    Description: This Special Issue, entitled “Geochemistry and Mineralogy of Ni-Co Laterite Deposits”, presents an updated overview of Ni-Co laterites as sources of Ni and Co but also of other metals of interest, such as Sc, PGE or REE. This collection is composed by researchers from different fields. The Special Issue starts with two general descriptions of previously unknown laterite deposits, a clay-type Ni-laterite deposit from Cuba and a magnesium silicate Ni-laterite deposit from the Philippines. It follows with four papers focusing on the occurrence of Co, Sc and other critical metals located in current tropical environments (the Dominican Republic, Venezuela and Brazil) as well as non-tropical environments (the Balkan peninsula, Spain and Chile). The three following papers deal with novel techniques or methodologies to improve the characterization of the Ni-laterite profiles, involving the use Al as a Sc proxy, water correction of in situ portable XRF analyses, and the study of hyperspectral data using quadrant scan. The next paper focuses on the silicification commonly observed, yet understudied, in some Ni-laterite profiles using oxygen and silicon isotopes. And finally, the last contribution examines the presence of unusual minerals (diamond, SiC) in Ni-laterite breccias.

    Description: The MEET Special Issue aims at showing the gains in geothermal energy that can be achieved using a variety of techniques, depending on the geological setting of the underground. Among the list of exploitation concepts, enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) are particularly interesting, as their application is much less dependent of the underground setting, allowing, in turn, a large geographical deployment and market penetration in Europe. The challenges of EGS are multiple in terms of investment costs, the testing of novel reservoir exploitation approaches with an inherent risk of induced seismicity, and the presence of aggressive geothermal brines, damaging infrastructures. The conversion of oil wells or coproduction of heat or electricity together with oil is also addressed. This Special Issue summarizes the output of the H2020 MEET project based on laboratory experiments, geological field works on high-quality analogues, advanced reservoir modeling, the development of a decision-maker tool for investors and specific demonstration activities, such as chemical stimulation or the innovative monitoring of deep geothermal wells, and the production of electrical power via small-scale binary technology tested in various geological contexts in Europe.

    Description: The Key Laboratory of High-temperature and High-pressure Study of the Earth’s Interior belongs to the Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China. It is a unique and authoritative key laboratory at the provincial and ministerial levels. The Key High-Pressure Laboratory is primarily focused on the high-temperature and high-pressure experimental sciences, in combination with filed geophysical observation, theoretical calculation and advanced analysis tests in order to explore the chemical composition, cycling structure, geological state, material circulation, etc., of deep Earth. The mainstream research subjects of the Laboratory mainly include: research and development of experimental platforms and measurement techniques at high temperatures and high pressures; high-pressure material synthesis and hot-pressed sintering techniques; physical and chemical characterizations (e.g. electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, ultrasonic wave velocity, etc.) of minerals and rocks at conditions of high pressure and different oxygen fugacities by virtue of representative high-pressure apparatus, including autoclaves, piston cylinders, multi-anvil presses, diamond anvil cells and shock waves; high-pressure physiochemical behavior and storage states in the geological fluid and melt of deep Earth interior; high-pressure theoretical calculations; and high-pressure applications in the service of national economical and societal development.

    Description: The increasing partial pressure of atmospheric CO2 (pCO2) is reducing surface ocean pH, a process known as ocean acidification (OA) This results in a reduced saturation of the seawater with respect to the CaCO3 polymorphs aragonite, high-Mg calcite, and low-Mg calcite that are involved in the biological formation of calcareous skeletons and shells. The effect of OA on calcium carbonate precipitation and the subsequent dissolution in carbonate depositional systems, such as coral reefs, is a hotly debated topic. While early studies suggested that certain carbonate-secreting organism groups may be strongly affected by OA or may even become extinct, others observed highly variable, species-specific responses to OA, whereby some taxa are negatively affected, some are positively affected, and others are unaffected. The collection of articles presented in this Special Issue presents ongoing research into the effects of OA on calcareous biomineralization while introducing some new questions and provocative hypotheses. The continued investigation of these concepts should advance our understanding of the mechanisms of biocalcification and improve predictions of how future CO2-induced changes in marine and freshwater systems will impact calcifying organisms, as well as the ecosystems they comprise, in the decades and centuries ahead.

The Project examined the current territory of Cagliari from a "between sea and lagoon" reading perspective, tracing the historical events and the geological and archaeological phenomena of the various settlements, from the Judicial citadel of Sancta Caecilia, Ilia, Ygia, on the shores of the Santa Gilla Lagoon, to the Castel di Castro/Caller with its Appendices of medieval and modern times. Following the same time frame, the Proceedings of the Conference sees the light of day in two parts, the first of which focuses on the historical-urban affairs of the buried and almost forgotten Sancta Caecilia, Sancta Ygia. The second, on the other hand, deals with Cagliari in the modern age, focusing on the political-institutional, economic, social and settlement aspects of the port district, which was more linked to the lagoon and the sea, as with other cities of the Hispanic Monarchy.

Archaeological, geological, historical, settlement and social aspects, funded under Regional Law Aug. 7, 2007, No. 7: "Promotion of scientific research and technological innovation in Sardinia. basic research projects," presented by CNRISEM (PI Marcello Verga, succeeded by Maria Grazia Mele), together with the University of Cagliari (coordin. of Research Unit No. 1 Rossana Martorelli). The Project examined the current territory of Cagliari from a "between sea and lagoon" reading perspective, tracing the historical events and the geological and archaeological phenomena of the various settlements, from the Judicial citadel of Sancta Caecilia, Ilia, Ygia, on the shores of the Santa Gilla Lagoon, to the Castel di Castro/Caller with its Appendices of medieval and modern times. Following the same time frame, the Proceedings of the Conference sees the light of day in two parts, the first of which focuses on the historical-urban affairs of the buried and almost forgotten Sancta Caecilia, Sancta Ygia. The second, on the other hand, deals with Cagliari in the modern age, focusing on the political-institutional, economic, social and settlement aspects of the port district, which was more linked to the lagoon and the sea, as with other cities of the Hispanic Monarchy.

