    Description: The perfect knowledge about the scanned object’s geometry is essential for the empirical analysis of the stochastic properties of terrestrial laser scanners (TLSs). The Bonn reference wall is intended to be used as a reference for TLS quality investigations. Therefore, it is necessary to know the geometry of the wall at each time of scanning to avoid the misinterpretation of possible movements as systematic effects in the scanner. For this reason, we investigate the stability of the Bonn reference wall in this study. This includes the definition of a geodetic datum, the quantification of displacements, and the establishment of a suited deformation model. Since we discover a movement of about 1 mm within one day and up to 7 mm over the year, it is necessary to establish a cause-response deformation model to correct the wall movements in the scans. This study proposes two dynamic deformation models to compensate for the movements of the wall within one day and within a year. Our results show that it is better to measure the initial geometry of the wall each day since 89 % of the relative movements can be reduced to a maximum of 0.25 mm with a standard deviation of 0.16 mm (0.23 mm without modeling). If the shape is not initially known each day, the standard deviation of the displacements can be reduced from 1.10 mm to 0.61 mm, but the largest residuals still amount up to 2.5 mm, which is not sufficient for stochastic TLS investigations.

    Description: The changes of runoff in the middle reaches of the Yellow River basin of China have received considerable attention owing to their sharply decline during recent decades. In this paper, the impacts of rainfall characteristics and land use and cover change on water yields in the Jingle sub-basin of the middle reaches of the Yellow River basin were investigated using a combination of statistical analysis and hydrological simulations. The Levenberg Marquardt and Analysis of Variance methods were used to construct multivariate, nonlinear, model equations between runoff coefficient and rainfall intensity and vegetation coverage. The land use changes from 1971 to 2017 were ascertained using transition matrix analysis. The impact of land use on water yields was estimated using the M-EIES hydrological model. The results show that the runoff during flood season (July to September) decreased significantly after 2000, whereas slightly decreasing trend was detected for precipitation. Furthermore, there were increase in short, intense, rainfall events after 2000 and this rainfall events were more conducive to flood generation. The “Grain for Green” project was carried out in 1999, and the land use in the middle reaches of the Yellow River improved significantly, which make the vegetation coverage (Vc) of the Jingle sub-basin increased by 13%. When Vc approaches 48%, the runoff coefficient decreased to the lowest, and the vegetation conditions have the greatest effect on reducing runoff. Both land use and climate can change the water yield in the basin, but for areas where land use has significantly improved, the impact of land use change on water yield plays a dominant role. The results acquired in this study provide a useful reference for water resources planning and soil and water conservation in the erodible areas of the middle reaches of the Yellow River basin.

    Description: Recently water resources reanalysis (WRR) global streamflow products are emerging from high- resolution global models as a means to provide long and consistent global streamflow products for assessment of global challenge such as climate change. Like any other products, the newly developed global streamflow products have limitations accurately represent the dynamics of local streamflow hydrographs. There is a need to locally evaluate and apply correction factors for better representation and make use of the data. This research focuses on the evaluation and correction of the bias embedded in the global streamflow product (WRR, 0.25°) developed by WaterGAP3 hydrological model in the upper Blue Nile basin part of Ethiopia. Three spatiotemporal dynamical bias correction schemes (temporal-spatial variable, temporal-spatial constant and spatial variable) tested in twelve watersheds of the basin. The temporal-spatial variable dynamical bias correction scheme significantly improves the streamflow estimation. The Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient (NSCE) improves by 30% and bias decreases by 19% for the twelve streamflow gauging stations applying leave one out cross-validation approach in turn. Therefore, the temporal-spatial variable scheme is applicable and can use as one method for the bias correction to use the global data for local applications in the upper Blue Nile basin.

    Description: Study presented in this paper is focused on comparison and statistical assessment of differences between the selected Level 2 products of the satellite mission Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE). Global monthly gravity field models in terms of spherical harmonic coefficients produced by three institutes of GRACE Science Data System are compared with the partially independent MASCON global gravity field model. Detailed comparison and statistical analysis of differences is performed in 5 selected river basins: Amazon, Congo, Danube, Yenisei and Lena. For each spherical harmonic solution, 8 different filtrations available at International Center for Global Gravity Field Models (ICGEM) are tested over the time span from April 2002 to July 2016. Fischer test at two significance levels 10% and 5% has been performed in order to qualify the statistical significance between the particular solutions.

    Description: Simultaneous use of data repeated levelling measurements and continuous GNSS observations allows increasing the spatial resolution of geodynamics models. For this purpose, it is necessary to create a single network, a so-called hybrid network. This paper aims at examining the possibility of using scale-free network theory to determine the most relevant common points in hybrid networks using the distance criterion. Used on European network points: UELN (United European Levelling Network) and EPN (European Permanent GPS Network) and the regional network. In the hybrid network (UELN + EPN), 18 pseudo-nodal points with the highest number of links were identified. The accepted distance criterion shows that about 90 % of the EPN points can be used as common points. The application of the scale-free network theory allows determining the significance of points in a hybrid network.

    Description: Variable rate technology (VRT) in nutrient management has been developed in order to apply crop inputs according to the required amount of fertilizers. Meteorological conditions rarely differ within one field; however, differences in soil conditions responding to precipitation or evaporation results within field variations. These variations in soil properties such as moisture content, evapotranspiration ability, etc. requires site-specific treatments for the produced crops. There is an ongoing debate among experts on how to define management zones as well as how to define the required amount of fertilizers for phosphorus and nitrogen replenishment for winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production. For management zone delineation, vegetation based or soil based data collection is applied, where various sensor technology or remote sensing is in help for the farmers. The objective of the study reported in this paper was to investigate the effect of soil moisture data derived from Sentinel-2 satellite images moisture index and variable rate phosphorus and nitrogen fertilizer by means of variable rate application (VRA) in winter wheat in Mezőföld, Hungary. Satellite based moisture index variance at the time of sowing has been derived, calculated and later used for data comparison. Data for selected points showed strong correlation (R2 = 0.8056; n = 6) between moisture index and yield, however generally for the whole field correlation does not appear. Vegetation monitoring has been carried out by means of NDVI data calculation. On the field level, as indicated earlier neither moisture index values at sowing nor vegetation index data was sufficient to determine yield. Winter wheat production based on VRA treatment resulted significant increase in harvested crop: 5.07 t/h in 2013 compared to 8.9 t/ha in 2018. Uniformly managed (control) areas provided similar yield as VRA treated areas (8.82 and 8.9 t/ha, respectively); however, the input fertilizer was reduced by 108 kg/ha N and increased by 37 kg/ha P.

    Description: The knowledge of spatio-temporal dynamics of soil moisture within the catchment is very important for rainfall–runoff modelling in flood forecasting. In this study the comparison between remotely sensed soil moisture and soil moisture estimated from the SHETRAN hydrological model was performed for small and flashy Jičinka River catchment (75.9 km2) in the Czech Republic. Due to a relatively coarse spatial resolution of satellite data, the satellite soil moisture data were downscaled, by applying the method developed by Qu et al. (2015). The sub-grid variability of soil moisture was estimated on the basis of the mean soil moisture for the grid cell and the known hydraulic soil properties. The SHETRAN model was calibrated and verified to the observed streamflow hydrographs at the catchment outlet. The good correlation between the two different soil moisture information was obtained according to the majority of applied criteria. The results of the evaluation criteria indicate that the downscaled remotely sensed soil moisture data can be used as additional criteria for the calibration and validation of hydrological models for small catchments and can contribute to a better estimation of parameters, to reduce uncertainties of hydrological models and improve runoff simulations.

    Description: It was shown that the use of biochar provides many benefits to agriculture by improving the whole complex of soil properties, including soil structure. However, the diverse range of biochar effects depends on its physicochemical properties, its application rates, soil initial properties etc. The impacts of biochar, mainly its reapplication to soils and its interaction with nitrogen in relation to water-stable aggregates (WSA) did not receive much attention to date. The aims of the study were: (1) to evaluate the effect of initial application (in spring 2014) and reapplication (in spring 2018) of different biochar rates (B0, B10 and B20 t ha−1) as well as application of biochar with N-fertilizer (40 to 240 kg N ha−1 depending on the requirement of the cultivated crop) on the content of WSA as one of the most important indicators of soil structure quality, (2) to assess the interrelationships between the contents of soil organic matter (SOM) and WSA. The study was conducted in 2017–2019 as part of the field experiment with biochar on Haplic Luvisol at the experimental station of SUA in Nitra, Slovakia. Results showed that initial application as well as reapplication of biochar improved soil structure. The most favorable changes in soil structure were found in N0B20B treatment (with biochar reapplication) at which a significantly higher content of water-stable macro-aggregates (WSAma) (+15%) as well as content of WSAma size fractions of 〉 5 mm, 5–3 mm, 3–2 mm and 2–1 mm (+72%, +65%, +57% and +64%, respectively) was observed compared to the control. An increase in SOM content, due to both, initial biochar application and its reapplication, significantly supported the stability of soil aggregates, while organic matter including humic substances composition did not.

    Description: BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) is composed of satellites in geostationary Earth orbit (GEO), medium Earth orbit (MEO) and inclined geosynchronous orbit (IGSO). However, the orbit determination of geostationary Earth orbits and of geosynchronous orbits (GSO) with small inclination angle and small eccentricity is a challenging task that is addressed in this paper using Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). The satellite positions were predicted in Earth-centred inertial (ECI) reference frame when propagated through Keplerian model and perturbation force model for different values of right ascension of ascending node (RAAN). Root mean square (RMS) errors of 9.61 cm, 6.73 cm and 11.46 cm were observed in ECI X, Y and Z satellite position coordinates of GSO respectively, whereas, the RMS errors for GEO satellite were 8.89 cm, 7.92 cm, and 0.93 cm respectively in ECI X, Y and Z coordinates; for perturbation force model with maximum value of RAAN when compared with dynamic orbit determination model. Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for EKF reported a p-value 〉 0.05, indicating a good fit of perturbation force model for orbit propagation. Orbit determination using EKF with perturbation force model were compared with that using EKF with Kepler's model. Wilcoxon Rank Sum test was used to compare the residuals from EKF algorithm through Kepler's model and perturbation force model. EKF with Perturbation force model showed improvement in predicting the satellite positions as compared to Kepler's model. EKF with Perturbation force model was further applied to International GNSS Service (IGS) station data and kilometre level accuracy was achieved. RMS errors of 0.75 km, 2.53 km and 1.91 km were observed in ECI X, Y and Z satellite position coordinates of GSO, respectively, whereas, the RMS errors for GEO satellite were 3.89 km, 4.20 km and 6.66 km respectively in ECI X, Y and Z coordinates for perturbation force model.

