With its accession to NATO, the West German government under Adenauer continued its policy of rehabilitating the German people in the eyes of the Western political community by playing a willing and sometimes leading role in joint ventures whose purpose was said to transcend the nation-state.

    Description: With forty-two extensively annotated maps, this atlas offers novel insights into the history and mechanics of how Central Europe’s languages have been made, unmade, and deployed for political action. The innovative combination of linguistics, history, and cartography makes a wealth of hard-to-reach knowledge readily available to both specialist and general readers. It combines information on languages, dialects, alphabets, religions, mass violence, or migrations over an extended period of time. The story first focuses on Central Europe’s dialect continua, the emergence of states, and the spread of writing technology from the tenth century onward. Most maps concentrate on the last two centuries. The main storyline opens with the emergence of the Western European concept of the nation, in accord with which the ethnolinguistic nation-states of Italy and Germany were founded. In the Central European view, a “proper” nation is none other than the speech community of a single language. The Atlas aspires to help users make the intellectual leap of perceiving languages as products of human history and part of culture. Like states, nations, universities, towns, associations, art, beauty, religions, injustice, or atheism—languages are artefacts invented and shaped by individuals and their groups.

    Le retour de Lyon sous l’autorité royale à la fin des guerres de Religion (1593-1597) (2022)

    Description: Henri Hours' book on the end of the League in Lyon is one of the most important works of 16th century historiography in Lyon, although very few readers have had the opportunity to consult it. This is its main paradox and the challenge of this edition. The thesis was defended at the École Nationale des Chartes in 1951, but it has never been published and, in accordance with the rules of the École, it has never been made available. Only those who knew the author were able to read it, which does not prevent it from appearing in all bibliographies concerning the Wars of Religion. Following his death in 2017 and with the agreement of his family, the Collection Chrétiens & Sociétés has decided to publish this memoir for the first time in order to make it accessible to the public in Lyon and to historians of religious confrontations. Henri Hours meticulously analysed the last years of the League at Lyon, the crucial years 1593-1597. Since 1589, the city had swayed to the side of Catholic intransigence to the point of rejecting its sovereign, Henry IV, and maintaining a costly but necessary war effort in a region crossed by denominational borders. The bishop, Pierre d'Epinac, the consuls of Lyon, the governor of the city, the Savoyard and Spanish spies, but also the street preachers and the little people who were very inclined to be alarmed, were the main actors in these events. Here we touch on the political and religious dimensions of urban history. Through municipal deliberations, correspondence, pamphleteering and some contemporary accounts, Henri Hours unravels the skein of the city's political shift towards submission to the king. By looking back at the writings of some of these actors, notably Pierre Mathieu and Claude de Rubys, he also questions the memory of the event in the consciousness of Lyon.

    Description: Les auteurs de cet ouvrage “ Pierre et Archéologie ”, issu du Colloque international qui s’est tenu à Tautavel (14-15 mai 1998) veulent attirer l’attention sur les nombreux aspects de l’utilisation de la pierre par l’Homme depuis la Préhistoire, et les difficultés pour comprendre et expliquer son identification, son évolution et sa conservation. Mise à part l’utilisation lointaine de la pierre par l’homme préhistorique pour assurer sa survie, il reste le domaine très vaste, plus récent dans le temps, de la pierre de taille utilisée par les hommes. Déjà les gallo-romains se sont servis des pierres dites « du midi » pour des constructions que nous connaissons bien. Mais la pierre n’est pas réservée seulement aux monuments, elle fait partie de la vie quotidienne. En dehors des grands édifices, de nombreuses habitations sont bâties en pierre et souvent leur sol est pavé de pierres. Il y a aussi l’amour de la pierre tout simplement, pour le beau, le toucher : c’est par exemple la sculpture qui agrémente les monuments et même les habitations. Les sarcophages en marbre blanc, sculptés entre la fin de l’Antiquité classique et le Haut Moyen-Age, dont le problème de l’origine est traité dans cet ouvrage, montrent bien la diversité des aspects artistiques que l’Homme a su exploiter. L’ensemble des contributions présentées apporte des données originales sur les méthodes et techniques modernes utilisées pour contribuer à mieux comprendre l’évolution culturelle et artistique de l’humanité, le devenir de la pierre extraite et la restauration des monuments. Ceci montre une fois de plus la nécessité d’une recherche pluridisciplinaire, seule démarche pour assurer la protection et la pérennité de tout ce qui touche notre patrimoine.