    Description: The new data set along the TRANSALP geophysical transect in the European Alps consists of three types: (i) new apatite and zircon fission data, (ii) a MOVE™ structural-kinematic model for the tectonic evolution along the transect since the Oligocene, and (iii) PECUBE input/output thermo-kinematic model data corresponding to the structural-kinematic MOVE™ model. The fission track data are provided as *.csv data tables formatted to be ideally opened and viewed in RadialPlotter (Vermeesch, 2009) or alternatively in any spreadsheet editor (e.g., Microsoft Excel). The MOVE™ files require the software MOVE™ licensed by Petroleum Experts. The PECUBE input/output files can be opened with any text editor (e.g., Microsoft Visual Code) or data analysis software (e.g., MATLAB™).
    Description: Methods
    Description: Apatite and zircon mineral extraction were conducted for four samples following standard techniques. Samples were crushed and sieved before undergoing magnetic and heavy liquid separation. Apatite and zircon separates were embedded in epoxy resin and Teflon™ sheets, respectively. The sample mounts were polished to expose internal surfaces at approximately half the grain size. Apatite mounts were etched in 5.5 mol HNO3 for 20 seconds at 21 ºC (Donelick et al., 2005), and zircon mounts in a KOH:NaOH eutectic melt at 228 ºC until fission tracks were visible (Garver, 2003). We employed the mica external detector method (Gleadow et al., 1981) for all samples to determine the Uranium content. After neutron irradiation at the nuclear reactor BR1 in Mol/Belgium, micas were etched in 40% HF for 30 minutes at 21 ºC. Spontaneous and induced fission tracks were counted at 1000x magnification on a Zeiss Axiolmager M2m microscope with AutoScan® soft- and hardware. Fission-track ages are calculated using the ζ age calibration method (Hurford & Greene, 1983) using ζ-values of 249.9±8.9 and 121.7±4.1 for the AFT and ZFT systems, respectively. Data visualization and age mixture distribution analyses were aided by RadialPlotter (Vermeesch, 2009). Reconstruction of rock trajectories along TRANSALP were performed in MOVE™ through orogen-scale upper lithospheric cross-section balancing in 2D (e.g., Dahlstrom, 1969). Cross-section balancing provides a tool to reconstruct the displacement of rock material over geologic time scales while maintaining equal rock area before and after deformation under a brittle regime and honoring observed geology. Maintenance of line lengths before and after a deformation step is ensured above active décollements, whereas beneath, we assume crustal thickening occurs through unspecified ‘distributed deformation’ reflecting a hybrid ductile/brittle state. This enabled us to implement a simplified evolution of the Mohorovičić discontinuity (Moho) with time. Shortening above the décollement gives us a precise estimate of the area that needs to be accommodated between the décollement and the Moho. In this process, the Moho has been warped downward by the amount of space displaced between the décollement and the Moho with each deformation step (Fig. 4), assuming that crustal thickening is achieved through distributed deformation’ until the Moho reaches its present-day shape as determined by Kummerow et al. (2004). In this forward kinematic modeling process, we added flexural and isostatic crustal responses to rock displacement and different modes of erosion (i.e., changing the angle of taper topography). For details related to implementation of the geological structures and crustal parameters, please refer to the companion paper. Viable structural-kinematic models are used to track rock displacement and simulate heat advection in a thermal model. The thermal model used is a University of Tübingen modified version of PECUBE (‘Pecube-D’; Whipp et al., 2009; Braun, 2003; McQuarrie & Ehlers, 2015; 2017). Pecube-D is modified from the original version of Pecube to include integration with the Move structural restoration software (McQuarrie and Ehlers, 2015), detrital thermochronometer age analysis (Whipp et al., 2009; Whipp and Ehlers, 2020), and inverse modelling of cooling ages for sample exhumation rates (Thiede and Ehlers, 2013). It solves the three-dimensional heat transport equation for user-defined topographies and surface boundary conditions. Age prediction algorithms for the (U-Th)/He and fission-track systems in apatite and zircon follow Farley (2000), Crowley et al. (1991), Reiners et al. (2004), and Brandon et al. (1998).

    Description: In this book are reported nine works related to land subsidence monitoring using remote sensing techniques. Land subsidence is a common phenomenon in many regions of the world, where it causes degradation of local ecosystems and disruption of economic activities. Its effects are more evident in densely populated areas in particular in low-lying territories such as river deltas and coastal areas where the combination of land subsidence and sea level rise increases the flooding risk. For this reason, the monitoring of ground deformations is a crucial step to obtain important information for the development of risk mitigation strategies. In the presented papers, the characteristics of land subsidence occurring in different study areas are described, and recent developments in the used methodologies for the monitoring of the ground displacements are discussed and validated also by means of ground-based data. Moreover, advantages and disadvantages of the adopted techniques are highlighted. The outcomes of these research works can provide national and local authorities with useful information for the implementation of integrated monitoring systems in the areas most affected by land subsidence.

In this Special Issue, 14 of these sites are described in detail, along with the specialized fauna. An additional paper describes the richest known cave in China.     Description: Tokrat so ekskurzije Ljubljanskega geografskega društva udeležence popeljale na Matični kras, v Brkine, Notranjsko podolje med Babnim in Cerkniškim poljem, Suho krajino in Zasavje. Ekskurzija v Zasavje je bila organizirana s sodelovanjem Društva mladih geografov Slovenije, medtem ko je bila zadnja predstavljena ekskurzija na Dobrač v sosednji Avstriji izvedena v okviru Geomorfološkega društva Slovenije. Podrobni opisi posameznih ekskurzij navajajo priporočljive točke za postanke in temeljitejše oglede tamkajšnjih pojavov in procesov, ob tem pa nazorno predstavijo aktualne tematike. Kljub strokovni obravnavi je beseda ob pomoči številnih slikovnih prilog vseskozi dovolj preprosta, da ostaja razumljiva tudi posamezniku, ki geografsko ni vrhunsko razgledan.

    Description: Ten years have passed since the nuclear accident occurred in Fukushima, Japan, following the Great East Japan earthquake. Thereafter, many people around the world have been concerned about the risks posed by radiation. They still believe that even a small amount of radiation exposure will affect human health. In reality, however, there are many natural radionuclides in the environment, which emit a variety of types of radiation. Although it is well known that there is a positively linear relationship between acute radiation exposure and cancer risk in atomic bomb survivors, the risk of chronic radiation exposure due to natural radionuclides cannot be well explained to people who have lived in high-background radiation areas for many generations. Therefore, more studies in this research field are required to obtain new scientific findings. In order to promote further scientific activities, it will be the best for us to understand the current status of this field by summarizing what we have apprehended so far. This Special Issue will highlight measurement data, methodologies, radiation biology, and risk assessment related to radiation.

