Beschreibung: Resilience has become an important topic on the safety research agenda and in organizational practice. Most empirical work on resilience has been descriptive, identifying characteristics of work and organizing activity which allow organizations to cope with unexpected situations. Fewer studies have developed testable models and theories that can be used to support interventions aiming to increase resilience and improve safety. In addition, the absent integration of different system levels from individuals, teams, organizations, regulatory bodies, and policy level in theory and practice imply that mechanisms through which resilience is linked across complex systems are not yet well understood. Scientific efforts have been made to develop constructs and models that present relationships; however, these cannot be characterized as sufficient for theory building. There is a need for taking a broader look at resilience practices as a foundation for developing a theoretical framework that can help improve safety in complex systems. This book does not advocate for one definition or one field of research when talking about resilience; it does not assume that the use of resilience concepts is necessarily positive for safety. We encourage a broad approach, seeking inspiration across different scientific and practical domains for the purpose of further developing resilience at a theoretical and an operational level of relevance for different high-risk industries. The aim of the book is twofold: 1. To explore different approaches for operationalization of resilience across scientific disciplines and system levels. 2. To create a theoretical foundation for a resilience framework across scientific disciplines and system levels. By presenting chapters from leading international authors representing different research disciplines and practical fields we develop suggestions and inspiration for the research community and practitioners in high-risk industries. This book is Open Access under a CC-BY licence. ; Explores different approaches for operationalization of resilience across scientific disciplines and system levels Creates a theoretical foundation for a resilience framework across scientific disciplines and system levels Develops suggestions and inspiration for the research community and practitioners in high-risk industries Presents chapters from leading international authors representing different research disciplines and practical fields

Beschreibung: This open access book contains a structured collection of the complete solutions of all essential axisymmetric contact problems. Based on a systematic distinction regarding the type of contact, the regime of friction and the contact geometry, a multitude of technically relevant contact problems from mechanical engineering, the automotive industry and medical engineering are discussed. In addition to contact problems between isotropic elastic and viscoelastic media, contact problems between transversal-isotropic elastic materials and functionally graded materials are addressed, too. The optimization of the latter is a focus of current research especially in the fields of actuator technology and biomechanics. The book takes into account adhesive effects which allow access to contact-mechanical questions about micro- and nano-electromechanical systems. Solutions of the contact problems include both the relationships between the macroscopic force, displacement and contact length, as well as the stress and displacement fields at the surface and, if appropriate, within the half-space medium. Solutions are always obtained with the simplest available method - usually with the method of dimensionality reduction (MDR) or approaches which use the solution of the non-adhesive normal contact problem to solve the respective contact problem.

Beschreibung: This open access book comprises 10 high-level papers on research and innovation within the Flexitranstore Project that were presented at the FLEXITRANSTORE special session organized as part of the 21st International Symposium on High Voltage Engineering. FLEXITRANSTORE (An Integrated Platform for Increased FLEXIbility in smart TRANSmission grids with STORage Entities and large penetration of Renewable Energy Sources) aims to contribute to the development of a pan-European transmission network with high flexibility and high interconnection levels. This will facilitate the transformation of the current energy production mix by hosting an increasing share of renewable energy sources. Novel smart grid technologies, control and storage methods, and new market approaches will be developed, installed, demonstrated, and tested introducing flexibility to the European power system. FLEXITRANSTORE is developing a next-generation Flexible Energy Grid (FEG) that will be integrated into the European Internal Energy Market (IEM) through the valorization of flexibility services. This FEG addresses the capabilities of a power system to maintain continuous service in the face of rapid and large swings in supply or demand. As such, a wholesale market infrastructure and new business models within this integrated FEG must be upgraded for network players, and offer incentives for new ones to join, while at the same time demonstrating new business perspectives for cross-border resource management and energy trading.

