    Description: Studies on the effects of crude oil and its fractions on the blood haemoglobin (HB) neutrophil (NP) concentration in the blood of Heterobranchus bidorsalis juveniles were carried out. Two study periods (toxicity and recovery) and four oil types (Bonny-light crude oil (BLCO), premium motor spirit (PMS), kerosene (DPK) and lubricating engine oil (lBO) at 1.00, 2.00, 4.00 and 8.00ml were used. There were significant differences (P〈0.05, p〈 0.01) on the HB and NP values in blood of fish samples. The elevated values of HB levels in fish exposed to 2.00,4.00 and 8.00m1 L-1 BLCC, 2.00ml L-1 PMS and DPK; and 4.00ml L -1 LBO over the levels in the control fish were in consonance with the results of other workers. Increases in NP values in fish exposed to the four oil types (BLCO, PMS, DKP and LBO) relative to the control could be part of the immunological attempts by the fish to mobilize the body's defence mechanisms. The relatively high percent mortality and low survival of H. bidorsalis juveniles exposed to 4.00 and 8.00mlL-1 concentration of the four oil types over the other concentration implied that these concentrations were probably lethal to fish existence.

    Description: The importance of information in every sector cannot be over-emphasized. The ability to identify and utilize our natural endowment depends on the availability of information resources within or at the right time. The low level of information provision in Nigeria is attributed to infrastructure as a result of inadequate funding of the sector. Research has shown that information has revolutionized the society, moving the world from the industrial age to the information age and completely changing the way the economy functions. Success goes with the best information. However, for now, if there must be increase in fish production and eco-tourism participation, employment opportunities, poverty reduction, food security and nature appreciation in terms of environment and living creatures, our fisheries scientists and policy makers will have to rely on sources of information using the advantage of libraries, and Information Communication Technology (lCT). This development in information resources affects many areas of Nigerian economy including the fisheries and eco-tourism sectors. The contribution of information resource in the development of the fisheries sub-sector can be viewed under those of fisheries information products like the Nigerian Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences. (NIFFIC) database, Proceedings of national conferences of Fisheries Society of Nigeria (FISON), annual and technical reports Fisheries Research Institutes in Nigeria. Also to be brought under perspective is the information products of eco-tourist institutions like the Nigerian National Parks.

Generally two important factors play a great role in rural livelihoods; the prevailing structures and processes and access to assets, which can be combined in a various ways to generate positive outcomes. In essence poverty and the opportunity to escape from it depends on all the above. The assets comprise of human, natural, social, physical and financial.     Description: Most of the fish produced in Nigerian fresh-water systems are marketed as dried fish, since there are few alternative methods of preservation for distant markets. Considerable quantities are lost through insect infestation, fragmentation during sorting, mixing, storage and transportation. In Nigeria, a high proportion of the dried fish sold in the market harbours beetle infestation, mainly Dermestes maculatus and Necrobia rufipes. D. maculatus is the dominant pest, accounting for 50.0%. The larvae of both beetles are the most numerous forms and are responsible for a large proportion of the damage of dried fish.

    Description: The study was conducted to assess consumer's preference of fish products in Yenagoa Metropolis, Bayelsa State. One hundred and ninety consumers were randomly selected for the study. Results showed that fishery products in Yenagoa metropolis include fresh, smoked, fried, dried, canned and frozen fish. Sixty-eight percent of the respondents said that the products are enough, whereas seventy-six percent feel the variety of fishery products is low. Majority of the respondents (86%) preferred fresh fish followed by smoked fish which was preferred by sixty-four percent of the respondents. Age, ethnic grouping, gender, marital status and education did not have any significant influence on the preferences of the consumers (P〉O.05). Major problems identified by the consumers were exorbitant prices of fish because of the activities of middlemen, unhygienic selling environment and scarcity of fish products. Consequently, it is recommended that an adequate system of financing small scale fisheries be evolved to reduce the influence of middlemen; sanitary laws should be enacted and enforced in the fish markets around the metropolis; Establishment of modern fish markets in Yenagoa to boast fish production, aquacultural investors should be attracted.

    Description: Fresh tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) was smoked using two different kilns to evaluate and compare the microbial changes or quality, physicochemical and organoleptic characteristics. Smoked samples were dominated by Gram-positive bacterial, flora, Bacillus, Streptococcus and Staphylococcus. Fungi isolated included Aspergillus spp, and Penicillium spp. The two kilns used in smoking are Modified Drum Kiln (MDK) and Mud kiln (MK). The MDK had a higher impact on the total viable count (TVC) and reduced the TVC of the fresh sample by 37.5% while the MK reduced it by 29.5%. In a similar trend the MDK reduced the number of Staphylococci and fungi by 43.3% and 33.8% respectively while the MK only reduces them by 30.9% and 26.3% respectively. Statistical test indicated significant difference (P〈0.05) in the microbial load of fish processed in the two kilns. However, the reduction of the Coliform by the two smoking kilns is not significantly different.

    Description: The objective of this study was to determine the best smoking method that will enhance consumer preference for Clarias gariepinus without affecting negatively the nutritive value. Two methods of smoking were used: cold and hot smoking. The fish were smoked with improvised drum smoking kiln and oven. Smoked fish samples obtained were subjected to chemical analyses and sensory evaluation. Chemical analyses showed that the smoked fish were still rich in protein (66.0067.52%) and fat (9.83-12.28%); while the moisture content ranged between 7.82-8.24% and ash, 12.86-14.16%. There was no significant difference (P〉0.05) in the protein, ash and moisture contents. Significant differences (P〈0.05) were observed in the Calcium(Ca), Potassium(K), Sodium(Na), Zinc(Zn), Lead(Pb), Iron(Fe) and Phosphorus(P) contents. Only hot smoke-dried (HSD) fish samples showed no presence of lead. The levels of sodium(Na) and potassium(K) in the smoked fish were relatively high, though, the amount of potassium(k) was higher. Sensory evaluation results revealed that there were no significant differences (P〉0.05) in the colour and taste ratings of the smoked fish samples. However, significant differences (P〈0.05) were observed in the odour, texture and overall acceptability. Hot smoke-dried and cold oven-dried Clarias gariepinus had the best overall acceptability in ratings.

    Description: Lagos state has a major sea port for landing of frozen fish from Mauritania, Senegal, the Scottish waters and other European countries. In the last three years, the dense population of the state has encouraged all kinds of trade to thrive. Fish as a major food in many Nigerian diets has been known to complement the high carbohydrate intake of majority of the Nigerian populace because of the unaffordable prices of beef in the market. The market for frozen fish is rich in Lagos. It has provided many women fishmongers a livelihood for over a decade. They have been able to sustain their families and improve their social status over the years. This study reports the modus operandi of the trade. The study covered a period of three months. Fish sales were monitored in Epe, Oyingbo, Ijora and Alaba markets. The cooperation of the heads of markets (Iya Olojas) were requested at every market. It was ensured that observations and the interviews/questionnaires do not interfere with the women's activities. Specific areas focused upon in the study included countries of fish imports, most acceptable species, packaging, purchase price, sales price and profit margins. Other important factors in the fish market that were studied included entrance into the fish marketing business, sources of finance and problems. The study also made suggestions on how to improve upon the fish marketing business of women in Lagos State.

    Description: The length weight relationship and condition factor of Hemichromis fasciatus from Kainji Lake was studied. One hundred and twenty seven fish samples of total length ranging from 6.50cm 15.50cm and weigh between 4.00g and 60.00g collected between August 2006 and June 2007 were analyzed. Results showed that a, b and r - values were 0.0042, 3.442 and 0.966 respectively, while the condition factor (CF) values varied from 0.67 2.42 with mean of 1.203. The fish exhibited positive allometric growth pattern. The condition of the lake is favourable for the survival of the fish species.

    Description: Metrological parameters and their impacts on weight loss of fish inside Kainji Solar Tent Dryer were experimentally investigated. Drying experiments were conducted in solar dryer across the five agro ecological zones of Nigeria. During the drying experiments, the parameters such as temperature, relative humidity were lowest. The study showed that meteorological parameters were the primary determinants for fish drying within the Kainji Solar Tent Dryer, since weight loss during the experiment followed the pattern of these parameters

    Description: The growth, mortality and recruitment pattern of Tympanotonus fuscatus var fuscatus were investigated using shell length (SL) - frequency data obtained from the mangrove swamps of the Bonny River, population. Computer based software package FiSAT (FAO - ICLARM Fish Stock Assessment tool) were used for the analysis. Sampling was done between January to December, 2004. Results obtained showed relatively high growth, low mortality and recruitment pattern with two peaks annually.

    Description: The length - weight relationship and condition factor of Citharinus citharus citharus was studied for a period of twelve (12) months from Lake Kainji, Nigeria. Nine hundred and eighty nine (989) fish samples (Citharinus citharus citharus) with total length ranging from 100mm to 530mm and weight ranging from 31.00g to 2250.00g were analysed. The results showed that the values of a, b and r were 0.0039, 3.2134 and 0.8997 respectively. The condition factor(K) values varied from 2.9 to 4.5, which means that the growth pattern of the fish is based on the value of 'a'. the fish species are also living well in the Lake as the 'K' are greater than one.