    Description: In the first part of the Divje babe I monograph, data from the field of the natural sciences is presented, analysed and interpreted. This is primarily stratigraphic, sedimentological and chronological data and data on the remains of flora and fauna. The latter includes detailed analysis of charcoal from a number of hearths and the remains small and large mammals, with a stress on cave bear. The series of absolute ESR datings and the climatogram of the site should be highlighted in particular, which shows the course of temperature and humidity by layers in the chronozone of the Early and Middle Würm or oxygen isotope stages OIS 5 and OIS 3. The remains of flora and fauna from OIS 3 in particular are analysed, which enables new insight into palaeo-environmental and climatic conditions of this poorly known chronological segment in Slovenia and neighbouring regions. Archaeological finds, including Mousterian bone artefacts, will be presented in the planned second part of the monograph.

    Description: A detailed stratigraphy of Jurassic and Cretaceous deep-water sediments in the Julian Alps is presented. The study areas are located at Mt. Mangart, in the Triglav Lakes Valley and in the broader surroundings of Bovec. The successions are paleogeographically attributed to the Bovec Basin and the Julian High, and correlated with similar successions elsewhere in the Southern Alps. The sedimentary evolution is reconstructed and discussed in relation to synsedimentary tectonics, eustatic sea-level fluctuations and global paleoceanographic changes. The monograph is a fundamental publication for stratigraphy and sedimentology of Jurassic and Cretaceous deposits in the Julian Alps.

    Description: This Special Issue, focusing on the value of mineralogical monitoring for the mining and minerals industry, should include detailed investigations and characterizations of minerals and ores of the following fields for ore and process control: Lithium ores—determination of lithium contents by XRD methods; Copper ores and their different mineralogy; Nickel lateritic ores; Iron ores and sinter; Bauxite and bauxite overburden; Heavy mineral sands. The value of quantitative mineralogical analysis, mainly by XRD methods, combined with other techniques for the evaluation of typical metal ores and other important minerals, will be shown and demonstrated for different minerals. The different steps of mineral processing and metal contents bound to different minerals will be included. Additionally, some processing steps, mineral enrichments, and optimization of mineral determinations using XRD will be demonstrated. Statistical methods for the treatment of a large set of XRD patterns of ores and mineral concentrates, as well as their value for the characterization of mineral concentrates and ores, will be demonstrated. Determinations of metal concentrations in minerals by different methods will be included, as well as the direct prediction of process parameters from raw XRD data.

    Description: This book, “Clay Mineral Transformations after Bentonite/Clayrocks and Heater/Water Interactions from Lab and Large-Scale Tests”, covers a broad range of relevant and interesting topics related to deep geological disposal of nuclear fuels and radioactive waste. Most countries that generate nuclear power have developed radioactive waste management programmes during the last 50 years to emplace long-lived and/or high-level radioactive wastes in a deep underground repository in a suitably chosen host rock formation. The aim is to remove these wastes from the human environment. If a site is properly chosen, a repository system comprising both natural and engineered barriers would provide a high level of protection from the toxic effects of the waste.The 17 papers published in this Special Issue show that bentonites and clayrocks are an essential component of the multi-barrier system ensuring the long-term safety of the final disposal of nuclear waste. The efficiency of such engineered and natural clay barriers relies on their physical and chemical confinement properties, which should be preserved in the long-term.

As members of the International Association for Promoting Geoethics, we suggest ways to ensure that geoscientific sampling and fieldwork are carried out ethically.

    Description: Field-based classes in geological sciences are crucial components of geoscience education and research. Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, such activities became problematic due to limitations such as travel restrictions and lockdown periods: this motivated the geoeducational community to tailor new ways to engage people in field activities. As a result, we adopted Immersive Virtual Reality as a tool to involve students, academics, and the lay public in field exploration, thus making geological exploration accessible also to people affected by permanent or temporary motor disabilities. In particular, we evaluated how users perceive the usefulness of this approach as applied to Earth Science learning and teaching, through nine outreach events, where a total of 459 participants were involved, with different ages and cultural backgrounds. The participants explored, in an immersive mode, four geological landscapes, defined as virtual geological environments, which have been reconstructed by cutting-edge, unmanned aerial system-based photogrammetry techniques. They include: Santorini (Greece), the North Volcanic Zone (Iceland), and Mt. Etna (Italy). After the exploration, each participant filled in an anonymous questionnaire. The results show that the majority would be willing to repeat the experience, and, most importantly, the majority of the students and Earth Science academics who took part in the navigation confirmed the usefulness of this technique for geo-education purposes. Our approach can be considered as a groundbreaking tool and an innovative democratic way to access information and experiences, as well as to promote inclusivity and accessibility in geo-education, while reducing travel costs, saving time, and decreasing the carbon footprint.     Description: Abstract
    Description: The stations are part of a seismic network in the Helsinki capital area of Finland in 2020. The stations recorded the response to a second stimulation of a ∼ 6 km deep enhanced geothermal system in the Otaniemi district of Espoo that followed on the first larger stimulation in 2018. The second stimulation from 6 May to 24 May 2020 established a geothermal doublet system. The Institute of Seismology, University of Helsinki (ISUH), installed the 70 GIPP-provided geophones in addition to surface broadband sensors, ISUH-owned short-period instruments, and a borehole satellite network deployed by the operating company. The data set consists of raw CUBE-recorder data and converted MSEED data. The data set has been collected to underpin a wide range of seismic analysis techniques for complementary scientific studies of the evolving reservoir processes and the induced event properties. These should inform the legislation and educate the public for transparent decision making around geothermal power generation in Finland. The full 2020 network and with it the deployment of the CUBE stations is described in a Seismological Research Letter Data Mine Column by A. Rintamäki et al. (2021).

    Description: During 1999 and 2001 re-excavations in Križna jama were carried out, which brought crucial results concerning the taxonomical and stratigraphical position of the fossil taphocoenosis, especially of cave bears, and on their ethology. Moreover new data on the hydrological structure of the cave as well as on its sedimentology were published. A substantial part of this volume is dedicated to the extant fauna of this cave, which is extraordinary rich in species.
    Description: Nachgrabungen in den Jahren 1999 und 2001 brachten nicht nur wesentliche Erkenntnisse über die taxonomische und chronologische Stellung der fossilen Höhlenfauna und ihrer Lebensweise der Höhlenbären sondern auch neue Daten für die Entstehungsgeschichte der Höhle (Speläogenese), vom Verlauf der ober- und unterirdischen Gewässer (Hydrogeologie) sowie von der Sedimentologie der fossilführenden Sedimente. Ein ausführliche Artikel ist auch der überaus artenreichen rezenten Höhlenfauna gewidmet.