    Description: Santorini is located in the central part of the Hellenic Volcanic Arc (South Aegean Sea) and is well known for the Late-Bronze-Age “Minoan” eruption that may have been responsible for the decline of the great Minoan civilization on the island of Crete. To use gravity to probe the internal structure of the volcano and to determine whether there are temporal variations in gravity due to near surface changes, we construct two gravity maps. Dionysos Satellite Observatory (DSO) of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) carried out terrestrial gravity measurements in December 2012 and in September 2014 at selected locations on Thera, Nea Kameni, Palea Kameni, Therasia, Aspronisi and Christiana islands. Absolute gravity values were calculated using raw gravity data at every station for all datasets. The results were compared with gravity measurements performed in July 1976 by DSO/NTUA and absolute gravity values derived from the Hellenic Military Geographical Service (HMGS) and other sources. Marine gravity data that were collected during the PROTEUS project in November and December 2015 fill between the land gravity datasets. An appropriate Digital Elevation Model (DEM) with topographic and bathymetric data was also produced. Finally, based on the two combined datasets (one for 2012–2014 and one for the 1970s), Free air and complete Bouguer gravity anomaly maps were produced following the appropriate data corrections and reductions. The pattern of complete Bouguer gravity anomaly maps was consistent with seismological results within the caldera. Finally from the comparison of the measurements made at the same place, we found that, within the caldera, the inner process of the volcano is ongoing both before, and after, the unrest period of 2011–2012.

    Description: To survey the pipe’s axis used in the installation of the cable-stayed bridge, a reflectorless total station and a proposed surveying observation technique were used. The approach includes a new method for observation and a graphical solution for the pipe’s axis determination. The technique shown in this paper can be applied for vertical and semi-vertical cylindrical pipes. A field test with real data and results is also presented.

    Description: Interpretation and inversion of microgravity anomalies belong to important tasks of near-surface geophysics, mostly in cavities detection in engineering, environmental and archaeological applications. One of the mostly used concepts of inversion in applied gravimetry is based on the approximation of the model space by means of 2D or 3D elementary sources with the aim to estimate their densities by means of the solution of a corresponding linear equation system. There were published several approaches trying to obtain correct and realistic results, which describe real parameters of the sources. In the proposed contribution we analyse the properties of two additional functionals, which describe additional properties of the searched solution – namely so-called L2-smoothing and minimum support focusing stabilizers. For the inversion itself, we have used the regularized conjugate gradient method. We have studied properties of these two stabilizers in the case of one synthetic model and one real-world dataset (microgravity data from St. Nicholas church in Trnava). Results have shown that proposed algorithm with the minimum support stabilizer can generate satisfactory model results, from which we can describe real geometry, dimensions and physical properties of interpreted cavities.

    Description: 3D post-stack time migrated seismic data and a suite of composite well log data from six wells drilled within the “AFUN” field Niger delta were used to effect a detailed interpretation of the field. This was with a view to delineating architectural elements that control reservoir quality of a deepwater turbidite reservoir. The data analyses were done using the Petrel software. LAS file of logs were imported into the Petrel software as well as SEG.Y. seismic data. Fault interpretation and horizon mapping were based on the well-seismic tie from the generated seismogram. Time and depth structure maps were created. Thirty faults which include growth faults, reverse faults, collapsed crest structure and as well as faults that are synthetic and antithetic to the growth faults were mapped. The growth faults are believed to act as pathways for the updip movement of hydrocarbon from the Akata Formation to Agbada Formation. The structural interpretation showed that the area has been subjected to compressional deformation which resulted in reverse faulting system in toe thrust zone influenced by shale diapirs. The maps revealed contour closures that belong to an anticlinal structure which is forming traps in the reservoirs. The structures are faulted North-South trending rollover anticlines. It has also been shown that the distribution and type of architectural elements i.e. fractures within the fan system have major impact upon the reservoir distribution, continuity and connectivity of sand/shale bodies. The study concluded that structural style and facies architecture are the two fundamental elements that defined the reservoir heterogeneity of the “AFUN” Field.

    Description: Long term GNSS observations provided by networks of the continuously operating reference stations (CORS) allow for determination of the global and local tectonic plate movements and seasonal variations. In recent years, PPP (Precise Point Positioning) technique has become increasingly popular and most likely in the future will replace relative positioning with CORS stations. In this paper, we discuss the difference of the velocity and seasonal component estimates of 25 Latvian CORS stations on the basis of daily PPP solutions from the Nevada Geodetic Laboratory and double-difference solutions from the Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformatics of the University of Latvia. Time series of each coordinate component for 9-year time period were determined by the usage of the Tsview software and seasonal existence of linear, annual, semi-annual factors and their uncertainties were determined. Breaks (e. g., antenna and receiver changes) were also taken into account. We then assessed the noise characteristics of these time series with the use of overlapping Hadamard variance (OHVAR). The result shows that OHVAR is computationally cheap, and the dominating power-law noise, including flicker and random walk. However Hadamard deviation of the PPP and double-difference solutions scatters differently for a whole year averaging time due to the different GNSS data strategies.

    Description: Despite the increasing interest in kinematic data acquisition, Robotic Total Stations (RTSs) are still relatively seldom used. No matter if Mobile Mapping Systems or Control & Guidance, GNSS is mostly used as position sensor, which limits the application to outdoor areas. For indoor applications, a combination of relative sensors is usually employed. One reason why RTSs are not used is the challenging time referencing and synchronization. In this work we analyze the challenges of a synchronized kinematic application of RTSs and present solutions.Our approach is based on a wireless network synchronization to establish a precise temporal reference frame. The achievable synchronization quality is thoroughly examined. In addition we develop a kinematic model of spherical measurements, that incorporates timing related parameters. To estimate these parameters we propose a temporal calibration utilizing an industrial robot. Both parts of our approach are evaluated using a test setup of two total stations, proofing an overall synchronization accuracy of 0.2 ms. An overall horizontal kinematic point accuracy of 2.3 mm reveals the potential of sufficiently synchronized RTSs.

    Description: Predictive maintenance and safety assessment during the construction and operational phase are becoming more and more important in modern tunnelling. However, traditional measurement methods are often time-consuming, expensive and partially require an interruption of the tunnel traffic. In this article, we present a tunnel monitoring approach based on distributed fibre optic sensing (DFOS), which delivers hundreds of strain and temperature sensing points inside the structure and gives completely new information about the behaviour of the tunnel lining. Measurements can be performed automatically without the need of access to the tunnel and hence, monitoring can be made without disturbing the tunnel construction or operation. The developed system was installed within the shotcrete tunnel lining of a railway tunnel under construction in Austria. In addition to the critical installation process, this article discusses the main monitoring results and compares them to conventional measurements.

    Description: Satellite signal strength sometimes decreases when multipath exists. This effect reduces signal quality and can lead to a large static positioning error, even the survey-grade receivers are used. Three signal selection methods based on signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) measurements were proposed. The first was the conventional method, based on elevation-dependent average SNR, the second used a moving average of SNR fluctuation and the third method used NLOS exclusion based on SNR residual clustering by the K-means algorithm. To evaluate the positioning accuracy improvement, the static 1 Hz single-point positioning (SPP) test was performed in real-time in two different multipath environments using both dual and quad- constellation GNSS receivers. Trimble and CHC receivers were used at each point to examine the effect on each measurement. Results indicated that the three proposed methods mainly reduced multipath error in horizontal direction compared with the normal SPP.

    Description: Discussing the problem of the external gravitational potential of the rotating Earth, we have to consider the fundamental postulate of the finite speed of the propagation of gravitation. This can be done using the expressions for the gravitational aberration compared to the Liénard–Wiechert solution of the retarded potentials. The term gravitational counter-aberration or co-aberration is introduced to describe the pattern of the propagation of the gravitational signal emitted by the rotating Earth. It is proved that in the first approximation, the classic theory of the aberration of light can be applied to calculate this effect. Some effects of the gravitational aberration on the external gravity field of the rotating Earth may influence the orbit determination of the Earth artificial satellites.

    Description: The CG6 is an automated gravity meter that has a worldwide measurement range of over 8000 mGals and a reading resolution of 0.0001 mGal. Some factors that may influence the gravity readings are corrected by the instrument’s software. In this paper, the effects of the ambient temperature and humidity changes on the CG-6’s gravity measurements were investigated with the aim of reducing the uncertainty which remains in gravity measurements in microgal level, and giving recommendations for more accurate results. A controlled heating experiment was used to determine the impact of ambient temperature on gravity and 12 hours of continuous gravity observations were used to identify the impact of humidity on gravity measurements. It was observed that the sensor temperature and the gravity reading were highly correlated with the ambient temperature. The linear correlation with R2 〉 0.94 and R2 〉 0.90 were found for the corrected gravity reading and the residual sensor temperature variations respectively with the ambient temperature when heating. It was demonstrated that the calculated ambient temperature correction, −0.0011 mGal/oC, is more stable than the correction given by the instrument in terms of standard deviation though the impact of humidity on gravity reading was not clear.

    Description: Analyses based on precipitation data may be limited by the quality of the data, the size of the available historical series and the efficiency of the adopted methodologies; these factors are especially limiting when conducting analyses at the daily scale. Thus, methodologies are sought to overcome these barriers. The objective of this work is to develop a hybrid model through the maximum overlap discrete wavelet transform (MODWT) to estimate daily rainfall in homogeneous regions of the Tocantins-Araguaia Hydrographic Region (TAHR) in the Amazon (Brazil). Data series from the Climate Prediction Center morphing (CMORPH) satellite products and rainfall data from the National Water Agency (ANA) were divided into seasonal periods (dry and rainy), which were adopted to train the model and for model forecasting. The results show that the hybrid model had a good performance when forecasting daily rainfall using both databases, indicated by the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficients (0.81–0.95), thus, the hybrid model is considered to be potentially useful for modelling daily rainfall.

    Description: In this study, the value of proxy data was explored for calibrating a conceptual hydrologic model for small ungauged basins, i.e. ungauged in terms of runoff. The study site was a 66 ha Austrian experimental catchment dominated by agricultural land use, the Hydrological Open Air Laboratory (HOAL). The three modules of a conceptual, lumped hydrologic model (snow, soil moisture accounting and runoff generation) were calibrated step-by-step using only proxy data, and no runoff observations. Using this stepwise approach, the relative runoff volume errors in the calibration and first and second validation periods were –0.04, 0.19 and 0.17, and the monthly Pearson correlation coefficients were 0.88, 0.71 and 0.64, respectively. By using proxy data, the simulation of state variables improved compared to model calibration in one step using only runoff data. Using snow and soil moisture information for model calibration, the runoff model performance was comparable to the scenario when the model was calibrated using only runoff data. While the runoff simulation performance using only proxy data did not considerably improve compared to a scenario when the model was calibrated on runoff data, the more accurately simulated state variables imply that the process consistency improved.

    Description: Large debris transported by flood affects scour features at bridge piers and increases the risks of structural failure. Geometric characteristics of the debris and the relative position of the pier with respect to the river bank are important parameters for the scour process. The interaction between the water flow and debris accumulation increases the shear stress, turbulence and consequently enhances the scour depth at the pier. This paper aims at analyzing such effects on scour evolution at bridge piers. To this end, two series of tests were carried out under clear water condition with different debris geometries and percentage blockage ratios. Experimental evidences showed that the pier position only influences scour evolution and equilibrium morphology for low water depths. Conversely, its effect becomes negligible for scour at bridge piers with debris accumulation and higher water depths. Useful practical relationships have been derived, with satisfactory prediction capability of the scour evolution for all the tested configurations.

    Description: The study aimed to determine the linkage between soil exchangeable potassium (K+) concentration and stream water K+ concentration during rainfall and snowmelt events in small catchments with different land use (Carpathian Foothills, Poland). The complementary geochemical and hydrochemical approach used in the study produced new information on the role of particular soil horizons and contributing areas such as hillslope or riparian areas in K+ delivery to stream channels during events. Horizons lying above the nearly impermeable fragipan (Btx) play the most important role in the process of K+ influx to streams during most event types except snowmelts with frozen soils, in all the studied catchments. In the woodland catchment, rapid flushing of K+ from the topsoil Ah horizon with higher hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) and higher exchangeable K+ concentrations than in the lying lower E horizon resulted in a clockwise hysteresis of K+ in stream water during most events. In agricultural catchments, changes in stream water K+ concentration during events were determined by distinct differences between soil exchangeable K+ concentrations on hillslopes and in riparian areas.