    Description: Studies on the food and feeding habit of T. fuscatus var fuscatus from the mangrove swamps of the Bonny River, Niger Delta revealed that the species is a deposit feeder but fed more on algae and protozoa. The variation of food types with season were determined from the numerical and frequency of occurrence methods of food analysis. The algae were of Stephanodiscus, Cosanodiscus. Navicula and Nitzschia species, while the protozoa were Arecella arenaria, Pseudodileptus and Trinema species. Feeding actively occurred at low tides, this coincided with the presence of algae on the mud surface. No qualitative seasonal variation occurred as T. fuscatus var fuscatus fed basically on the primary diets at all seasons.

    Description: Twenty samples of canned seafood consisting of tuna, mackerel, sardines, prawn and shrimp were collected from retail operations in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria. Mercury content in these canned seafood were determined after digestion by the Association of Official Analytical Chemists methods. The mercury contents for all the canned seafood products have concentrations well below the permissible EU levels for this toxic metal. Their contribution to the body burden can therefore be considered negligible and the canned seafood products seem to be safe for human consumption.

    Description: There have been many outcries in the Nigerian media on the various environmental degradation of the vast water space in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria by oil explorers. About 70% of the Nigerian populace lives in the coastal areas where the occupation is predominantly fishing and farming. For most of the publications, the extents of impact on the fishing industry are not addressed in order for solutions to be given. Production from the fisheries sector has dropped astronomically thereby earning the country a deficit due to importation of frozen fish to the country. In this study, a survey of three states (Bayelsa, Rivers and Delta) in the Niger Delta area of Nigeria was done. The communities studied include Ogulagha, Okobelema and Okpoama. Personal interviews with fishermen and primary data on the sector’s contribution to fish production and GDP were also carried out. The study aimed at finding out the sources and nature of degradation and the impacts such have on the fishing industry and the socio-economics of the fishermen. The study revealed that there are no significant difference in the negative impacts of environmental degradation caused by the activities of the oil companies on the socio-economics of the fishermen ((F2,27=0.59, P〉0.05)) The difference is not significant and the hypothesis is therefore accepted. The major impact on fishing was depletion in catches and low income earnings by fishermen with a resultant poor quality of living and livelihood. Oil spills, foreign vessels incursions and bunkering, vandalization of pipelines were identified sources of depletion in fish catches from the wild. The personal interviews and Focus Group Discussion (FGDs) showed that most heads of communities rely on the remuneration they get from the companies and refused to mobilize the fishermen for joint action against the oil companies. Mitigation measures usually carried out by the oil companies do not actually replenish the destroyed mangroves where breeding of fishes take place. The communities need the Government to institute high level surveillance of the high seas and monitor the activities of oil explorers as well as education of the communities on the effects of bunkering near shoreline.

    Description: This study was carried out to determine the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in Clarias anguillaris and Parachanna africana from Lake Geriyo Yola, Nigeria using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrophotometer. The results in (mg/kg, dry weight) showed different levels of Cr, Cu, Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn, and Pb in the two fish species. The order of heavy metals accumulated by C. anguillaris and P. africana are Cr〉Fe〉Zn 〉 Mn〉Cu〉Ni〉Pb and Ni〉Fe〉Zn〉Cu respectively. The levels of Cr, Mn and Ni in C. anguillaris and in Ni in P. africana were higher than WHO and FEPA recommended maximum permissible limits (MPL) in fish, while the levels of Zn, Cu and Pb were below the standards. The results suggest that Lake Geriyo has high pollution loads of these heavy metals in fishes and could pose a health hazards to man. Consequently, close monitoring of heavy metal loads in Lake Geriyo is recommended with a view to minimizing the risks to health of the population that depend on the lake for their water and fish supply.

    Description: Static bioassays were carried out in the laboratory for 96h to investigate the effect of Parateq a synthetic base mud on the fingerling of Orechromis niloticus and their microbial population. The fingerlings were exposed to different concentrations (0, 1000, 3000, 5000 and 9000Mg/l) of drilling fluid. Fish mortality data were recorded at 24, 48, 72 and 96h and analysed using Finney’s Probit Analysis method to calculate LC50 values (concentration of drilling fluid in water that will kill 50% of the fish population in 96 hours). The 96h LC50 was 2210Mg/l.The mortality increased with increase in concentration, while, the lethal times decreased as concentration increased. The bacterial biomass ranged from 1.59 x 108 to 6.0 x 106CFU/ml while fungal biomass ranged from1.0 x 103 to 2.1 x 104 CFU/ml. Results revealed that there was an increase in fungal biomass with increase in mud concentration and a decrease in bacterial biomass with increase in mud concentration.

    Description: A static bioassay method to determine the acute toxicity of the herbicide propanil to Oreochromis niloticus was investigated under Laboratory conditions for 96 hours exposure period. Concentrations of propanil used include: 0.0096ml/l, 0.0103ml/l, 0.011ml/l and 0.012ml/l respectively. The lethal concentration (LC50) value of propanil on fingerlings of Oreochromis niloticus was 0.0097ml/l for 96 hours of exposure. The regression equation for probit kill from propanil was found to be Y = 29.84 + 12.33* log conc. (r2 0.9951, Y = Probit kill). Fish showed various abnormal behaviours upon exposure to propanil. Immediate reaction was erratic swimming and tendency to jump out of the test bowl. Others include: restlessness, un-coordinated movement, vertical swimming, air gulping, equilibrium loss, a period of quiescence and eventually death.

    Description: In recent times there has been an upsurge in the culture of Tilapia in Nigeria resulting in increased demand for the fingerlings which is hardly satisfied. This is due to increasing demand for table size tilapia as food fish and under-sized tilapia in the fish meal and fish canning industries in Nigeria. Collection of Tilapia guineensis fingerlings from the wild, to augment hatchery production, has been the practice and this is subject to environmental fluctuations. Multivariate regression and correlation analyses of accumulated data were used to investigate the effects of changes in water quality parameters on abundance of fingerlings of Tilapia guineensis in a brackishwater habitat in Lagos. Dissolved oxygen (DO), salinity and secchi transparency were found to be the most dominant factors affecting the abundance of Tilapia guineensis fingerlings in the Lagos lagoon. Peak period of abundance was closely associated with period of low salinity (0.50%o to 5.60%o), which coincided with the period of low transparency and low DO in the rainy season. The correlation analyses of Tilapia guineensis fingerlings with the water quality parameters yielded the following correlation coefficients (r)- 0.598; (salinity); -0.644 (transparency); -0.710 (DO); -0.566; (temperature) and 0.129 (pH). The abundance of Tilapia guineensis fingerlings in the Lagoon was ultimately defined by a suitable regression equation. This result is expected to optimize the collection of fingerlings of Tilapia guineensis from the wild and boost food fish security in Nigeria and elsewhere.

    Description: The poor nature of most Agricultural processing practices in Nigeria have had adverse effect on our environment, and our aquatic resources are of no exception. This study was conducted to ascertain the median lethal concentration of the effluent within the 96 hours period and also to ascertain the extent of damage on some of the histological characteristics of the Clarias gariepinus juveniles. Juveniles of the Clarias gariepinus (mean weight 30g) were exposed to varied concentrations of the locust bean effluent under the standard laboratory conditions. Data on mortality corresponding to the various concentrations were subjected to the probit and logit transformations and used to calculate the LC50 graphically. The result shows the toxicity of the locust bean effluent to Clarias gariepinus juveniles as 0.089mg/L (treatment 4) during the period of study. Exposure to both the acute and subletheal concentrations resulted in a number of physiological dysfunction of the test fish. Observation of the fish under the tests revealed unbalanced swimming patterns loss of reflex, rapid opercular movements and gasping for air. Histopathological examination of the gill and liver of the treated fish showed signs of damage, ranging from Hypoxia, lesions, necrosis, fibrosis cell stasis and hyperplasia at the sublethal levels.

    Description: A total number of 166 specimens of Mugil cephalus caught from Epe Lagoon (low brackish/ freshwater) were examined for food and feeding habit and biometric features from November 2006 ? May 2007. The food of the species consisted mainly of algae (Bacillariophyta, Cyanophyta, Chlorophyta and Pyrrophyta) and detritus. The size range of fish examined were 12.4 ? 27.0cm (standard length) while the weight ranged from 22.40 ? 308.00g. The mean values of the biometric characters of Mugil cephalus did not reflect wide variations. The population dominant cohort in the lagoon represents the harvestable and marketable representative for a sustainable fishery and is a strong indication of potential for freshwater culture of this marine species.

    Description: This study investigated the fish diversity of Eko ? Ende and Owalla reservoirs, which are within the Osun river system in South West, Nigeria with a view to document biodiversity information needed for conservation and sustainable fisheries. Fish samples were collected monthly from the two reservoirs for one year, using a battery of multifilament gill nets. The data collected from each reservoir was analyzed for fish diversity. Information obtained on the forage / carnivore (F/C) ratio of fishes in each reservoir was used in measuring and comparing the ecological balance of the reservoirs. The results showed that eighteen fish species representing 16 genera and 10 families were identified in Eko ? Ende, while 17 fish species in 15 genera and 10 families were identified in Owalla during the period of study. Sixteen species (representing 84.2% of the total number of fish species) were common to both reservoirs and they were both dominated by Cichlids. Eko ? Ende Reservoir had greater fish diversity than the Owalla Reservoir. Shannon ? Weiner (H') index of fish diversity from Eko ? Ende reservoir was 2.37 while that from Owalla reservoir was 2.10. The forage / carnivore (F/C) ratios of the fishes from the two reservoirs showed that Eko ? Ende reservoir (F/C = 1.98) is ecologically balanced, while Owalla reservoir (F/C = 0.92) is not Owalla reservoir had a higher population of Hemichromis fasciatus (a predatory species). This reservoir also had more intensive fishing activities than the smaller Eko ? Ende reservoir. The study concludes on the need for a participatory research to alleviate the problem of ecological imbalance of fish species in Owalla reservoir.