    Description: In recent years, through novels and television series ("Vikings", "Millennium", "Borgen" or "Occupied"), Nordic culture has become more visible internationally. At the same time, researchers are questioning what the North is, its conceptualisation, its cultural implications, its geographical characteristics, its social and political challenges. This volume is part of the current debate on the Nordic imaginary based on a notion, Nordicity, which intersects with borealism. Plural and mobile, the North inspires both scriptural and figurative production based on desire, dream, fascination or fantasy. The real, tangible and contingent North is only the apparent surface of a manufactured and invented North. How can we express northernness today? Is a theory of the North possible? This volume attempts to answer these questions by bringing together contributions from researchers in Nordic studies, literature, linguistics and the humanities: each is given the opportunity to define his own conception of Nordicity. Ces dernières années, à travers romans et sériés télévisées ("Vikings", "Millennium", "Borgen" ou "Occupied"), la culture nordique a gagné en visibilité internationale. Simultanément, les chercheurs s'interrogent sur ce qu’est le Nord, sa conceptualisation, ses implications culturelles, ses caractéristiques géographiques, ses enjeux sociaux et politiques. Ce volume s’insère dans le débat actuel sur l’imaginaire nordique à partir d’une notion – la nordicité – qui interagit tout particulièrement avec le boréalisme. Pluriel et mouvant, moteur constant de redéfinitions, le Nord inspire une fabrication tant scripturale que figurale fondée sur le désir, le rêve, la fascination ou le fantasme. Le Nord réel, tangible contingent, n’est que la surface apparente d’un Nord fabriqué et inventé. Comment dire aujourd’hui la nordicité? Une théorie du Nord est-elle possible? Da die Entwicklung der russischen Sprache eng mit den jeweiligen geschichtlichen Ereignissen verknüpft ist, werden im ersten, mehr referierenden Teil die geschichtlichen Voraussetzungen für den Sprachwandel in einem kurzen Überblick dargelegt. Anschließend wird die sprachliche Umbruchsituation charakterisiert. Einen eigenen Abschnitt wird dabei die Einordnung des "Artakserksovo dejstvo" in den literarischen Kontext seiner Zeit bilden. Im zweiten Teil wird der Text des "Artakserksovo dejstvo" sprachlich untersucht.

    Description: "Printing and Prophecy: Prognostication and Media Change 1450-1550 examines prognostic traditions and late medieval prophetic texts in the first century of printing and their effect on the new medium of print. The many prophetic and prognostic works that followed Europe's earliest known printed book—not the Gutenberg Bible, but the Sibyl's Prophecy, printed by Gutenberg two years earlier and known today only from a single page—over the next century were perennial best sellers for many printers, and they provide the modern observer with a unique way to study the history and inner workings of the print medium. The very popularity of these works, often published as affordable booklets, raised fears of social unrest. Printers therefore had to meet customer demand while at the same time channeling readers' reactions along approved paths. Authors were packaged—and packaged themselves—in word and image to respond to the tension, while leading figures of early modern culture such as Paracelsus, Martin Luther, and Sebastian Brant used printed prophecies for their own purposes in a rapidly changing society. Based on a wide reading of many sources, Printing and Prophecy contributes to the study of early modern literature, including how print changed the relationship among authors, readers, and texts. The prophetic and astrological texts the book examines document changes in early modern society that are particularly relevant to German studies and are key texts for understanding the development of science, religion, and popular culture in the early modern period. By combining the methods of cultural studies and book history, this volume brings a new perspective to the study of Gutenberg and later printers."

    Description: The aim of this work is to integrate the West Slavic languages ​​into grammar and language comparisons using modern grammatical approaches. This is done using the example of the imperative sentence in Slovak with a view to other West Slavic languages. This type of sentence is examined for its formal and content-related characteristics. At the same time, its communicative-pragmatic potential is derived and explained from the structural meaning of this mode verbi. The demarcation between the grammar and the pragmatics of the imperative theorem will play an important role here.
    Description: Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die westslawischen Sprachen unter Anwendung moderner grammatiktheoretischer Ansätze in den Grammatik- und Sprachvergleich zu integrieren. Dies erfolgt am Beispiel des Imperativsatzes im Slowakischen mit Blick auf andere westslawische Sprachen. Dieser Satztyp wird hinsichtlich seiner formalen und inhaltlichen Eigenschaften untersucht. Zugleich wird sein kommunikativ-pragmatisches Potential aus der Strukturbedeutung dieses Modus verbi abgeleitet und erklärt. Dabei wird die Grenzziehung zwischen der Grammatik und der Pragmatik des Imperativsatzes eine wichtige Rolle spielen.

    Description: In light of the dramatic events which have been shocking Ukraine since November 2013, this work’s itinerary aims at functioning as a basis for the formulation of new contact points, for a dialogue between traditions and cultures which nowadays are again being shaken by the events of history. The author examines the self-identification paths of the literary phenomenon of Russian language in Ukraine. With the help of interviews with important representatives of the Ukrainian Russian-speaking literary scene, made on the eve of the so-called 'Ukrainian crisis', the author shall closely observe the origins of the marginal nature of these 'post-Soviet hybrid narratives'.