Beschreibung: The objective of this book is to help at-risk organizations to decipher the “safety cloud”, and to position themselves in terms of operational decisions and improvement strategies in safety, considering the path already travelled, their context, objectives and constraints. What link can be established between safety culture and safety models in order to increase safety within companies carrying out dangerous activities? First, while the term “safety culture” is widely shared among the academic and industrial world, it leads to various interpretations and therefore different positioning when it comes to assess, improve or change it. Many safety theories, concepts, and models coexist today, being more or less appealing and/or directly useful to the industry. How, and based on which criteria, to choose from the available options? These are some of the questions addressed in this book, which benefits from the expertise of its worldwide famous authors in several industrial sectors.

Beschreibung: This open access book presents work collected through the Liquefaction Experiments and Analysis Projects (LEAP) in 2017. It addresses the repeatability, variability, and sensitivity of lateral spreading observed in twenty-four centrifuge model tests on mildly sloping liquefiable sand. The centrifuge tests were conducted at nine different centrifuge facilities around the world. For the first time, a sufficient number of experiments were conducted to enable assessment of variability of centrifuge test results. The experimental data provided a unique basis for assessing the capabilities of twelve different simulation platforms for numerical simulation of soil liquefaction. The results of the experiments and the numerical simulations are presented and discussed in papers submitted by the project participants. The work presented in this book was followed by LEAP-Asia that included assessment of a generalized scaling law and culminated in a workshop in Osaka, Japan in March 2019. LEAP-2020, ongoing at the time of printing, is addressing the validation of soil-structure interaction analyses of retaining walls involving a liquefiable soil. A workshop is planned at RPI, USA in 2020.

Beschreibung: Uncanny computer-generated animations of splashing waves, billowing smoke clouds, and characters’ flowing hair have become a ubiquitous presence on screens of all types since the 1980s. This Open Access book charts the history of these digital moving images and the software tools that make them. Unpredictable Visual Effects uncovers an institutional and industrial history that saw media industries conducting more private R&D as Cold War federal funding began to wane in the late 1980s. In this context studios and media software companies took concepts used for studying and managing unpredictable systems like markets, weather, and fluids and turned them into tools for animation. Unpredictable Visual Effects theorizes how these animations are part of a paradigm of control evident across society, while at the same time exploring what they can teach us about the relationship between making and knowing.

Beschreibung: This open access book focuses on the development of methods, interoperable and integrated ICT tools, and survey techniques for optimal management of the building process. The construction sector is facing an increasing demand for major innovations in terms of digital dematerialization and technologies such as the Internet of Things, big data, advanced manufacturing, robotics, 3D printing, blockchain technologies and artificial intelligence. The demand for simplification and transparency in information management and for the rationalization and optimization of very fragmented and splintered processes is a key driver for digitization. The book describes the contribution of the ABC Department of the Polytechnic University of Milan (Politecnico di Milano) to R&D activities regarding methods and ICT tools for the interoperable management of the different phases of the building process, including design, construction, and management. Informative case studies complement the theoretical discussion. The book will be of interest to all stakeholders in the building process – owners, designers, constructors, and faculty managers – as well as the research sector.

Beschreibung: It is common for us today to associate the practice of science primarily with the act of seeing—with staring at computer screens, analyzing graphs, and presenting images. We may notice that physicians use stethoscopes to listen for disease, that biologists tune into sound recordings to understand birds, or that engineers have created Geiger tellers warning us for radiation through sound. But in the sciences overall, we think, seeing is believing. This open access book explains why, indeed, listening for knowledge plays an ambiguous, if fascinating, role in the sciences. For what purposes have scientists, engineers and physicians listened to the objects of their interest? How did they listen exactly? And why has listening often been contested as a legitimate form of access to scientific knowledge? This concise monograph combines historical and ethnographic evidence about the practices of listening on shop floors, in laboratories, field stations, hospitals, and conference halls, between the 1920s and today. It shows how scientists have used sonic skills—skills required for making, recording, storing, retrieving, and listening to sound—in ensembles: sets of instruments and techniques for particular situations of knowledge making. Yet rather than pleading for the emancipation of hearing at the expense of seeing, this essay investigates when, how, and under which conditions the ear has contributed to science dynamics, either in tandem with or without the eye.