    Description: The fatty acid composition of oil extracted from the viscera of African catfish, Clarias gariepinus caught from a fish farm in New Bussa was investigated with a view to prove their usefulness. A total of 20 fatty acids were obtained out of which five were identified. Lauric, Palmitic and Stearic acids were the main saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids respectively. The principal acids in the polyunsaturated group were Oleic and Linoleic acids. C. gariepinus viscera is constituted of polyunsaturated fatty acids which make it a valuable pharmaceutical raw material rather than waste.

    Description: African snakehead, Parachanna obscura is being considered as an emerging aquaculture candidate in Nigeria. The species is very palatable and has a good fillet quality. Study was conducted on the proximate composition of the species from Cross River, Nigeria. Samples of snakehead were analyzed for protein, fat, moisture, crude fibre and ash contents. The protein content of the species ranged from 21.03-22.03 with mean value of 21.5%. The fat content ranged from 17.1-17.4% with a mean value of 17.2 %. Moisture content ranged from 51.1-52.0 % with a mean value of 51.7%. Ash and crude fibre contents were very low. The protein content of Parachanna obscura compares favourably with that of other members of the family Channidae. The fat content is exceptionally high, making the species a good healing and recuperating agent for post-natal and post-operation patients. We strongly recommend the culture of Parachanna obscura in Nigeria and its meal for growing children.

    Description: Study was conducted to investigate lipid profile and metabolites in deformed (lost one or both pectoral fins) and healthy (both pectoral fins intact) African mud catfish C. gariepinus using three groups of adults male and female with a mean weight and standard length of 822.17~c 48.75g and 42.55~c.26cm respectively. The fish were allotted in replicates to 5000m capacity tanks based on the presence or absence of pectoral fins. 1mL blood was drawn from caudal peduncle of each fish by means of disposable sterile syringe and centrifuged at 1000rpm for 20min at 40C. Cholesterol and total protein were determined using the cholesterol FL (CT F400CH) and total protein (TP 0500CH) kits. Serum albumin and globulin concentrations were determined following methods described by Tietz (1995) and Buckley et al., (1976) while total serum bilirubin concentration was measured as outlined by AACC (American Association of Clinical Chemistry). Results indicate that male fish had relatively higher amount of triglyceride while female fish had higher amounts of cholesterol, reduction in globulin of the deformed fish, reduction in the concentrations of albumin in healthy fish, increase in total protein and globulin levels and high urea concentrations. No total bilurubin was detected in any of the fish sampled thus an indication of good liver function which means there was no liver dysfunction or liver damage in the fishes. It is evident therefore that abnormal fish can still perform better if they are given intense management because of the variability in their blood constituents with the normal fishes which is used to assess their health is minimal.     Description: The study assesses the enforcement of Inland Fisheries Regulations and Laws in Oyo State. This was done with a view to ascertaining the existence of regulations and laws that govern the inland waters of the state; the agents that are responsible to carry out the enforcement and the problems militating against the effectiveness of enforcement in the state, in order to provide relevant information for policy formulation and management of fishery resources. Information was gathered from secondary sources which include edicts for the state, journals and mass media reports. Personal interview with government fisheries officials and fishermen was also conducted. The research findings revealed that Oyo State has only fishing by-laws. The study also reveals that fishermen's co-operatives were the enforcement agents in the state. There was no record of arrest during the period of the study. Problems such as non- availability of surveillance and arresting equipment, lack of trained law enforcement fisheries officers were identified. The paper elaborates on possible management strategies of inland waters as a prelude towards increased fish production in the State.

    Description: A study was conducted in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital with the objective to investigate if fish trading could be a tool of poverty alleviation and socio-economic enhancement of the status of women in the household. A total of 120 correctly completed, structured and pre-tested questionnaires, out of the 150 administered to respondents, were retrieved for data analyses. Demographic data of the traders showed that all the respondents were women whose ages ranged from 15 to above 45 years. The ages of 33-45 years constituted 33.3% of the respondents while the age bracket of between 27-32 years constituted 23.3%. Majority (73.3%) were married while 25% were single-headed households (divorced or widowed). The study revealed that most of the respondents (approximately 61%) were able to meet their family expenditure jointly with their spouses while 28.3% of the respondents met the financial responsibilities of their families solely from the profit. Access to credit was found to be a major limitation. The study further revealed that 86.7% of the respondents would like to continue with the business because they were satisfied with the profit accruable to them from the trade.

    Description: This paper begins with a review of policy issues on status of women’s fundamental human rights and the effects on their optimal participation in fisheries development. The focus of the paper is on the importance of women in fisheries activities within the fisheries industry. Issues pertaining to gender inequality in the rural communities affecting women in the fisheries sector, and solutions to overcome some of these issues are discussed. The degree of participation of women in the fisheries sector is an overall reflection of the cultures, the laws of the country and the priority given by the state to ensure gender equity. Generally, women in Nigeria, especially those from depressed fisheries households, participate actively in many fisheries activities, including aquaculture. However, the lower status accorded to women in many of the communities in Nigeria means that their contribution to fisheries is undervalued and unrecognized. Issues that need to be addressed with regards to participation of women in fisheries which include sensitivity to gender issues in fishery, improve living conditions, promote programs relating to women, reconsidering the practice of relating fishing rights to their right to speak and others are discussed in the paper The paper also looks at the possibilities of articulating measures in sensitizing the womenfolks through education, especially in knowing their fundamental human rights as specified by the UN’s articles, especially ability to access micro-credit in fisheries activities, the nature of loans and alternative strategies to tackle the problem of small-scale credit to women in fisheries development in the nation.

    Description: Ifiayong is a small local village market where economically and commercially important fin and shellfishes are landed. It is located very close to the Five Star and Ibom Le Meridian Hotels at Nwaniba beach. Women functioned as transporters, sorters, processors, financiers, distributors and marketers of the thirty-two finfish families, seven shellfish species together with three turtles (reptiles) encountered at the study site. Socio-economic survey revealed that ninety-four women modally aged 46-55years (34; 36.17%) participated in the fisheries and frequently communicated in Efik (40; 42.55%), and were mostly drop-outs (40; 40.56%) in educational level and polygamous (35; 38.30%). The modal family size was 11-15 persons (45; 47.87%) who invested N 41,000 - N 50,000 (28; 29.79%). Problems encountered by these women together with the corresponding solutions and appropriate recommendations proffered were highlighted with the aim of making Ifiayong a revenue generating and tourism centre for Uruan Local Council and Akwa Ibom State Government.

    Description: Information on sex composition of fish/shellfish species is important in determining reproductive potentials and estimating size structure of a given stock. Sustainable fisheries management options and policies usually rely on this aspect of the reproductive biology. In the present study, the sex ratios of three palaemonid shrimps, Macrobrachium macrobrachion, Macrobrachium vollenhovenii and Macrobrachium equidens were studied over an annual cycle with respect to gear type. Male: female relationship for M. macrobrachion caught with beach seine, pushnet and trap were 1:2.2, 1:2.1 and 1:2.15 respectively, while the M:F ratios for M. vollenhovenii were 1:1.27 (beach seine), 1:1.32 (pushnet) and 1:1.64 (trap). The overall M:F ratios during the annual cycle were 1:2.15 (M. macrobrachion), 1:1.47 (M. vollenhovenii), and 1:1.74 (M. equidens). The monthly sex ratios indicated that there were more females than males during the period, except for M. equidens which had a ratio of 1:0.78 in the month of August. This is advantageous for the stock dynamics of the species, especially if the males could mate with more than one female during any reproductive season.

    Description: Nigeria is a coastal state with a coastline of 853km which lies between 4o 10’ to 6o20’N and longitude 2o 45’ to 8o 5’ E. The Nigerian coastline stretches from the Western border with the Republic of Benin to the eastern border with the Cameroon Republic. Some of the coastal characteristics which are of importance to the Nigerian inshore demersal fisheries are the presence of thirty-six estuaries and the prominent Niger Delta which provides suitable habitat for the penaeid shrimps, finfish and other living marine resources. Nigeria has a wide variety of shellfish resources ranging from the molluscs such as ark clams (Senila senilis), cockles costatum), periwinkle (Tympanotonus fuscatus) to the crustaceans which includes the penaeidae (shrimps), palaemonidae (prawns), portunidae (swimming crabs) and palinuridae (lobsters). Estimated potential yield for shellfishes is 51,760 metric tonnes. Shrimps and prawns have the highest commercial importance with production estimate between 10,000 to 15,000mt. More than half of this figure is exported to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries with shrimp market valued at US $8.6 billion. Nigeria generated about US $54million in 2005 from export of shrimps and prawns alone. This figure decreased to about US $38million in 2007 due to harassment by sea pirates and militant groups thus decreasing production from 13,767mt in 2006 to an alarming 5,995mt in 2007. However more research needs to be done to ascertain the true potential yield and environmental carrying capacity of the Nigerian shellfisheries to determine the maximum sustainable yield (MSY) so as to prevent over exploitation and consequently the destruction of the fishery. Research should also be carried out on other shellfish resources such as crabs, oysters, periwinkles and lobsters as appreciable income could be earned from their sales and export.

