Description: Video-based fire detection is a crucial object detection problem that relies on accurate and reliable data to detect fires. However, collecting and labeling fire-related data can be time-consuming and expensive, making it difficult to obtain sufficient data for training machine learning models. To address this challenge, uncertainty-based active learning techniques can be used to iteratively select the most informative samples for labeling. This can reduce the amount of labeled data needed to achieve high model performance and has the potential to even prune the training data with fewer informative samples. The traditional sampling-based uncertainty estimation methods are computationally expensive. Hence, an efficient prior network-based ensemble distillation State-of-the-Art approach is evaluated on an internal dataset which still requires relatively higher overhead computation making it difficult for production deployment. A biased softmax differencing-based uncertainty approach and a feature-based hard data mining approach are proposed and compared with the distillation approach. The novel approaches are found to have a very low overhead uncertainty estimation time compared to the ensemble distillation approach and traditional sampling techniques. The methods are evaluated in the context of curating the unlabeled pool data and improving the training data. For completeness, the experiments are performed on three different data sizes, and overall, the frame-wise selection strategy is proved to be better than the sequence-wise querying strategy. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA)-based hard data mining outperformed other methods and improved the model performance by 16.33% with AUC2% metric when compared with the random selection of data. The approach even outperformed the main network trained on full data by 7.33%, henceforth improving the training data by using informative 26.39% data. The results indicate that novel data mining provides efficient training and pool data curation

Description: Poor construction quality is one of the most significant challenges for the construction industry. However, failures can be avoided or minimized by inspections based on detailed quality inspection plans as a part of quality assurance. Therefore, structured and project-specific planning of inspection plans is required to provide inspectors with the right information. Nevertheless, inspection planning is mainly manual, dependent on the individual’s experience and high level of effort. As a result, inspection planning is often neglected and limited to providing general checklists that often lack semantically rich descriptions and are unspecific concerning individual project requirements. Furthermore, proper planning of inspections requires multiple information sources, such as building design, schedules, contractual and supplier guidelines, and standards, all of which must be provided or linked via an information model. Current research lacks an adequate formalized knowledge model to provide the knowledge-driven inspection planning process with the necessary domain knowledge to support inspection planning with heterogeneous information defined in isolated systems. Therefore, this paper extends the Ontology for Construction Quality Assurance (OCQA) with the OCQA-Thermal Insulation (OCQA-TI) to formalize thermal insulation inspection planning knowledge. The OCQA offers a new linked data model that provides explicit knowledge of quality inspection planning. The development of the OCQA-TI follows the Linked Open Terms (LOT) methodology and is implemented using the Web Ontology Language (OWL). The proposed ontology is evaluated using various approaches, including automatic consistency checking, answering competency questions, and criteria-based evaluation. The results indicate that the OCQA-TI can provide inspectors with relevant inspection planning knowledge and integrate various related information streams, thus providing a more comprehensive and efficient approach to insulation inspection planning. The functionality of OCQA-TI enables the fulfillment of increased sustainability and energy efficiency requirements by providing insulation inspection knowledge

Description: The article describes the history of higher education in Florence from the beginning of the twentieth century until the mid-1920s, when the ancient Institute of Higher Studies, founded in 1859, was transformed into a modern University. The development of the university institution is reconstructed through the detailed analysis of the annual reports presented by the superintendents of the Institute and making use of the unpublished documents preserved in the historical archives of the University. Particular attention is paid to the evolution of the number of enrolled students and graduates, as well as to the expansion of the training offer made possible by the opening of new faculties and new laboratories. Finally, the article focuses on some important professors, such as the physicist Antonio Garbasso who was also mayor of Florence, and the historian Gaetano Salvemini who was one of the leaders of the anti-fascist movement and, due to his political positions, in 1925 he was forced to leave the University to emigrate to the United States.

Description: Hugo von Hofmannsthal's Elektra constitutes an important turning point in the transition from early lyric to theatre. Inspired by Sophocles' drama, but with elements more similar to Euripides', it proposes a linguistic connotation, characterisation of the characters and a completely innovative and unconventional staging. Blood, a concrete representation of the unprecedented violence that characterises the entire drama, is the red thread that links the succession of events. Words turn into weapons and the protagonist's thirst for vengeance drives the action. The finale culminates in a supreme act of violence that sees the roles reversed: the executioners become victims and the victims executioners. This is the only solution to end the circle of brutal suffering.

Description: 1938 is the year in which racial laws were implemented in Italy. Even in areas with low Jewish presence, such as Sesto Fiorentino, the obligation to register, identify and supervise the few resident Jews was imposed. The chapters of this volume reconstruct the reflections and the consequences of this legislation. Through an investigation starting from the archives of Sesto Fiorentino, and then enriched with other sources, various aspects are explored: the census lists, the presence and surveillance of foreign Jews, the free internment, the application of the laws at school and in the Biblioteca Circolante. Unpublished material reconstructs the precepting of Jews from the Florentine area to work and on the fate of those who, after 1943, found themselves in Sesto Fiorentino.

Description: Contact with Western civilisation generated an enormous amount of translation of Western writings in Japan in the second half of the 19th century. Society and culture of modern Japan were built on this great undertaking, but discrepancies between the source and target languages can create complex entanglements. It is certainly fascinating to pay attention to the very entanglements created in the process of moving from the original language to the language of translation. From this point of view, one of the most interesting examples, the subject of this essay, is the term res publica/republic and its Japanese translation kyōwa, due to their linguistic distances and intersections.