    Description: This book is about reconstructing the grammar of Proto-Bantu, the ancestral language at the origin of current-day Bantu languages. While Bantu is a low-level branch of Niger-Congo, the world’s biggest phylum, it is still Africa’s biggest language family. This edited volume attempts to retrieve the phonology, morphology and syntax used by the earliest Bantu speakers to communicate with each other, discusses methods to do so, and looks at issues raised by these academic endeavours. It is a collective effort involving a fine mix of junior and senior scholars representing several generations of expert historical-comparative Bantu research. It is the first systematic approach to Proto-Bantu grammar since Meeussen’s Bantu Grammatical Reconstructions (1967). Based on new bodies of evidence from the last five decades, most notably from northwestern Bantu languages, this book considerably transforms our understanding of Proto-Bantu grammar and offers new methodological approaches to Bantu grammatical reconstruction.

    Description: The buildings erected in his native city by the Roman emperor Septimius Severus are amongst the most impressive and best-preserved in the Roman world. Because of their unique state of preservation, they give an unparalleled insight into what an architect with an imperial commission could do, when he had the building-materials and technical expertise of the entire empire at his disposal.〈br/>〈br/>The buildings excavated by Italian teams between the two World Wars were examined in detail by Ward-Perkins between 1948 and 1953. The study was never completed in his lifetime, though the drawings and much of the text existed at least in draft form. The present publication puts these in the public domain, together with Ward-Perkins' authoritative insights into the process by which such a grand project was executed.

    Description: St Peter's, Barton-upon-Humber, is a redundant medieval church in the care of English Heritage. As a result of a major program of research carried out between 1978 and 2007, it is now the most intensively studied parish church in the UK. Excavations between 1978 and 1984 investigated most of the interior of the building, as well as a swathe of churchyard around its exterior. At the same time, a stone-by-stone record and detailed archaeological study of the fabric and furnishings of the church was undertaken, continuing down to 2007. The twin aims of the project were to understand the architectural history and setting of this complex, multi-period building (Volume 1, Parts 1 and 2) and to recover a substantial sample of the population for palaeopathological study (Volume 2). An extensive program of historical and topographical research also took place in order to set the archaeological evidence firmly in context.

    Description: "The present work addresses the history of Derecho Indiano (Spanish Colonial Law) and proposes to examine the role played by Indiano-Castilian jurists in the New World as creators and enforcers of a science and the practice of law. They were given the task of organising and developing public authorities as well as the new society, and in their engagement with the temporary institutions, they were confronted with realities and situations as diverse as they themselves proclaimed them to be. The works brought together in this volume originally appeared in journals and collected works from different countries, and they are now being presented here in a revised edition. Castile was the kingdom overseeing the expansion across the Atlantic; an expansion to lands and peoples unknown to Europeans up till that point in time. The jurists who worked under these new and challenging circumstances belonged to the Castilian tradition, and they were immersed in this tradition not only due to their university education, but also as a result of their cultural environment and the very structure of the governing bodies and justice system of the kingdom. The confrontation with a reality that was, in so many respects, different from that of the Peninsular – as could already clearly be seen in accounts written by conquistadors, missionaries and the authorities from the early days – encouraged jurists to search for solutions to the new problems that had arisen. Over the years, this led to the creation of what would eventually shape a heterogeneously composed normative corpus, both in civil and canon terms. The differences between the Indiano and Castilian systems were marked to the point that it became a widely accepted truth that the Indiano order could not be fully understood or taken into account either by the advisors of Castile or the lawyers who travelled to the Americas with no prior knowledge of this particular law. Jurists who were born or based in the Indiano provinces would often come to discover the “constitutional discourse” of the monarchy; in other words, they experienced the unfolding plot, so to speak, not through theory, but rather through the impetus provided by the possible solutions to the numerous issues that had arisen. Although Castilian legal literature, which exerted a powerful influence, was present and being circulated throughout the Americas, preferences when it came to specific authors and legal bodies were as different as the readings and interpretations made of them. Several criteria both general and specific in nature took shape. Consequently, “local contexts”, for example, were often discussed in the application of general norms and the “customary background” was similarly taken into account."