    Description: This study evaluated the effect of varying smoking durations of 6, 6.5, 7 and 7.5 hours on the microbiological quality and percentage moisture content of cold-smoked Atlantic Cod, Gadus morhua. The fish sample were cold-smoked using the traditional drum oven. Four batches of the smoked fish were stored in metal baskets at ambient temperatures for a period of 12 days and assessed for Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli loads, Mould count, Total Plate Count and Total Coliform Count. Analyses of the smoked fish samples were carried out at the initial stage (day 0) and subsequently every alternate days (i.e. days 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12). Significant variations (P 〈 0.05) were obtained for all the microbial counts on the four smoked fish samples. The best microbiologically stable cold-smoked samples were that smoked at the longest duration of 7.5 hours. This produced the least mean microbial load range of TPC (1.50 x 103 - 2.00 x 105cfu/g); TCC varied from 0.0MPN/g to 12.0 MPN/g ; Mould count (1.32 x103 - 2.55 x 105 cfu/g) and Staphylococcus aureus (3.0 x103 - 1.35 x 105cfu/g) while percentage moisture content ranged between 25.3% to 15.2%. All the samples tested negative to Escherichia coli.

    Description: The study examined the opinion of fishermen and fish buyers on middlemen of Doro Baga fish market. 240 respondents were used as samples with the aid of structured questionnaire, using stratified random sampling technique. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the data obtained. The study revealed that majority of the fishermen (75%) highly depend on these selling brokers to sell their fish for them because their financial support comes from the selling brokers, moreover they do not have a stand in the market. Among the fish buyers, especially those that buy directly for consumption, see the brokers as people that create confusion during transaction. But 55% of the fish buyers believed that brokers keep the business flowing through their support of the fishermen. While the major problem of the fishermen with the selling brokers is getting the loan from the brokers especially when the fisherman is new in the area or business and on the other side, brokers only give the fish buyers grace of two to three days when they don’t have money, after that the broker would sell the fish to another buyer. These problems can be solved when a strong relationship is established between the fishermen, selling brokers, and fish buyers, or when the government intervenes by giving loans to the fishermen.

    Description: The paper examined gender and fisheries of Lake Kainji, Nigeria. The study highlights socio economic characteristics of women involved in Kainji Lake fisheries, important issues about gender and fisheries. It reveals that the categories of women in the Kainji Lake fisheries are in the middle age of 31 to 40 years with very low educational background. It also indicates that fish processing has been the most prominent activity of women in fisheries of Lake Kainji and constitute about 60 percent of the women. The study concludes that women play significant roles in all aspects of fisheries in Lake Kainji. Importantly, women’s roles span reproduction and production.

    Description: In the study and understanding of fish biology, characterization and morphology, the length-weight relationship is of great importance. The genus Hydrocynus, is of high economic importance to the fisheries of Lake Kainji. This study investigated their length-weight relationship to establish the growth pattern of species within this genus. The ‘b’ values of the length-weight relationship for these species are less than 3. There was negative allometric growth (b〈3) for all samples of the Hydrocynus species. The correlation coefficients (r) are 0.9713 and 0.9888, for Hydrocynus forskali and H.brevis respectively. Condition factors ranged from 1.313 for H. forskali to 1.431 for H. brevis.

    Description: Changes in biochemical properties of freshwater prawn stored with two ice conditions Without Direct Contact with Ice (DCI) and Without Direct Contact with Ice (WCI) for day 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 were investigated. Proximate composition defined in terms of moisture increased for the DCI as storage days increases but relatively constant with treatments with WCI. Values of TVB-N (mgN/100g) in prawn stored with DCI had inverse relationship with storage days but increased with storage days in the WCI. Changes in the values of ash and crude protein were relatively constant as the storage days increased in both treatments. Ice treatments recorded little changes in between storage days for fats. Values of NPN mgN/100g decreased with days of storage with DCI but increased as the storage increased with WCI. These results obtained in this study showed that ice storage may have contrasting values and importance on the biochemical properties of the freshwater prawn.

    Description: The paper is a review of the curriculum, staffing, equipment, field and laboratory requirements prescribed by the National Universities Commission (NUC) for training of Fisheries graduates. This is made as these are guidelines against which Fisheries programmes, now being proliferated in many Nigerian tertiary institutions, can be evaluated for possible accreditation. The critique shows that some courses are highly under-weighted e.g. “Aquatic Flora and fauna” as a 2 credit unit. There is a high degree of overlap between courses. Some are not clearly and sharply delineated, defined or described. Staff needs are not defined or described. Staff needs are not defined in terms of core course areas of specialization. Limnology & Oceanography have their descriptions restricted to physico ? chemical features and not viewed in the desired comparative perspective. Suggestions are made on a wider listing of equipment, field laboratory, and library need to sharpen the NUC guideline. A review committee is recommended.

    Description: The paper traced the evolution of piracy and pointed out that the fishing industry in Nigeria alone has recorded over 15 deaths and loss of vessels, equipments, fish/fishery products valued over N3 billion to these attacks between 2006 and April 2009. The paper further highlighted that between February 2009 and April 2010 the fishing industry has recorded about 80 attacks. These have affected the fishing industry which operated over 250 registered trawlers in 2003/2004 which has now been reduced to 150 trawlers. To ameliorate this problem the paper highlighted steps taken in dealing with the menace of piracy. The paper concluded that good laws are a necessary pre-condition for the achievement of maritime security. However, they will only be effective if there is the political will and the practical capacity among the government, relevant agencies and stakeholders.

    Description: Sea and continental shelf belonging to Vietnamese EEZ has an estimated area of more than 1 mil. km2, this is three times greater than land. Sea and continental shelf is becoming an important part in fishery aspect, this is where many marine products are existed. Vietnam is situated in the West Pacific Ocean and classified into four regions. The North Part, Center Part, South East and South West of Vietnam. The pelagic and demersal fish comprise of 80-90% of the total yield, in addition there are valuable resources such as shrimp, lobster and squids, all are important export items. Two major climatic seasons occur in these areas depending on the winds: the North-East (November to March) and the South-West monsoon (May to September), April and October, those are transferred months. Typhoons move from the East to the West or North-West are frequent in summer and greatly affect the meteorological conditions of the sea waters. The fish species composition in the Vietnamese Sea waters is typical for tropical fish fauna (Approx. 2000 fish species, in addition there are 105 Shrimp species and 53 Squid and Cuttle fish species have been found). Resources Standing Stock of both pelagic and demersal fish in the Vietnamese Sea Waters are about 3.0-3.5 million tons, the exploitation potential amounting to 1.2-1.4 million tons. In the inshore areas the resources are being overexploited, while offshore resources remain underexploited. Resources protection and fishery policies are the main tasks of the Vietnamese fisheries. Fishing ordinance and regulations have become an important role in the Vietnamese Sea Water.

In Thailand efforts to conserve the fisheries resources such as fisheries regulations by means of close area, close season and mesh size limitation are being enforced. Training and extension programs for fishermen and other people concerned including many conservative projects have been done by the Department of fisheries.

    Description: Gear selectivity has been a gold-medal goal for research and development in Fishing Technology, for the purpose to increase the target catch and to decrease the bycatch. In case of trawl fisheries, the gear designing by mesh size or shape modifications were only the tools for improving the species/size selectivity. Another approach for the aimed trawl is also practical through the strategy in locating the best fishing ground by use of catch data bases and acoustic devices. The better understanding on fish behaviour can be useful not only for both of the conventional strategies, but also for developing the bycatch reduction devices (BRDs) as the modification of the present gear designs. The aim of gear selectivity in shrimp trawls is classified into 4 categories as Monster excluder, Trash Excluder, Shrimp/Fish Separator, and Species/Size Selection. Another approach to classify the selectivity function is according to the positions for exclusion/selection, as between warps, sweep lines or wings, around net mouth, and in front or rear part of codend. Up to now, varieties of BRDs are in practical use with ideas on size filtration and utilization of behaviour differences in species and sizes. For the size filtration purpose, the mesh size against the body circumference or the grid spacing against the body width inside the codend can be defined as the passive BRDs which may cause the stress and injury for escapees through the gear contact. The active BRDs ahead of the trawl mouth may be the best tool as the conservation strategy without the gear contact damage, by means of understanding for avoidance ability in gear recognition and swimming performance of target and bycatch species.

    Description: By catch focused here is incidental catch to be discarded at sea and those utilised is dealt little. This is because, as widely stated, by catch is not necessarily a negative practice as there are many fisheries which are feasible with by catch in addition to the principal species. It is important to segregate by catch and discard issues. It may provoke unnecessary and unproductive contradiction, if by catch as a whole is dealt in the same line with discards. This report firstly overviews the structure of the fishing industry of Japan and its statistics in view of its sectors and landing. This aims at illustrating its basic characters and changes for the recent years. Secondly, the report summarises available information on discards from a sector to sector. It estimates, then, the amounts of discards by individual sectors and, subsequently, the total discard by the Japanese marine capture fishery as a whole. The last part of the report discusses improvement of methodology in discard researches. In this report, only publicised data were utilised for discard estimation with exceptions of those recorded by the author or the author's group. Discard ratios were either directly adopted or secondarily evaluated from those records.