Beschreibung: The conventional approach to risk communication, based on a centralized and controlled model, has led to blatant failures in the management of recent safety related events. In parallel, several cases have proved that actors not thought of as risk governance or safety management contributors may play a positive role regarding safety. Building on these two observations and bridging the gap between risk communication and safety practices leads to a new, more societal perspective on risk communication, that allows for smart risk governance and safety management. Beschreibung: This open access book provides a concise explanation of the fundamentals and background of the surround sound recording and playback technology Ambisonics. It equips readers with the psychoacoustical, signal processing, acoustical, and mathematical knowledge needed to understand the inner workings of modern processing utilities, special equipment for recording, manipulation, and reproduction in the higher-order Ambisonic format. The book comes with various practical examples based on free software tools and open scientific data for reproducible research. The book’s introductory section offers a perspective on Ambisonics spanning from the origins of coincident recordings in the 1930s to the Ambisonic concepts of the 1970s, as well as classical ways of applying Ambisonics in first-order coincident sound scene recording and reproduction that have been practiced since the 1980s. As, from time to time, the underlying mathematics become quite involved, but should be comprehensive without sacrificing readability, the book includes an extensive mathematical appendix. The book offers readers a deeper understanding of Ambisonic technologies, and will especially benefit scientists, audio-system and audio-recording engineers. In the advanced sections of the book, fundamentals and modern techniques as higher-order Ambisonic decoding, 3D audio effects, and higher-order recording are explained. Those techniques are shown to be suitable to supply audience areas ranging from studio-sized to hundreds of listeners, or headphone-based playback, regardless whether it is live, interactive, or studio-produced 3D audio material.

Notizen: Summary The compositional distributions of coding sequences and DNA molecules (in the 50-100-kb range) are remarkably narrower in murids (rat and mouse) compared to humans (as well as to all other mammals explored so far). In murids, both distributions begin at higher and end at lower GC values. A comparison of homologous coding sequences from murids and humans revealed that their different compositional distributions are due to differences in GC levels in all three codon positions, particularly of genes located at both ends of the distribution. In turn, these differences are responsible for differences in both codon usage and amino acids. When GC levels at first+second codon positions and third codon positions, respectively, of murid genes are plotted against corresponding GC levels of homologous human genes, linear relationships (with very high correlation coefficients and slopes of about 0.78 and 0.60, respectively) are found. This indicates a conservation of the order of GC levels in homologous genes from humans and murids. (The same comparison for mouse and rat genes indicates a conservation of GC levels of homologous genes.) A similar linear relationship was observed when plotting GC levels of corresponding DNA fractions (as obtained by density gradient centrifugation in the presence of a sequence-specific ligand) from mouse and human. These findings indicate that orderly compositional changes affecting not only coding sequences but also noncoding sequences took place since the divergence of murids. Such directional fixations of mutations point to the existence of selective pressures affecting the genome as a whole.

Notizen: Summary A member of the young PV Alu sub-family is detected in chimpanzee DNA showing that the PV subfamily is not specific to human DNA. This particular Alu is absent from the orthologous loci in both human and gorilla DNAs, indicating that PV subfamily members transposed within the chimpanzee lineage following the divergence of chimpanzee from both gorilla and human. These findings and previous reports describing the transpositional activity of other Alu sequences within the human, gorilla, and chimpanzee lineages provide phylogenetic evidence for the existence of multiple Alu source genes. Sequences surrounding this particular Alu resemble known transcriptional control elements associated with RNA polymerase III, suggesting a mechanism by which cis-acting elements might be acquired upon retrotransposition.

Notizen: Summary A new statistical test has been developed to detect selection on silent sites. This test compares the codon usage within a gene and thus does not require knowledge of which genes are under the greatest selection, that there exist common trends in codon usage across genes, or that genes have the same mutation pattern. It also controls for mutational biases that might be introduced by the adjacent bases. The test was applied to 62 mammalian sequences, the significant codon usage biases were detected in all three species examined (humans, rats, and mice). However, these biases appear not to be the consequence of selection, but of the first base pair in the codon influencing the mutation pattern at the third position.

