example.

    Beschreibung: Multiple-bit errors caused by single-ion tracks in a 256-kb DRAM fabricated by a bulk process were observed for different ion species and stopping power values. The results demonstrate the utility of this device for the evaluation of ion-beam uniformity and ion-beam-induced charge collection in IC devices. The data indicate that single-ion-induced charge transport results in multiple-bit error clusters due to lateral diffusion of excess minority carriers (electrons). Charge collection occurred from a depth of up to 35 microns from the surface of the device. An apparent charge loss was observed for very heavy ions with a high stopping power (Au at 350 MeV).

    Beschreibung: Phasors representing positive sequence voltages and currents in a power network are in the most important parameters in several monitoring, control, and protection functions in interconnected electric power networks. Recent advances in computer relaying have led to very efficient and accurate phasor measurement systems. When the phasors to be measured are separated by hundreds of miles, it becomes necessary to synchronize the measurement processes, so that a consistent description of the state of the power system can be established. Global Positioning System (GPS) transmissions offer an ideal source for synchronization of phasor measurements. The concept and implementation of this technique are described. Several uses of synchronized phasor measurements are also described. Among these are improved state estimation algorithms, state estimator enhancements, dynamic state estimates, improved control techniques, and improved protection concepts.

    Beschreibung: The Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) has successfully operated an in-house developed powerline fault locator system since 1986. The BPA fault locator system consists of remotes installed at cardinal power transmission line system nodes and a central master which polls the remotes for traveling wave time-of-arrival data. A power line fault produces a fast rise-time traveling wave which emanates from the fault point and propagates throughout the power grid. The remotes time-tag the traveling wave leading edge as it passes through the power system cardinal substation nodes. A synchronizing pulse transmitted via the BPA analog microwave system on a wideband channel sychronizes the time-tagging counters in the remote units to a different accuracy of better than one microsecond. The remote units correct the raw time tags for synchronizing pulse propagation delay and return these corrected values to the fault locator master. The master then calculates the power system disturbance source using the collected time tags. The system design objective is a fault location accuracy of 300 meters. BPA's fault locator system operation, error producing phenomena, and method of distributing precise timing are described.

    Beschreibung: A discussion of the LMS adaptive filter relating to its convergence characteristics and the problems associated with disparate eigenvalues is presented. This is used to introduce the concept of proportional convergence. An approach is used to analyze the convergence characteristics of block frequency-domain adaptive filters. This leads to a development showing how the frequency-domain FIR adaptive filter is easily modified to provide proportional convergence. These ideas are extended to a block frequency-domain IIR adaptive filter and the idea of proportional convergence is applied. Experimental results illustrating proportional convergence in both FIR and IIR frequency-domain block adaptive filters is presented.

    Beschreibung: In this paper, we present a performance comparison of several combined error correcting/run-lenth limited (ECC/RLL) codes created by concatenating a convolutional code with a run-length limited code. In each case, encoding and decoding are accomplished using a single trellis based on the combined code. Half of the codes under investigation use conventionally (d,k) run-length limited codes, where d is the minimum and k is the maximum allowable run of 0's between 1's. The other half of the combined codes use a special class of (d,k) codes known as distance preserving codes. These codes have the property that pairwise Hamming distances out of the (d,k) encoder are at least as large as the corresponding distances into the encoder (i.e., the codes preserve distance). Thus a combined code, created using a convolutional code concatenated with a distance preserving (d,k) code, will have a free distance (dfree) no smaller than the free distance of the original convolutional code. It should be noted that this does not hold if the (d,k) code was not distance preserving. A computer simulation is used to compare the performance of these two types of codes over the binary symmetric channel for various (d,k) constraints, rates, free distances, and numbers of states. Of particular interest for magnetic recording applications are codes with run-length constraints (1,3), (1,7), and (2,7).