    Description: The work consists of two parts. The first part deals exclusively with the aspect properties of Russian prefigured verbs. A perfective analysis for Russian is proposed, which allows to grasp the semantic differences between imperfective Simplizia and its derivative derivatives in semantic terms. The second part of the thesis is an application of the proposed perfective analysis to Russian pere-prefixed verbs. It is shown that the meaning variants of pere-prefixed verbs in Russian can be derived from a general prefix scheme and the semantics of the stem verb.
    Description: Die Arbeit besteht aus zwei Teilen. Der erste Teil befaßt sich ausschließlich mit den aspektuellen Eigenschaften russischer präfigierter Verben. Es wird eine Perfektivanalyse für das Russische vorgeschlagen, die es ermöglicht, die semantischen Unterschiede zwischen imperfektiven Simplizia und ihren perfektiven Derivata in semantischen Termen zu erfassen. Der zweite Teil der Arbeit stellt eine Anwendung der vorgeschlagenen Perfektivanalyse auf russische pere-präfigierte Verben dar. Es wird gezeigt, daß die Bedeutungsvarianten pere-präfigierter Verben im Russischen aus einem allgemeinen Präfixschema und der Semantik des Stammverbs abgeleitet werden können.

    Description: This book is a historical study of the Tajiks in Central Asia from the ancient times to the post-Soviet period. For millennia, these descendants of the original Aryan settlers were part of many different empires set up by Greek, Arab, Turkic and Russian invaders, as well as their own, most notably during the Middle Ages. The emergence of the modern state of Tajikistan began after 1917 under Soviet rule, and culminated in the promulgation of independence from the moribund USSR in 1991. In the subsequent civil war that raged between 1992 and 1997, Tajikistan came close to becoming a failed state. The legacy of that internal conflict remains critical to understanding politics in Tajikistan a generation later. Exploring the patterns of ethnic identity and the exigencies of state formation, the book argues that despite a strong sense of belonging underpinned by shared history, mythology and cultural traits, the Tajiks have not succeeded in forming a consolidated nation. It retraces the formation of an extensive market for corporate policing, privately contracted security and yellow unionism, as well as processes of professionalisation in strikebreaking activities, labour espionage and surveillance. It reconstructs the diverse spectrum of right-wing patriotic leagues and vigilante corps which, in support or in competition with law enforcement agencies, sought to counter the dual dangers of industrial militancy and revolutionary situations. Although considerable research has been done on the rise of socialist parties and trade unions the repressive policies of their opponents have been generally left unexamined. This book fills this gap by reconstructing the methods and strategies used by state authorities and employers to counter outbreaks of labour militancy on a global scale. It adopts a long-term chronology that sheds light on the shocks and strains that marked industrial societies during their turbulent transition into mass politics from the bitter social conflicts of the pre-war period, through the epochal tremors of war and revolution, and the violent spasms of the 1920s and 1930s. Offering a new angle of vision to examine the violent transition to mass politics in industrial societies, this is of great interest to scholars of policing, unionism and striking in the modern era.

    Description: “Attention” is a primordial topic throughout Goffman’s work. Already his dissertation thesis (1953) includes a separate chapter on “the organization of attention”. In his later studies he developed various concepts related to attention, such as focused/unfocused interaction or “civil inattention”. Although attention is evidently a crucial dimension of the interactional order, Goffman did not elaborate this topic systematically. The study of attention was later refined and enriched by conversation analysts who underlined the role of visual displays of attentiveness in social interaction. Against the backdrop of the notion of “focused interaction”, this paper examines how the psychological approach to “joint attention” differs from or amplifies Goffman’s studies. Based on some of Cartier-Bresson’s photos, it is shown that the contrasting set of focused/unfocused interaction needs to be supplemented by a third type of attention order, in which members are collectively oriented to an outward event. After a discussion of some of the practices of sustaining and re-establishing a focus of attention, empirical evidence is provided that certain interactional purposes can be achieved by displaying inattention. In the final discussion of Goffman’s concept of “civil inattention”, some historical and sociological dimensions are pointed out along which this concept can be further studied.

Les études de cas et les essais comparatifs réunis dans ce volume montrent qu'en dépit de la diversité des sociétés urbaines, la sorcellerie apparaît comme un révélateur des enjeux de pouvoir qui traversent les villes modernes.Dans sa postface, Carlo Ginzburg insiste sur la portée d'une approche comparatiste, toujours attentive aux écarts à la norme, et souligne l'importance d’aborder les procès de sorcellerie comme une manifestation particulière des tensions sociales et culturelles.

The research results presented in this book speak for the fact that the Iijoki series is a significant source material for future research, for example from the point of view of oral history, language variation, metalanguage, swearing and the reader’s reception. Although this language-tool finds its dimension in the artificial Sanskrit of the sütras - the aphorisms of Påñini's grammar - metalinguistic discourse is not restricted to specialized discourse: common speech abounds in metalinguistic notations. The present work focuses on the testimonies of the grammatical school of Pâininian origin, by trying to retrace the course by which metalanguage left the field of naive linguistics to become an object of the school.