Notizen: Summary The identification of genetically coherent populations is essential for understanding human evolution. Among the culturally uniform ethnic groups of west Africa, there are two geographically distinct populations with high frequencies of sickle-cell hemoglobin (HbS). Although the HbS mutation in each group is found on distinguishable chromosomes 11, these populations have been assumed to be parts of a single population. Analysis of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in these populations demonstrated that the two populations identified by alternative chromosomes 11 bearing HbS have distinct distributions of mitochondrial genotypes, i.e., they are maternally separate. These studies also showed that, contrary to expectation, the mtDNA of some individuals is heteroplasmic. For nuclear loci, a comparison of the frequency of alternative alleles established that these populations are genetically distinct. Both the mitochondrial and nuclear data indicate that these populations have been separate for approximately 50,000 years. Although HbS in the two populations is usually attributed to recent, independent mutations, the duration of the separation and the observed geographic distribution of the population allow for the possibility of an ancient origin of HbS. Assuming an ancient mutation and considering the known biogeography, we suggest that HbS protected selected populations from malaria in rain forest refuges during the most recent ice age.

By adding the estimated amounts of chemicals needed to induce cancer and by comparing it with the amount of raw mushroom needed to induce the same effect, it becomes obvious that we have accounted for less than 2% of the carcinogenic components of theAgaricus bisporus mushroom. Since some unavailable data handicapped this assessment, it should be regarded as tentative and subject to further adjustment.

Notizen: Abstract Data obtained from the literature on the annual pattern of human conceptions and plasma melatonin at high latitudes indicated that simple annual rhythms do not exist. Instead, prominent semiannual rhythms are found, with equinoctial troughs and solsticial peaks. A prominent semiannual environmental event is the magnetic disturbance induced by the solar wind. The semiannual magnetic disturbances are worldwide, but most pronounced in the auroral zones where the corpuscular radiation enters the atmosphere. Magnetic indices that predominantly reflect these events were obtained from the literature and correlated with the melatonin and conception data. Significant and inverse correlations were found for Inuit conceptions and the melatonin data. The correlations obtained for 48 contiguous states of the United States indicated that only the extreme northern states exhibited this relationship. These data were compared with a previous correlational study in the United States which established that sunshine was correlated with conceptions in the middle latitude and southern states. An hypothesis of dual control by electromagnetic and magnetic energies is proposed: melatonin is a progonadal hormone in humans controlled by both factors, depending on their relative strength. Other studies are reviewed regarding the possible factors involved in determining the annual pattern of human conceptions. Demographic studies of geographic variation in temporal patterns of conceptions, with particular regard to variations of the magnetic fields on the earth's surface, may provide some insight into the efficacy of these different factors.

Notizen: Summary Distribution of glycogen particles in semithin and ultrathin sections of biopsy samples from human muscles subjected to either short- or long-term running were investigated using PAS and Periodic Acid-ThioSemiCarbazide-Silver Proteinate (PA-TSC-SP) staining methods. Glycogen particles were predominantly found immediately under the sarcolemma or aligned along the myofibrillar Iband. After long-term exhaustive exercise type-1 fibers with a few or no glycogen particles in the core of the fibers were frequently observed. The subsarcolemmal glycogen stores of these “depleted” type-1 fibers were about three times as large as after exhaustive short-time exercise. Another indication of utilization of subsarcolemmal glycogen stores during anaerobic exercise was that many particles displayed a pale, rudimentary shape. This observation suggests fragmental metabolization of glycogen. Thus, depending on type of exercise and type of fiber differential and sequential glycogen utilization patterns can be observed.

Notizen: Abstract Media reports indicate the decline of the technological literacy of American youth, especially that students in other countries are better prepared in science and mathematics. Our active-learning program, which consists of numerous hands-on experiments, introduces engineering applications into science and math programs, that will demonstrate to students the usefulness of the theory that they currently do not see as useful. The program, when fully developed, will make optimum use of technology, especially computers and videotapes. The hands-on experiments allow students to discover fundamental principles through data analysis and then use the principles to synthesize a solution to a technological problem. This discovery-based education will help school systems better meet performance standards such as those in the Maryland School Performance Plan. The experimental approach to science education is especially important in a technology-oriented economy where children use the new technologies without understanding the principles on which they are based.