    Description: Bycatch in Australia s Northern Prawn Fishery (NPF) is extremely diverse in both species and size composition. This makes developing responsible fishing practices to reduce the amount of bycatch in the NPF, a complex process. During this study we assessed the performance of Bycatch Reduction Devices (BRDs) that could be used in the NPF. We tested 16 different BRDs which can be grouped into one of 3 categories: (1) inclined grids (2) fish exclusion devices and (3) square-mesh codends. Four inclined grids were tested during our study. All the grids were extremely effective at excluding large animals such as sharks, stingrays and sea turtles. Three different fish exclusion devices were tested. Fish exclusion ranged between 0 and 39 percent, depending on the device. Prawn retention rates for both inclined grids and fish exclusion devices varied between devices. Two sizes of square-mesh codend (38 mm and 45 mm) were also tested. More than 95% of market-sized prawns were retained. Fish exclusion varied greatly between species. Optimum exclusion of bycatch for the NPF could be provided by a combination of devices from each of the three categories.

    Description: Ghostfishing is the fishing activity of lost or abandoned fishing gears or theirarts. This invisible fishing activity of unknown number of fishing gears may have contributed the global depletion of fisheries resources. Gillnets and pots are two gear types known to have severe ghostfishing problems. Synthetic materials making up gillnets and pots can last for many years when left in water. There are no worldwide survey or estimates of annual loss of gillnets or pots, but the number is likely in millions. Prevention, clean up, de-ghosting technological research, and awareness training are some of the strategies which can be adopted to curb the ghostfishing problem. This presentation will review the problems of ghostfishing in gillnet and pot fisheries, actions taken by some countries to counteract gear losses and ghostfishing, and future prospectus in combating ghostfishing problems.

    Description: The concept of responsible fisheries matters all parties involved in fishing and other related activities that utilize or deal with marine and freshwater resources. The Code of Responsible Fisheries as developed by FAO makes all involved in fisheries aware of what they do, how they do it and consequences of their activities. One of the most important aspects of responsible fisheries initiatives of any countries or regions is responsible fisheries training so that stakeholders are well aware of their activities and possible consequences. Canada is one of the countries making significant progresses in training as well in research and development as related to responsible fisheries. The effort of Canada is broadly based covering the Atlantic and Pacific coasts as well as inland waters. This presentation overviews harvesting-related responsible fisheries guidelines and training initiatives in Canada with emphasis on a new responsible fisheries training program being developed by the Fisheries and Marine Ins.

    Description: Because of the importance of shrimp trawling fisheries in a number of countries in Asia and the Indian Ocean region and recommendations for more research work in the field of selectivity, in particular through more cooperation between countries, a Cooperative research network in the Asia and Indian Ocean region on selective tropical shrimp trawling was initiated in December 1995 by the Fishing Technology Service of FAO. The overall objective of this on-going networking programme is: in the short term, to gather accurate information on on-going shrimp trawling and catches, data which is necessary for further improvement of the selectivity of these fisheries, and to review recent progress in the region in this field; in the medium term, to facilitate further research on the subject. Details of the activities proposed within the programme are given, as well as the expected participation for its execution. Progress, up to May 1997, is briefly reported. Activities such as field surveys in several countries and a regional workshop soon were not too difficult to arrange. However, cooperation for research work at sea with the participation of experts from several countries is not so easy.

    Description: This paper presents species distributions, composition and biological parameters of major fish species caught from the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia during the one week surveys made in pre- and post-Northeast monsoon seasons. The fish species rankings changed over time and at different depth strata. The catch rates were decreased toward deeper water. An appearance of smaller fish group was greater during the post-Northeast than pre-Northeast monsoon season. Fish populations occurred at both seasons were represented from different spawning group. Their growths were isometric form in weight.

    Description: To obtain more information on the distribution of dinoflagellate cysts in Thai and Malaysian waters, the surface sediment samples of 48 stations in the Gulf of Thailand and the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia were collected by M.V. SEAFDEC during the research cruise in September 1995 and repeated again in April 1996. Cysts of 20 species belonging to Goniolacoid, Tuberculodinioid and Peridinioid were found in the surface sediments collected from both cruises. Spiniferites spp. (=Gonyaulax spp.) were the dominant cyst in Thai and Malaysian waters. No cysts of harmful species were observed during this study.

    Description: Due to gross over-exploitation and a paucity of adequate information on fishery oceanographic, environmental and biological conditions that sustain the fisheries of the South China Seas region, the fisheries have become greatly impoverished. The deficiency in scientific intelligence has also circumscribed all attempts at substantive and tangible planning or management of fisheries throughout the region. The NAGA Oceanographic Expedition of 1959-1961, organized jointly by the United States of America, The Kingdom of Thailand and the erstwhile Republic of Vietnam, achieved pioneering oceanographic work in the Gulf of Thailand and the South China Seas. This invaluable scientific data acquisition was not pursued for a number of reasons, and thus, a holistic and dependable profile of oceanographic conditions and their seasonal variations and patterns failed to develop. Perceiving the vital importance and the deficiency of fundamental information and data for fisheries planning and management, the SEAFDEC Training Department (TD) and the Marine Fisheries Resources Development and Management Department (MFRDMD), jointly launched an inter-Department Collaborative Research program in 1995, to evaluate the fisheries resources of the South china Sea as a basal objective in the development of sustainable fisheries.

    Description: The effect of exposing juveniles of Heterobranchus bidorsalis (Geoffroy St. Hilaire, 809) (mean weight: 15.02~c:0.14g) to different concentrations of Bonny-light crude oil (BLCO) on alanine kinase and alanine transaminase activities were studied. The exposure of the fish to 1.00, 2.00, 4.00, 8.001L-1 BLCO and a control (0.00m1 L-1) within 4 days toxicity and 42 days recovery periods indicated that the significant increases (P〈0.05; P〈0.01) in the serum alanine transaminase (HCAT) activities were dependent on the BLCO concentrations. The reduced SAK and (HCAK) activities noticed within the first 14 days recovery period implied that the removal of the oil pollutant probably lowered the pressure on the SAK and HCAK to participate in the metabolism of ingested carbohydrate. The significant increases in the serum alanine transminase (SAT) and the hepatic cytosolic alanine transminase (HCAT) activities in the fish corresponded with the trend shown by the SAK and HCAK activities. Generally, the increased activities of SAK, HCAK, SAT and HCAT in H. bodorsalis juveniles in this study might be due to a shift in the carbohydrate metabolism of the fish caused probably by the crude oil exposure.

    Description: Investigations were carried out to study the food, feeding ecology and condition index of the brackish river prawn, 〈i〉Macrobrachium macrobrachion〈/i〉 (HERKLOTS, 1851). One thousand, nine hundred and ninety-seven live specimens which comprised of individuals representing all size groups of the prawn were studied. The specimens were obtained from the commercial artisanal catches at Nsidung Beach along Calabar River (40301N and 80201E). Although algae formed the bulk of the diet of the prawn with 44.61% occurrence, other food items: detritus (24.30%), crustacean remains (23.14%), mud/sand particles (6.23%), fish bones and scales (2.14%) and small worms (0.21 %), were also consumed. The sub-adult and adult prawns respectively exhibited similar condition index of 0.98, while the youngs showed a condition index of 0.82. The significance of the similarities in condition indices between the sub-adult prawns and the varied condition indices among the young, sub-adult and adult prawns in addition to the exhibition of an overlapping feeding ecology by the prawn is discussed.

    Description: The purpose of this paper is to determine a suitable type of Turtle Excluder Device (TED) attached to the body of a shrimp trawl to avoid inflicting harm on marine turtles. Seven types of the TEDs were tested; three brought from U.S.A. namely the Anthony Weedless, the Super Shooter and the Bent Pipe, two brought from Mexico namely the Georgia Jumper and the Mexican, and two were designed by Kasetsart University and SEAFDEC/TD, Thailand, namely the Thai-KU and Thai Turtle Free Device (TTFD), respectively. No turtles were caught in any of the areas off Chumporn and Songkhla during a total of 120 hauls. The escape rate by weight of the Super Shooter and TTFD were found to be 2.67% and 1.80% for day-time operation and 1.91% and 1.04% during the night, respectively, this indicated that they were the most efficient TED. The fuel consumption for all TEDs showed little difference. In terms of convenience in operation, the TTFD was found to be the best and the most suitable TED for the use by Thai fishermen.

    Description: Presented in the paper are the two devices that were developed by some states in the southeast United States to reduce fisheries bycatch in shrimp trawls. These were Turtle Excluder Device (TED) and Bycatch Reduction Device (BRD). First, the use of TEDs were strongly resisted by some fishermen, however, when it was mandatory and regulations effectively enforced, fishermen found that it improved shrimp production and the quality of catch. Moreover, also presented in the paper are the two bycatch reduction devices that are being regulated into use in United States, the Fisheye BRD, and the Extended Funnel BRD that are found to effectively reduce the finfish bycatch.

    Description: The following paper is made up of three field trip reports covering the testing and commercial use of the Australia Trawl Efficiency Device (AusTED). The work was carried out in the Northern Prawn Fishery (NPF) aboard five NPF vessels between July 95 and November 96. The study was undertaken in accordance with the program outlined in the FRDC funded project Development and application of AusTED in the Australia trawl industry. The AusTED performed exceptionally well. In fact big catches of prawns, fish and large marine creatures appear to be what the AusTED requires to fully show off it s value as a trawl efficiency device. It excluded all large creatures encountered while maintaining prawn catches. The reduction in small fish was as high as 60% but averaged around the 30% mark. Testing of the AusTED was carried out on trawlers fishing for tiger prawns and endeavour prawns in the Gulf of Carpentaria (GOC) and red leg banana prawns in the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf (JBG). The following reports cover catch comparisons between standard nets and those rigged with AusTED. Recommendations and personal opinions from NPF skippers operating in the Gulf of Carpentaria and the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf are also included.