On 12 March 2018, Mauritius celebrated fifty years as an independent nation amidst much fanfare. Yet behind the nation's official image of multicultural 'unity in diversity' lurk deep socio-economic inequalities and inter-ethnic tensions that are insistently critiqued in its literature. Against this backdrop, this book analyses how the idea of belonging - a sense of attachment to, and identification with, a place or people - is problematised in a range of contemporary francophone Mauritian novels. The island-nation's complex history and the multi-ethnic composition of its modern-day population mean that belonging is a central but fraught issue in both reality and fiction. Waters explores how diverse forms of affirmative, affective belonging intersect with, and are frequently inhibited by, exclusionary 'politics of belonging' at communal, national or international levels. Using an eclectic theoretical approach to the central concept of belonging, Waters offers in-depth textual analyses of novels by leading Mauritian writers Nathacha Appanah, Ananda Devi, Shenaz Patel, Bertrand de Robillard, Amal Sewtohul and Carl de Souza. Despite their thematic and formal diversity, these novels are shown to be characterised by a common rejection of dominant discourses of ethnic, diasporic affiliation and by a common commitment to the ongoing, future-orientated project of Mauritian nationhood. As such, this book offers an original insight into the dynamics of belonging and exclusion in diverse, multi-ethnic societies.

The challenge for anyone analysing ancient iconography is determining how we interpret what we see. La trajectoire des Juifs italiens, dits Livournais, s’inscrit au carrefour de ces axes. Une communauté enracinée en Tunisie depuis le xviie siècle, mais toujours assimilée au monde européen. Une population cosmopolite, mais jalousement attachée à Livourne et à l’Italie. Une double minorité, à l’égard tant de la nombreuse population juive locale que des cent mille émigrés italiens vivant en Tunisie au début du xxe siècle, mais toujours caractérisée par une forte identité collective. Pendant l’entre-deux-guerres, la place sociale de cette communauté fut remise en cause par une série de phénomènes convergents : l’essor du nationalisme tunisien, les tensions diplomatiques italo-françaises, et surtout par la montée au pouvoir du régime fasciste, résolu à encadrer les communautés d’émigration dans sa politique impériale. Sur la base de fonds d’archives et de témoignages inédits, ce travail reconstruit le parcours des Juifs italiens de Tunisie face aux stratégies de fascisation de Rome, en interrogeant les croisements identitaires dans les contextes d’émigration, la question de l’adhésion de masse au totalitarisme et le poids des médiateurs au sein des sociétés coloniales.

    Description: Germany has gradually become Europe's largest immigration country and is increasingly shaped by the image of a multicultural and multilingual society. However, the issue of multilingualism receives little attention, especially with regard to Slavic migration idioms. The aim of the present study is the empirical investigation of the current language behavior of Slavophone immigrants and the determination of the vitality of their native languages. On the basis of a nationwide survey of 500 immigrants detailed microsociological data on the use of Slavic languages ​​depending on persons, topics and situations will be collected and the influence of linguistic ecological factors such as attitudes, motivations, identity and social network of speakers on language use and language content will be investigated. In addition, on the basis of interdisciplinary approaches to the description of linguistic minorities, the vitality of slavins is analyzed comparatively, showing the current situation and the future development of Slavia in Germany in general and specific tendencies of ethnolects in particular.

Dem Thema Mehrsprachigkeit aber wird insbesondere in Bezug auf slavische Migrationsidiome nur wenig Beachtung geschenkt. Ziel der vorliegenden Studie ist die empirische Erforschung des aktuellen Sprachverhaltens slavophoner Immigranten und die Bestimmung der Vitalität ihrer Muttersprachen. Anhand einer deutschlandweiten Enquete unter 500 Zuwanderern werden detaillierte mikrosoziologische Daten zum Gebrauch der slavischen Sprachen in Abhängigkeit von Personen, Themen und Situationen erhoben und der Einfluss sprachökologischer Faktoren wie Attitüden, Motivationen, Identität und soziales Netzwerk der Sprecher auf die Sprachverwendung und den Spracherhalt untersucht. Zudem wird auf der Grundlage interdisziplinärer Ansätze zur Beschreibung von Sprachminderheiten die Vitalität der Slavinen komparativ analysiert, womit die gegenwärtige Situation und die zukünftige Entwicklung der Slavia in Deutschland im Allgemeinen und spezifische Tendenzen der Ethnolekte im Besonderen aufgezeigt werden.