    Description: An open channel flume with a central 180-degree bend with a rigid bed is designed to obtain a better understanding of the complex flow pattern around a T-shaped spur dike located in a sharp bend. The 3-dimensional velocities are measured by using an acoustic Doppler velocimetry under clear-water conditions. This study’s primary objective is to compare variations of the mean flow pattern along a 180-degree bend with a variety of T-shaped spur dike lengths. In order to do so, parameters such as streamlines, the maximum velocity distribution, and the secondary flow strength under the influence of three T-shaped spur dike lengths will be analyzed and then compared with the case where no spur dikes are implemented. The results show that with the spur dike placed at the bend apex, the mean secondary flow strength at that range increases by approximately 2.5 times. In addition, a 67% increase in the length of the wing and web of the spur dike leads to a 27% growth in the mean secondary flow strength along the bend.

    Description: As crustal structure models based on seismic and other data are frequently used as a-priori information for further geophysical and geological studies and interpretations (e. g., for gravity inversion), it is important to accurately document their qualities. For instance, the uncertainties in published crustal structures deeply affect the accuracies of produced Moho contour maps. The qualities in seismic crustal models arise from several factors such as the survey method, the spatial resolution of the survey (for example the spacing of the shot points and the recording stations), and the analytical techniques utilized to process the data. It is difficult to determine the uncertainties associated with seismic based crustal depth/Moho depth (MD) models, and even more difficult to use such data for estimating the Moho density contrast (MDC) and its accuracy. However, there is another important observable available today, namely global satellite gravitational data, which are fairly homogeneous v. r. t. accuracy and distribution over the planet. For instance, we find by simple error propagation, using the error covariance matrix of the GOCE TIM5 gravitational model, that this model can determine the MD to a global RMS error of 0.8 km with a resolution of about 1° for a known MDC of 200  kg / m 3 ext{kg}/{ext{m}^{3}} . However, the uncertainty in the MDC will further deteriorate the result. We present a new method for estimating the MD and MDC uncertainties of one model by comparing it with another (correlated or uncorrelated) model with known uncertainty. The method is applied in estimating the uncertainty for the CRUST1.0 MD model from four global models (CRUST19, MDN07, GEMMA1.0, KTH15C), yielding mean standard errors varying between 2 and 4.9 km in ocean regions and between 3.2 and 6.0 km on land regions with overall means of 3.8±0.4 and 4.8 ± 0.6 km 4.8pm 0.6hspace{0.1667em}ext{km} , respectively. Also, starting from the KTH15C MDC model, the mean standard error of CRUST1.0 MDC was estimated to 47.4 and 48.3  kg / m 3 ext{kg}/{ext{m}^{3}} for ocean and land regions, respectively.

    Description: The goal of classical geodetic data analysis is often to estimate distributional parameters like expected values and variances based on measurements that are subject to uncertainty due to unpredictable environmental effects and instrument specific noise. Its traditional roots and focus on analytical solutions at times require strong prior assumptions regarding problem specification and underlying probability distributions that preclude successful application in practical cases for which the goal is not regression in presence of Gaussian noise. Machine learning methods are more flexible with respect to assumed regularity of the input and the form of the desired outputs and allow for nonparametric stochastic models at the cost of substituting easily analyzable closed form solutions by numerical schemes. This article aims at examining common grounds of geodetic data analysis and machine learning and showcases applications of algorithms for supervised and unsupervised learning to tasks concerned with optimal estimation, signal separation, danger assessment and design of measurement strategies that occur frequently and naturally in geodesy.

    Description: Radar Corner Reflectors (CR) are increasingly used as reference targets for land surface deformation measurements with the Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technique. When co-located with ground-based Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) infrastructure, InSAR observations at CR can be used to integrate relative measurements of surface deformation into absolute reference frames defined by GNSS. However, CR are also a potential source of GNSS multipath effects and may therefore have a detrimental effect on the GNSS observations. In this study, we compare daily GNSS coordinate time series and 30-second signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) observations for periods before and after CR deployment at a GNSS site. We find that neither the site coordinates nor the SNR values are significantly affected by the CR deployment, with average changes being within 0.1 mm for site coordinates and within 1 % for SNR values. Furthermore, we generate empirical site models by spatially stacking GNSS observation residuals to visualise and compare the spatial pattern in the surroundings of GNSS sites. The resulting stacking maps indicate oscillating patterns at elevation angles above 60 degrees which can be attributed to the CR deployed at the analysed sites. The effect depends on the GNSS antenna used at a site with the magnitude of multipath patterns being around three times smaller for a high-quality choke ring antenna compared to a ground plane antenna without choke rings. In general, the CR-induced multipath is small compared to multipath effects at other GNSS sites located in a different environment (e. g. mounted on a building).

    Description: This article contains the analysis of the correlation between the cone resistance qc from CPTU tests and shear modulus G0 determined from seismic tests SDMT and SCPTU. The analysis was performed for sands located in Poland, characterised by differential grain size distribution and origin. The significant impact of the independent variables; grain size, preconsolidation stress σ’p , geostatic vertical stress σ’v0 and relative density index on the dependencies analysed, were examined in three stages. Firstly, a general relationship between the cone resistance and shear modulus G0 was established; in the second stage, an analysis was carried out in selected groups of subsoil; and in the third stage, the influence of other independent variables was taken into account. In each stage, the functional form of the dependency was determined, and their statistical significance was assessed throughout coefficient of determination R2. For more variables, multivariable regression analysis was applied for assessment. Conducted analysis showed that the overall view of the relation between the cone resistance qc and shear modulus G0 has low evaluation of the statistical significance. This fact is consistent with the theoretical assessment of this relationship. To obtain a satisfactory assessment of this dependency, it is necessary to construct empirical equations for individual groups of soil, taking into account other independent variables; preconsolidation stress σ’p , vertical stress σ’vo and relative density index. This approach allows to assess the local correlation relationship, which is very useful during the geological project.

    Description: The paper concerns the characteristic parameters of the selected isotropic failure criteria, i.e. Mohr–Coulomb, Drucker–Prager, Matsuoka–Nakai and Lade–Duncan. The parameters are determined directly from the failure criteria and stress measurements or by semi-theoretical approach, assuming that the soil obeys the associated flow rule and using the plane strain condition. In the latter case, the parameters can be expressed as functions of the plane strain internal friction angle, which is determined from measurements. The principal stress tensor components, corresponding to the soil peak strength and necessary to obtain the failure criteria parameters, are measured in a series of true triaxial, plane strain tests, on coarse Skarpa sand samples of different initial relative density, subjected to various confining pressures.

    Description: The main objective of the empirical influence function (EIF) is to describe how estimates behave when an observation set is affected by gross errors. Unlike the influence function, which represents the estimation method’s general properties, EIF can provide valuable information about applying different methods to a particular network. The chosen example allows us to compare different robust methods. The paper focuses on non-standard applications of EIF, for example, in assuming steering parameter of robust methods (usually related to the assumed interval for acceptable observation errors). The paper shows that commonly used values do not always work well, and EIFs might help choose appropriate values, guaranteeing the estimation process’s robustness. The most important new application of EIFs concerns the detection and assessment of a single gross error. The blinded experiments proved that such an approach is correct and can be an alternative to classic statistical tests for outlier detection.

    Description: In this paper, a qualitative safety analysis of the Żelazny Most tailings pond is addressed. This object is one of the largest facilities of this type in the world being a crucial element in the technological line of copper production in KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. The assessment of the effectiveness of two types of preventive measures, i.e., relief wells and loading berms, is investigated based on displacement and stability analysis of two 2D cross-sections in a technical section of the dam. The study shows that the considered preventive measures generally have a positive impact on increasing the safety level of the structure during its further raise. In particular, their effectiveness is most evident when they are applied simultaneously. It is eventually suggested that the selection of final solutions to be applied on the facility should be based on the quantitative 3D analysis.

    Description: Tests that were carried out in order to obtain knowledge of the actual values of strength parameters obtained by CIPP liners that are used to repair pipelines. Specimens of liners made of high quality polyester felt cured with epoxy resin were subjected to tests. The scope of the performed studies corresponded with the scope of acceptance tests, which are carried out in the investment process during quality control of renovation works. Specimens of liners taken from sewers with 3 different diameters, i.e. 200mm, 350mm and 500mm were selected as representative for underground sewage networks. The obtained results enabled the calculations carried out in the course of design work to be verified, and differences between the model values of the strength parameters obtained from the calculations, and real values that are burdened with irregularities resulting from the conditions prevailing at a construction site and which were obtained for specimens taken from their built-in locations to be compared. The tests confirmed that it is possible to renovate - using CIPP liners - sewers with a lot of structural and material damage that negatively affects a liner‘s geometry. The implementation of the reinforcing internal coating in a sewer enables its further safe operation. The direct application value of the research involves the enlargement and clarification of knowledge concerning the actual load-bearing capacity of CIPP liners.

    Description: This study presents the behaviour of model footing resting over unreinforced and reinforced sand bed under different loading conditions carried out experimentally. The parameters investigated in this study includes the number of reinforced layers (N = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4), embedment ratio (Df /B = 0, 0.5, 1.0), eccentric and inclined ratio (e/L, e/B = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15) and (a = 0°, 7°, 14°). The test sand was reinforced with bi-axial geogrid (Bx20/20). The test results show that the ultimate bearing capacities decrease with axial eccentricity and inclination of applied loads. The test results also show that the depth of model footing increase zero to B (B = width of model footing), an increase of ultimate bearing capacity (UBC) approximated at 93%. Similarly, the multi-layered geogrid reinforced sand (N = 0 to 4) increases the UBC by about 75%. The bearing capacity ratio (BCR) of the model footing increases with an increasing load eccentricity to the core boundary of footing; if the load eccentricities increase continuity, the BCR decreases. The tilt of the model footing is increased by increasing the eccentricity and decreases with increasing the number of reinforcing layers.

    Description: The article presents parametric analysis regarding the impact of subgrade and backfill stiffness on values and distribution of bending moments in the structural elements of a small integral box bridge made of cast in situ reinforced concrete. The analyzed parameters are the modulus of subgrade reaction under and behind the bridge structure (kv kh). At the beginning, the author presents the integral box bridge and selected parts of the bridge design. In particular, the author focuses on the method of modeling of the subgrade stiffness parameters under and behind the bridge structure, as well as their impact on the values and distribution of bending moments in the bridge structural elements. The bridge was designed by the author and built on the M9 motorway between the towns of Waterford and Kilcullen in Ireland. In conclusions, the author shares his knowledge and experience relating to the design of small integral bridges and culverts and puts forward recommendations as to further research on these type of structures in Poland.