    Description: The fisheries of many countries in Asia are heavily reliant upon fisheries as a major source of food protein with fish consumption levels two to three times higher than those of western countries and collectively, the region harvests approximately forty percent of the world's marine fishes. With many of the region's fish resources fully exploited or over fished, identification, quantification and reduction of biological waste in commercial fisheries has become a regional priority. However, given the complexity of multi-species fisheries and fish utilization practices as well as the technological difficulties already encountered make finding practical solutions by individual researchers or institutes extremely difficult. Within the region exist human resources, research and development facilities and equipment that if shared could significantly speed up the process of biological waste mitigation. This paper, identifies some of the current problems associated with biological waste mitigation and proposes that resolving these issues is best achieved through information, facility and human resource sharing. An initial target of setting minimum standards for fishing trials, experimental protocols and analytical techniques is proposed with a second step being the establishment of information databases of technologies to reduce biological waste. Administrative support, strategic planning and management of regional databases and the activities of scientists and technologists can only be carried out by a regional agency such as SEAFDEC or ICLARM. International cooperation between agencies, institutes and researchers is a pre-requisite for long term resolution of technological problems.

    Description: Investigations on horizontal and vertical distribution in levels of total organic matter contents (TOM), acid volatile sulfides contents (AVS), and water contents (WC) of bottom sediments from the eastern and western parts of the Gulf of Thailand and the eastern part of the Peninsular Malaysia have been carried out during 5-28 September 1995 and 24 April to 17 May 1996 by M.V. SEAFDEC. The overall results indicated comparatively low amount of organic matters and sulfides deposited in the sediments. Considering on the vertical profiles, coupled efforts of low rate of sedimentation of the organic matters and high rate of their decomposition should play an important role providing fast diagenesis of their organic substances. Nevertheless, the particulate matters which had settled onto the sea bed and formed the sediments can be remarkably observed to accumulate in two major zones in the Gulf of Thailand; one in the central part of the upper gulf (around Station 7) and another one in the western part of the gulf, near Samui Island (around Station 23). Such an accumulation pattern was considered to be directly controlled by the bottom topography and current effort. The accumulation of organic materials there also implied the mode of biological fishery resources. High abundant of organisms in the benthic community should be observed. Moreover, according to biogeochemical interaction between the sediment-water interface, phytoplankton production in the overlying water column should be enhanced and, consequently, a congregation of organisms in the upper trophic levels especially those of fish species were accordingly expected. Future assessment for development of the fishery resources in the Gulf of Thailand and the eastern part of Peninsular Malaysia has been discussed.

    Description: Primary production in the Gulf of Thailand and the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia was determined from in situ fluorescence, light intensity in September-October, 1995 cruise, and from the uptake of radioactive carbon incubation in the October, 1996 cruise. The primary production rate was found to be 0.20-0.61 and 0.29-0.47gC/m2/day for the Gulf of Thailand and the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, respectively. At nearshore stations, higher rate of primary production was found at sea surface, and it gradually decreased with depth. However, at offshore stations, where subpycnocline chlorophyll maximum was found, the rate was increased again at this layer.

    Description: The collaborative research on species composition and diversity of fishes in the Gulf of Thailand and eastern Malay Peninsula was carried out by R. V. Pramong 4 in Thai waters and K.K. Manchong, K.K. Mersuji in Malaysian waters, through otter-board trawling surveys. Taxonomic surveys also done for commercial fishes in the markets of some localities. Totally 300 species from 18 orders and 89 families were obtained. Their diversity are drastically declined, compare to the previous survey from 380 species trawled. The station point of off Ko Chang, eastern Gulf of Thailand and off Pahang River shown significantly high diversity of fishes 57 and 73 species found. Demersal species form the main composition of the catch. The lizardfish Saurida undosquamis, S. miropectoralis, the bigeye Priacanthus tayenus and P. macracanthus, the rabbitfish Siganus canaliculatus and hairtail Trichiurus lepturus were the most abundant economic species found in mast of the sampling stations. Fishing efforts were 34 hours and 49 hours for the cruises I and II, with average catch per hour of 12.04 and 34.79 kg respectively. The maximum catch per hour was 175.3 kg in Malaysian waters, the minimum was 4.33 kg in Thai waters. The average percentage of economic fishes is higher than that of trash fishes in Malaysian waters, it ranged from 55.45 to 81.92 %.

    Description: A study on the macrobenthos profile was conducted using the research vessel MV SEAFDEC in almost all parts of the Gulf of Thailand and the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. A total of 44 stations were located within the Gulf of Thailand and 37 within that of East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Two cruises were carried out during the pre-and post-north-east monsoon. Macrobenthos showed greater density in Malaysian waters during the pre-monsoon period with 2500 individuals (at an average 67.6 individuals/m2) compared to the Gulf of Thailand which showed 860 individuals (average 19.5 individuals/m2). However, sampling after the monsoon has indicated quite the reverse, with 2680 individuals (60.9 individuals/m2) found in the Gulf of Thailand compared to 620 individuals (16.8 individuals/m2) in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. All samples from both cruises were dominated by polychaete worms, followed by crustacea. Other groups such as echinoderms, molluscs, nemertians and sipunculids were also observed in lesser quantities. In terms of diversity, the Gulf of Thailand showed less families/taxa before the monsoon (with 20 families) than after the monsoon (with 35 families). The reverse holds true for the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia when 33 families were uncovered before the monsoon compared to 26 families after the monsoon. Among the dominant families/taxa were the polychaetes Cirratulidae, Orbiniidae, Eunicidae and Maldanidae; caridean shrimps and ophiuroids (brittle star).

    Description: Acoustic resource surveys were conducted by M/V SEAFDEC in the Gulf of Thailand and off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia from September 5 to 28, 1995 for pre-NE monsoon season and from April 24 to May 17, 1996 for post-NE monsoon season, using the scientific echosounder FQ-70 (Furuno Electric Co.). Collected raw values of backscattering strength (SV) from the 200 kHz were carefully corrected and filtered to eliminate the influence of plankton. These corrected SV values were classified into pelagic and demersal fish, and were used to estimate the biomass of pelagic and demersal multispecies fish. Biomass of pelagic and demersal fish for each season was only estimated in the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia within Malaysian EEZ waters due to the availability of previous fisheries statistics and biological data. Dominant species were selected based on the fisheries statistics and landing place survey. Length (L) and weight were obtained from previous literatures. Target strength (TS) of these dominant species were calculated as TS =20 log (L) -66. The distribution of the SV values for pelagic fish showed a distinct difference between preand post- monsoon seasons. Greater concentrations of SVs were observed from offshore compared to the nearshore waters in pre-monsoon season. The distribution for the demersal fish showed that there was no clear difference between pre- and post-monsoon. The estimated biomass of multi-species fish off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia within Malaysian EEZ for the pre-and post-monsoon seasons was 4.4x105 tonnes (2.3x105 tonnes of pelagic fish and 2.1x 105 tonnes of demersal fish) and 3.1x105 tonnes (1.9x105 tonnes of pelagic fish and 1.2x 105 tonnes of demersal fish), respectively.

    Description: The abundance of fisheries resources and their structure in the Gulf of Thailand and East coast of Peninsular Malaysia were investigated during the SEAFDEC Collaborative Research Survey. Hydro-acoustic surveying using a scientific echo sounder model FQ-70 was conducted to estimate the fish abundance and biomass. Two survey cruises were carried out by M.V.SEAFDEC during the pre and post-northeast monsoon seasons. The scientific echo-sounder was equipped with an echo-integrator and two quasi-ideal beam transducers with operating frequencies of 50 and 200 kHz. The volume back scattering strength (SV) of the fish schools were collected from the layer of water at a depth from 10 m to the bottom along the track of survey cruise. The estimated biomass measured by high frequency shows clearly that a high concentration is observed at the upper and middle part of the Gulf of Thailand and the border area between Thailand and Malaysia waters during the pre-northeast monsoon season. Whereas, high biomass concentration shows only in the middle part of the Gulf of Thailand during the post-northeast monsoon season.

    Description: Major problems that beset the Philippines fisheries sector are degradation of coastal habitats and environmental damage; depleting of marine resources; poverty among municipal fisher folks; low productivity of aquaculture; and limited utilization of the offshore waters by Philippines commercial fishermen. The Government as well as the academe, NGOs/POs and the local government units (LGUs) is implementing integrated Coastal Resource Management (CRM) programs to address the problems of the sector. Policies related to resource management have been instituted to assist the different agencies and organizations in carrying out their roles and responsibilities in CRM. There is no straight rule in implementing an integrated CRM program. Its success depends upon the infractions between and among the stakeholders of the coastal area. CRM components such as credit for alternative/supplemental livelihood and law enforcement do not fare well in some coastal communities, while components such as public education, capability building, habitat enhancement/rehabilitation and people s participation are carried out successfully. Experiences of the government sector, LGU, NGO/PO and the academe show success stories that inspire them to continue with CRM initiatives while failures encountered serve as reminders of the pitfalls to avoid when implementing an integrated management of coastal resources.