Notizen: Abstract The perception of shape from shading was tested in two chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and five humans (Homo sapiens), using visual search tasks. Subjects were required to select and touch an odd item (target) from among uniform distractors. Humans found the target faster when shading was vertical than when it was horizontal, consistent with results of previous research. Both chimpanzees showed the opposite pattern: they found the target faster when shading was horizontal. The same difference in response was found in texture segregation tasks. This difference between the species could not be explained by head rotation or head shift parallel to the surface of the monitor. Furthermore, when the shaded shape was changed from a circle to a square, or the shading type was changed from gradual to stepwise, the difference in performance between vertical and horizontal shading disappeared in chimpanzees, but persisted in humans. These results suggest that chimpanzees process shading information in a different way from humans.

Notizen: Abstract We hypothesized that the viscoelastic properties of the respiratory system should have significant implications for the energetically optimal frequency of breathing, in view of the fact that these properties cause marked dependencies of overall system resistance and elastance on frequency. To test our hypothesis we simulated two models of canine and human respiratory system mechanics during sinusoidal breathing and calculated the inspiratory work ( $$\dot W$$ ) and pressure-time integral (PTI) per minute under both resting and exercise conditions. The two models were a two-compartment viscoelastic model and a single-compartment model. Requiring minute alveolar ventilation to be fixed, we found that both models predicted almost identical optimum breathing frequencies. The calculated PTI was very insensitive to increases in breathing frequency above the optimal frequencies, while $$\dot W$$ was found to increase slowly with frequency above its optimum. In contrast, both $$\dot W$$ and PTI increased sharply as frequency decreased below their respective optima. A sensitivity analysis showed that the model predictions were very insensitive to the elastance and resistance values chosen to characterize tissue viscoelasticity. We conclude that the $$\dot W$$ criterion for choosing the frequency of breathing is compatible with observations in nature, whereas the optimal frequency predictions of the PTI are rather too high. Both criteria allow for a fairly wide margin of choice in frequency above the optimum values without incurring excessive additional energy expenditure. Furthermore, contrary to our expectations, the viscoelastic properties of the respiratory system tissues do not pose a noticeable problem to the respiratory controller in terms of energy expenditure.

Beschreibung: Commercially available software packages for IBM PC-compatibles are evaluated to use for data acquisition and processing work. Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML) acquired computers since 1978 to use on shipboard data acquisition (Le. CTD, radiometric, etc.) and data processing. First Hewlett-Packard desktops were used then a transition to the DEC VAXstations, with software developed mostly by the author and others at MLML (Broenkow and Reaves, 1993; Feinholz and Broenkow, 1993; Broenkow et al, 1993). IBM PC were at first very slow and limited in available software, so they were not used in the early days. Improved technology such as higher speed microprocessors and a wide range of commercially available software made use of PC more reasonable today. MLML is making a transition towards using the PC for data acquisition and processing. Advantages are portability and available outside support.