Description: The term «moral science» was used in universities and academies prior to the emergence of the expression «humanities and social sciences». However, its connection with the modern eastern Asian context has not yet been sufficiently investigated. This paper tries to fill the gap with a case study on its import and appropriation by late nineteenth-century Japan to its socio-cultural sphere, having lacked the framework of classifying the sciences into «moral» and «physical» ones. The study achieves this by examining the activities of Meirokusha, a learned society created in 1773 to promote Western studies, and the writings of one of its leading members, Yukichi Fukuzawa, who tried to understand Francis Wayland’s Elements of Moral Science (1835), a famous American textbook in his time.

Description: This contribution intends to propose a reflection on the theatrical production of the Angolan Artur Carlos Pestana dos Santos, better known as Pepetela, an author who has always combined his literary vocation with his political commitment in the struggle for liberation from Portuguese colonialism (pepetela, meaning 'eyelash' in the Kimbundu language, originated as a militant battle name in the ranks of the MPLA). Pepetela, who has more than 20 novels and short stories to his credit, has only forayed into dramaturgy on two occasions, in the late 1970s, with the publication of A corda (written in 1976 and published in 1978) and A revolta da casa dos ídolos (written in 1979 and published in 1980). Both pièces are set in the socio-political context of the post-independence period and - both directly and allegorically, in dialogue with Brecht's epic theatre, but also with Augusto Boal's Teatro do oprimido - stage old and new conflicts between the dominators and the dominated.

Description: Symbols are a universal way to convey complex information in technical drawings since they can represent a wide range of elements, including components, materials, or relationships, in a concise and space-saving manner. Therefore, to enable a digital and automatic interpretation of pixel-based drawings, accurate detection of symbols is a crucial step. To enhance the efficiency of the digitization process, current research focuses on automating this symbol detection using deep learning models. However, the ever-increasing repertoire of model architectures poses a challenge for researchers and practitioners alike in retaining an overview of the latest advancements and selecting the most suitable model architecture for their respective use cases. To provide guidance, this contribution conducts a comparative study of prevalent and state-of-the-art model architectures for the task of symbol detection in pixel-based construction drawings. Therefore, this study evaluates six different object detection model architectures, including YOLOv5, YOLOv7, YOLOv8, Swin-Transformer, ConvNeXt, and Faster-RCNN. These models are trained and tested on two distinct datasets from the bridge and residential building domains, both representing substantial sub-sectors of the construction industry. Furthermore, the models are evaluated based on five criteria, i.e., detection accuracy, robustness to data scarcity, training time, inference time, and model size. In summary, our comparative study highlights the performance and capabilities of different deep learning models for symbol detection in construction drawings. Through the comprehensive evaluation and practical insights, this research facilitates the advancement of automated symbol detection by showing the strengths and weaknesses of the model architectures, thus providing users with valuable guidance in choosing the most appropriate model for their real-world applications

Description: According to the Ministry of Manpower, falling and slipping accidents are one of the most common accidents in addition, falls from heights (FFH), including accidents during scaffolding work, are still a major cause of death in the construction industry. Regular safety checks are currently being carried out on construction sites, but scaffold-related accidents continue to occur. Sensing technology is being attempted in many industrial sites for safety monitoring, but there are still limitations in terms of the cost of sensors and object detection, which are limited to certain risks. Therefore, this paper proposes a deep learning-based pose estimation approach to identify the risk of falling during scaffolding work in the construction industry. Through analysis of the correlation between unstable behavior during scaffold work and the angle of keypoints of workers, the proposed approach demonstrates the ability to detect the risk of falling. The proposed approach can prevent falling accidents not only by detecting construction site workers, but also by detecting specific risky behaviors. In addition, in limited work environments other than scaffolding work, the information on unstable behavior can be provided to safety managers who may not be aware of the risk, thus contributing to preventing falling accidents

Description: Safety management in construction sites has always been one of the most sensitive aspects of the AECO industry and a problematic that recalls the complexity of such a multifactor domain. The high number of work accidents that occur on construction sites is also caused by the fact that not all the information to work safely is always available. For instance, visibility during some maneuvers is a key aspect of safety in operations, and this is often impeded due to the layout of the construction site and working methods, especially in the use of some equipment. The latest approaches in order to overcome complex situations is represented by the Digital Twin paradigm. This approach has among its main criticisms:1) the way of connecting physical reality and its digital replica and 2) the system for exploiting the combination of real-time data and digital applied intelligence for supporting operations on site. This paper proposes a framework for the development of digital twin of the construction site. An application of augmented reality that exploits the concept of diminished reality and workers location detection will improve visibility during critical operations

Description: The automation and innovation have impacted Architecture, Engineering and Construction Industry, particularly when transitioning from traditional or conventional methods of construction to modular or Industrialized Building System (IBS). Thus, to ameliorate the processes surrounding built environment, researchers have been interested in the BIM’s integration into construction industry. To ensure BIM’s adoption and integration into construction supply chain, supply chain’s management and procurement, we need to have an extensive comprehensive research base regarding global outlook of BIM’s relation with supply chain. The purpose of this study is to identify global scientific research patterns and trends related to BIM’s role in supply chain, by performing scientometric analysis. The scientometric analysis will help us analyze the work being done in this field and whether a significant literature exists that supports or helps in adoption of this idea. Most of the already existing research on BIM is performed on various other aspects of BIM like infrastructure sustainability, green buildings, design, framework, management of facilities and other BIM related managerial aspects. Thus, it is highly imperative to systematize and analyze the existing global scientific literature research to identify the global trends and frontiers on current BIM’s relation with construction supply chain. Not only this would pave the way towards identification of current relevant literature but would also lay down the foundations for digital transformation in construction

Description: For Ágota Kristóf, theatrical and novel communication are not as clearly different as we would expect given the difference between the two literary genres. The first plays, written in French-speaking Switzerland starting from the end of the 1970s, contain those motifs that would later build the imaginative system of the most famous novels. Violence, latent or manifest, dominates all sentimentality and outlines, in its precise contours of abuse of the body, what will be the constant controversy in all of the writer's activity in the theatre, in the novel, in poetry. In the features of violence we see a detached testimony of social relationships, that accumulation of frustrations that causes individual events to transform into episodes of a broader human story.