    Description: Deep Crustal Seismic Reflection Profiling: Australia 1978–2015 presents the full suite of reflection profiles penetrating the whole crust carried in Australia by Geoscience Australia and various partners. The set of reflection data comprises over 16,000 km of coverage across the whole continent, and provides an insight into the variations in crustal architecture in the varied geological domains. Each reflection profile is presented at approximately true scale with up to 220 km of profile per page and overlap between pages. Each reflection section is accompanied by a geological strip map showing the configuration of the line superimposed on 1:1M geology. The compilation includes a suite of large-scale reflection transects groups of 1,000 km or more that link across major geological provinces, and an extensive bibliography of reports and relevant publications.

    Description: The extraction of apatite minerals is becoming more and more crucial with the depletion of high-grade ores. At the same time, many streams of waste are continuously being produced by the phosphate industry, including calcareous and siliceous waste rocks, clayey sludge and phosphogypsum. These waste products are produced in huge volumes reaching a ratio of between 5 to 10 tons of waste per each ton of concentrated phosphate. The management of these waste products is becoming a real issue in terms of growing public awareness and environmental and financial aspects. In addition, phosphate ores are known to contain other critical raw materials (CRM) such as rare earth elements and uranium. The recovery of these vital elements from phosphate waste may help to develop the needs of the green energy of the future and contribute to the achievement of the sustainable development goals. In this Special Issue, insights related to the following aspects were studied: phosphate extraction and beneficiation, novel phosphate ores, the fine characterization of phosphate ores and waste, phosphoric acid production, critical raw material (CRM) recovery from phosphate ores and waste, reprocessing of phosphate wastes and finally the valorization and reuse of phosphate waste and phosphogypsum.

    Description: Research regarding the significance and consequence of anthropogenic transformations of the earth’s land, oceans, biosphere and climate have demonstrated that, from a wide variety of perspectives, it is very likely that humans have initiated a new geological epoch, their own. First labeled the Anthropocene by the chemist Paul Crutzen, the consideration of the merits of the Anthropocene thesis by the International Commission on Stratigraphy and the International Union of Geological Sciences has also garnered the attention of philosophers, historians, and legal scholars, as well as an increasing number of researchers from a range of scientific backgrounds.     Description: The Arctic zone of the Earth is a major source of mineral and other natural resources for the future development of science and technology. It contains a large supply of strategic mineral deposits, including rare earths, copper, phosphorus, niobium, platinum-group elements, and other critical metals. The continued melting of the sea ice due to climate change makes these resources more accessible than ever before. However, the mineral exploration in the Arctic has always been a challenge due to the climatic restrictions, remote location, and vulnerability of Arctic ecosystems. This book covers a broad range of topics related to the problem of Arctic mineral resources, including geological, geochemical, and mineralogical aspects of their occurrence and formation; chemical technologies; and environmental and economic problems related to mineral exploration. The contributions can be tentatively classified into four major types: geodynamics and metallogeny, mineralogy and petrology, mineralogy and crystallography, and mining and chemical technologies associated with the exploration of mineral deposits and the use of raw materials for manufacturing new products.     Description: This history was undertaken to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Geology Department at ANU, and to honour its founding professor David A. Brown. It includes contributions from some 100 former students outlining their career successes. This history was compiled by Dr Mike Rickard, a staff member of the Department of Geology from 1963 to 1997, who also served as Head of Department for seven years. He graduated BSc and PhD from Imperial College London in 1957 and has specialised in mapping the structure of mountain chains in Ireland, Canada, Norway, and southern South America. He also mapped volcanic rocks for the Geological Survey of Fiji. He taught Structural Geology and Tectonics and has supervised field work in south eastern and central Australia. After retirement he has taught U3A courses in Earth Science.

    Description: Reactions at mineral surfaces are central to all geochemical processes. As minerals comprise the rocks of the Earth, the processes occurring at the mineral–aqueous fluid interface control the evolution of the rocks and hence the structure of the crust of the Earth during processes such as metamorphism, metasomatism, and weathering. In recent years focus has been concentrated on mineral surface reactions made possible through the development of advanced analytical methods such as atomic force microscopy (AFM), advanced electron microscopies (SEM and TEM), phase shift interferometry, confocal Raman spectroscopy, and advanced synchrotron-based applications, to enable mineral surfaces to be imaged and analyzed at the nanoscale. Experiments are increasingly complemented by molecular simulations to confirm or predict the results of these studies. This has enabled new and exciting possibilities to elucidate the mechanisms that govern mineral–fluid reactions. In this Special Issue, “Mineral Surface Reactions at the Nanoscale”, we present 12 contributions that highlight the role and importance of mineral surfaces in varying fields of research.

    Description: Making the Geologic Now announces shifts in cultural sensibilities and practices. It offers early sightings of an increasingly widespread turn toward the geologic as source of explanation, motivation, and inspiration for creative responses to conditions of the present moment. In the spirit of a broadside, this edited collection circulates images and short essays from over 40 artists, designers, architects, scholars, and journalists who are actively exploring and creatively responding to the geologic depth of “now.” Contributors’ ideas and works are drawn from architecture, design, contemporary philosophy and art. They are offered as test sites for what might become thinkable or possible if humans were to collectively take up the geologic as our instructive co-designer—as a partner in designing thoughts, objects, systems, and experiences. Recent natural and human-made events triggered by or triggering the geologic have made volatile earth forces sense-able and relevant with new levels of intensity. As a condition of contemporary life in 2012, the geologic “now” is lived as a cascade of events. Humans and what we build participate in their unfolding. Today, and unlike the environmental movements of the 1970s, the geologic counts as “the environment” and invites us to extend our active awareness of inhabitation out to the cosmos and down to the Earth’s iron core.