    Description: Stone columns (or granular piles, GPs) are progressively being utilized for ground improvement, mostly for pliant edifice such as road mounds, oil depot, and so forth. The present analysis is done by introducing strengthening at both the ends of GP, i.e., bottom and top end so that the bulging problem will be solved and the beneficiary effect of the bearing stratum can be utilized by the bottom strengthening feature. Analysis of a single partially strengthened, at both top and bottom, end-bearing GP is presented in this article in terms of displacement affecting component for the top (DACT) of GP, percentage load transferred to the base (PLTB) of strengthened GP, and normalized shear stress (NSS). The PLTB of the strengthened GP was found to increase considerably. The NSS was found to reduce at the top end of GP and is found to be redistributed along the length of GP.

    Description: The paper presents results of a numerical investigation on load capacity of the mixed bench and slab shallow foundations (often used in the process of the modernization of the old, antique buildings, which are suffering from lack of the load capacity). The main trouble with use of existing analytical approaches is a non-unique foundation level of the bench and slab, they could even be founded on different geotechnical layers. Proposed analytical model based on Brinch Hansen (EC-7) approach could deal with such a problem. Results of 2D and 3D numerical modelling (ultimate load of the foundation) are compared to the obtained by using the proposed approach. Influence of the soil above the foundation level is also investigated. Different width to length ratios of the foundation are analyzed (from “short” to “long” foundations). Usability of the proposed analytical model in engineering practice is proved by numerical simulations; the obtained results are on the safe side with quite acceptable margin of additional safety.

    Description: The article presents the alternative use of termite mound soils (TMSs) as full replacement for clay soils in brick production. TMSs from two localities, Jawaj and Sene, in Ethiopia were investigated for bricks production. The TMSs samples contained high SiO2 and Al2O3. The TMSs bricks were fired at different temperatures from 500 to 1,000°C. The obtained mean compressive strengths (σ), 18 and 14 MPa, were observed for bricks made from TMSs from Jawaj and Sene, respectively, at the optimum firing temperature of 700°C. The σ of TMSs bricks decreased as the firing temperature increased above 700°C, while for conventional clay soil brick, the σ increased with temperature beyond 700°C. The water absorptions and saturation coefficients of fired TMSs bricks decreased with increased firing temperature. The TMSs bricks meet the standard specification of dimension tolerance only along the height. All the TMSs bricks made from the two localities were not efflorescent. TMSs from Jawaj and Sene sites can be used as a raw material to replace the long-used clay soils for bricks production as a construction material for houses construction in rural and urban areas.

    Description: This paper presents experimental research on expanded clay aggregate concrete. The aim of the investigations was to determine if the pre-wetting of expanded clay aggregate has an effect on the freeze-thaw durability of the expanded clay aggregate concrete. Five concrete series based on the same concrete mix design were made and tested. The degree of pre-wetting of the aggregate was varied: dry aggregate was used in the first series, aggregate with a moisture content of 10% was used in series IA and IB and aggregate with a moisture content of 25% was used in series IIA and IIB. Also the approach to the production process was varied: in series A the water contained in the aggregate was taken into account in the global water-cement ratio (consequently a reduced amount of water was added to the mix), whereas in series B the nominal amount of water was added to the mix (as in the case of dry aggregate). The freeze-thaw resistance criterion was based on the assessment of the decrease of compressive strength and increase in weight loss after exposure to freeze-thaw cycles. The expanded clay aggregate concrete's strength and mass decrements caused by freeze-thaw cycling were used as the measure of its freeze-thaw resistance. The investigations have shown that the pre-wetting of expanded clay aggregate has an effect on the freeze-thaw durability of the expanded clay aggregate concrete. The differences of concrete compressive strength decrease related to freeze-thaw durability may be 2 to 5 times greater when inadequate method of calculating mixing water for concrete is used.

    Description: The city of Algiers (Algeria) is a highly seismic area, and therefore, soil liquefaction poses a major concern for structures resting on sandy soil. A campaign of 62 static penetration tests or cone penetrometer tests (CPT) was carried out on a site located in the commune of Dar El Beïda in Algiers. The soil Liquefaction Potential Index (LPI) values were assessed, for each borehole, based on the simplified procedure of Seed and Idriss. On the other hand, the geographic information system and geostatistical analysis were used to quantify the risk of soil liquefaction at the studied site. It is worth mentioning that the (LPI) was taken as a regionalized variable. In addition, the experimental variogram was modeled on the basis of a spherical model. Also, the interpolation of the LPI values in the unsampled locations was performed by the Kriging technique using both isotropic and anisotropic models. Kriging standard deviation maps were produced for both cases. The cross-validation showed that the anisotropic model exhibited a better fit for the interpolation of the values of the soil liquefaction potential. The results obtained indicated that a significant part of the soil is liable to liquefy, in particular in the northwestern region of the study area. The findings suggest that there is a proportional relationship between the risk of liquefaction and the increase or decrease in seismic acceleration.

    Description: The purpose of this paper was to present the thermoporoelasticity model adapted for application in modelling processes, where phase transition may occur, such as during underground coal gasification (UCG). The mathematical model of the medium (soil/rock with pores filled with liquid/gas) in non-isothermal conditions is based on Biot's poroelasticity model. The poroelasticity model is expanded here by the influence of temperature and adjusted to the case where both liquid and highly compressible fluid are present in pores by using the gas laws. This requires considering temperature-dependent physical quantities such as pore fluid density, heat transfer coefficient and viscosity as functions of temperature. Based on the proposed mathematical model and the finite element method, a numerical model was built for the purpose of computing processes occurring in the vicinity of the UCG generator. The result of the authors’ work is a three-dimensional (3D) model, which was not only modified, but derived straight from the laws of thermodynamics, where fields of displacement, temperature and fluid flow are coupled. The model makes it possible to determine results significant to modelling of the UCG process, the reach of the gaseous phase's presence in pores, subsidence values, temperature distribution and directions and rate of seepage, without losing the simplicity and elegance of Biot's original concept. Next, the results of simulations for a hypothetical deposit to estimate the environmental impact of UCG are presented. After applying specific geometry and parameters, the model can be useful for verifying if the chosen technology of UCG in specific conditions will be safe for the environment and infrastructure.

    Description: RTKLIB which is an open source Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) software has gained rapid acceptance among Surveying professionals thanks to recent developments in UAS (Unmanned Aerial System) technology. RTKLIB enables standard and precise point positioning (PPP) in real-time and post-processing modes to be performed. As such, UAS users utilize this software to analyze GNSS data collected by GNSS systems on UAS. By being versatile and free, RTKLIB is commonly used by many; however, it is not the only freely available GNSS software. There are also freely available online GNSS data processing software running on servers. These online GNSS data processing services provide data processing in static, kinematic and rapid static modes. Because UAS collect data in kinematic mode, in this study, kinematic data processing by aforementioned software (CSRS-PPP, GAPS and APPS) is analyzed. The results coming from these software are compared against the results produced by photogrammetric software (Agisoft Metashape and Pix4Dmapper). The aim of this practical project is to produce generalizable knowledge about the performance of these software. It is found out that RTKLIB and CSRS-PPP achieved cm-level precision. Yet, GAPS and APPS achieved dm-level precision both for horizontal and vertical coordinates. This study demonstrates the precision and accuracy expected from these software if they are used for kinematic GNSS data processing.

    Description: The tide gauge record at Brest, France, along Eastern part of Atlantic coast is one of the longest records in Europe spanning 212 years (1807–2019). Analyzing these records has important ramifications in assessing anthropogenic impact of climate change at local and regional scales during this period. All the previous studies that analyzed Brest’s tide gauge record have used vaguely defined quadratics models and did not incorporate the effect of sea level variations at various frequencies, which confounded the presence or absence of a plausible uniform acceleration. Here, we entertained two competing kinematic models; one with a uniform acceleration representing 212 years of monthly averaged tide gauge data, the other is a two-phase trend model (Phase I is 93 years long and Phase II is 119 years long). Both models include statistically significant (α = 0.05) common periodic effects, and sub and super harmonics of luni-solar origin for representing monthly averaged sea level anomalies observed at Brest. The least squares statistics for both models’ solutions cannot distinguish one model over the other, like earlier studies. However, the assessment of Phase I segment of the records disclosed the absence of a statistically significant trend and a uniform acceleration during this period. This outcome eliminates conclusively the occurrence of a uniform acceleration during the entire 212-year data span of the tide gauge record at Brest, favoring the two-phase trend model as a sound alternative.

    Description: Because oceans cover 71% of Earth’s surface, ocean warming, consequential for thermal expansion of sea water, has been the largest contributor to the global mean sea level rise averaged over the 20 th and the early 21 st century. This study first generates quasi-observed monthly globally averaged thermosteric sea level time series by removing the contributions of global mean sea level budget components, namely, Glaciers, Greenland, Antarctica, and Terrestrial Water Storage from satellite altimetry measured global sea level changes during 1993–2019. A baseline kinematic model with global mean thermosteric sea level trend and a uniform acceleration is solved to evaluate the performance of a rigorous mixed kinematic model. The model also includes coefficients of monthly lagged 60 yearlong cumulative global mean sea surface temperature gradients and control variables of lunisolar origins and representations for first order autoregressive disturbances. The mixed kinematic model explains 94% (Adjusted R 2)1 of the total variability in quasi-observed monthly and globally averaged thermosteric time series compared to the 46% of the baseline kinematic model’s Adjusted R 2. The estimated trend, 1.19±0.03 mm/yr., is attributed to the long-term ocean warming. Whereas eleven statistically significant (α = 0.05) monthly lagged cumulative global mean sea surface temperature gradients each having a memory of 60 years explain the remainder transient global mean thermosteric sea level changes due to the episodic ocean surface warming and cooling during this period. The series also exhibit signatures of a statistically significant contingent uniform global sea level acceleration and periodic lunisolar forcings.

    Description: The impact of the earth’s atmospheric layers, particularly the troposphere on Global Navigation satellite system (GNSS) signals has become a major concern in GNSS accurate positioning, navigation, surveillance and timing applications. For precise GNSS applications, tropospheric delay has to be mitigated as accurately as possible using tropospheric delay prediction models. However, the choice of a particular prediction model can signifi-cantly impair the positioning accuracy particularly when the model does not suit the user’s environment. A performance assessment of these prediction models for a suitable one is very important. In this paper, an assessment study of the performances of five blind tropospheric delay prediction models, the UNB3m, EGNOS, GTrop, GPT2w and GPT3 models was conducted in Ghana over six selected Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) using the 1˚x1˚ gridded Vienna Mapping Function 3 (VMF3) zenith tropospheric delay (ZTD) product as a reference. The gridded VMF3-ZTD which is generated for every six hours on the 1˚x1˚ grids was bilinearly interpolated both space and time and transferred from the grid heights to the respective heights of the CORS locations. The results show that the GPT3 model performed better in estimating the ZTD with an overall mean (bias: 2.05 cm; RMS: 2.53 cm), followed by GPT2w model (bias: 2.32cm; RMS: 2.76cm) and GTrop model (bias: 2.41cm; 2.82cm). UNB3m model (bias: 6.23 cm; RMS: 6.43 cm) and EGNOS model (bias: 6.70 cm; RMS: 6.89 cm) performed poorly. A multiple comparison test (MCT) was further performed on the RMSE of each model to check if there is significant difference at 5% significant level. The results show that the GPT3, GPT2w and GTrop models are significantly indifferent at 5% significance level indicating that either of these models can be employed to mitigate the ZTD in the study area, nevertheless, the choice of GPT3 model will be more preferable.