Description: Moscow at the turn of history. About the “toponymic upheaval” and not only. The article digs into the urban (and political) geography of Moscow and how this is perceived in Italy in the aftermath of the collapse of the Soviet Union. In particular, the investigation will focus on a number of volumes related to the late Soviet era that were published in Italy between the late 1980s and the mid-1990s. The authors are mainly newspaper and TV correspondents: Vittorio Zucconi (1944-2019, Il Corriere della sera, Si fa presto a dire Russia); Demetrio Volcic (1931-2021, RAI, Mosca. I giorni della fine); Enrico Franceschini (1956, La Repubblica) who is both a journalist (La fine dell'impero. Ultimo viaggio in URSS) and a novelist (La donna della Piazza Rossa). However, the texts index also includes a politician, Giulio Andreotti (L’URSS vista da vicino. Dalla guerra fredda a Gorbaciov), and a comic character, Mickey Mouse, who, in an October 1988 issue number, shows how in the years of perestroika people looked at the nascent (dying) country with both fear and curiosity. All the authors, regardless of their profession and orientation, have the feeling that they are also witnessing history through urban geography; it is no coincidence that all the texts analyzed, to varying extents, “photograph” buildings, streets, monuments... that is to say , “places,” which may be “old,” i.e. inherited from previous travelers or the result of historical, political or literary reminiscences, or “new” places, where a new path of history is being written.

Description: Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) investing has become increasingly significant in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry. However, the AEC industry faces challenges such as non-uniform standards, complex information sources, and data security concerns when collecting and verifying ESG data. At the same time, as one of the key points of carbon emission in AEC projects, the ESG management of construction projects is still lacking. This paper proposed a blockchain-based ESG data management framework, which designed to address these challenges in the AEC industry. The framework and the smart contract and transaction data model applied in it realize data collection and information verification in construction projects. By leveraging blockchain technology's key features of transparency, immutability, and traceability, the framework ensures secure and efficient ESG data management. Additionally, the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) technology enables access to original files for data verification and comparison, further enhancing authenticity. By integrating blockchain and IPFS technologies, our proposed solution enhances the reliability and traceability of ESG data in the construction projects, paving the way for more sustainable and transparent practices

Description: The rapid progress of artificial intelligence (AI) has prompted the exploration of its potential applications in the construction industry, although at a slower rate. Since the starting point of a design is the analysis of the site’s constraints, the purpose of the ongoing research is the application of artificial intelligence in risk assessment for site areas. The primary objective of this research project is to develop an interactive map that employs AI to identify potential surface and aerial interferences. This map aims to support planners, engineers, and architects during the site context analysis phase by providing real-time visualization of obstacles. The interactive map allows users to explore and analyze identified obstacles, enabling cluster markers and filtering of features. The results obtained from applying this approach in Milan, Italy, demonstrate its functionality and usability, highlighting the tool's ability to provide valuable information in both localized and citywide scenarios. Potential improvements such as size assessment and advanced marker generation are also being examined to enhance the management of surface and air interferences. The goal is to enhance the tool's functionality, accuracy, and planning efficiency in construction projects

Description: The article analyses the morphological means used by the Slovenian dialects of Friuli in adapting loan verbs to their aspectual system in comparison to the traditional means of expressing verbal aspect in the indigenous Slavic lexicon. In relation to verbs of Slavic origin, the formation of aspectual pairs was mainly realised by means of prefixation to the base verb (thereby perfectivising it), whereas with loans from the adjacent Romance varieties (Friulian, Italian, Venetian) suffixation proves more productive (yielding imperfectivisation). The analysis is carried out on the dialect of Resia as well as those from the Torre and Natisone Valleys. Despite some differences, in all three dialects there is generally a strong tendency to integrate loan verbs into the aspectual systems of these varieties. Biaspectual verbs, on the other hand, are relatively rare except for the particular case of the verbs in -inat in Resian.

Description: The PN Kammalia-Tarawa in an Old Assyrian tablet seems to be the earliest reference of the deity Darawa. The Luwian background this deity is also apparent, e.g., from the plural form DDa-ra-ú-wa-an-zi or from those texts mentioned in CTH 457 and the etymological interpretation of the divine name to the Luwian verb tarāwi(ya)-. Since the early Middle Hittite period Darawa also found her way into the Hattian milieu and as a goddess connected with the family life, she is mentioned several times in festivals for a queen (CTH 646), but also in the Hittite Prayer to the Sun-goddess of the Netherworld (CTH 371) which is – in my opinion – the only Hittite texts mentioning Darawa within the “pantheon of the state”. Texts from the Hurrian and Kizzuwatnaean milieu (e.g., CTH 351) also refer several times to Darawa, but this is clearly the result of a secondary and marginal dissemination of the goddess. In conclusion one might say that Darawa from her Luwian background also came into contact with various milieus of the “Hittite pantheon”, functioning as a goddess providing good (and evil) to humans in everyday life.

Description: Europe, as the title of this collective book indicates, is a project under construction and David Sassoli, who is honored here, one of its most striking and memorable builders. European construction, despite all the deviations and hesitations that distinguish every single genuine human situation, has been based on a set of values that represent our own identity, in the full recognition of all the differences that simultaneously nourish it. Culture has progressively played a major role in this lasting European undertaking. In this chapter, by honoring a man who hoped for a better spiritual condition for Europe, we reassess one of the main instruments for establishing a cultural path in Europe: the European Capital of Culture (ECOC) project. The record and the tone of the following pages is far beyond the usual scope of mere description. Guided by the inspiring example of Sassoli, we face up to suggest a set of measures that will allow the ECOC action to fully meet its purpose, thus contributing to make the cultural option in Europe truly irreversible.

