Description: The organisation of the territory is the outcome of strategies of varying scope, in which a number of agents interact to shape out the areas of operation. The Liguria reality is probed here through four different situations - separated in chronological terms but sharing the poor visibility and limited efficacy of the fortified settlements. These focus on Genoa, both in the definition of its hinterland between the tenth and the eleventh centuries, and in establishing the bulwarks of coastal territorial expansion in the twelfth; the powerful groups of feudal lords who remoulded the rural settlement layout in the thirteenth century; finally, a village of the hinterland explored right through to the modern age.

Description: "Tristan Corbière is a poet who tests language to the limits, dislocating normal syntax, revelling in self-contradictory affirmations, and piling up puns. Born in Brittany in 1845, he died at only 29, leaving to future readers a scattered assortment of texts. This collection brings together several less well-known pieces, some early versions of published poems, and others which were handwritten into his own copy of his only published collection, Les Amours jaunes. Presented as a bilingual edition, this volume offers the first English translations of many of these writings, all of which testify to Corbière’s sly humour, linguistic glee, formal innovation and mordant self-irony. Playful and comic, Corbière’s work is also experimental, subversive and moving. The texts are translated by Christopher Pilling, an award-winning poet, playwright and translator. He is a founder of the Cumbrian Poets workshops, which he has hosted for 35 years, a convenor of Skiddaw u3a, and the organiser of translation days and readings in Keswick. He has translated the work of a number of poets, mainly from French but also from Latin. A beneficiary of the Royal Literary Fund, Christopher is also a member of Parkinson’s UK. Oysters, nightingales and cooking pots provides a fitting sequel to Christopher Pilling’s translation of Tristan Corbière’s Les Amours jaunes, published as These Jaundiced Loves in 1995. The volume is edited by Richard Hibbitt and Katherine Lunn-Rockliffe. Please note that this volume is available in multiple formats for your convenience. If you wish to view the French and English texts side by side to compare the original and translation, please download the free PDF file of the volume and select two-page view or purchase a printed copy. Description: Town planning entails the complex task of studying the habitat in its variegated aspects, with the objective of introducing functional transformations in response to the demands of the community. Since it is an experimental discipline, however, methods of approach and elaboration can be very different. This book represents the synthesis of the degree theses produced in the Department of Town and Territorial Planning of the University of Florence between 2000 and 2004, selected with a view to achieving a significant overview of the various issues and disciplinary areas. The volume thus addresses topical questions such as the protection of the historic identity, the rethinking of the modern city, obsolete areas and urban gaps, relational processes and spaces, sustainable development and planning, and the settlements of developing countries.

Description: This book is a collection of the proceedings of the study seminar held in Verona on 14 November 2003. This was the occasion for the presentation of the results of archive research performed by young researchers on the Jewish presence in numerous cities and smaller towns of the Venetian hinterland in the fifteenth century (Vicenza, Verona, Treviso, Feltre, and the minor centres of the Polesine and Verona and Vicenza territory). The various themes that are developed though attentive and documented analysis include: the autonomous initiative of the civic communities in the relation with the Jewish moneylenders and the attitude of Venice, divided between protection and the anti-Jewish tensions that were widespread among the lagoon nobility; the encounter and dialectic between the Ashkenazi and Italian components in the communities settled within the cities and hamlets of Veneto; the difference of the social and cultural climate between the first and second half of the fifteenth century, marked by incisive Franciscan preaching and attempts at expulsion from the cities; a look 'from the inside' which opens up the role of women in the economic life of the Jewish communities. Over twenty years after the convention on 'The Jews and Venice' promoted by the Fondazione Cini, these contributions illustrate the revival of study and the ever-present need for comparison and exchange on the issue of the Jewish presence in Italy.