    Description: The city of Firenze represents, for the variety of its artistic and architectural heritage, a kind of open-air museum. Works of art and monuments are mainly made of the rocks outcropping in Firenze and in the surrounding areas; indeed, a close link exists between monuments, geographical position of the city and its history. Florence, is characterised by the color of its stone-built cultural heritage, mainly by the warm ochraceous color of the Medieval Pietraforte sandstone and the cerulean grey of the Renaissance Pietra Serena sandstone together with other natural and artificial materials used to complete or cover the stone walls. The web-app 〈i〉Florence RockinArt〈/i〉 was created to deepen the knowledge of the stone materials. It is addressed to all those who are interested in discovering the monuments of Florence by carefully observing the stone materials that make up them. The web-app contains short historical notes on the main monuments and detailed geological, mineralogical and petrographic characteristics of the natural and artificial materials of which they are constituted.

    Description: Chercheur passionné et naturaliste accompli, Alcide Dessalines d’Orbigny (1802-1857) a laissé une œuvre prestigieuse et féconde dont le caractère exceptionnel, par son ampleur, ses implications dans la science actuelle et la diversité des sujets abordés, ne laisse pas d’étonner scientifiques et historiens. En présentant son premier travail sur les foraminifères (microorganismes unicellulaires, pourvus d’une coquille capable de se fossiliser), il signait l’acte de naissance de la Micropaléontologie, sans soupçonner l’importance qu’elle prendrait ensuite dans le concert des géosciences, notamment en Paléocéanographie et Paléoclimatologie, et dans le développement de la recherche pétrolière ou encore des travaux d’aménagement du territoire, tel le creusement du Tunnel sous la Manche. Les planches de foraminifères dessinés par d’Orbigny concrétisaient plusieurs années d’observation ; elles étalent destinées à l’illustration de son travail fondateur sur les foraminifères, mais restèrent inédites bien que devenues une référence incontournable pour de nombreux chercheurs. D’une grande qualité, elles témoignent des dons d’observation de leur auteur et de ses talents artistiques. Il importait donc de les publier.     Description: With its wide spectrum of data, case studies, monitoring, and experimental and numerical simulation techniques, the multidisciplinary approach of material, environmental, and computer science applied to the conservation of cultural heritage offers several opportunities for the heritage science and conservation community to map and monitor state-of-the-art knowledge on natural and human-induced climate change impacts on cultural heritage—mainly constituted by the built environment—in Europe and Latin America. Geosciences’ Special Issue titled “Preservation of Cultural Heritage and Resources Threatened by Climate Change” was launched to take stock of the existing but still fragmentary knowledge on this challenge, and to enable the community to respond to the implementation of the Paris agreement. These 10 papers exploit a broad range of data derived from preventive conservation monitoring conducted indoors in museums, churches, historical buildings, or outdoors in archeological sites and city centers. Case studies presented in the papers focus on a well-assorted sample of decay phenomena occurring on heritage materials (e.g., surface recession and biomass accumulation on limestone, depositions of pollutant on marble, salt weathering on inorganic building materials, and weathering processes on mortars in many local- to regional-scale study areas in the Scandinavian Peninsula, the United Kingdom, Belgium, France, Italy, Greece, and Panama). Besides monitoring, the methodological approaches showcased include, but are not limited to, original material characterization, decay product characterization, and climate and numerical modelling on material components for assessing environmental impact and climate change effects.

    Description: The objective of this study is to identify major sand trends, which, along with subsurface temperatures and pressures, aid in evaluating the potential of producing geothermal energy from the Frio Formation, Upper Texas Gulf Coast. During the Tertiary, huge quantities of terrigenous sediments were deposited as gulfward-thickening sedimentary wedges along the Texas Gulf Coast. The sand and shale making up these wedges were transported across a broad fluvial plain and deposited in deltaic complexes or were reworked by marine processes into strandplains and barrier islands. Growth faults developed contemporaneously at the site of maximum deposition as a result of rapid loading of large quantities of deltaic and strandplain sands onto previously deposited prodelta and shelf muds. These growth faults allowed the accumulation of extremely thick sections of sand and also caused the isolation of many of these sand bodies from porous updip sands; pressured reservoirs developed after further loading and copaction (Bruce, 1973; Jones, 1975). This study is investigating geopressured geothermal reservoirs in this setting. Limited data obtained from deep wells drilled for oil and gas indicate that many of these large sand reservoirs are filled with water which has high temperature, is relatively low in total dissolved solids, and is saturated with methane gas. To be suitable for electric power generation, the reservoir shouls have a volume greater than 3 cubic miles (which is equivalent to 300 feet of sand distributed areally over more than 50 square miles), permeability greater than 20 millidarcies, and subsurface temperatures higher than 300 degrees F. This report reviews the results of the Bureau of Economic Geology regional study of the Frio Formation in the Upper Texas Gulf Coast. It is a continuation of two similar studies of the Frio in the Lower and Middle Texas Gulf Coast (Bebout, Dorfman, and Agagu, 1975; Bebout, Agagu, and Dorfman, 1975). The objective of these reports is to outline areas (fairways) which appear the most prospective for producing geothermal energy and which therefore deserve further, more detailed study.

    Description: A number of wells penetrating the Floridan aquifer in easternClay County were found to be losing water to permeable zones abovethis aquifer. A differential in artesian pressure was observed in closelyspaced wells of similar depth. Further investigation. revealed thatthe pressure differential in the wells was due to the design of thewells, of which there were four principal types.A comparison of the four types of wells in relation to the subsurfacegeology showed that three types of wells were open to the permeablezones above the Floridan aquifer. In such wells water of relativelyhigh head from the Floridan aquifer moves up through the well boreand out into zones of relatively low head.The estimated water loss from poorly designed wells rangedfrom 32 to 180 gpm (gallons per minute). The artesian head loss inleaky wells ranged from 3 to 15 feet. A total loss of water of 39 mgd(million gallons per day) was estimated from all the leaky wells inthe area. A significant decline of the piezometric surface of the Floridanaquifer was observed in eastern Clay County. Some of this decline canbe attributed to the loss of water from the Floridan aquifer throughthese poorly designed wells. (Document has 16 pages.)