Description: Nowadays poverty can be defined as a construct that can no longer be ascribed to the material scarcity of resources but to the lack of all available relational, social and cultural resources, that are an expression of a “suffering” territory. This fragility testifies to a problem of educational sustainability that requires an exit from the emergency logic of “buffer interventions” by activating social, training and professional networks, capable of responding to the educational needs expressed by the territory. For this reason, in the epistemic framework of Civil and Digital-Civil Pedagogy, the need emerges for new professional profiles capable of being “managers” of integrated territorial development, educators-planners of territorial educational services with a view to social sustainability and the educational human transition.

Description: Eco-territorialist approach to spatial planning overcomes functional approaches assuming as key references man/nature co-evolution, the diverse components of living, the participation of inhabitants to territorial governance, the territorial context not as the object of planning choices but as a real living subject. The territorial context, a both existing and potential heritage for the settled community, is considered as a fundamental 'actant' in the ecological transition process. The reference to some important contributions for the ongoing redefinition of the theoretical methodological statute of the discipline substantiates the challenge of this alternative approach to planning.

Description: Peripheries are processes and places in which conditions and actors constantly shift. The contingent forms of peripheries in this book are assembled around embodied identities and are rooted in specific genealogies: peripheries as urban fringes, periphery countries in the modern world-system theory, and peripheral urbanization. Through these genealogies, the heterogeneous forms of peripheries acquire layered meanings that decenter urban theory. Since no form can exist outside historical relations of power, it is critical to apply methodological approaches that can address the political agency emerging from embodied identities.

His deep and strong love for life expands to the way he fraternises, speaks or acts, with a relentless lucidity and moral demand. It is this attitude, this way of exercising citizenship and doing politics, that is recognisably unique and fascinating in him. The project, a surprising demonstration of his perfect knowledge of places where he lived, is illustrated in three drawings found and studied by Renzo Cianchi. Today, it is particularly interesting to analyze the feasibility of Leonardo’s project, by chronologically translating it to the 21st century, namely in 2020. Based on an accurate hydrologic analysis, this paper aims at providing further insights on Leonardo’s study, focusing on the feasibility of the dam.

Description: The separative logic is not educational. The essay reviews the historical events that have generated an undervaluation of vocational training pathways compared to education pathways. This "minority" of perception and legislation stems from a logic of separation with many faces which, taken all together, with etiological spirit and historical-ordinamental contextualization, explain the "untenable" inferiority of vocational education: people (the 'inferiors') and political-bureaucratic elite (the 'superiors'), nature and culture, man and citizen, etc. These separations concerned the idea of labor (one among them, the opposition between 'manual labor' and 'intellectual labor') and did not allow for increasing the educational power of it. Only a logic of integration (embedded and embodied) can defuse the ideas of separation and provide an organic and holistic image of education.

Description: The aim of this chapter is to point out the connection between mobility and cultural activities of Chinese returnee opera students. Many Chinese students in Italy attend cultural and artistic university courses. They may be considered significant in analyzing Chinese reverse migration from Italy. The examined connection involves several dynamics, including artistic aspects, historical reasons, social and economic changes, public policies and consumerism styles. Mobility and cultural production may be analyzed through both a structural and imaginative dimension. The structural dimension is composed of international agreements, global mobility law conditions, social and economic changes, and private investments in education to accumulate cultural capital that produce (or reproduce) certain social structures and experiences. On the other hand, the imaginative dimension is shaped by the lifestyle adopted by middle class families, including their work activities and cultural consumption. Returnee students are both the subjects who promote this process and the object of this dynamic. Chinese singers of Italian opera, upon graduating university in Italy, join the possibilities of the work field—in Bourdieu’s perspective—which is formed by the two aforementioned dimensions. Finally, perceived differences between Italy and China in terms of musical technique and culture are reworked according to contemporary cultural policies.

In the evolutions and involutions of such scenario up to the recent pandemic and the Russian-Ukrainian war, the advocates of eco-territorialism find reasons to challenge the unlimited urbanisation of space; to frame the question of dwelling as an unavoidable ethical-political problem; to overcome the reductionism of those who read the ecological crisis as a mere climate change or energy issue; to problematise and radically redefine the ideas of development and planning, reconnecting them to the self-sustainable reconstruction of material and immaterial relations between the inhabitants and the anthropic, ecosystem and bioregional complexity of places.

Description: This chapter focuses on Obrazy Italii, the best known work by Pavel Muratov, a Russian writer, journalist, critic and art historian. This work is a diary recounting the journey to Italy of the author at the beginning of the twentieth century; nowadays it is considered a classic text that provides a testimony on the way Italian art was perceived in Russia. Though it is well-known in Russia, this work has only recently received some attention in Italy following its recent translation. This chapter contains detailed and original analyses that compare Muratov’s translations with those found in Russian dictionaries written in the same period. These concern a selection of lemmas in art and architecture and the names of artists. This chapter shows that the language employed in this work cannot be defined as either specialised or standard, but as a mixture between the two.

Description: Sexual harassment is a complex behaviour, characterized by several dimensions and definitions, as shown by the literature. In an online context, it is important to fully understand its nature, characteristics and consequences as well as how it may affect adolescents. This work aims to systematize the information available in the literature, by describing the main characteristics of the phenomenon, and trying to provide a definition. The research, which was conducted on four databases in November 2021, led to the identification of 20958 works. After removing the duplicates, and analyzing the abstracts and full-texts, a final number of 65 works were included, which were read in full-text and analysed. As for the studies collected, the type of relationship between the aggressor and the victim is described, alongside a description of the behaviors classified as online sexual harassment. Online sexual harassment can manifest itself in three main typologies (verbal, visual, cybersexual). Within these typologies, it is possible to identify three prevalent behaviours: unwanted solicitation, non-consensual sexting, and sharing of intimate and/or private content with third parties without the victim’s consent.