Description: The contributions collected in this volume are the result of the seminars organized by the Laboratory of Modern History during its ten-year activity (from 2003 to 2013) within the Department of Historical and Geographical Studies (now called SAGAS Department) of the University of Florence. Thanks to the participation of Italian and international colleagues, as well as young scholars, this annual cycle of seminars, entitled 〈i〉Temi e problemi della storia moderna〈/i〉 (“Themes and problems of Modern History”), aims at encouraging the scientific community to discuss and reflect critically on topics of great historical importance. The theme of otherness is central in the Modern Age as well as in in the contemporary world, and it has been the subject of several seminars. The essays reconstruct significant moments and aspects of the relationships with “the other” in modern Europe: political models and cultural paradigms, cities of refuge and institutes of conversion, attitudes showing integration and/or exclusion of the Jews, Muslims, heretics and foreigners have been analysed in the volume according to the Laboratory’s 'pluralistic spirit’.

Description: Between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, the elites (secular and ecclesiastical) of the many villages, castles, smaller urban centres that make the Italian landscape so unique, started to deeply rethink the past of their “small homeland”. Roman (but also pre-Roman) heritage and medieval tradition are at the centre of interest; bold “inventions” and manipulations alternate with searches for a solid erudite structure. The essays published here concern the Italian regions of Piedmont, Romagna, Emilia, Tuscany, Marche, Umbria, Terra di Bari, Campania. In the essays, a strong sense of identity and a robust self-awareness emerges; ultimately, this is the vitality of a connective tissue of settlements featuring an “original character” relevant in the Italian historical events from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Description: Exploited for requirements of defence, navigation, transport, irrigation, and the powering of mills, water has progressively diminished in importance to the extent that the relations between the city, the territory and the water systems have now greatly deteriorated. This book proposes to retrace the nature of the relations between water and the urban landscape, interpreting the shifting of the relations through images. It also analyses the use of water in contemporary landscape design, identifying the conceptual and compositional tools proper to landscape design which can inform and guide future planning.

Description: In the current socio-cultural scenario, the implementation of the university reform aimed at boosting third-level education calls for meditation within the discipline of Architectural Technology (ICAR 12). This review must address the research topics and academic profiles of PhD courses in the Technological Area, also in terms of fostering actions consistent with European strategic lines for the promotion of a knowledge society. Research, innovation, creativity and design are the keywords of this scenario that PhD students and lecturers must bear in mind when considering three fields of study: environmental design and landscape, building production and construction and works and services strategic for the community. This book "Research among innovation, creativity and design" develops the topics addressed during the VII OSDOTTA workshop (the network of PhD courses in the field of Architectural Technology) held at the Mantua campus of Milan Polytechnic on 15th-16th-17th September 2011.

Description: Over the last few years the landscape debate has taken a new turn, shifting from concerns of conservation and protection towards the search for methods of intervention and regulations that consent a development of the territory compatible with the mutation of collective requirements. This is based on a recognition of the intrinsically dynamic nature of the landscape, conceived both in its matter and in its essence as a social construct. This shift has been sanctioned by the European Landscape Convention, which includes among the objectives of landscape policy the creation of new landscapes "to satisfy the aspirations of the population involved". This book focuses on the investigation of the conditions of the context that make innovation more or less appropriate. This is assessed as a design approach (and hence no distinction will be made between design action and planning action) that addresses the "rules" dictated by what already exists. The social recognition of their value defines the "degree of freedom" of the invention. At times the rule is the very object of the project, that is the intervention is demanded precisely to conserve or valorise a landscape that is considered of exceptional value (as in the case of protected landscapes). In other cases it is a question of implementing projects with different objectives, while respecting the rules of the landscape context. Frequently the landscape does not feature a single, unequivocal and legible system of rules, but a stratification that may be incomplete, fragmentary or conflicting: the project may then attempt to knit these up, and this mechanism may trigger its added value. There are also cases in which the rule is too weak to support a revival, or is "banal", in short can be considered worth "sacrificing" to the introduction of a new system of values. Taken as a whole, the essays explore cases of landscape design, from planning to the art of the garden, identifying the appropriateness of the innovation in terms of an awareness of the rules and the intentional affirmation and expression of self. The articles contained in the book were composed specifically for the International Convention on "Innovation and Rules in Landscape Design" held in Florence on 22 and 23 November 2002, organised by the Research Doctorate in Landscape Design of the University of Florence.

Description: Il volume presenta i risultati della ricerca condotta dall'autrice durante i tre anni del Dottorato in "Progettazione Paesistica" di Firenze.