    Description: Pour comprendre dynamique sédimentaire dans la frange littorale entre Oued Melah et Oued Gabès, des échantillons de sédiments de surface ont été prélevés entre 0.3m et 23 m de profondeurs pour étudier la granulométrie et la minéralogie des sédiments. Les analyses des paramètres granulométriques des sédiments de surfaces, montre que la plage sous-marine de la région de Gabès est tapissée par des sables fins, des sables moyens et des sables grossiers. Les sables grossiers et mal classés sont localisés dans les milieux profonds aux niveaux des isobathes -20m et -23m, alors que les sables fins et bien classés tapissent les fonds inférieurs à 15m. Les sables des petits fonds entre 0.3 m et 23 m des petits fonds présentent une granulométrie uniforme. Ils se sont déplacés par saltation et par suspension gradée dans les faibles profondeurs entre la zone de déferlement (5-7 m) et le trait de côte. Par contre, ils se sont déplacés par charriage et par roulement dans les profondeurs supérieures à 7 m. L’analyse minéralogique montre que les minéraux non argileux les plus abondants sont le gypse, le quartz, l’aragonite, la calcite, la calcite magnésienne et de moindre importance la dolomite.
    Description: To understand Sedimentary dynamics in the littoral fringe between Oued Melah and Oued Gabès, sub-surface marine sediments were collected between the isobaths 0.3 and 23 m in order to study the grain size characteristics and the mineralogy of the sediments. Analyses of the granulometric parameters of surface sediments show that the sands of the submarine beach of the Gabès region are covered by fine sands, medium sands and coarse sands. The coarse and poorly graded sands are located at great depths, while the fine and well-graded sands cover the bottom less than 15 m depth. The sands of the shallows have a uniform grain size. They moved by saltation and suspension graded in the shallow depths between the breaking zone (5-7m). On the other hand, they moved by thrusting and rolling in more than 7 m depth. Mineralogical analysis shows that the most abundant non-clay minerals are gypsum, quartz, aragonite, calcite, magnesian calcite and less important dolomite.

    Description: Charles Darwin the research ship undertook an Oceanographic Cruise in 1986, CD 86/17 of the North Arabian Sea. Sediment cores were collected between 15° and 25°N. In this study sediment cores collected from deep Indus and Oman basins (CD 1715, CD 1730, CD 1738) have been analyzed for mineralogy, water content and porosity. In general, the cores are mainly composed of clay to silt sized terrigenous and biogenic constituents. Quartz, Chlorite and Illite are the common minerals of Arabian Sea sediments. Porosity determined by water content of sediments has been correlated with quartz/chlorite and quartz/illite peak ratios to show a relationship between mineral composition and physical properties.

    Description: Carbon dioxide is an essential gas for life on earth although it can be lethal to living beings at high concentrations in the atmosphere. Episodic release of CO2 from underground can occur either from natural processes (i.e., mantle degassing, thermal decarbonation) or industrial (geological storage of CO2, CCS). CO2 is a colourless and odourless gas denser than air, and once released in the atmosphere from point sources, its dynamics is initially governed by buoyancy and a gas cloud can accumulate above the ground (gravitational phase) leading to the formation of the so-called “CO2 lakes”. With time, CO2 distribution is then governed by wind and atmospheric turbulence (passive dispersion phase). Natural analogues provide evidences of the impact of CO2 leakage on vegetal cover, wild life and human beings. In this work, the dynamics of CO2 in the atmosphere after ground emission is assessed to quantify their potential risk. Two approaches have been followed: (1) direct measurement of air concentration in a natural emission site, where formation of a “CO2 lake” is common and (2) numerical atmospheric modelling with the TWODEE code. The studied site is located in the Campo de Calatrava region in central Spain, which is known for a widespread degassing of mantle-derived CO2. This site, called Cañada Real, has a degassing rate between 1 and 3 tonnes of CO2 per day. When atmospheric conditions are quite stable, i.e., negligible wind speed, the formation of a blanket of CO2-enriched air is visible at naked eye reaching up to 50 cm high. The CO2 concentration measured in air is typically higher than 10,000 ppm in most monitoring stations. The measured data are consistent with the numerical models that predict maximum concentration between 40,000 and 70,000 ppm CO2 in air, which is by far higher than the 30,000 ppm threshold from which hazardous effects on human beings are observed. Conclusions from this work, however, indicate that the risk for humans even at large emission rates is low due to the CO2 dispersion effect into the atmosphere, and only under very particular conditions lethal effects are predicted.

    Description: The traditional study of palaeoseismic trenches, involving logging, stratigraphic and structural interpretation, can be time consuming and affected by biases and inaccuracies. To overcome these limitations, a new workflow is presented that integrates infrared hyperspectral and photogrammetric data to support field-based palaeoseismic observations. As a case study, this method is applied on two palaeoseismic trenches excavated across a post-glacial fault scarp in northern Finnish Lapland. The hyperspectral imagery (HSI) is geometrically and radiometrically corrected, processed using established image processing algorithms and machine learning approaches, and co-registered to a structure-from-motion point cloud. HSI-enhanced virtual outcrop models are a useful complement to palaeoseismic field studies as they not only provide an intuitive visualisation of the outcrop and a versatile data archive, but also enable an unbiased assessment of the mineralogical composition of lithologic units and a semi-automatic delineation of contacts and deformational structures in a 3D virtual environment. Résumé L'étude traditionnelle des tranchées paléosismiques, impliquant l'enregistrement des coupes et l'interprétation stratigraphique et structurelle, peut prendre beaucoup de temps et être entachée de biais et d'inexactitudes. Pour surmonter ces limites, une nouvelle méthodologie est présentée, intégrant des données photogrammétriques et hyperspectrales infrarouges en appui aux observations paléosismiques de terrain. Comme étude de cas, cette méthode est appliquée à deux tranchées paléosismiques creusées à travers un escarpement de faille post-glaciaire dans le nord de la Laponie finlandaise. L'imagerie hyperspectrale (HSI) est corrigée géométriquement et radiométriquement, traitée à l'aide d'algorithmes classiques de traitement d'images et d'apprentissage machine, et recalée sur un nuage de points photogrammétrique. Les modèles virtuels d'affleurements améliorés par HSI constituent un complément utile aux études paléosismiques de terrain, car ils fournissent non seulement une visualisation intuitive de l'affleurement et une archive de données facile d'emploi, mais permettent également une évaluation non biaisée de la composition minéralogique d'unités lithologiques ainsi qu'une délimitation semi-automatique des contacts et des structures de déformation dans un environnement virtuel 3D.