Description: In recent years, Chinese students have enjoyed a prominent presence in the Italian higher education system. A recent survey conducted by Uni-Italia shows that Chinese students account for 24% of non-EU students in Italian universities. When the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) erupted in Italy at the beginning of 2020, panic spread quickly through social media; numerous fears, generated by the tide of information available online, permeated the Chinese university student community in Italy. This chapter first analyses the problems encountered by Chinese university students in Italy during the COVID-19 pandemic, and then introduces the artistic and cultural response from within that same community. Such forms of creative response also shine light, more generally, on a growing Anti-Asian sentiment in Italy. Despite the enormous challenges posed by COVID-19, Chinese university students in Italy have developed a mode of communication that builds bridges between different cultures— quite different from “mass media” or “major news outlets”—because it is personal, honest, and intimate.

Description: Although Boccaccio’s name is rarely encountered in published works of Giovanni Pascoli (1855-1912), traces of a constant reading and reuse of the Decameron have emerged and continue to emerge from the poet’s manuscripts. The article outlines the history of the already known contacts between the two authors and adds a new document: the unknown verse drama ‘Messer Gentile’, inspired by the novella X 4. This drama, designed as a one-act play with a prologue and three scenes, has been left unfinished: only the prologue and the first scene are preserved, but it is enough to appreciate some dynamics that characterize the rewriting process. A dense network of references to the most ancient Italian poetic tradition emerges from the dramatic lines, and among the manuscripts one discovers an experimental rhythmic prose composed of hendecasyllables arranged in a line that the study reconnects to the reform of modern tragic theater envisaged by Pascoli.

Description: This paper aims to demonstrate that cults and cultic institutions are a crucial element for understanding the processes producing different regional outcomes after the fall of the Hittite empire. In this paper, cults are understood as normative cosmic forces defining tempo and worldview of ancient societies. Cultic institutions can be identified as physical spaces defined by purity, charged with real and symbolic value, and led by specialists whose competence is recognised by the community. Instead of being a by-product of political complexity, they are a driving force behind the power dynamics because they are perceived as such in a bottom-up perspective, but also often by main political actors in search of legitimation of their power. This paper examines the interconnections between cultic and political institutions in the territory under the Hittite empire and in the same space after the empire’s demise. We aim to distinguish between processes of resilience, reorganisation, and transformation as they occurred in particular micro-regions previously controlled by the empire, including the Upper Euphrates, South-Central Anatolia, North-Central Anatolia, Cilicia, and the Northern Levant; this will demonstrate both the importance of such a micro-regionally defined study, as well as the shared coincidence of cultic and political institutional change. It will become evident that cultic continuity coincided with the resilience of political institutions, and changes in the cultic landscape corresponded to political reorganisations or transformations in post-Hittite Anatolia and north Syria.

Description: One of the initiatives on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Dante’s death, carried out in Bulgaria in October 2021, consisted in the publication of a monographic issue of the weekly Literaturen vestnik in a bilingual version with the title “Ancora attuale, sempre divino: Literaturen vestnik celebra Dante.” Among the thematic features contained in this issue, an important place is occupied by three surveys conducted among Bulgarian secondary school teachers, university lecturers and poets. The surveys aim to outline how Dante’s work is currently perceived and to comment on the fact that – unbeknownst to most people – the Divina Commedia has been excluded from the literature curricula since the 2018-19 academic year.

After presenting the two projects connected with the LBC corpus (UniCittà 2019-2021 and UniVOCittà – ongoing), Zotti presents the BER sub-corpus from a quantitative and qualitative point of view reflecting on its role ans its complementarity for the description of the artistic terminology in the LBC comparable monolingual corpus. Zotti concludes by showcasing the applications and results of the corpus-driven approach and its potential for inferring linguistic knowledge when it comes to (diastratic and diatopic) synonymy, suggesting new strategies for the translation of cultural-specific items.

Description: This paper focuses on the anabasis and katabasis narratives inspired by Dante in the works of the most representative Polish romantics: Adam Mickiewicz (1798-1855), Juliusz Słowacki (1809-1849), Zygmunt Krasiński (1812-1859) and Cyprian Kamil Norwid (1821-1883). It was the Divina Commedia which exercised the greatest influence on the poets, especially Inferno, which became a forerunner of the Polish reality itself. But whereas Dante’s Inferno is identified with the underworld, the Polish Romantics’ locus horridus coincides with the actual world. If the Dantesque journey is a katabasis to the underworld, the descent portrayed by Polish poets is an anabasis towards a volcano crater covered with lava and ice. Moreover, according to the martyrological view, the Polish reality in those days was not only a place of suffering and tribulation, but also of expiation, which was a preparation for the arrival of paradise on Earth.

Description: This study deals with aspectuality in Resian, a Slovene-based variety of north-eastern Italy, and the probable role of Romance influence on developments in this domain. In part, these findings are compared with the situation found with other non-Romance linguistic varieties spoken in Italy, especially Molise Slavic. The functional-semantic field of aspectuality is considered both in relation to its grammatical centre, viz. verbal aspect, and its lexical periphery. Language contact plays an important role in the almost complete transition of the Resian dual aspect system to a purely derivational opposition “imperfective : perfective”, also absorbing most of its prior morphosyntactic opposition “imperfect : aorist : perfect”. Furthermore, the special aspectual selection properties of phasal verbs and the role of aspect in the functions of modal verbs merit particular mention in this respect. In the case of lexical and periphrastic means of expression, a number of calqued progressive and prospective (imminent) periphrases, mostly calqued from Romance models, are discussed.