    Beschreibung: This short paper describes work in progress on the conceptual design of a control system for a cryogenic cooler intended for use aboard spacecraft. The cooler will produce 5 watts of cooling at 65 K and will be used to support experiments associated with the following: earth observation; atmospheric measurements; infrared, x-ray, and gamma-ray astronomy; and magnetic field characterization. The cooler has been designed and constructed for NASA/GSFC by Philips Laboratories and is described in detail. The cooler has a number of unique design features intended to enhance long life and maintenance free operation in space including use of the high efficiency Stirling thermodynamic refrigeration cycle, linear magnetic motors, clearance-seals, and magnetic bearings. The proposed control system design is based on optimal control theory and is targeted for custom integrated circuit implementation. The resulting control system will meet the following mission requirements: efficiency, reliability, optimal thermodynamic, electrical, and mechanical performance; freedom from operator intervention; light weight; and small size.

Results show that the particle trajectories are dependent on the geomagnetic field orientation and the biased potential on both the satellite and the instrument's detector. It is noted that these particles will not escape from the plasma sheath when the B field is perpendicular to the satellite surface plane. It is also shown that part of the satellite surface will be shielded if the perpendicular magnetic field is greater than 0.35 gauss.

RF energy is applied to and passed from the chip carrier by chamfered edges of ridges in the waveguide passages of housings which are removably attached to the base member. Thru, Delay, and Short calibration standards having dimensions identical to those of the chip carrier assure accuracy and reliability of the test. The MMIC chip fits in an opening in the chip carrier with the boundaries of the MMIC lying on movable reference planes thereby establishing accuracy and flexibility.

    Beschreibung: A digitized synchronous demodulator is constructed entirely of digital components including timing logic, an accumulator, and means to digitally filter the digital output signal. Indirectly, it accepts, at its input, periodic analog signals which are converted to digital signals by traditional analog-to-digital conversion techniques. Broadly, the input digital signals are summed to one of two registers within an accumulator, based on the phase of the input signal and medicated by timing logic. At the end of a predetermined number of cycles of the inputted periodic signals, the contents of the register that accumulated samples from the negative half cycle is subtracted from the accumulated samples from the positive half cycle. The resulting difference is an accurate measurement of the narrow band amplitude of the periodic input signal during the measurement period. This measurement will not include error sources encountered in prior art synchronous demodulators using analog techniques such as offsets, charge injection errors, temperature drift, switching transients, settling time, analog to digital converter missing code, and linearity errors.

    Beschreibung: A semiconductor diode structure useful for harmonic generation of millimeter or submillimeter wave radiation from a fundamental input wave is fabricated on a GaAs substrate. A heavily doped layer of n(sup ++) GaAs is produced on the substrate and then a layer of intrinsic GaAs on said heavily doped layer on top of which a sheet of heavy doping (++) is produced. A thin layer of intrinsic GaAs grown over the sheet is capped with two metal contacts separated by a gap to produce two diodes connected back to back through the n(sup ++) layer for multiplication of frequency by an odd multiple. If only one metal contact caps the thin layer of intrinsic GaAs, the second diode contact is produced to connect to the n(sup ++) layer for multiplication of frequency by an even number. The odd or even frequency multiple is selected by a filter. A phased array of diodes in a grid will increase the power of the higher frequency generated.

    Beschreibung: The bandwidth of frequency domain measurement methods of electrical signals has usually been far greater than the bandwidth of time domain methods. The primary limits of the time domain approach have been the 20 to 30 GHz bandwidth limit for electronic waveform acquisition instrumentation, and the lack of usable electrical pulse generators for excitation of a test device. The bandwidth of frequency domain network analysis appears to have reached a plateau of between 100 to 200 GHz, while time domain measurement have improved markedly in both bandwidth and sensitivity with the introduction of the pulsed laser based electro-optic sampling approach. Network analysis or the measurement of device scattering parameters provides information necessary to the design of electronic network such as high frequency amplifiers, mixers, and phase shifter. The bandwidth of frequency domain network analysis is currently being exceeded by the next generations of high frequency transistors and devices. Thus the electro-optic approach is a natural means of extending network analysis into the range above 100 GHz by employing time domain methods. In this approach, a suitable electrical excitation pulse is generated and propagated along a transmission line toward a test device. In the picosecond domain, laser driven photoconductive switches provide a unique method of generating electrical transients. Several materials were studied for generating short electrical pulses using photoconductive switches. The various semiconductive materials tested for photoconductive switching, and the electro-optic measurement technique used to characterize the material performance are described.