Focusing on a set of Jewish communities, Robert Chazan tells how, by the eleventh century, French Jews had created for themselves a role as local merchants and moneylenders in adapting to the political, economic, and social limits imposed on them. French society, striving to become more powerful and civilized, was willing to extend aid and protection to the Jews in return for general stimulation of trade and urban life and for the immediate profit realized from taxation. While the authorities were relatively successful in protecting the Jews from others, there was no power to impose itself between the Jews and their protectors. The political and social well-being of the Jews was, therefore, dependent on the will of the governing authorities who taxed their holdings and regulated their activities. During the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, the position of the Jews was constantly under attack by reform elements in the church concerned with Jewish moneylending and blasphemous materials in Jewish books; these reformers were eventually devoted to a serious missionizing effort within the Jewish community. The Jews' situation was further complicated by deep popular animosity, expressing itself in a damaging set of slanders and occasionally in physical violence. Despite the impressive achievements of the Jews in medieval northern France, by the thirteenth century their community was increasingly constricted; and in 1306, they were expelled from royal France by Philip IV. Overcoming the handicap of a lack of copious source material, Chazan analyzes the Jews' political status, their relations with key elements of Christian society, their demographic development, their economic outlets, their internal organization, and their attitudes toward the Christian environment. As it highlights aspects of French society from an unusual perspective, Medieval Jewry in Northern France should be of special interest to the historian of medieval France as well as to the student of Jewish history. This story is also significant for all who are fascinated by the capacity of human groups to respond and adapt creatively to a hostile and limiting environment.

    Description: This grammar offers a grammatical description of the Ngòló variety of Gyeli, an endangered Bantu (A80) language spoken by 4,000-5,000 "Pygmy" hunter-gatherers in southern Cameroon. It represents one of the most comprehensive descriptions of a northwestern Bantu language. The grammatical description, which is couched in a form-to-function approach, covers all levels of language, ranging from Gyeli phonology to its information structure and complex clauses. It draws on nineteen months of fieldwork carried out as part of the "Bagyeli/Bakola" DoBeS (Documentation of Endangered Languages) project between 2010 and 2014. The resulting multimodal corpus from that project, which includes texts of diverse genres such as traditional stories, narratives, multi-party conversations and dialogues, procedural texts, and songs, provides the empirical basis for the grammatical description. The documentary text collection, supplemented by data from elicitation work, questionnaires, and experiments, are accessible in the Bagyeli/Bakola collection of The Language Archive. With additional ethnographic, sociolinguistic, diachronic, and comparative remarks, the grammar may appeal to a wider audience in general linguistics, typology, Bantu studies, and anthropology. In 2019, the grammar received the Pāṇini Award by the Association for Linguistic Typology.

The 'City by the Pool' was a major religious centre long before the Roman invasion and from bronze-age shamans to early Baptists people have always been attracted here for spiritual as well as mundane purposes. The authors argue for the presence of a major ritual causeway of the late Bronze and Iron Age and outline the extent to which ritual monuments also contributed to the character of Roman Lincoln. This book is based on more than a hundred publicly-funded excavations and building surveys undertaken between 1945 and 2000. It surveys all aspects of city life, from housing and fortifications to the water supply and rubbish disposal. It includes a CD Rom with a Geographic Information System (GIS) and a relational data-base known as LARA (the Lincoln Archaeological Research Assessment).

    Description: Roots of language was originally published in 1981 by Karoma Press (Ann Arbor). It was the first work to systematically develop a theory first suggested by Coelho in the late nineteenth century: that the creation of creole languages somehow reflected universal properties of language. The book also proposed that the same set of properties would be found to emerge in normal first-language acquisition and must have emerged in the original evolution of language. These proposals, some of which were elaborated in an article in Behavioral and Brain Sciences (1984), were immediately controversial and gave rise to a great deal of subsequent research in creoles, much of it aimed at rebutting the theory. The book also served to legitimize and stimulate research in language evolution, a topic regarded as off-limits by linguists for over a century. The present edition contains a foreword by the author bringing the theory up to date; a fuller exposition of many of its aspects can be found in the author’s most recent work, More than nature needs (Harvard University Press, 2014).

    Description: The authors comprehensively analyze all the available information regarding the ritual practices of Slavic pre-Christian religion that can be found in written medieval texts. After investigating every kind of reference to such practices, they offer a reconstruction of Slavic pre-Christian religion on the basis of these medieval testimonies. In doing so, they overcome the challenges presented by the fact that all of these sources are indirect, since the Slavs did not acquire literacy until they became Christians. Thus the writers of these texts mostly professed a monotheistic religion, being Christians and in some cases Muslims. The picture that they offer is biased and determined by their own faith. The present analysis innovatively combines testimonies from every Slavic area (Eastern, Western, and Southern), showing their mutual correspondences and emphasizing the relationship between the Slavic pre-Christian religion and its Indo-European roots.