Description: This study, through the use of hundreds of archival documents over a period of about two centuries, highlights the total reversal in the silk trade that occurred from the beginning of the 15th century: silk cloth no longer crossed the Mediterranean from East to West, as in previous centuries, but from West to East. Jewish, Turkish and Syrians merchants, and above all the Sublime Porte showed continued appreciation for Florentine silks. Through the analysis of the sources, every phase of such export is described in detail: the purchase of the cloths in Florence, their shipment, transport and finally the sale through Florentine correspondents in Constantinople. This flow of silks continued until the first decades of the 16th century, only to decline rapidly around the middle of the century.

Description: Paradoxality as a Specific Feature of Dostoevsky’s Literary Works. Techniques, Stylistics, Mechanisms of Action. All works by Dostoevsky reveal the presence of paradox. These paradoxes act according to mechanisms that depend either on the fictional (polyphonic) or nonfictional (monologic) text “dominant.” Taking as a starting point (a) the arguments of G.S. Morson, according to whom paradoxes “seem to carry the quintessence of ‘Dostoevskyism’, particularly of his brand of humor,” (b) the analysis of Dostoevsky’s paradoxical humor; and (c) the three main categories of paradoxes (“empty or rhetorical”, “negative”, “positive”), we argue that Dostoevsky applies a fourth type of paradox, one that affects neither the premise nor the ending of the paradoxical structure, but their intrinsic logical interconnection. This article analyses a repertoire of paradoxical techniques used by Dostoevsky, focusing on the destabilizing humoristic function they enact.

Description: Ongoing study of the pottery assemblage and its surrounding context in Area 4 at the site of Alalakh has again brought to light a phenomenon that is considered typical for the Iron Age I Levant: the construction of pits/silo installations in open areas. This phenomenon has been interpreted as a sign of ruralisation or insecure economic conditions, a possible marker for the political instability in the area during the 13th-12th centuries BCE. This article examines the similarities and differences between the examples from the Iron Age I in the ‘Amuq and contemporary sites in the Levant, and also considers later similar installations from the Iron Age II. Keeping in mind the functions usually ascribed to these structures, this study also analyses the so-called ‘Anatolian’ tradition of grain storage in the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age in order to address the role of these installations in understanding possible food control strategies and their possible impact in the Levant.

Strategies discussed include using generic nouns, passive/impersonal verbs, and relative/indefinite pronouns. Inclusive language benefits are acknowledged, but complexity and reduced clarity are highlighted. The authors recommend inclusive language, including the unmarked masculine form for complex cases. Italian universities adoption of Gender Equality Plans (GEP) in response to European Commission directives is also discussed. Emphasis is placed on language attention in GEPs and collaboration with linguists for inclusivity and gender equality. Balancing language simplification with gender-inclusive objectives is recognized as a challenge.

Description: Floor 26 of Ho King Commercial Centre in Yau Ma Tei, the elevator stops. At the end of the corridor, the sound of a heavy metal band, detuned screams buffered by the cracked plywood door of a tiny music studio. Outdated factory buildings in Kwun Tong, industrial architecture gradually surrounded by new commercial and residential complexes; their precarious wait for urban renewal has offered an opportunity for young musicians to establish music studios, classrooms, or improvised bedrooms where music and teenage discoveries mingle with the noise of machinery. A rusty anonymous intercom partially hidden by some plastic ivies. Past the door, a narrow metallic staircase, source of random encounters and only access point to a one-off experience; hundreds of people—local and foreigners—gathered in a tiny dark room, a miscellany of sweat, smoke, voices, and distant music. The hidden networks formed by musicians scattered in unexpected venues around Hong Kong provide a sonic collage that reformulates some of the city’s social peripheries from within. Through emergent sub-cultures, young artists deploy a wide range of tactics to counter the commodification and politicization of creativity, and the speculation over space in order to achieve new opportunities in a “bureaucratic society of controlled consumption.” In his work on everyday life, which focuses on the resistance of (extra)ordinary people to structures of power, Michel de Certeau makes reference to the idea of “silent discoverers of their own paths in the jungle of functionalist rationality.” The main actors of this essay, despite feeding on and actively participating in Hong Kong’s consumerism dynamics by taking references from social media, e-commerce, or shopping malls, produce “wandering lines”—or wandering sounds—with their own (syn)tactics through their artistic practices. Notably, in Hong Kong’s reductionist bureaucratic system, with a strong predominance of statistics and evaluation focused on “classifying, calculating and putting into tables,” these artistic rituals and reinterpretations of the city’s culture often remain overlooked or hidden to the system.

Çatal Höyük represents a stage in which gods started to be shaped: the bull represented the Storm-god (a concept which reached the Classical period), the stag the god of the wild fauna, and female figurines symbolized the Mother-goddess. In Egypt, where gods where usually represented by animals, zoomorphism presents a continuity which ended only with the introduction of Christianity. The archaeological finds from Kaneš and the Hittite texts document an extraordinary continuity: each deity was represented by an animal, portraited in the vessel with which the celebrant (the royal couple or also a priest) reached a kind of communion with the god in drinking of the same wine and eating of the same bread.

Description: Humor and Irony as a Means of Combating Atheism in the Discourse of F.M. Dostoevsky . The question of the God’s existence troubled Dostoevsky throughout his life. He created a very convincing portrait of the atheist of his time. He did not consider unbelievers immoral, but only “infected with recklessness”, and when speaking of his atheist acquaintances, often admitted that they were good people. Dostoevsky created the image of an atheist as an intelligent person, who is guided not by the heart, but by the mind and who often evokes sympathy for his questing, his thinking, and his suffering (like Versilov or Ivan Karamazov). If we carefully consider the “atheistic” characters of Dostoevsky, however, we will see that atheism is a phenomenon associated with something both bad and funny. Through humorous details, Dostoevsky imperceptibly creates an image of the “atheist” as a comical and frivolous person.