There is a plausible under fishing in adopting CBFM, Supportive institutional framework, strong local organization, exclusivity of fishing against outsiders, sedentary/inshore fisheries, and recognition on fisherman social status are positive factors advocating the adoption of CBFM while the negative factors are the opposite, plus heterogeneity of fishermen and problems of equity in access to fishing. Economics of CBFM is actually the distribution of control power due to market failure. There are external elements given to the local fishermen who can only control their internal decisions. The optimum is obtained where marginal benefit of CBFM equals marginal cost. Factors to be considered are transaction costs, including exclusivity and governance costs. In adopting CBFM maximizing resource rent must be combined with minimizing transaction costs for an optimum fishing level.

    Description: Some aspects of the reproductive biology of the three dominant species in the 〈i〉Macrobrachium〈/i〉, fishery of the Cross River Estuary namely 〈i〉M. macrobrachion, M. vollenhovenii and M. equidens〈/i〉, were studied. Due to the difficulties associated with identifing the onset of maturity of 〈i〉Macrobrachium〈/i〉 males, only the females were used in the study. The size massive maturation (TL〈sub〉m〈/sub〉 in mm) for 〈i〉M. macrobrachion〈/i〉 was 68.83 (CI: 66.63-71.10 mm) at corresponding age of 6.61 (CI: 6.28-6.96) months. TL〈sub〉m〈/sub〉 for 〈i〉M. vollenhovenii〈/i〉 was 106.74 (CI: 102.81. 110.81), at a corresponding age of 7.42 (CI: 7.01-7.82) months, while TL〈sub〉m〈/sub〉 for 〈i〉M. equidens〈/i〉 was 59.09 (CI: 57.50-60.72), at the age of 7.70 (CI: 7.39-8.03) months. Average fecundity for 〈i〉M macrobrachion, M. vollenhovenii and M. equidens〈/i〉 were 2490 (range 270-4710), 23,943 (range 1744-46,141), and 2359 (range 400-4318) eggs per female, respectively. The larger females had more eggs than the smaller ones. Understanding of the reproductive biology of these biological species is indispensable for efficient management of their resources.

    Description: Between October 2000 and March 2001, a preliminary study on the aspects of the biology of 〈i〉Parachanna obscura〈/i〉, was investigated. Sex ratio revealed female preponderance [X〈sup〉2〈/sup〉=4,7338, df =1, p〈0.05]. There was a seasonality in sex ratio during the wet season whereas there was seasonality increase in number of females over males [x〈sup〉2〈/sup〉 = 4.735, df = 1, p = 〈 0.05]. A curvilinear plot was obtained in the regression of the total length and total weight TW = 0.018621 TL〈sup〉2697〈/sup〉,n= 408, r = 0.869, [p〈0.001]. Trophic spectrum of 〈i〉C. obscura〈/i〉 [size range 9.0 18.0 cm comprises food items. The items were re-classified into seven major groups consisting of detritus [coarse fine detritus], fish juvenile and remains of fish], Insecta [un-identified adult and remains of insects, macrophyte materials, mud, Oligochoetes [earth-worm], and abiogenic sand. Fish, insects Oligochoetes were eaten as primary foods items. There was a complete ingestion of the array the dietaries by both sexes. Exception of one item [coarse detritus] during the wet season,〈i〉 P. obscura〈/i〉 consumed all the dietaries during the seasons. Nevertheless, the later season increased in the ingestion of 9 out of the 10 items in conformity with optimal foraging theory. 〈i〉Parachal obscura〈/i〉 is considered as piscivore-insectivore-invertivore in feeding habits. In the wake of doubts about the viability and prospects of aquaculture, farming of 〈i〉P. obscura〈/i〉 is a possibility. This species possesses a number of positive attributes with regards to aquaculture. It is likely that efforts to culture this hardy carnivorous and fast-growing fish will spread in the coming years in Nigeria, breeders and fish farmers will likely give it a chance.

    Description: The artisanal shrimp fishery of the Cross River Estuary, SE Nigeria is exploited with three main shrimping gears, viz: beach seine, push net and trap. While the beach seine and push net are active gears, the trap is passive. Catch composition from the three gears was analysed for species diversity, catch contribution in weight and sex ratio. The trap showed the lowest species diversity, with only three Macrobrachium (M. macrobrachion, M. vollenhovenii and M. equidens) species represented in the catch, while Callinectes crab and Eleotris were by-catch. The complete absence of Penaeus notialis from trap catches throughout the sampling period of eighteen months was remarkable, while M. equidens was very low in abundance. The beach seine and push net had similar species composition in their catches with more than thirteen shrimp species represented. The catch per unit effort for the three gears varied, with beach seine contributing 46.13%, push net 24.41 % and trap 29.46%, of the overall catch. The sex ratio (male: female) was 1 :2.2 (beach seine), 1 :2.1 (push net), 1:2.15 (trap) for M. macrobrachion, 1 :1.27 (beach seine), 1 :1.32 (push net) and 1 :1.64 (trap), for M. vollenhovenii. The size structure showed more juveniles (below 40 mm) in beach seine and push net. Analysis of catches from the three gears showed some complexities as active and passive gears manifested extreme characteristics in their selection. In managing this fishery, therefore, a middle-of-the road option would be necessary, and we recommend the closed season.

    Description: Intraspecific hybridization studies were carried out in three strains of Clarias gariepinus obtained from three ecological zones in Nigeria: rainforest; (Onitsha strain), Guinea savanna, Kainji strain) and Montanne vegetation, (Jos strain) with the aim of improving the growth performance of the species. Nine genetic mating combinations were generated from the three strains and were successfully induced under controlled hatchery conditions. Indoor and outdoor growth parameters were monitored. The 19 days growth indoors showed significant difference (P〈O.05) in weight gain. Highest weight gain (2.76g) was obtained in Jos parental strain and cross involving female Jos and male Kainji, while the least was recorded in female Kainji and male Onitsha (0.062g). The 50 days outdoor growth performance also showed significant difference between the genetic mating combinations. Maximum weight gain (464.57g) was observed in female Kainji and male Onitsha, while female Jos and male Kainji gave 263.94g weight gain. There was no significant difference (P〉0.05) in length in both indoor and outdoor rearing. Based on this study, the cross-involving female Kainji and male Onitsha is recommended for fingerling production of Clarias gariepinus.

    Description: A 3.6m length overall (LOA) flat bottom canoe similar to the one commonly used for fishing in Kainji Lake, but with some modifications, was designed and constructed using locally available materials. The improvements/modifications over the local canoe include inbuilt insulated fish hold rigid frames for adequate reinforcement, proper shrift of butt and use of good quality glue for water tightness. The canoe's light displacement (empty weight) was 95kg, which was similar to local canoe of same size. When placed on water a draft of 18cm was achieved which is 40.9% of its depth (44cm). The capacity of the canoe was 270kg, a fish hold capacity 41, 400cm3 which is absent from the type presently used, and the total production cost of N22,000.00 which was not beyond the reach of an average fisher folk of the Kainji basin. The modifications on the canoe resulted in provision of fish preservation facility, increased strength and improved water tightness, hence reduction in fish spoilage on fishing ground, increased life span of canoe and safety of fisher folk while aboard fishing.

    Description: An investigation of the socio-economic potential of the inhabitants living around Oyan lake (40km2 surface area) was carried out between January 2001 and August 2002. Five hundred (500) copies of the questionnaires were distributed among the people living around the entire stretch of the lake and 283 people responded. The commercial fish landing estimates showed that the total landing for the entire period of study was 4,628 (number) weighing 1,856.6kg. Mean catch per boat per sampling day (number and weight) was estimated to be 113 and 4.28kg respectively. Therefore the estimated annual fish landing (number and weight) per boat from 317 fishing days were 35,821 and 1,356.7kg respectively. The potential annual fish yield from commercial fishery for the lake was 147.5 tonnes while the total number of active boats recorded for the entire lake was 43,241.

    Description: This study examined the factors affecting changing livelihood strategies of artisanal fisherfolks in inland fishing communities in Delta State, Nigeria. The sample size of 169 respondents was selected through a simple random sampling from a total of 935 fisherfolks in two selected Local Government Areas. Instrument for data collection was structured questionnaire. Data were analysed using descriptive and non parametric statistic. The result showed that majority (44%) of the respondents is between the ages of 41 and 60 years. There were no significant relationships between marital status, educational level, family size, income of fisherfolks and changing livelihood strategies (r= - 0.118, P = 0.05; r = -0.102, P = 0.05; r= -0.107, p 0.05; r = -0.107, P = 0.05) respectively. Correlation co-efficient analysis revealed that there was insignificant relationship between reasons for diversification of livelihood and changing livelihood strategies of the artisanal fisherfolks (r = 0.103, P = 0.184). In conclusion, the factors affecting livelihood strategies of artisanal fisherfolks include coping with insufficiency, income, obnoxious fishing method, government policy, resource depletion through sand bank, respondents ethnicity, age and sex. It is therefore recommended that greater emphasis should be directed towards provision of credit facilities. Fishing nets should also be subsidised by the government.

    Description: The study was carried out to identify the roles of Egun Women in Fisheries in Oto-Awori of Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State, as well as factors affecting their roles. Data were collected using the purposive sampling to select 20 Egun Women involved in Fisheries in each of Araromi, Idumosan, lIepete, Idomila and Ebute areas in Oto-Awori, using questionnaire method. Data were analysed using the percentages and Chi-square tests. The results revealed that 80% of the Egun Women were engaged in Fish Smoking, Fish Icing (65%), and Fish Marketting (85%). Factors limiting effective participation of the Egun Women in Fisheries were discussed with a number of recommended strategies which can make Egun Women contribute to increasing fish supplies in the area.