    Description: Organized through the initiative of the Ministry of Culture and Communication, the symposium “Lascaux and Preservation Issues in Subterranean Environments” was held in Paris on February 26 and 27, 2009 under the chairmanship of Jean Clottes. It brought together nearly three hundred participants from seventeen countries with the goal of confronting research and interventions conducted in Lascaux Cave since 2001 with the experiences gained in other countries in the domain of preservation in subterranean environments. Twelve presentations addressed questions related to disciplines such as hydrogeology, climatology and microbiology in relation to the protection and valorization of decorated caves. The talks were followed by debates allowing the experts and all other participants to freely express themselves. This volume, which constitutes the proceedings of this symposium, is composed of the studies presented during the sessions and full transcriptions of the debates. It provides both a synthesis of the conservation activities realized at Lascaux between 2001 and 2009 and the state of research and the conditions of the cave as of 2009.

    Description: Sanzhi Dargwa belongs to the Dargwa (Dargi) languages (ISO dar; Glottocode sanz1248) which form a subgroup of the East Caucasian (Nakh-Dagestanian) language family. Sanzhi Dargwa is spoken by approximately 250 speakers and is severely endangered. This book is the first comprehensive descriptive grammar of Sanzhi, written from a typological perspective. It treats all major levels of grammar (phonology, morphology, syntax) and also information structure. Sanzhi Dargwa is structurally similar to other East Caucasian languages, in particular Dargwa languages. It has a relatively large consonant inventory including pharyngeal and ejective consonants. Sanzhi morphology is concatenative and mainly suffixing. The language exhibits a mixture of dependent-marking in the form of a rich case inventory and head-marking in the form of verbal agreement. Nouns are divided into three genders. Verbal inflection conflates tense/aspect/mood/evidentiality in a rich array of synthetic and analytic verb forms as well as participles, converbs, a masdar (verbal noun), and infinitive and some other forms used in analytic tenses and subordinate clauses. Salient traits of the grammar are two independently operating agreement systems: gender/number agreement and person agreement. Within the nominal domain, modifiers agree with the head nominal in gender/number. Agreement within the clausal domain is mainly controlled by the argument in the absolutive case. Person agreement operates only at the clausal level and according to the person hierarchy 1, 2 〉 3. Sanzhi has ergative alignment in the form of gender/number agreement and ergative case marking. The most frequent word order at the clause level is SOV, though all other logically possible word orders are also attested. In subordinate clauses, word order is almost exclusively head-final.

À l’heure où la France vient d’adopter la loi sur la reconquête de la biodiversité, la question des « nuisibles » reprend une singulière acuité avec la multiplication d’espèces exotiques envahissantes et les vives controverses qui demeurent autour du loup, du renard mais aussi de l’utilisation des insecticides et des herbicides pour se défaire de « gêneurs ». Si la notion de « nuisible » demeure centrale dans la gestion du sauvage par nos sociétés, elle s’avère très variable selon l’époque, l’espèce, le territoire ou le groupe social considéré. Pour dresser un état de la recherche, historiciser cette notion et éclairer les enjeux actuels, il convient de croiser les regards afin de caractériser les différentes conceptions de la notion de « nuisible » qui coexistent actuellement et d’en retracer les origines, tout en s’ouvrant aux acteurs du présent. Ils permettent de mieux comprendre ce que sont les structures phonétique, phonologique, morphologique, syntaxique, lexicologique et sémantique de ces langues. Ils illustrent les principales méthodes d’analyse que l’on emploie aujourd’hui dans les sciences du langage.     Description: This chapter examines the writings of the renowned late-eighteenth-century Moroccan ambassador Ibn Uthmân Al-Meknassî, the first known traveller from his country to leave an account of European quarantine as experienced during his two diplomatic missions in Spain’s Ceuta (1779) and Malta’s Valletta (1782). It shows that quarantine, on the one hand, acted as a marker of otherness by which Ibn Othman was identified as a Muslim, though this was not a uniform process, owing to the fact that significant differences existed in the degree of alterity experienced in Spain and Malta, and indeed other parts of the Mediterranean. The subjective opinion on quarantine, on the other hand, was also one of the means through which Ibn Uthmân situated himself within Makhzen (Moroccan government) elites at a time when a division between those who declared themselves in favour of European-style modernisation and those who advocated a rejection of European novelties was already visible.