Description: In this book, Giovanni Molteni Tagliabue asserts that the realization of the values and the implementation of the objectives as indicated in democratic constitutions (political, social rights and the people’s welfare) are hindered by structural defects of the legislative/government architecture and processes. Expertise and science have scarce say in politics and policy. The author suggests an innovative view through the ‘REDemo Project’. 1. Rationalization: the insertion of public scientists into legislative/executive mechanisms, with the creation in each democracy of a National Scientific Assembly – parallel to the extant partypolitical Chamber of Representatives – consisting of academic experts and researchers (legal scholars, political analysts, economists, sociologists, land/urban planners, industry/infrastructure designers, biotechnologists, agronomists, ecologists, educationists, specialists on public health, on cultural heritage, etc.) elected by universal suffrage; 2. Extension: the broadening of the institutions of direct democracy and reinforcement of the electorate as decision-maker of last resort. So the main themes and objectives of the book are an examination of the major flaws in today’s democracies (pars destruens) and a proposal for a renewed institutional framework (pars construens).

Description: “We laughed like from a tickle on the heart.” Dostoevsky’s Muddy Confession. When considering laughter in Dostoevsky, one immediately thinks of the long “tirade” in The Adolescent, which proposes a kind of physiology of laughter, and its unpredictable effects on the perception of those who witness it. Laughter and caustic humor color even the most intimate confessions and can serve to partially mask the difficult action of revealing oneself before others. Modernity itself is the era of self-exhibition, of a sort of widespread confession. And yet, the laughter of modernity has lost the essence of joy. Joy is a function of that almost impossible sincerity that unveils the essence of man. The grimace of the fool, who shamelessly denudes himself before others in confession, becomes a sign of the isolation of the modern self and the end of the utopia of sincerity pursued by Rousseau.

Description: The short but significant experiment of the Ostrogothic Kingdom in Italy left politically ephemeral albeit culturally surprisingly durable traces in the peninsula. Among them, epigraphy takes centre stage when discussing decrees, laws, and public documents, which are a direct expression of the rulers’ will to gain greater visibility and disseminate their voice. However, epigraphy is also crucial to knowing the names, professions, ideas, and other concepts relating to the ordinary people. This contribution aims to examine a number of issues concerning controversial Germanic names datable between the VIth and VIIth century AD, and variably assigned to Ostrogoths, Lombards, and even Carolingians characters; through the lens of these durable materials, which – ironically enough – are monuments both recording contemporary propaganda and everyday life facets, the article will also explore the graphic and epigraphic changes which occurred in Italy between the VIth-IXth centuries.

Description: The paper resumes the outcomes of the literature review conducted from the general theme regarding the city as an educational context and subject in the twenty-first century and presents a summary of the research design undertaken. The aim is to investigate the city as a ‘learning city’ where educational and training processes can become engines of regeneration. It is also intended to survey some examples of generative transformations traceable to the development trajectories drawn by Agenda 2030 that emerge in the learning city model, in order to understand their impact on the communities involved, the policies and the professional figures required to govern the processes.

Description: The book starts with an introductory exploration on how writers use computers; gives a definition of Born-digital Literary Archives, provides a few examples from the international panorama and carries out a mapping of digital archives in Italy with a particular focus on Franco Fortini’s Archive held at the University of Siena. The volume offers a summary of the first Italian project devoted to the Italian born-digital literary archives, PAD - Pavia Digital Archives, by analysing the process of acquisition and management of the materials, now kept at the Centro Manoscritti in Pavia. Finally a critical analysis of Francesco Pecoraro’s first three works is offered through an examination of his digital archive in Pavia.

Description: The volume aims to investigate Tony Blair’s political figure, seeking to identify the elements of continuity and disruption between the blairian politics, the Labour Party’s culture and history and Margaret Thatcher’s political legacy. Several aspects of the British Prime Minister are examined: his biography, his rise in the party, his political ideas, his communicative style, and the choices he made once in power, both in domestic and foreign policy, especially in his relationship with the United States and the European Union. In particular, the volume focuses on the first six years of New Labour governments: from the landslide victory in 1997 to the declaration of war on Iraq in 2003, a decisive turning point in Blair’s career and legacy.

Description: In Jerusalem, intra-urban boundaries are experienced and negotiated in deeply embodied ways, and primarily encountered, undermined, and reinforced through mobility. Palestinians’ movements are regularly restricted in areas at the geographical periphery of Jerusalem—especially those neighborhoods that have been severed from the rest of the city by the Israeli separation barrier. In expending significant energy to navigate the rules and spaces of the mobility regime, Palestinians must think of their movements from the perspective of Israeli power. This conceptual displacement of the self results in a sense of alienation, both from the spaces they cannot access and from their own capacities. Many feel stuck in both space and time and cannot envision a future for themselves in their city. Conversely, movement in spite of restrictions can also expand residents’ appreciation of their own capacity. Leisure mobilities in particular bear a radical potential because they involve the enjoyment of movement through space, rather than being merely a means to an end. As Palestinians in the city assert their claim through embodied movement, they re-appropriate hostile space with light-hearted playfulness. Mobility thus emerges as a useful vehicle for examining not only how Palestinians’ agency is constrained by the broader urban context but how their movements affect urban space: as they redraw the boundaries of spatial exclusion from the bottom up, they call into question who and what is considered peripheral to the city. The chapter traces the restriction of everyday movements, as well as the way marginalized residents navigate and defend contested urban terrain, using a phenomenological lens. By engaging Merleau-Ponty’s view of the relationship between the body-subject and the world, it argues that everyday movements shape the spatial and temporal horizon. The restriction of movement limits what is conceivable, but at the same time, the mobility of marginal urban residents in spite of those restrictions expands the sense of what is deemed possible.