    Description: Detection and quantification of sea level accelerations at tide gauge stations are needed for assessing anthropogenic contributions to the climate change. Nonetheless, uniform or non-uniform sea level accelerations/decelerations are particularly di˚cult to discern partly because of their small magnitudes and partly because of the low frequency sea level variations as confounders. Moreover, noisy excursions in the observed sea level variations also exacerbate reliability of estimated sea level accelerations. This study explores the uniformity of a sea level acceleration graphically that is left unmodeled in the residuals of a least squares solution using cumulative sum charts. Key West, USA tide gauge station’s record is studied for a demonstration. The cumulative sum charts of the residuals of a rigorous kinematic model solution without the acceleration parameter revealed its crisp and uniform signature experienced at this station since 1913.

    Description: Arne Bjerhammar is well known worldwide mainly for his research in physical geodesy but also for introducing a new matrix algebra with generalized inverses applied in geodetic adjustment. Less known are his developments in geodetic engineering and contributions to satellite and relativistic geodesy as well as studies on the relation between the Fennoscandia land uplift and the regional gravity low. Most likely part of his research has contributed to worldwide political relaxation during the cold war, which deed was honored by a certificate of achievement awarded by the Department of Research of the US army as well as the North Star Order by the King of Sweden. Arne Bjerhammar’s pioneer scientific production, in particular on a world geodetic system, towards what would become GPS, as well as relativistic geodesy, is still of great interest among the worldwide geodetic community, while the memories and spirit along his outstanding academic deeds have more or less fainted away from his home university (KTH) only a decade after he passed away.

    Description: The Geocentric Datum of Australia 2020 (GDA2020) is Australia’s new and much improved national datum. It is based on a single, nationwide least squares network adjustment that rigorously propagates uncertainty. This paper explores three options to include Network Real-Time Kinematic (NRTK) observations and their Positional Uncertainty (PU) in the survey control network of New South Wales (NSW) via the GDA2020 state adjustment. In the first option, PU is empirically estimated based on a dataset of more than 1,500 observations to obtain values that can be uniformly applied to all NRTK observations. In the second option, PU is calculated for each NRTK observation, based on the coordinate quality indicators provided by the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) equipment. Both options continue to treat NRTK observations as point-based position solutions, resulting in poor correlation with surrounding survey control marks. The third option overcomes this issue by utilising the automatically computed GNSS baselines between NRTK observations and their Virtual Reference Station (VRS) to create a connected network that can be adjusted like a static GNSS network. Using a typical urban NRTK survey in Sydney as an example, it is shown that this method offers a rigorous computation of PU, while maintaining the quick and easy nature of NRTK positioning.

    Description: The coastal marine gravity field is not well modelled due to poor data coverage. Recent satellite altimeters provide reliable altimetry observations near the coast, filling the gaps between the open ocean and land. We show the potential of recent satellite altimetry for the coastal marine gravity modelling using the least squares collocation technique. Gravity prediction error near the coast is better than 4 mGal. The modelled gravity anomalies are validated with sparse shipborne gravimetric measurements. We obtained 4.86 mGal precision when using the altimetry data with the best coastal coverage and retracked with narrow primary peak retracker. The predicted gravity field is an enhancement to EGM2008 over the coastal regions. The potential improvement in alti- metric marine gravity will be beneficial for the next generation of EGM development.

    Description: GNSS satellite signals are affected by the media when traversing Earth’s atmosphere, and the performance of GNSS based positioning and navigation is correlated with these effects. In the ionosphere, the signals are affected by the number of electrons along the signal path which can be quantified by the total electron content. The focus of this article is scintillation effects caused by electrons in the Arctic ionosphere, and the rate of the total electron content index, the ROTI, is used as a measure of the scintillation. Data from permanent GNSS reference stations in Greenland is used to generate maps of the ROTI in Greenland, and the novelty of the work in this paper is the application of the ordinary kriging method as the basis for ROTI maps in the Arctic. Further, the choice of satellite constellations as well as the elevation mask used in the data analyses are analyzed and discussed. Also, the performance of using ordinary kriging for ROTI maps during times with both a low and a very high geomagnetic activity are discussed. The results show that ordinary kriging performs well during high geomagnetic activity, while during low activity the natural neighbor interpolation method is a better choice for the Arctic.

    Description: One of the major challenges of satellite altimetry (SA) is to produce accurate sea surface heights data up to the shoreline, especially in geomorphologically complex sea areas. New advanced re-tracking methods are expected to deliver better results. This study examines the achievable accuracy of Sentinel-3A (S3A) and Jason-3 (JA3) standard retrackers (Ocean and MLE4) with that of improved retrackers adapted for coastal and sea ice conditions (ALES+ SAR for S3A and ALES+ for JA3). The validation of SA data was performed by the integration of tide gauges, hydrodynamic model and high-resolution geoid model. The geoid being a key component that links the vertical reference datum of the SA with other utilized sources. The method is tested in the eastern section of Baltic Sea. The results indicate that on average reliable sea surface height (SSH) data can be obtained 2–3 km from the coastline for S3A (for both Ocean and ALES+SAR) whilst an average distance of 7–10 km for JA3 (MLE4 and ALES+) with a minimum distance of 3–4 km. In terms of accuracy, the RMSE (with respect to a corrected hydrodynamic model) of S3A ALES+ SAR and Ocean retrackers based SSH were 4–5 cm respectively, whereas with the JA3 ALES+ and MLE4 associated SSH RMSE of 6–7 cm can be achieved. The ALES+ and ALES+ SAR retrackers show SSH improvement within a range of 0.5–1 cm compared to the standard retrackers. This assessment showed that the adaptation of localized retrackers for the Baltic Sea (ALES+ and ALES+SAR) produced more valid observation closer to the coast than the standard retrackers and also improved the accuracy of SSH data.

    Description: It is well-known that the longwall mining method (with roof caving) is widely used in underground mining extraction for bedded deposits (e.g. coal) due to its numerous advantages. Generally, this method is not commonly applied for ore deposits such as copper deposit. In Poland, the longwall mining method has been tested for thin copper deposits at the Polkowice-Sieroszowice copper mine (KGHM). Various failure modes were observed during longwall operation in the 5A/1 panel. This paper aims to examine these occurred failures. To do so, an analysis has been conducted using 3D numerical modelling to investigate the failure mode and mechanism. Based on the 3D numerical modelling results with extensive in situ measurements, causes of failure are determined and practical recommendations for further copper longwall operations are presented.

    Description: The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of the Baltic Sea non-tidal loading in the territory of Latvia using observations of the GNSS continuously operating reference stations (CORS) of LatPos, EUPOS®-Riga, EPN and EstPos networks. The GNSS station daily coordinate time series obtained in a double-difference (DD) mode were used. For representation of the sea level dynamics, the Latvian tide gauge records were used. Performed correlation analysis is based on yearly data sets of these observations for the period from 2012 up to 2020. The approach discloses how the non-tidal loading can induce variations in the time series of the regional GNSS station network. This paper increases understanding of the Earth’s surface displacements occurring due to the non-tidal loading effect in Latvia, and is intended to raise the importance and necessity of improved Latvian GNSS time series by removing loading effects.

    Description: Suppose a large and dense point cloud of an object with complex geometry is available that can be approximated by a smooth univariate function. In general, for such point clouds the “best” approximation using the method of least squares is usually hard or sometimes even impossible to compute. In most cases, however, a “near-best” approximation is just as good as the “best”, but usually much easier and faster to calculate. Therefore, a fast approach for the approximation of point clouds using Chebyshev polynomials is described, which is based on an interpolation in the Chebyshev points of the second kind. This allows to calculate the unknown coefficients of the polynomial by means of the Fast Fourier transform (FFT), which can be extremely efficient, especially for high-order polynomials. Thus, the focus of the presented approach is not on sparse point clouds or point clouds which can be approximated by functions with few parameters, but rather on large dense point clouds for whose approximation perhaps even millions of unknown coefficients have to be determined.

    Description: Sandstone is one of the most popular building materials since the earliest times. It has various textures and colours as well as good technical parameters. Sandstones, having such wide applications, are subjected to various external factors during the period of use. So, it is of utmost importance to have a good knowledge of their strength parameters. We employed a numerical method called Discrete Element Method to examine in a non-invasive manner the mechanical strength of industrial sandstones, that are commonly used as broken stones in road construction, cladding material, paving stones, pavement tiles and so on. Various mechanical external factors were considered, such as breaking, compressional and abrasion forces or impact by external objects and vibrations. Fragmentation of the considered sandstones under compressional regime was a source of knowledge about energy storage inside the material and energy release, as well as appearance of fractures inside the matter and final sandstone fragmentation into crumbs.

    Description: The ionospheric total electron content (TEC) severely impacts the positional accuracy of a single frequency Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver at the equatorial latitudes. The ionosphere causes a frequency-dependent group delay in the GPS-ranging signals, which reduces the receiver’s accuracy. Further, the variations in TEC due to various space weather phenomena make the ionosphere’s behaviour nonhomogeneous and complex. Hence, developing an accurate forecast model that can track the dynamic behaviour of the ionosphere remains a challenge. However, advances in emerging data-driven algorithms have been found helpful in tracking non-stationary behavior in TEC. These models help forecast the delays in advance. The multivariate Vector Autoregression model (VAR) predicts the Ionospheric TEC in the proposed model. The prediction model uses input data compiled in real-time from the lag values of incoming TEC data and features extracted from TEC. The TEC is predicted in real-time and tested for different prediction intervals. The metrics – Mean Percentage Error (MAPE), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) are used for testing and validating the accuracy of the model statistically. Testing the predicted output accuracy is also done with the dynamic time warping (DTW) algorithm by comparing it with the actual value obtained from the dual-frequency receiver. The model is tested for storm days of the year 2015 for Bangalore and Hyderabad stations and found to be reliable and accurate. A prediction interval of twenty-minute shows the highest accuracy with an error within 10 TECU for all the storm days.

    Description: Since the development of GNSS techniques, the determination of a precise quasi-geoid model has become even more actual. In terms of this project the staff of the Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformatics (GGI) has developed a new quasi-geoid model based on DFHRS (Digital Finite-element Height Reference Surface) approach additionally using astrogeodetic measurements – vertical deflections (VD), which can be observed by a Digital zenith camera. This paper evaluates a quasi-geoid model results based on vertical deflections, as a study area using the territory of Latvia: the standard deviation of the solution is equal to 0.006 m with observation residuals after the adjustment of minimum and maximum differences −0.012 and 0.012 accordingly. The standard deviation of quasi-geoid heights and h-H values from LGIA database is equal to 0.012 m with minimum and maximum differences −0.026 and 0.025 accordingly. The post-processed terrestrial VD observations have been compared to VD derivatives from EGM2008 and GGMplus geopotential models. The developed quasi-geoid has been compared to the national quasi-geoid model LV’14 and to the Scandinavian NKG2015.

    Description: With the rapidly developing road transport, there is a demand for new roads to be constructed and for the existing ones to be repaired or extended. The base of any road is its foundation, usually made of crushed or uncrushed aggregate. To be used for road foundation purposes, a material needs to meet many requirements, as imposed by relevant standards. One of the basic tests to assess the suitability of an aggregate is to determine its California bearing ratio (CBR). This paper presents the results of CBR tests for mixed aggregate with the grading of 0–31.5 and 0–63 mm. Detailed assessments were carried out for penetration curves, which in many cases need to be adjusted to meet industry standards. The adjustment of plunger penetration curves in aggregate samples causes CBR to increase compared to the original curves.