    Beschreibung: An approach to the application of high Tc ceramic superconductors to practical circuit elements was developed and demonstrated. This method, known as the rigid-conductor process (RCP), involves the combination of a pre-formed, sintered, and tested superconductor material with an appropriate, rigid substrate via an epoxy adhesive which also serves to encapsulate the element from the ambient environment. Emphasis was on the practical means to achieve functional, reliable, and reproducible components. Although all of the work described in this report involved a YBa2Cu3Osub(7-x) high Tc superconductor material, the techniques developed and conclusions reached are equally applicable to other high Tc materials.

    Beschreibung: Experimental results show that the energies of ions produced near a hollow cathode orifice can be several times the anode-to-cathode potential difference generally considered available to accelerate them. These energies (of order 50 eV) are sufficient to induce substantial sputter erosion rates. Increases in discharge current (to 60 A) cause the energies and current densities of these jet ions to increase substantially. A model describing jet ion generation is proposed. The effects of discharge current on cathode internal pressure are also examined experimentally and described phenomenologically.

    Beschreibung: The response to short infrared pulses of some epitaxial YBCO films prepared by sputter deposition and by electron-beam evaporation is reported. The response is found to be essentially bolometric on the ns timescale, with some indirect hints of nonequilibrium electron transport on the ps scale. Fast switching could be obtained either by biasing the switch close to the critical current or by cooling the film below about 20 K. These results are encouraging for potential application to a high-current optically-triggered opening switch.

    Beschreibung: The use of superconductors to increase antenna radiation efficiency and gain is examined. Although the gain of all normal-metal antennas can be increased through the use of superconductors, some structures have greater potential for practical improvement than others. Some structures suffer a great degradation in bandwidth when replaced with superconductors, while for others the improvement in efficiency is trivial due to the minimal contribution of the conductor loss mechanism to the total losses, or the already high efficiency of the structure. The following antennas and related structures are discussed: electrically small antennas, impedance matching of antennas, microstrip antennas, microwave and millimeter-wave antenna arrays, and superdirective arrays. The greatest potential practical improvements occur for large microwave and millimeter-wave arrays and the impedance matching of antennas.

    Beschreibung: One of the many design challenges of this project is predicting the thermal effects due to the environment inside the vacuum chamber on the turntable and spin motor spindle assembly. The objective of the study is to model the spin motor using the computer program System Improved Numerical Differencing Analyzer (SINDA). By formulating the appropriate input information concerning the motor's geometry, coolant flow path, material composition, and bearing and motor winding characteristics, SINDA should predict temperatures at various predefined nodes. From these temperatures, hopefully, one can predict if the coolant flow rate is sufficient or if certain mechanical elements such as bearings, O ring seals, or motor windings will exceed maximum design temperatures.

    Beschreibung: The power source for the Space Station Freedom will be fully utilized nearly all of the time. As such, any loads on the system will need to operate within expected limits. Should any load draw an inordinate amount of power, the bus voltage for the system may sag and disrupt the operation of other loads. To protect the bus and loads some type of power interface between the bus and each load must be provided. This interface is most crucial when load faults occur. A possible system configuration is presented. The proposed interface is the Current Limiting Remote Power Controller (CL-RPC). Such an interface should provide the following power functions: limit overloading and resulting undervoltage; prevent catastrophic failure and still provide for redundancy management within the load; minimize cable heating; and provide accurate current measurement. A functional block diagram of the power processing stage of a CL-RPC is included. There are four functions that drive the circuit design: rate control of current; current sensing; the variable conductance switch (VCS) technology; and the algorithm used for current limiting. Each function is discussed separately.