Description: The research studied the effects of petroleum hydrocarbons (PHs) on Salicornia perennans Willd. at different saline concentrations. The study investigated 1) in vitro germination and 2) plants growth in hydroponics conditions. PHs, together with salinity, strongly affected the germination. Under saline conditions, PHs generally stimulated germination in terms of time and final rate. Plant growth and the photosynthetic performance were significantly affected at 0 g/l of salt and with high PHs addition. Hence, the saline conditions seem to be necessary to enable the resistance to the PHs stress.

Description: The evolution of the complex school system, from its origins to school autonomy, explains the reason for the connotation of complexity, which it has acquired over time. The school as organization and as institution therefore is a complex system where leaders and managers become a single person, identified in the School Manager who acts on the basis of continuous improvement. The characteristic features of the managerial function and of the school institution become: governance, leadership, manager, research, communication, organizational culture, and empowerment. The organizational culture understood as sharing assumptions, meanings, values and behaviors, becomes a useful means to achieve the institutional mandate, that is, to ensure student educational success.

Description: Theoretical studies on literature and the methodology of literary criticism have always been a field of high intellectual "porosity" capable of opening up to diverse and novel disciplinary stimuli and expertise. However, this capacity, which is moreover a necessary characteristic of proper research, clashes with the rigidity of the disciplinary structure of the Italian university, based on rigid taxonomies of knowledge. Overcoming this rigidity is now desirable and necessary to release the innovative potential of the so-called frontier fields of study.

Description: This article shows that particle verbs in Burgenland Croatian – a notable morphosyntactic phenomenon of language contact – may form aspectual pairs in a typically Slavic manner. Particle-based pairs with an indigenous base verb are formed by means of suffixation, suffix opposition, suppletion or prefixation. In the case of spatial relations, by contrast, preverbs predominate over prefixes, leading to a reduction of the old inventory of verbal compounds. Nevertheless, preverbs are only rarely obligatory in the formation of aspectual pairs. In the case of borrowings, only prefixation is productive, which might be attributed to German (and Hungarian) influence. On a par with other aspectual pairs, particle-based formations may express taxis relations (sequence, simultaneity, incidence). Language contact possibly contributed to the preservation of the Contextually Conditioned Imperfective Past also in imperfective particle verbs.

Description: This book, inspired by the thought of Giacomo Becattini, reflects on why local communities continue to exist and spread. Why does the planet not become one place without borders? Why instead do we humans preferentially group ourselves into communities that are neither 'too wide' nor 'too narrow'? What characterizes today's form of community? Why are these communities rooted in places? What is peculiarly 'local' about places? Together with Becattini, we answer that the foundation of local communities is social culture. In its material and symbolic dimensions, social culture animates various forms of proximity between people and between groups: in addition to territorial proximity, social proximity (also online) and institutional proximity matter a lot. This implies that today a local community is not only a place where social culture makes us physically close, but where at least some of the major forms of proximity intersect.

Description: The essay highlights the role played by Trentin in the dialogue with the social partners, which was promoted by the President of the European Commission Jacques Delors with the Val Duchesse talks. It analyzes, in particular, the editing of the social protocol in Maastricht Treaty in 1992, and reflects on the consequences of this collaboration at the national level: his commitment to the Europeanization of CGIL and to the Italian adherence to the parameters set by the Maastricht Treaty. In particular, the agreement reached on the 23rd July 1993, still testifies to the fundamental contribution made by the three unions and, in the case of CGIL by Bruno Trentin, to the anchoring of Italy to the process of European integration and to Euro, and which were the outcomes of Trentin and Delors’ collaboration.

Description: The Naviglio di Ivrea (Turin) sketched in sheet 563r of the Atlantic Code, drew Leonardo’s attention when he was working as hydraulic engineer in the nearby Milan. A research on the rich documentation available in local archives led to identify techniques and materials used to build the Naviglio, often similar to those in Leonardo’s hydraulic studies and drawings, and to show both its interaction with the surrounding territories and the continuous updates in hydraulic engineering from the XV to the XIX centuries. The persisting relevance of the canal through centuries is a testament to Leonardo’s ancient intuition.

Description: Trentin's reflections on the union of rights and the CGIL's European project still appear highly relevant today, in particular his idea of an Italian trade union belonging to the European socialist family in line with Delors' proposal for a Federation of Nation States and with the "Spinelli Group's" battle for the coordination of economic and social policies, the European Constitution and a united Europe in foreign policy and defense. Moreover, nowadays, the definition of a social project attentive to the work universe, in a system of rights recognized for all European citizens, as well as the attention to the issue of lifelong learning and active aging is equally important for trade unions and the left wing in Italy and Europe.

Description: The gaze of the Grand Tour travellers on the Lungarni of Pisa, in the background of the nineteenth-century process of transformation of the banks and buildings that surround it, helping to define its cultural vocation. The turning point coincided with the second post-war period and began with the conversion of the former convent of San Matteo into a national museum, designed by Piero Sanpaolesi. The project is part of the international debate on culture and museum practice, offering important topics for reflection on the relationship between restoration and musealization, museums, city and recovery of river banks. With the theory of museums in diachronic continuity and contiguity of path (Palazzo Reale, Palazzo Lanfranchi, Palazzo Blu, Navi di Pisa and science), the concept of 'system' takes shape, as a set of multiple museums, between them different, but united by the link with the territory that welcomes them, represented by the Arno that crosses the city and its history.