Beschreibung: The shoaling and bank erosion at Ponce de Leon channel, Punta Gorda, Florida, havecaused concern of harming the mangrove community along the channel. Three factorswere identified that could contribute to the bank erosion of Ponce channel. Theyare tidal induced current, wind waves penetrating from the Charlotte Harbor, andwakes caused by boat traffic. According to the field experiments and numericalmodeling studies, it was determined that the combined wind wave and tidal currentforce is the major cause to the bank erosion. Wind wave appears to play a moreimportant role because of its dynamic nature. For the present cross-sectionalchannel condition the tidal current alone is only a moderate erosional force. It was also found that reopening the barge canal would cut the tidal currentstrength in the Ponce channel by a half. This current reduction would reduce butnot eliminate bank erosion in the lower reach as the wind-wave induced force willremain to be an important erosional factor.A number of remedial alternatives were given in the report. The most direct methodis to provide bank protection. The extent of the protection depends upon theextent of wind wave penetration which could be as deep as 150 m into the channelunder the present channel entrance condition. Beschreibung: Abstract of Thesis Presented to the Graduate Schoolof the University of Florida in Partial Fulfillment of theRequirements for the Degree of Master of EngineeringVIDEO MONITORING TECHNIQUES IN THECOASTAL ENVIRONMENTByThe field of coastal engineering has primarily utilized traditional measurementtechniques such as boat surveys and beach profiles. Aerial photography has played amajor role in the mapping of coastlines and ocean currents. More recent technology hasprovided the ability to make field measurements with precision electronicinstrumentation, but the problem of making large-scale measurements within economicbounds remains. The video revolution and, in particular, desktop video has greatlyenhanced the ability of scientists and engineers to visualize events over greater periods oftime and larger scales than ever before. The uses of video, benefits, shortcomings, and future expectations are presentedas applicable to the field of coastal engineering. This feasibility study incorporates someapplications which have previously been explored, as well as others which result fromtwo unique video data sets that were collected between 1991 and the present.

Beschreibung: A method of predicting equilibrium scour depths around multiple pile structuresbased on pre-scoured bottom shear stress was developed in this study. It washypothesized that a relationship exists between the pre-scoured bottom shear stress andthe equilibrium scour depth. A series of hydrodynamic tests were conducted in whichnear-bottom flow measurements were made in the vicinity of a variety of multiple pilestructures. The distribution of bottom shear stress was estimated from these flowmeasurements. Scour tests were then made in the same flume using the same structures.A simple relationship between the equilibrium scour depth and the pre-scoured bottomshear stress was formulated and the data from the two sets of experiments were used tocalibrate and test the formulation. The formulation gives reasonable predictions for therange of conditions tested. The approach appears promising as an alternative way of estimating equilibrium local scour depths for complex multiple pile structures. Inaddition, a number of interesting and useful findings were made regarding the rate atwhich a local scour hole forms near complex structures. (Document contains 146 pages.)

Beschreibung: This is the first of a pair of reports documenting the effects of storms on barrier island systems. The present report (Volume 1) investigates storm effects on natural island conditions whereasVolume 2 addresses the effects of seawalls. With the aim of simulating the effects of overwashon barrier islands and characterizing their response, a series of nine experiments was conductedat the Coastal Engineering Laboratory of the University of Florida. The barrier island wassimulated by a 400 feet wide (prototype units) horizontal crest and an initially planar (1:19)beach. The effects of various storm surge levels and accompanying overtopping were investigated.Experiments were conducted with both regular and irregular storm waves. Regularwaves without overtopping caused the formation of a substantial berm in the swash zone and aprominent longshore bar offshore. Increasing degrees of overtopping resulted in substantial lossof sand from the barrier island system. The longshore bar was considerably more subtle for thehighest water level tested (11.5 ft. above mean sea level). Simulation of a storm-surge hydrographwith rising and falling water levels indicated that the presence of the bar tends to occuronly during a relatively steady or slowly changing water level. The experiments with irregularwaves were conducted with reasonably similar wave heights and carrier periods as those withregular waves. The major difference was in the characteristics of the longshore bar response. Incomparison with cases with regular waves, the bar was less distinct without overtopping, subtlewith minimal overtopping and absent in cases with substantial overtopping. These experimentsseem to indicate that offshore bars are simply break-point bars which require a fairly steadybreak-point and undertow (return of mass transport) for optimal formation. Beschreibung: This report presents results of the experiments of the existing inlet and eightstructural alternatives to the Sebastian Inlet from a movable bed model. It is intendedto find solutions for improvement of boating safety and protection of beaches adjacentto the inlet. Based upon the experimental results from here and the fixed bed modelstudy, which is summarized in Part I report, an optimum structural modification planwas then recommended providing a general frame of improvement scheme. The research in this report was authorized by the Sebastian Inlet District Commissionof September 15, 1989. The University of Florida was notified to proceedon November 14, 1989. The study and report were prepared by the Department ofCoastal and Oceanographic Engineering, University of Florida. Coastal TechnologyCorporation was the technical monitor representing the Sebastian Inlet District. (Document has 109 pages.)