    Beschreibung: This project is divided into four main tasks: cell manufacture, acceptance, and lot certification of cells, performance testing of cells, and abuse testing of cells. Lithium/bromine chloride in thionyl chloride (Li/BCX) 149 DD cells (PN 3B2085-XA) were built according to the provisions of Electrochem Industries Quality Plan 17096. Acceptance and lot certification testing was performed according to NASA JSC Document EP5-83-025, Revision B. Acceptance testing included open circuit and load voltage check, visual examination, size and weight measurements, and high temperature exposure. Lot certification tests were performed for capacity performance and for performance under conditions of thermal and electrical abuse. These tests included 149 C exposure, capacity discharge, fuse check, high temperature exposure, high rate discharge, short circuit, vibration, and overdischarge testing. A quantity of 200 cells was delivered to Johnson Space Center for life test evaluation. A parametric evaluation of the capacity discharge of Li/BCX DD cells was performed over a variety of temperatures and discharge rates. This testing served to map the performance capability of the cell. Tests were also performed over a variety of electrical and thermal abuse conditions. Abuse tests included short circuit, charging, overdischarge, high temperature exposure, shock, and vibration.

    Beschreibung: A rigorous spectral-domain formulation for a superconducting stripline or microstrip transmission line with a multiple-layer dielectric substrate is presented. The formulation models the strip conductor as a surface current with an equivalent surface impedance, where the surface impedance is approximated in closed form when the strip is either much thinner or much thicker than a penetration depth. In either case the surface impedance is related to the complex conductivity of the material, which is calculated from a two-fluid model. Results are presented to show the slow-wave propagation and attenuation along both microstrip and stripline packages in a realistic multiple-layer configuration, which accounts for the field penetration into the superconducting ground planes.

    Beschreibung: A new algorithm has been developed for solving Maxwell's equations for the electromagnetic field. It solves the equations in the time domain with central, finite differences. The time advancement is performed implicitly, using an alternating direction implicit procedure. The space discretization is performed with finite volumes, using curvilinear coordinates with electromagnetic components along those directions. Sample calculations are presented of scattering from a metal pin, a square and a circle to demonstrate the capabilities of the new algorithm.

    Beschreibung: A computational design technique for coupled-cavity tubes (TWTs) equipped with spent-beam refocusers (SBRs) and multistage depressed collectors (MDCs) is described. A large-signal multidimensional computer program was used to analyze the TWT-SBR performance and to generate the spent-beam models used for MDC design. The results of a design involving a 75-W, 59 to 64 GHz TWT are presented. The SBR and MDC designs are shown, and the computed TWT, SBR, and MDC performances are described. Collector efficiencies in excess of 94 percent led to projected overall TWT efficiencies in the 40-percent range.

    Beschreibung: The acousto-ultrasonic method has proven to be a most interesting technique for nondestructive evaluation of the mechanical properties of a variety of materials. Use of the technique or a modification thereof, has led to correlation of the associated stress wave factor with mechanical properties of both metals and composite materials. The method is applied to the nondestructive evaluation of selected fiber reinforced structural composites. For the first time, conventional piezoelectric transducers were replaced with laser beam ultrasonic generators and detectors. This modification permitted true non-contact acousto-ultrasonic measurements to be made, which yielded new information about the basic mechanisms involved as well as proved the feasibility of making such non-contact measurements on terrestrial and space structures and heat engine components. A state-of-the-art laser based acousto-ultrasonic system, incorporating a compact pulsed laser and a fiber-optic heterodyne interferometer, was delivered to the NASA Lewis Research Center.

    Beschreibung: Arrays of systolic serial-parallel multiplier elements are proposed as an alternative to conventional SIMD mesh serial adder arrays for applications that are multiplication intensive and require few stored operands. The design and operation of a number of multiplier and array configurations featuring locality of connection, modularity, and regularity of structure are discussed. A design methodology combining top-down and bottom-up techniques is described to facilitate development of custom high-performance CMOS multiplier element arrays as well as rapid synthesis of simulation models and semicustom prototype CMOS components. Finally, a differential version of NORA dynamic circuits requiring a single-phase uncomplemented clock signal introduced for this application.