    Description: The aim of this work is to explore, for the first time in Poland, the possibility of determining Earth’s crust movements from permanent observations at selected permanent stations using the GipsyX software for a period of 8 years (2011–2018) in the ITRF2014 reference frame. The data used in this work are from 15 Aktywna Sieć Geodezyjna (ASG)-EUPOS stations from 2011 to 2018, which are also European Permanent Network (EPN) stations. The stations Borowa Góra, Borowiec, Józefosław, Lamkówko, and Wroclaw are also International Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) Service (IGS) stations. Daily data, rinex files, for these stations have been made available for this work by the Main Office of Surveying and Cartography. The calculations were made using the GipsyX software in the ITRF14 reference frame. The tests performed have shown that daily solutions from 8-year-long time series give secular trends with an accuracy of 0.01 mm/yr. Our results suggest that there are small differences in horizontal and vertical velocities and in the accuracy estimated between our and EPN solutions. At some stations, for example, Łódź, the differences are much larger. The impact of additional GNSS observations on the accuracy of determination of horizontal and vertical movements of the Earth’s crust shows a submillimeter accuracy in computed coordinates of stations even at a relatively small time interval. It means that multi-GNSS Precise Point Positioning (PPP) processing can be used in the future for the estimation of geodynamic processes.

    Description: In this paper, constrained minimization for the point of closest approach of two conic sections is developed. For this development, we considered the nine cases of possible conics, namely, (elliptic–elliptic), (elliptic–parabolic), (elliptic–hyperbolic), (parabolic–elliptic), (parabolic–parabolic), (parabolic–hyperbolic), (hyperbolic–elliptic), (hyperbolic–parabolic), and (hyperbolic–hyperbolic). The developments are considered from two points of view, namely, analytical and computational. For the analytical developments, the literal expression of the minimum distance equation (S) and the constraint equation (G), including the first and second derivatives for each case, are established. For the computational developments, we construct an efficient algorithm for calculating the minimum distance by using the Lagrange multiplier method under the constraint on time. Finally, we compute the closest distance S between two conics for some orbits. The accuracy of the solutions was checked under the conditions that L| solution ≤ ɛ1; G| solution ≤ ɛ2, where ɛ1,2 〈 10−10. For the cases of (parabolic–parabolic), (parabolic–hyperbolic), and (hyperbolic–hyperbolic), we studied thousands of comets, but the condition of the closest approach was not met.

    Description: The release of low-cost dual-frequency (DF) global navigation satellite system (GNSS) modules provides an opportunity for low-cost precise positioning to support autonomous vehicle applications. The new GNSS modules support the US global positioning system (GPS) L1C/L2C or L5 civilian signals, the Russian GNSS Globalnaya Navigazionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema (GLONASS) L1/L2, Europe’s GNSS Galileo E1/E5b, and Chinese GNSS BeiDou B1/B2 signals. The availability of the DF measurements allows for removal of the ionospheric delay, enhancing the obtained positioning accuracy. Unfortunately, however, the L2C signals are only transmitted by modernized GPS satellites. This means that fewer GPS DF measurements are available. This, in turn, might affect the accuracy and the convergence of the GPS-only precise point positioning (PPP) solution. Multi-constellation GNSS PPP has the potential to improve the positioning accuracy and solution convergence due to the high redundancy of GNSS measurements. This paper aims to assess the performance of real-time quad-constellation GNSS PPP using the low-cost u-blox Z9D-F9P module. The assessment is carried out for both open-sky and challenging environment scenarios. Static, simulated-kinematic, and actual field-kinematic trials have been carried out to evaluate real-time PPP performance. Pre-saved real-time precise orbit and clock products from the Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales are used to simulate the real-time scenario. It is shown that the quad-constellation GNSS PPP using the low-cost u-blox Z9D-F9P module achieves decimeter-level positioning accuracy in both the static and simulated-kinematic modes. In addition, the PPP solution convergence is improved compared to the dual- and triple-constellation GNSS PPP counterparts. For the actual kinematic trial, decimeter-level horizontal positioning accuracy is achieved through the GPS + GLONASS + Galileo PPP compared with submeter-level positioning accuracy for the GPS + GLONASS and GPS + Galileo PPP counterparts. Additionally, submeter-level vertical positioning accuracy is achieved through the GPS + GLONASS + Galileo PPP compared with meter-level positioning accuracy for GPS + GLONASS and GPS + Galileo PPP counterparts.

    Description: To estimate Moho depth, geoid, gravity anomaly, and other geopotential functionals, gravity data is needed. But, gravity survey was not collected in equal distribution in Ethiopia, as the data forming part of the survey were mainly collected on accessible roads. To determine accurate Moho depth using Global Gravity Models (GGMs) for the study area, evaluation of GGMs is needed based on the available terrestrial gravity data. Moho depth lies between 28 km and 32 km in Afar. Gravity disturbances (GDs) were calculated for the terrestrial gravity data and the recent GGMs for the study area. The model-based GDs were compared with the corresponding GD obtained from the terrestrial gravity data and their differences in terms of statistical comparison parameters for determining the best fit GGM at a local scale in Afar. The largest standard deviation (SD) (36.10 mGal) and root mean square error (RMSE) (39.00 mGal) for residual GD and the lowest correlation with the terrestrial gravity (0.61 mGal) were obtained by the satellite-only model (GO_CONS_GCF_2_DIR_R6). The next largest SD (21.27 mGal) and RMSE (25.65 mGal) for residual GD were obtained by the combined gravity model (XGM2019e_2159), which indicates that it is not the best fit model for the study area as compared with the other two GGMs. In general, the result showed that the combined models are more useful tools for modeling the gravity field in Afar than the satellite-only GGMs. But, the study clearly revealed that for the study area, the best model in comparison with the others is the EGM2008, while the second best model is the EIGEN6C4.

    Description: Stability checking is an essential element of the dimensioning of steel frame structures. One of the stability checking methods allowed by EN 1993-1-1 is the so-called general method of assessing structural stability, based on buckling curves and relative structure slenderness λ ¯ op { ar lambda _{op}} usually determined through numerical analyses. But this method is not widely used because of the limited computing capabilities of the engineering programs dedicated to static load analyses and difficulties in interpreting the results of the computations. The commonly used computer programs enable one to determine the shape of buckling and critical load amplifier αcr , from which one cannot directly determine the risk of buckling of a real structure. This paper presents a modified and innovative approach to the general method of assessing structural stability, which uses only three parameters, that is, the type of cross section, cross-section strength utilisation and αcr , to determine a member’s/structure’s bearing capacity mobilisation from the stability condition. The problem solution is presented in the form of simple formulas and legible diagrams. Finally, synthetic conclusions are formulated.

    Description: In recent years, computational intelligence has been used to solve optimisation problems. An innovative direction in the development of artificial intelligence methods is multiagent methods of intellectual optimisation, which simulate the collective behaviour of insects, animals and other living beings. It indicates the effectiveness of their behaviour, and hence the effectiveness of these methods, and the ability to be involved in solving applied problems. This article is devoted to the study of the development of road transport networks using the metaheuristic ant method of optimisation based on a number of data. The initial data were geospatial layers of information on slope steepness, engineering structures, forests, perennials, land development and hydrographic objects. The parameters of the behaviour of the studied method under different conditions and volumes of input geospatial data are experimentally established. The Max–Min method of multiagent optimisation is modified. The proposed modification takes into account the functional distance – the coefficient of the complexity of the route, which affects its length. This modification had an effective influence on the behaviour of ants and the choice of optimal routes, taking into account the terrain as one of the factors. The result of the advancement is an informational system, which is capable of formulating flexible options for passing optimal alternative routes between specified settlements.

    Description: KurzfassungDieser Beitrag behandelt das Thema der urbanen Neubaugebiete aus zwei spezifischen Perspektiven: Zum einen geht es nicht primär um das Wohnen, sondern um Wissenschaft und Forschung als Rahmenthema der Stadterweiterung, insbesondere Hochschulstandorte und Wissenschaftsparks. Zum anderen geht es um die Analyse städtischer Management- und Governance-Praktiken, vor allem die Herauslösung großer Vorhaben aus dem üblichen Kontext der Stadtplanung. Zentral ist hier die Definition dieser Vorhaben als „Projekt“ und ihre Unterordnung unter einen spezifischen Steuerungsansatz. Im Kontext der Diskussion von Großprojekten und urbaner Governance ist die These dieses Beitrags, dass sich Projekte umso mehr als Fremdkörper in der Stadtplanung entfalten können (und damit das Ziel auf urbane Integration unterlaufen), umso weniger sie Gegenstand bewährter Planungsprozesse und regulatorischer Praktiken sind. Zur empirischen Illustration dieses Arguments dient die Wissenschaftsstadt Belval im Süden Luxemburgs, die seit 2003 realisiert wird und deren Entwicklung hier kritisch analysiert wird. Als generelle Schlussfolgerungen werden planerische Anforderungen an den Umgang mit großen Neubauvorhaben formuliert.

    Description: The paper describes a mathematical and physical modelling of flow of complex slurries in pipelines, i.e. a flow of slurries composed of solids covering a very broad range of particle sizes that overlaps more than one flow patterns – non-Newtonian, pseudohomogeneous, heterogeneous and fully-stratified. A typical examples are residual products (“tailings”) from mining industry with normal average particle sizes of 20 to 100 μm or more. Experimental results of flows of complex slurries composing of non-Newtonian carrier fluid and three fractions of glass particles in 50 mm pipe are presented. Depending on the particle size, particles show different flow patterns and therefore considerable differences in pressure drops. Fine particles tend behave as a homogeneous matter, while coarser particles exhibit heterogeneous behaviour and even coarser particles form a sliding bed. A mathematical 3-component predictive model for turbulent flow of complex slurries is presented based on well-established semi-empirical formulae developed originally for flows with Newtonian carrier. The predicted values of pressure drops show very reasonable agreement with experimental results and indicate suitability of the model for engineering practice.

    Description: KurzfassungNeuartige Sanitärsysteme zielen auf eine ressourcenorientierte Verwertung von Abwasser ab. Erreicht werden soll dies durch die separate Erfassung von Abwasserteilströmen. In den Fachöffentlichkeiten der Wasserwirtschaft und Raumplanung werden neuartige Sanitärsysteme als ein geeigneter Ansatz für die zukünftige Sicherung der Abwasserentsorgung in ländlichen Räumen betrachtet. Die Praxistauglichkeit dieser Systeme wurde zwar in Forschungsprojekten nachgewiesen, bisher erschweren jedoch für Abwasserentsorger vielfältige Risiken die Einführung einer ressourcenorientierten Abwasserbewirtschaftung. Ausgehend von einer Untersuchung der Kontexte bei der Umsetzung eines neuartigen Sanitärsystems im ländlichen Raum Thüringens wird in diesem Beitrag der Frage nachgegangen, wie auf Landesebene mit dem abwasserwirtschaftlichen Instrumentarium die Einführung von ressourcenorientierten Systemansätzen unterstützt werden kann. Zentrale Elemente des Beitrags sind die Darstellung der wesentlichen Transformationsrisiken in Bezug auf die Einführung innovativer Lösungsansätze, eine Erläuterung der spezifischen abwasserwirtschaftlichen Instrumente sowie die Darlegung von Steuerungsansätzen, mit denen die Einführung von neuartigen Sanitärsystemen gefördert werden kann. Im Ergebnis wird die Realisierbarkeit von neuartigen Sanitärsystemen durch den strategischen Einsatz des Instrumentariums deutlich, gleichwohl die Wasserwirtschaft durch die Erweiterung der bisherigen Systemgrenzen auf die Kooperation mit anderen Bereichen der Daseinsvorsorge angewiesen ist.