Beschreibung: This thesis examines the historical shoreline response to inlet modifications and sealevel rise. Inlet modifications are considered to be the geographic stabilization and training(through the use of structures) of natural inlets and the creation and further modification ofartificial inlets. Shoreline response to natural and artificial processes must be understood inorder to predict the performance of the coastline. The tendency for creating and modifyinginlets increases as industry and population growth demands. Sea level rise is a natural processwhich cannot be controlled at this time. Current theoretical approaches to predictingshoreline response indicate that sea level rise and inlet modifications can cause substantialshoreline impact. Florida, with roughly a century of shoreline position and relative sea leveldata, provides a basis for examining past trends and comparing them with theory. The shoreline of Florida was found to be accreting with the greatest accretion alongthe east coast. Shoreline responses within the boundaries of the erosional influence of inletsdue to their creation and/or modification were examined for 19 inlets around the coast ofFlorida. The differences in the shoreline response before and after the initial modification ofeach inlet show the erosional strain that inlets apply on the nearby shoreline. The effect onshoreline response due to the human intervention (unnatural processes) of modifying inletswas isolated and examined. The shoreline response due to this "human intervention" was erosional, thereby showing the negative impact that modified inlets have on shorelines. Thisinduced erosion is responsible for the loss of roughly 21.6 million cubic yards of sand from theshoreline that is within the erosional influence of Florida's east coast inlets. Combining theshoreline changes due only to natural processes with sea level rise data allows for comparisonwith the commonly accepted Bruun Rule for shoreline response as a result of a changingsea level. This comparison and the effects of including a lag time between a rise in sea leveland a change in shoreline along the east coast of Florida during the last century show noagreement with the Bruun Rule and no correlation with a specific lag time. Beschreibung: This is the second of a pair of reports documenting the effects of storms on beach systemsincluding the presence of seawalls. With the aim of simulating the effects of overwash onbarrier islands with seawalls and characterizing their response, a series of eight experimentswas conducted at the Coastal Engineering Laboratory of the University of Florida. The barrierisland was simulated by a 400 feet wide horizontal crest and an initially uniform mildly-sloped(1:19) beach. The effects of positioning the seawall at two different locations as well as the effectsof various storm surge levels and accompanying overtopping were investigated. Experimentswere conducted with both regular and irregular storm waves. With the seawall located at theslope break between the crest and the sloping beach of the barrier island, and the crest of theseawall just submerged in sand, the effects on the sediment transport process were found to beminimal. For the same position of the seawall but with the crest of the seawall raised above thesurrounding ground level, overtopping caused washover of sand indicating substantial transportin suspension. Increased levels of overtopping tended to accentuate bed profile changes butsupress bar formation (as did irregular waves). Positioning the seawall at the Mean Sea Levelshoreline caused significant scour both immediately landward as well as immediately seawardof the seawall. A prominent scour trough developed further seaward. The longshore bar washighly three-dimensional. It appears that seawalls need to be located adequately landward of theshoreline to discharge their function effectively without adverse effect to the beach. In addition, concerns for safety warrant the presence of an adequate buffer-zone between the seawall andthe upland property. (61 pp.)

Beschreibung: Current plant canopy wind flow models require three aerodynamic parametersto predict the effects of wind on sand transport--the plant drag coefficient, Cd, the leafarea density profile, LAD, and the turbulent eddy transfer coefficient, 6,. The LADand Cd characterize the plant canopy and its effects on air flow and, prior to thisstudy, data on these parameters for dune vegetation did not exist. The purpose of thisstudy was to design and test a methodology for measuring the wind drag coefficient ofcoastal dune plants. The objectives were 1) to measure and record the parametersneeded to calculate Cd, namely, the force, relative velocity and air temperature; 2) tomeasure the leaf area density of sea-oats; 3) to validate the method by measuring thequantities needed to compute the drag coefficient for a right circular data exists; and 4) to explore the Reynolds number dependence of the canopy dragcoefficient.