    Description: Bedload transport is a key process in fluvial morphodynamics and hydraulic engineering, but is notoriously difficult to measure. The recent advent of stream-side seismic monitoring techniques provides an alternative to in-stream monitoring techniques, which are often costly, staff-intensive, and cannot be deployed during large floods. Seismic monitoring is a surrogate method requiring several steps to convert seismic data into bedload data. State-of-the-art approaches of conversion exploit physical models predicting the seismic signal generated by bedload transport. Here, we did an active seismic survey (2017-11) and used seismic data from a flood event (2016-02-22) on the Nahal Ehstemoa to constrain a seismic bedload model. We conducted the active seismic survey to determine the local seismic ground properties, i.e., the Green’s function. We also used water depth and bedload grain size distribution to constrain the seismic bedload model and were able to compare the bedload flux obtained from the seismic data using the model with high-quality independent bedload measurements from slot samplers on the site. The complementary non-seismic data is published in a separate data publication (Lagarde et al., 2020).

    Description: This data collection provides digital access to data and publications of the KTB (German Continental Deep Drilling Program) project. KTB was a very detailed, long-term Earth science investigation on the structure, dynamics and formation of the Central European crust in Northeastern Bavaria, Germany (Harms, Kück 2016). With geophysical sounding and ultra-deep drilling it elucidated a crustal block at the border of a micro-continental collision zones amalgamated during the Caledonian and Variscan orogenies. Major research themes were: i) the nature of geophysical structures and phenomena, ii) the crustal stress field and the brittle-ductile transition, iii) the thermal structure of the crust, iv) crustal fluids and transport processes, and v) structure and evolution of the central European Variscan basement. KTB started in 1982 with pre-site selection studies and scientific objective definition followed in 1985 by site selection studies including shallow boreholes. From 1987 to 1990 a pilot borehole of 4000 m depth was drilled and fluid tests and borehole studies were conducted. In 1990 started drilling of a so-called superdeep main borehole of 9101 m depth that was reached in 1994. Again, the final drilling phase was concluded with large-scale fluid and seismic experiments. The rocks drilled comprise metamorphic series of mafic volcanic, volcano-clastics as well as minor gabbroic to ultramafic rocks that are intercalated with leucocratic meta-sedimentary gneisses. They represent most likely a deeply subducted accretionary wedge mélange with a complex P-T-t history. The undisturbed bottom hole temperature is ~265°C. Among the outstanding results are the following: (1) A continuous profile of the complete stress tensor was obtained. (2) Several lines of evidence indicate that KTB reached the present-day brittle-ductile transition. (3) The drilled crustal segment is distinguished by large amounts of free fluids down to mid-crustal levels. (4) The role of post-orogenic brittle deformation had been grossly underestimated. (5) Steep-angle seismic reflection surveys depict the deformation pattern of the upper crust. (6) High-resolution seismic images of the crust can be obtained with a newly developed technique of true-amplitude prestack depth migration. (7) The electrical behavior of the crust is determined by secondary graphite (+/-sulfides) in shear zones. (after Emmermann und Lauterjung (1997)

    Description: A seismic network was installed in the Helsinki capital area of Finland to monitor the response to a 6 km deep geothermal stimulation experiment in 2018. The Institute of Seismology, University of Helsinki (ISUH), installed these 100 geophones in addition to five surface broadband sensors and a 13-site borehole network deployed by the operating company. The stations operated for 106 days between 7 May and 20 August 2018 (day 127 to 232). The data set consists of raw CUBE-recorder data and converted MSEED data.

    Description: Detailed investigation of landforms and their underlying deposits on the eastern margin of Fenland, East Anglia, demonstrated that they represent a series of glaciofluvial delta-fan and related sediments. Associated with these deposits are glacially dislocated sediments including tills, meltwater and pre-existing fluvial sediments. These ‘Skertchly Line’ deposits occur in the context of a substantial ice lobe that entered Fenland from the N to NE, dammed the streams entering the basin and caused glacial lakes to form in the valleys on the margins. Bulldozing by the ice lobe caused a series of ice-pushed ridges to form at the dynamic margin, especially at the ice maximum and during its retreat phases. Meltwater formed a series of marginal fans that coalesced into marginal accumulations in the SE of the basin. The ice lobe is named the Tottenhill glaciation. Further investigations of the Fenland margin have revealed the extent of the Tottenhill glaciation in the Fenland Basin, to the south and west, in sufficient detail to demonstrate the nature of the Tottenhill ice lobe and the landscape left on deglaciation. The ice lobe is likely to have been prone to surging. This is indicated by the low gradient of the ice lobe, the presence of underlying ductile Mesozoic clays, the evidence of ice-marginal flooding and the presence of arcuate glaciotectonic push moraines. Regional correlation, supported by independent numerical geochronology, indicates that the glaciation occurred ca 160 ka, i.e. during the late Middle Pleistocene, Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6, the Wolstonian Stage. Comparison and correlation across the southern North Sea Basin confirms that the glaciation is the equivalent of that during the Late Saalian Drenthe Stadial in The Netherlands. The implications of this correlation are presented. Before the glaciation occurred, the Fenland Basin did not exist. It appears to have been initiated by a subglacial tunnel valley system beneath the Anglian (=Elsterian, MIS 12) ice sheet. During the subsequent Hoxnian (=Holsteinian; approx. MIS 11) interglacial, the sea invaded the drainage system inherited following the glacial retreat. The evolution through the subsequent ca 200 ka Early to Middle Wolstonian substages, the interval between the Hoxnian (Holsteinian) temperate Stage and the Wolstonian glaciation, represents a period during which fluvial and periglacial activity modified the landscape under cold climates, and organic sediments were laid down during a warmer event. Palaeolithic humans were also periodically present during this interval, their artefacts having been reworked by the subsequent glaciation. The deglaciation was followed by re-establishment of the rivers associated with the deposition of Late Wolstonian (Warthe Stadial) gravels and sands, and later, deposits of the Ipswichian interglacial (=Eemian, approx. MIS 5e) including freshwater, then estuarine sediments. Subsequent evolution of the basin occurred during the Devensian Stage (=Weichselian, MIS 5d-2) under predominantly cold, periglacial conditions.