    Description: KurzfassungEine Steuerung der Siedlungsentwicklung, die dem Flächensparziel verpflichtet ist, erfordert ein genaues Monitoring. Dieser Beitrag beschreibt, wie die Flächenneuinanspruchnahme für Siedlungs- und Verkehrszwecke mit verschiedenen Planverfahren in Deutschland zusammenhängt. Am Beispiel 30 repräsentativ ausgewählter Gemeinden wurde empirisch ermittelt, in welchem Maße Bund, Länder und Gemeinden zur Flächeninanspruchnahme beitragen. Das Ergebnis dieser Untersuchungen zeigt, dass rund zwei Drittel der Flächenneuinanspruchnahme durch Gemeinden im Rahmen ihrer kommunalen Planungen verursacht werden. Sonstige Entwicklungen, die zum Beispiel aus Planfeststellungsverfahren resultieren und von Bund und Ländern getrieben sind, tragen zu einem Drittel der Flächeninanspruchnahme bei. Der relativ hohe Anteil nicht kommunal veranlasster Flächenneuinanspruchnahmen war so nicht erwartet worden. Das Ergebnis zeigt, dass Flächensparbemühungen auf allen Raum- und Planungsebenen erforderlich sind, um die Nachhaltigkeitsziele zu erreichen. Derartige Untersuchungen benötigen flächendeckende und laufend aktualisierte Geometriegrundlagen zur tatsächlichen Flächennutzung. Nur so sind Veränderungen der Flächennutzung realistisch und zeitnah messbar und eine Überprüfung der Wirkungen der Flächensteuerung möglich. Die laufenden methodisch bedingten Veränderungen in der Flächenerfassung (Geodatenmodellierung, Flächennutzungsnomenklatur) und deren zeitversetzte und unterschiedliche Umsetzung in den Bundesländern beeinträchtigen allerdings das Flächennutzungsmonitoring.

    Description: Rock dwelling organisms (lithobionts) such as cyanobacteria (prokaryotes) and chlorolichens (eukaryotes) abound in the Negev Desert, where they cover almost all calcareous bedrocks and rock particles (cobbles, boulders). In a small limestone watershed in the Negev Highlands, cyanobacteria inhabit the south-facing (SF) bedrocks, epilithic lichens (accompanied by endolithic lichens) inhabit the north-facing (NF) bedrocks, while endolithic lichens cover most of the cobbles and boulders in both aspects. In order to study their contribution to runoff water, a pair of runoff plots was established on habitats with cyanobacteria, endolithic lichens, and epilithic lichens. Rain and runoff were collected during the hydrological year 2006/07, and the chemical composition (Ca, Mg, Na, K, Cl, SO4, HCO3, Si) of the rain and runoff water was analyzed. Several patterns were observed: (a) as indicated by Si, more dust accumulated on the bedrocks; (b) all substrates exhibited high amounts of Ca, and HCO3; (c) while SF-bedrocks showed enrichment in K, both bedrocks (and especially the NF bedrocks), as well as the NF boulders showed an enrichment in Mg. While the enrichment in Ca and HCO3 can be explained by the contribution of the limestone parent material, the enrichment in K and Mg can be explained by the contribution of the living lithobionts, with K being mainly contributed by the cyanobacteria and Mg mainly by the epilithic lichens. Ion enrichment may therefore be aspect-dependent, reflecting the lithobiont distribution within the drainage basin, partially explaining the enrichment in K and Mg previously recorded in runoff water from the Negev.

    Description: Sand burial is a ubiquitous disturbance that influences the ecological and hydrological properties of moss crusts in many sandy desert areas. There is little available information regarding the effect of sand burial on the water repellency (WR) of moss crusts in desert areas. Therefore, this study evaluated the effects of sand burial (sand depths of 0 (control), 0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 10 mm) followed by three simulated precipitation regimes (through applying 4 and 6 mm, 2 and 3 mm, and 1 and 1.5 mm of distilled water at 8-day intervals in spring and autumn, respectively) on the WR of a widespread moss crust dominated by Bryum argenteum Hedw. in a revegetated area of the Tengger Desert, China. The results showed moss crust WR remained subcritical during the whole experiment, and that it considerably decreased immediately after sand burial, even though the values of WR were significantly higher in autumn than those in spring under the same treatment (p 〈 0.05). Furthermore, the depth threshold (TD) values for sand burials that reduced WR to zero were 1 and 2 mm in spring and autumn, respectively. After a recovery period of nearly one-season (72 days), the WR of the moss crust significantly increased (p 〈 0.05). In addition, sand burial had two separate effects on moss crust WR. Specifically, shallower sand burial (burial depth less than 0.5 mm) increased moss crust WR, whereas deeper sand burial (burial depth exceeds 0.5 mm) decreased it. The TD values also significantly increased to 2 and 4 mm in spring and autumn, respectively. These findings about the effects of sand burial on moss crust WR provide additional information that can be used to better understand the influence of sand burial on moss crust colonization and maintenance in arid sand-burial-stressed ecosystems, and to help explain why there are some contrasting viewpoints on biocrust WR.

    Description: The objectives of the study were to: (1) assess the strength of associations of direct CO2 and N2O emissions with the seasonal variations in the relevant soil properties under both tillage systems; 2) evaluate how CT and RT affect magnitudes of seasonal CO2 and N2O fluxes from soil. Field studies were carried out on plots for conventional tillage (up to 0.22–0.25 m) and reduced tillage (up to 0.10–0.12 m) during the growing season and post-harvest period of red clover. The results showed that daily CO2 emissions significantly correlated only with soil temperature during the growing season under conventional and reduced tillage. Soil temperature demonstrated its highest influence on daily N2O emissions only at the beginning of the growing season in both tillage systems. There were no significant inter-system differences in daily CO2 and N2O emissions from soil during the entire period of observations. Over the duration of post-harvest period, water-filled pore space was a better predictor of daily CO2 emissions from soils under CT and RT. The conventional and reduced tillage did not cause significant differences in cumulative N2O and CO2 fluxes from soil.

    Description: KurzfassungIn Deutschland setzt sich der Trend zu steigendem Pro-Kopf-Wohnflächenkonsum fort. Das Erreichen der Reduktionsziele hinsichtlich des Energieverbrauchs von Wohngebäuden wird damit konterkariert. Während die strukturellen Treiber hinter dieser Entwicklung – beispielsweise Präferenzverschiebungen, zunehmender Wohlstand und der demographische Wandel – im Einzelnen deskriptiv gut erforscht sind, herrscht über deren quantitative Einflusskraft Unklarheit. Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird anhand von Daten der Einkommens- und Verbrauchsstichprobe (EVS) für Deutschland zwischen 1978 und 2013 untersucht, inwiefern die Entwicklung des Wohnflächenkonsums durch sozioökonomische und soziodemographische Veränderungen im Zeitverlauf erklärt werden kann. Die Ergebnisse einer Dekompositionsanalyse zeigen, dass demographische Veränderungen, insbesondere die Verkleinerung der mittleren Haushaltsgröße durch Remanenzeffekt und Singularisierung, hauptsächlich für den Anstieg des Pro-Kopf-Wohnflächenkonsums verantwortlich sind. Diese Entwicklung geht mit steigenden Wohnkosten einher, welche alle Einkommensgruppen, jedoch überproportional ärmere Haushalte, zunehmend belasten. Die Wohnkostenbelastung dämpfte eine weitere Ausweitung des Wohnflächenkonsums in den vergangenen Jahren. Regional lässt sich zudem ein Ungleichgewicht zwischen Wohnungsangebot und Wohnungsnachfrage identifizieren. Dieses könnte verringert werden, indem kleinere Wohnungen und Häuser gebaut, bestehende Gebäude umgebaut und ältere Bewohnerinnen und Bewohner mit übergroßen Wohnflächen zu einem Umzug motiviert würden. Steuernd müssten dazu regulatorische Maßnahmen und/oder Anreizmechanismen implementiert werden.

    Description: KurzfassungAusgangspunkt des Beitrages ist die Annahme, dass nachhaltige Raumentwicklung in substanzieller Hinsicht an ein relationales Raumverständnis und prozedural an die Auseinandersetzung mit Konflikten gebunden ist. Diese Anforderungen werden auf einen konkreten Gegenstand der räumlichen Planung bezogen: landschaftsbezogene Identitäten. Deren Konzeptualisierung erfolgt als individuelle Deutungen landschaftlicher Spezifik, die sich der Materialität ebenso wie gesellschaftlicher Deutungsmuster bedienen. Für die empirische Erfassung werden landschaftsbezogene Identitäten als Zuspitzung der ‚angeeigneten physischen Landschaft‘ konkretisiert. Im Zentrum des Interesses stehen also solche Merkmale, die zur individuellen Konstruktion spezifischer Landschaft ‚zusammengeschaut‘ werden und auf die sich Zugehörigkeits- bzw. Zusammengehörigkeitsvorstellungen sowie emotionale Zuwendungen beziehen. An diesen als Referenzpunkte bezeichneten Merkmalen kommen auch identitätsrelevante Konflikte zum Ausdruck, also gegensätzliche Deutungen landschaftlicher Spezifik. In einer ländlichen Fallstudienregion werden so verstandene landschaftsbezogene Identitäten mit qualitativ-rekonstruktiven Methoden sichtbar gemacht. Die Ergebnisse von 28 leitfadengestützten Interviews belegen ein vielfältiges Spektrum an Referenzpunkten, die zwar individuell unterschiedlich besetzt sind, aber dennoch wiederholt auftreten. Zudem zeigen sich gegensätzliche Deutungsmuster: Dieselben Merkmale gelten den einen als identitätsstiftend, den anderen nicht. Die Diskussion resümiert die theoretisch-konzeptionellen und methodologischen Überlegungen vor dem Hintergrund der empirischen Ergebnisse und leitet Implikationen für die räumliche Planung ab. Ein besonderer Fokus liegt dabei auf Handlungsempfehlungen zur Bearbeitung konfliktär verfasster Lesarten landschaftsbezogener Identität.

    Description: Climate change and human activity are two linked factors that alter the spatiotemporal distribution of the available water. Assessing the relative contribution of the two factors on runoff changes can help the planners and managers to better formulate strategies and policies regarding regional water resources. In this work, using two typical sub-basins of the Yellow River as the study area, we first detected the trend and the breakpoint in the annual streamflow data with the Pettitt test during the period 1964–2011. Next, a Budyko-based climate elasticity model and a monthly hydrological model were employed as an integrated method to distinguish the relative contributions of climate change and human activities to the long-term changes in runoff. The results showed that a significant decline in the annual runoff occurred in the two sub-basins during the study period, and the abrupt change point in the annual runoff at the two sub-basins both occurred in 1997. The conceptual hydrological model performed well in reproducing monthly runoff time series at the two sub-basins. The Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) between observed and simulated runoff during the validation period exceeds 0.83 for the two sub-basins. Climate elasticity method and hydrological model give consistent attribution results: human activities are the major drivers responsible for the decreased annual runoff in the Ten Great Gullies Basin. The relative contributions of climate change and human activities to the changes in the annual runoff were 22–32% and 68–78%, respectively.