    Description: The results of the investigation of characteristics of designed gill nets of various mesh sizes used in Kainji Lake are presented. Six different mesh sizes were used in the construction of the gill nets. 1O.8mm mesh size had a mean catch of 389.3kg, (66.69%) followed by 88.9mm mesh size with a mean catch of 144.1 kg (29.23 % of the total catch.) 101.6mm mesh size had a mean catch of 11.47kg (2.41%) while 152.4mm mesh size had a mean catch of 07.73kg (1.62% of the total catch). The lowest catches were recorded in gill nets of mesh sizes 177.8mm which had a mean catch of 0.2kg and 190.5mm which had a mean catch of 0.06kg and percentages of 0.04% and 0.01% respectively. It was observed that gillnets with 88.9mm mesh size had the highest mean weight of 19.64kg, followed by gill nets with 50.8mm mesh size which had a mean weight of 27.44kg. Gillnets with 152.4mm mesh size caught fishes with a mean weight of 12.31kg while 101.6mm mesh size had a mean weight of fish of 3.26kg. Gillnets with 177.8mm mesh size caught fishes with a mean weight of 0.68kg while gill nets with 190.5mm mesh size caught fish with the group mean weight of 0.61kg. Although the gill net with 50.8mm mesh size had the highest mean catch, the gill net with 88.9mm mesh size had the preferable mean weight combined with the mean catch, which had significant difference (P 〈 0.05) in its favour when compared with the other (five) designed gill nets. Tilapia was the most abundant fish species throughout the period of sampling. Recommendations for the conservation of the fisheries resources of the lake were also proffered.

    Description: An experiment was conducted to determine the efficacy of pepper and garlic spice mixture at 0%, 2%, 3%, 4% and 5% levels (per gram of fish) in retarding lipid oxidation and on the organoleptic quality of hot-smoked catfish (Clarias gariepinus) in Kainji Area. The fish samples were frozen, cut, eviscerated, cleaned and dipped in 14.5% brine for 10 minutes. They were treated with the spices, smoked at 80-86~'C for 6 hours, cooled, stored at room temperature (25~'C-31~'C) for 21 days and used for physical, chemical, microbial and sensory evaluation studies. Untreated samples served as control. From the results of analysis, samples treated with the mixture of pepper and garlic paste (1:1 ratio) were microbially more stable than the control samples as these had longer shelf-life and were not visibly covered by moulds during a 21-day storage period. The preservative activity of brine and the anti-oxidant activity of pepper and garlic mixture were evident from lower Thiobarbituric acid (TBA) and peroxide values of treated samples relative to untreated samples. Results of sensory evaluation showed a general preference for spice-treated samples.

    Description: A study was conducted to determine the concentrations of nine heavy Metals (Cadmium, lead.Copper, Chromium, Iron, Zinc, Selenium, Nickel and Aluminum) in gills, muscles and skin of Clarias gariepinus within three different locations (Kuatansule, Wadata and UAM fish) with the use of standard flame Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry Techniques. Iron was found in high concentration in all the sites with the gills having the highest concentration while lead. Cadmium, Selenium, Nickel and Aluminum were not detectable. Significant differences in metal concentrations were observed between locations with UAM fish farm having the highest metal concentration. It is concluded that concentration, of heavy metals found in selected organs of Clarias gariepinus were within tolerable limits as recommended by FAO.

    Description: The knowledge of sources and routes of fish contamination is a very important aspect in maintaining the quality of safety of fish. This is paramount because the sources constitute the acess through which most unwanted microorganisms may be transmitted onto fish and fishery products. Unwanted microorganisms may be found in the final product through raw material, personal handling or mobile equipment such as forklifts, through leakage and openings in building, or through pests. Some pathogens may even become established in the processing equipment and rough contact surfaces such as fish retail tables and from niches where they can survive for long periods of time. Many of these microorganisms occur naturally in aquatic and general environments, and may be transmitted onto fish before capture, during and after processing. Also, contamination via air can occur through dust particles or via aerosols. Water is also a vehicle for transmission of many agents of diseases. Thus, the quality of the raw material, personnel hygiene, equipment used for processing, the quality of the water used and pests are key issues in this context. As for quality assurance, methods such as the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Good Hygiene Practice (GHP) and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) are recommended by the Codex Alimentarius Commission for use by any food processing establishment to ensure safe, wholesome and nutritious food for human consumption

    Description: The food and feeding adaptations of Protopterus annectens (Owen) in River Rima, Sokoto, Nigeria, were studied. Fish samples were collected from August to October, 2007. The Stomach contents were analyzed using frequency of occurrence method. The fish is an omnivore, feeding mainly on other fish, crustaceans, molluscus, leaf parts, seeds, pytoplankpton and detritus. The junviles showed more indigestion towards leaf parts and detritus while the adults exhibited more diverse and complex feeding. The fish gut length was 1.1 times the body length.

    Description: Social cultural surveys were carried out on the basis of questionnaire administered to the fishing families in three (3) villages that were purposely chosen due to the preponderance of the macrophyte on their water bodies. The questionnaire was designed to collect information on the cultural and ethno-botanical uses of (Nymphae lotus Linn) among the fishing communities of Kainji Lake Basin. Total of 120 respondents were randomly selected and interviewed. Study on the utilization of the macrophyte among the fishing communities confirmed that the people in the Kainji Lake Basin do consume the seeds directly as food (100%) while the leaf and petiole are used for medicinal purposes (85%). Also, the fishing communities prepare some concoction with the plant to enhance fish harvest in the river. The respondents identified eight fish species that spawn around the macrophyte, the most prevalent being Tilipia spp (17%) and the least being Prostopterus ssp 8%. The fishermen interacted with during the period of this survey do not support the total eradication of (Nymphae lotus Linn) on the water bodies, but agreed to selective control to check execessive water loss through tranpiration and to ease water travels.

    Description: Ninety five (95) specimena of P. Annectens (Owen) were caught from Goronyo Dam (26) and River Rima (69). The result revealed flesh yield of 44.29~c2.52 in August to 49.46~c to 5.68 in October which was not significant in samples from River Rima. The flesh yield from samples in Goronyo Dam ranged from 46-95~c2.43 in June to 54.28~c3.36 in September indicating significant difference between the months. The waste yield also varied significantly in samples from Goronyo Dam 45.72~c3.36 in September to 53.05~c 2.43 in June. However the results indicated non-significance (P〉0.05) difference in samples from River Rima with a range of 50.54~c6.68 in October to 55.71~c2.55 in August. Similarly the flesh yields were found to be higher during the dry season than in the rainy season. The sample specimens were found to contain enough flesh thereby creating potentialities to caning industries.

    Description: Salted and saltless Clarias gariepinus were smoked and oven dried. Their proximate composition and sensory qualities were assessed using standard methods. The salted oven dried fish has mean values of 65.00% (crude protein); 21.90% (fat); 6.40% (moisture); and 0.79% crude fibre while the saltless had lower mean values of 64.50% (protein); 20.95% (fat);5.68% (moisture) and0.40% crude fibre. The ash content of the saltless oven dried fish 7.34% was higher than the salted 6.46%. The salted smoke dried fish has 64.07% crude protein; 20.74% (fat), 6.51 % moisture; 8.54% ash and 0.53% crude fibre. Thus, the oven dried samples have higher protein and fat values than the smoke dried samples. The salted samples have higher values of these nutrients than the saltless ones. Salting perhaps increases the availability of nutrients in smoked and oven dried Clarias gariepinus. Sensorily, there was no significant difference (P〉O.05) in taste, texture and overall acceptability of salted and unsalted smoked and oven dried Clarias gariepinus. A significant difference existed in their colour and Flavour. The colour of the saltless smoked dried fish was most acceptable. While the flavour of the 5% salted smoked dried fish was preferred. The salted oven dried fish had the highest overall acceptability score

    Description: The paper enumerated the mandate of the Nigerian Agricultural Cooperative and Rural Development Bank (NACRDB) which was set up by the Federal Government of Nigeria in October 2000 specifically to provide credit facilities to the less privileged. It also accepts savings, deposits and provides opportunities for self employment in the rural areas. The bank has brought this function to bear in the fishing industry by granting microcredit financing services to both artisanal fishermen, small and medium scale fish farmers. Conditions for granting loan by the bank have been well spelt out in the paper. Also discussed are problems in financing the fish industry. Some of the problems are inadequate information, lack/inadequacy of collateral, resources information, dearth of skilled manpower. In conclusion, suggestions have been offered for the way forward

    Description: The proximate composition and mineral content of the African snake head, .Channa obscura from the Niger Delta, Nigeria was investigated with a view to provide nutritional data for dietary planning and baseline data for further research. Mean values for proximate composition were: protein 21.02%, fat 4.38%, moisture 67.82%, ash, 2.28%. The P, K, Na, Ca, Mg, Zn, and Fe contents of the fish samples was 3113.29mg/g, 237.35mg/100g, 332.12mg/100g, 383.25mg/100g, 455.33mg/l00g 0. 76mg/100g and 5.06mg/l00g respectively. Channa obscura thus constitutes a source of high protein, low in fat and source of P, Fe, K and Mg.