    Description: The main goal of this work is to study the geological and structural setting of two different geological areas, Marcellina close to Rome in Latium and Gissi in Abruzzi, to identify the possible mechanism of the generation and evolution of these collapses. Close to Marcellina town, a sinkhole suddenly formed in Pozzo Grande area on 2OO1, sinkhole have been formed in Holocene lacustrine sediments. For this reason microgravity prospecting has been applied in Marcellina town in order to identify the sinkholes risk areas and any other geological conditions similar to those leading to the 2OO1 collapse. The underground geological features of Marcellina town shows some sinkholes risk areas due to the nature of the sediments and sometimes to the presence of anthropic cavities. Both microgravity and geoelectrical tomography data have been proposed to explain the causes of some future collapse: the results obtained by geoelectrical tomography, made it possible to establish the presence of a low resistivity (4O Ohm/m) that corresponds a negative anomaly zone by microgravity survey (due to the presence of a considerable thickness of clay and sand formation, and sediments with lower density and resistivity) and a high resistivity (3320 Ohm/m) corresponds a maximum gravity zone (due to low deep of calcareous bedrock in underground, with higher density and resistivity). A profile is irregular: in the south-east side of city hall, the presence of a high resistivity corresponds a minimum gravity zone, due to the effect of the cistern or natural or anthropic cavity origin. Recently many sinkholes have been formed in some peculiar areas of the Abruzzi, Gissi. A microgravity survey of the area was carried out in 2002 and defined the extend, cause and nature of subsidence. It showed the subsidence resulted from underground dissolution of evaporitic rocks which presents karstic processes and active faults; the presence of a great underground water flow with its physico-chemical properties, ascending liquids and gases, tectonic faults and anthropic causes that can develop fastest phenomena. The rapid dissolution of evaporitic rocks in subsurface conditions can result in caves and cavities that rapidly expand, become unstable and start to collapse. In Marcellina town where the bedrock is buried by thick alluvial successions there are a human geohazards associated with the lower density sediments. Abstraction from sediments aquifers can yield excessively hard water, accelerate removal and cause aggravated subsidence. In the Gissi area where evaporitic rocks occurs there are a natural or induced geohazards associated with the rock, but awareness of them is low.

    Description: We applied the Small Baseline Subset multi-temporal InSAR technique (SBAS) to two SAR datasets acquired from 2003 up to 2013 by Envisat (ESA, European Space Agency) and COSMO-SkyMed (ASI, Italian Space Agency) satellites to investigate spatial and temporal patterns of land subsidence in the Sibari Plain (Southern Italy). Subsidence processes (up to ~20 mm/yr) were investigated comparing geological, hydrogeological, and land use information with interferometric results. We suppose a correlation between subsidence and thickness of the Plio-Quaternary succession suggesting an active role of the isostatic compensation. Furthermore, the active back thrusting in the Corigliano Gulf could trigger a flexural subsidence mechanism even if fault activity and earthquakes do not seem play a role in the present subsidence. In this context, the compaction of Holocene deposits contributes to ground deformation. Despite the rapid urbanization of the area in the last 50 years, we do not consider the intensive groundwater pumping and related water table drop as the main triggering cause of subsidence phenomena, in disagreement with some previous publications. Our interpretation for the deformation fields related to natural and anthropogenic factors would be a comprehensive and exhaustive justification to the complexity of subsidence processes in the Sibari Plain.

    Description: We made a stratigraphic, structural and morphologic study of Amiata Volcano in Italy. We find that the edifice is dissected by intersecting grabens that accommodate the collapse of the higher sectors of the volcano. In turn, a number of compressive structures and diapirs exist all around the margin of the volcano. These structures create an angular drainage pattern, with stream damming and captures, and a set of lakes within and around the volcano. We interpret these structures as the result of volcanic spreading of the edifice of Amiata onto its weak substratum, formed by the late Triassic evaporites (Anidriti of Burano) and the Middle-Jurassic to Early-Cretaceous clayey chaotic complexes (Ligurian Complex). Regional doming created a slope in the basement forcing the outward flow and spreading of the ductile layers below the volcano. We model the dynamics of spreading with a scaled lubrication approximation of the Navier Stokes equations, and numerically study a solution. In the model we include simple functions for volcanic deposition and surface erosion that change the topography over time. Scaling indicates that spreading at Amiata could still be active. The numerical solution shows that, as the central part of the edifice sinks into the weak basement, diapiric structures of the underlying formations form around the base of the volcano. Deposition of volcanic rocks within the volcano and surface erosion away from it both enhance spreading. In addition, a sloping basement may constitute a trigger for the formation of trains of adjacent diapirs. Finally, we observe that volcanic spreading has created ideal heat traps that constitute todays’ exploited geothermal fields at Amiata. Normal faults generated by volcanic spreading, volcanic conduits, and direct contact between volcanic rocks (which host an extensive fresh-water aquifer) and the rocks of the geothermal field, constitute ideal pathways for water recharge during vapour extraction for geothermal energy production. We think that volcanic spreading could maintain faults in a critically stressed state, facilitating the occurrence of triggered seismicity.

    Description / Table of Contents: The profound impact of glaciers on the development of the landscape in Norway has become common knowledge among most geologists during the last centuries. For example, the alpine landscape, the U-formed valleys with deep basins and bedrock thresholds, the fjords, the strandflat, the glacially polished and striated rock surfaces, and the various and numerous glacial deposits all bear clear evidence of strong glacier influence. Glaciers have advanced and retreated in Norway and adjacent areas a number of times during the last 2–3 million years, and therefore it is commonly thought that the present-day landscape was formed mainly during this very young period of the geological time scale. There are, however, several preglacial landscape features that are preserved or only slightly changed during these young glaciations. Both types of landscape, i.e., the glacially formed landscape and the preglacial landscape, are presented in the first chapter of this volume. This chapter deals with both the processes and their products in the history of landscape development. Starting with the preglacial development, it continues through the ice ages, and ends with processes and landscape development in the Holocene time period. The second chapter discusses the glacial history of Norway during the Quaternary time period, and describes the glacier variations with advance and retreat of the glaciers and ice sheets. The third chapter presents the record of deposits from the represented stadials, interstadials and interglacials during the last 300,000 years in Norway and adjacent areas, and the suggested correlations between these deposits. The fourth chapter deals with neotectonics in Norway and adjacent areas, which are also largely a result of ice-sheet advance, erosion, sedimentation and retreat. The pressure variations on the ground surface as a result of variable ice weight, glacier erosion and accumulation have led to many earthquakes and large faults, such as the postglacial Stuoragurra fault on Finnmarksvidda. This compilation of the present knowledge of the Quaternary geology of Norway will be of use to several of our fellow colleagues of geology, students, and other dedicated, non-professional readers.