    Description: The two-dimensional particle image velocimetry (PIV) data are inevitably contaminated by noise due to various imperfections in instrumentation or algorithm, based on which the well-established vortex identification methods often yield noise or incomplete vortex structure with a jagged boundary. To make up this deficiency, a novel method was proposed in this paper and the efficiency of the new method was demonstrated by its applications in extracting the two-dimensional spanwise vortex structures from 2D PIV data in open-channel flows. The new method takes up a single vortex structure by combining model matching and vorticity filtering, and successfully locates the vortex core and draws a streamlined vortex boundary. The new method shows promise as being more effective than commonly used schemes in open-channel flow applications.

    Description: Lake Śniardwy is the largest among more than 7000 Polish lakes. So far, it has not been a subject of detailed investigations concerning long-term changes in water temperature or ice regime. A considerable change in thermal and ice conditions has been observed in the period 1972–2019. Mean annual water temperature increased by 0.44°C dec−1 on average, and was higher than an increase in air temperature (0.33°C dec−1). In the monthly cycle, the most dynamic changes occurred in April (0.77°C dec−1). In the case of ice cover, it appeared increasingly later (5.3 days dec−1), and disappeared earlier (3.0 days dec−1). The thickness of ice cover also decreased (2.4 cm dec−1). Statistical analysis by means of a Pettitt test showed that the critical moment for the transformations of the thermal and ice regime was the end of the 1980’s. In addition to the obvious relations with air temperature for both characteristics, it was evidenced that the occurrence of ice cover depended on wind speed and snow cover. The recorded changes in the case of Lake Śniardwy are considered unfavourable, and their consequences will affect the course of physical, chemical, and biological processes in the largest lake in Poland.

    Description: Dams have an important role in the industrial development of countries. Irrespective of the reason for dam break, the flood can cause devastating disasters with loss of life and property especially in densely populated areas. In this study, the effects of the vegetation on the flood wave propagation in case of dam break were investigated experimentally by using the distorted physical model of Ürkmez Dam. The horizontal and vertical scales of the distorted physical model are 1/150 and 1/30, respectively. The dam break scenarios were achieved by means of a gate of rectangular and triangular shape. The results obtained from experiments performed with vegetation were compared and interpreted with those obtained from experiments at which the vegetation configuration was absent. The analysis of the experimental data showed that the presence of vegetation causes a significant decrease in water depths as the flood wave propagates to the downstream and greatly reduces its impact on the settlements. It is also revealed that dam break shape plays an important role in temporal variation of flood wave.

    Description: In this paper, the risk zone mapping of declining lowland forests belonging to „Morović“, management unit „Varadin-Županja“ (northern Serbia) is performed using geostatistics analysis. Based on the monitoring of groundwater level, the Kriging method has been performed for the spatial distribution of groundwater level for a multiyear period (2010–2013) – reference level and characteristic levels for the wettest and the driest year during the analyzed period. Risk assessment was determined by the variance of characteristics compared to reference levels. Then, multi-criteria decision analysis methods (AHP, PROMETHEE II) were applied to define the rank of each department (smaller forest management units) located in the research area. These analyses are very important because they enable to locate of the area with a high risk of forest decline and to rank departments using criteria: deviation from water level recorded during dry periods, species demand for water, conservation status and purpose of the unit (seed stands or technical wood). The proposed methodology is usable for the determination of the primary localities for the application of management measures conducting on the level of lower planned units (departments) and thus lead to the successful planning and more efficient forest management. Obtained results at the researched area showed that a negative influence on the watering regime has groundwater level decreasing compared to the reference level because it directly affects available water for the plants. Based on multicriteria analysis methods, it was deduced that the most endangered parts are located at the edge, while this risk is much lower in the central part of the management unit. A combination of applied methods (geostatistics and multicriteria analysis) is of great importance for forestry management.

    Description: A three-dimensional numerical model was applied to simulate submerged spatial hydraulic jumps (SSHJ) downstream of a symmetric vent that discharges into a wider channel. Simulations were carried out for different aspect ratios of the vent, expansion ratios of vent width to downstream channel width, tailwater depth, and inlet Froude number. Depending on these factors, simulations indicated the formation of steady asymmetric SSHJ, oscillatory asymmetric SSHJ, and steady symmetric SSHJ, consistent with results of previous experimental studies. The model reproduced observed depth downstream of vent, jump length, and velocity profiles along channel centerline for steady symmetric SSHJ. For oscillatory asymmetric SSHJ, simulated oscillation frequencies had Strouhal numbers that varied with expansion ratio and ranged between 0.003 and 0.015. With piers downstream of the vent, oscillatory SSHJ continued to exhibit jet deflections when pier length was relatively short ( ≲ 0.2 of jump length) but became steady asymmetric for longer piers.

    Description: KurzfassungDieser Beitrag knüpft an aktuelle Diskurse zu Digitalisierungsprozessen und Raumentwicklung an. Es wird untersucht, inwiefern durch digitalisierte Fertigungsmethoden (wie Industrie-4.0-Anwendungen) neue Formen urbaner Produktion entstehen können. Aufbauend auf theoretisch-konzeptionellen Überlegungen wurden empirische Erkenntnisse durch 41 Experteninterviews in acht industriell geprägten Städten Nordrhein-Westfalens gewonnen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass durch die gewerbliche Anwendung neuer digitaler Fertigungsverfahren neuartige Formen hybrider digitaler urbaner Produktion entstehen, die spezifischen problemzentrierten Wertschöpfungslogiken unterliegen. Der Beitrag entwickelt ein präziseres Verständnis dieser Wertschöpfungsprozesse und der Standorteinbettung hybrider digitaler urbaner Produktion.

    Description: Universities are important economic actors and make a considerable impact on the demand and supply side of their local economies. The aim of this paper is to quantify, compare and classify the different economic demand-and supply-side contributions of the university locations within Lower Saxony (Germany) using a combination of multiplier analysis and spatial econometrics on a NUTS 3 level. In comparison to numerous other studies, this paper does not focus on the economic impact of individual cases or a selected university location but gives a complete picture of the importance and significance of all university locations within Lower Saxony. The income-induced direct and indirect demand effects are estimated using a rich data set of higher education statistics in combination with an income and employment multiplier derived from a regional input-output table. The supply-side effects, i.e. the impact of the education and research outcomes, are estimated with the help of spatial panel regressions, a model derived from human capital theory and knowledge spillover theory. The estimation results give a complete and reproducible impression of the importance and significance of the different university locations, offering the opportunity for comparisons and classifications.

    Description: ZusammenfassungDie Mobilität von Kindern hat sich in den vergangenen Jahren zu einem kaum noch überschaubaren Forschungsfeld entwickelt, in dem Deutschland jedoch bemerkenswert still bleibt. Die Motivationen für die Forschungen liegen vor allem in der Zunahme des Mitfahrens im Pkw auf Kosten der nichtmotorisierten und/oder selbstständigen Mobilität der Kinder. Dies hat negative Folgen für die Gesundheit und Entwicklung der Kinder und ist unter anderem mit Problemen der Verkehrssicherheit und des Umweltschutzes verbunden. Der Beitrag gibt einen Überblick über das Forschungsfeld. Er diskutiert Schwerpunkte der Forschung, Methoden und Einflussfaktoren der Mobilität von Kindern. Darüber hinaus diskutiert er die – eher spärliche – praxisorientierte Literatur und zeigt Wege auf, wie die nichtmotorisierte und selbstständige Mobilität von Kindern gefördert werden kann.

    Description: Two models of vibrations of the Euler–Bernoulli beam under a moving force, based on two different versions of the nonlocal gradient theory of elasticity, namely, the Eringen model, in which the strain is a function of stress gradient, and the nonlocal model, in which the stress is a function of strains gradient, were studied and compared. A dynamic response of a finite, simply supported beam under a moving force was evaluated. The force is moving along the beam with a constant velocity. Particular solutions in the form of an infinite series and some solutions in a closed form as well as the numerical results were presented.

    Description: The method of unconventional solid rock loosening with undercutting anchors and the literature analysis of the problem are presented. The tests and test results of the rocks loosening process with a fixed undercutting anchor are described. The tests were carried out within the RODEST project, OPUS 10 competition No. 2015/19/B/ST10/02817, financed by the National Science Centre. Numerical modeling process as well as a series of laboratory and in situ tests were carried out. The test stand equipment and methodology for the in situ tests are presented. The tests were conducted in four mines, which allowed to obtain and determine the following characteristics: loosening force as a function of anchoring depth (for a given type of rock),the range of rock loosening in a function of anchoring depth (for a given type of rock), andloosened rock volume as a function of anchoring depth (for a given type of rock).The in situ test results are compared with the concrete capacity design (CCD) model used for the calculation of anchor load capacity in concrete.

    Description: The design of shallow foundations on swelling soils needs a thorough study to evaluate the effect of swelling potential soil on the final foundation heave. For this reason, a simple analytical approach based on the soil stress state under the foundation can be used to calculate the foundation heave. This paper reports a set of analytical and numerical analysis using the finite-difference code (FLAC 3D), performed on an isolated shallow foundation founded on a swelling soil mass at N’Gaous city in Batna Province, Algeria, subjected to distributed vertical loads. Further, the influence of some parameters on total heave was analyzed, such as the embedded foundation and soil stiffness. The analysis results from the proposed 3D modelling was compared and discussed with analytical results. The numerical results obtained show a good agreement with the analytical solutions based on oedometer tests proposed in the literature, and deliver a satisfactory prediction of the heave of the shallow foundations.

    Description: The objective of this paper is to describe the effect of cavities on the bearing capacity of two interfering footings based on granular soil using an exclusively experimental approach with a test model designed in the laboratory. The experimental protocol was carried out based on the variation of several parameters such as the spacing (x) (axis to axis) between the footings, and the distance (H) between the footings and cavities and between the cavities axes (L). The results highlight the effect of cavities and the interference of two strip footings on the bearing capacity factor (q) and efficiency factor (EF). Moreover, the results revealed that, in the case wherein the distance between the footings and the cavity is greater than 3, the cavity impact is eliminated.

    Description: The present study shows the results of a 2D local seismic response (LSR) analysis, simulated for a geomechanical model consisting of a layered carbonate rock mass with hypogean karst caves and a structural–lithostratigraphic complex setting, in an area within the Municipality of Turi (Apulia, Italy). In this case study a Distinct Element Code (DEM) code (UDEC) was used for the LSR simulations conducted on a model both in the absence and in the presence of two overlapping karst caves. The preliminary stress–strain model analysis show some tensile yielding points clustered on the roof of the upper karst cave, already in static conditions, and the phenomenon becomes even more noticeable in dynamic conditions. This is perfectly in agreement with the real occurrence of a sinkhole that brought to the light the underlying karst cave, in the case study area, in the recent past.The amplification/deamplification factor (FA) was calculated as the ratio of the top value to the bottom value in the model, both of the max X-acceleration and of the spectral Fourier amplitude in three different ranges of frequencies, in order to estimate the effects of LSR on the X-component of the seismic input. According to the previous studies, the results obtained show a generalised deamplification of the seismic ground motion at the top of the model, both without and with underground karst caves, caused by the presence of the upper karst cave and by the seismic energy absorption because of layers’ discontinuity.