    Description: The Eve of Spain demonstrates how the telling and retelling of one of Spain’s founding myths played a central role in the formation of that country’s national identity. King Roderigo, the last Visigoth king of Spain, rapes (or possibly seduces) La Cava, the daughter of his friend and counselor, Count Julian. In revenge, the count travels to North Africa and conspires with its Berber rulers to send an invading army into Spain. So begins the Muslim conquest and the end of Visigothic rule. A few years later, in Northern Spain, Pelayo initiates a Christian resistance and starts a new line of kings to which the present-day Spanish monarchy traces its roots.Patricia E. Grieve follows the evolution of this story from the Middle Ages into the modern era, as shifts in religious tolerance and cultural acceptance influenced its retelling. She explains how increasing anti-Semitism came to be woven into the tale during the Christian conquest of the peninsula—in the form of traitorous Jewish conspirators. In the sixteenth century, the tale was linked to the looming threat of the Ottoman Turks. The story continued to resonate through the Enlightenment and into modern historiography, revealing the complex interactions of racial and religious conflict and evolving ideas of women’s sexuality.In following the story of La Cava, Rodrigo, and Pelayo, Grieve explains how foundational myths and popular legends articulate struggles for national identity. She explores how myths are developed around few historical facts, how they come to be written into history, and how they are exploited politically, as in the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 followed by that of the Moriscos in 1609. Ce vocable quelque peu inattendu désignait la prestation de service que rendirent, de la fin du XVIIe au début du XIXe siècle, les marins européens aux sujets de l’Empire ottoman. Ils assuraient la plupart des liaisons maritimes pour cette immense construction politique à peu près dépourvue de navires de commerce, bien que bordant la majeure partie du littoral méditerranéen. Après avoir exposé les conditions juridiques qui ont encouragé ce type d’association temporaire, Daniel Panzac présente les marins, la pratique quotidienne de la caravane, avant d’évoquer ensuite les affréteurs ottomans. C’est principalement à travers leurs différends que se révèlent les éphémères relations de ces hommes et leur façon de surmonter leur méfiance et leurs préjugés. Ce faisceau dense de liaisons maritimes favorisa la constitution d’un ensemble économique, une « économie-monde », facteur essentiel de cohésion de cet État aussi vaste qu’hétérogène que fut l’Empire ottoman, ensemble dont l’effondrement dans la première moitié du XIXe siècle précéda l’éclatement politique.

    Description: In 1803 in the colonial South American city of La Plata, Doña Martina Vilvado y Balverde presented herself to church and crown officials to denounce her husband of more than four years, Don Antonio Yta, as a "woman in disguise." Forced to submit to a medical inspection that revealed a woman's body, Don Antonio confessed to having been María Yta, but continued to assert his maleness and claimed to have a functional "member" that appeared, he said, when necessary. Passing to América is at once a historical biography and an in-depth examination of the sex/gender complex in an era before "gender" had been divorced from "sex." The book presents readers with the original court docket, including Don Antonio's extended confession, in which he tells his life story, and the equally extraordinary biographical sketch offered by Felipa Ybañez of her "son María," both in English translation and the original Spanish. Thomas A. Abercrombie's analysis not only grapples with how to understand the sex/gender system within the Spanish Atlantic empire at the turn of the nineteenth century but also explores what Antonio/María and contemporaries can teach us about the complexities of the relationship between sex and gender today. Passing to América brings to light a previously obscure case of gender transgression and puts Don Antonio's life into its social and historical context in order to explore the meaning of "trans" identity in Spain and its American colonies. This accessible and intriguing study provides new insight into historical and contemporary gender construction that will interest students and scholars of gender studies and colonial Spanish literature and history.     Description: One of the hardest problems in science is the symbol grounding problem, a question that has intrigued philosophers and linguists for more than a century. With the rise of artificial intelligence, the question has become very actual, especially within the field of robotics. The problem is that an agent, be it a robot or a human, perceives the world in analogue signals. Yet humans have the ability to categorise the world in symbols that they, for instance, may use for language. This book presents a series of experiments in which two robots try to solve the symbol grounding problem. The experiments are based on the language game paradigm, and involve real mobile robots that are able to develop a grounded lexicon about the objects that they can detect in their world. Crucially, neither the lexicon nor the ontology of the robots has been preprogrammed, so the experiments demonstrate how a population of embodied language users can develop their own vocabularies from scratch.

    Description: Ancient Rome has always been considered a compendium of City and World. In the Renaissance, an era of epistemic fractures, when the clash between the 'new science' (Copernicus, Galileo, Vesalius, Bacon, etcetera) and the authority of ancient texts produced the very notion of modernity, the extended and expanding geography of ancient Rome becomes, for Shakespeare and the Elizabethans, a privileged arena in which to question the nature of bodies and the place they hold in a changing order of the universe. Drawing on the rich scenario provided by Shakespeare's Rome, and adopting an interdisciplinary perspective, the authors of this volume address the way in which the different bodies of the earthly and heavenly spheres are re-mapped in Shakespeare's time and in early modern European culture. More precisely, they investigate the way bodies are fashioned to suit or deconstruct a culturally articulated system of analogies between earth and heaven, microcosm and macrocosm. As a whole, this collection brings to the fore a wide range of issues connected to the Renaissance re-mapping of the world and the human. It should interest not only Shakespeare scholars but all those working on the interaction between sciences and humanities.
