Beschreibung: An approach to understanding religion that draws on both humanities and natural science but rejects approaches that employ simple monisms and radical dualisms. In Beyond Heaven and Earth, Gabriel Levy argues that collective religious narratives and beliefs are part of nature; they are the basis for the formation of the narratives and beliefs of individuals. Religion grows out of the universe, but to make sense of it we have to recognize the paradox that the universe is both mental and material (or neither). We need both humanities and natural science approaches to study religion and religious meaning, Levy contends, but we must also recognize the limits of these approaches. First, we must make the dominant metaphysics that undergird the various disciplines of science and humanities more explicit, and second, we must reject those versions of metaphysics that maintain simple monisms and radical dualisms. Bringing Donald Davidson's philosophy—a form of pragmatism known as anomalous monism—to bear on religion, Levy offers a blueprint for one way that the humanities and natural sciences can have a mutually respectful dialogue. Levy argues that in order to understand religions we have to take their semantic content seriously. We need to rethink such basic concepts as narrative fiction, information, agency, creativity, technology, and intimacy. In the course of his argument, Levy considers the relation between two closely related semantics, fiction and religion, and outlines a new approach to information. He then applies his theory to discrete cases: ancient texts, modern media, and intimacy.

Beschreibung: A new, biologically driven model of human behavior in which reason is tethered to the evolutionarily older autonomic, instinctive, and associative systems. In Reason and Less, Vinod Goel explains the workings of the tethered mind. Reason does not float on top of our biology but is tethered to evolutionarily older autonomic, instinctive, and associative systems. After describing the conceptual and neuroanatomical basis of each system, Goel shows how they interact to generate a blended response. Goel's commonsense account drives human behavior back into the biology, where it belongs, and provides a richer set of tools for understanding how we pursue food, sex, and politics. Goel takes the reader on a journey through psychology (cognitive, behavioral, developmental, and evolutionary), neuroscience, philosophy, ethology, economics, and political science to explain the workings of the tethered mind. One key insight that holds everything together is that feelings—generated in old, widely conserved brain stem structures—are evolution's solution to initiating and selecting all behaviors, and provide the common currency for the different systems to interact. Reason is as much about feelings as are lust and the taste of chocolate cake. All systems contribute to behavior and the overall control structure is one that maximizes pleasure and minimizes displeasure. Tethered rationality has some sobering and challenging implications for such real-world human behaviors as climate change denial, Trumpism, racism, or sexism. They cannot be changed simply by targeting beliefs but will require more drastic measures, the nature of which depends on the specific behavior in question. Having an accurate model of human behavior is the crucial first step.

Beschreibung: Slope dynamics in volcanic environments comprise a wide spectrum of phenomena, from large lateral collapse to shallow debris remobilization, which may represent a major threat for human communities and infrastructures. Many volcanos built up from the ocean floor and large portions of the volcano edifice are submerged. In these settings, only the edifice’s summit can be investigated by terrestrial remote sensing and in-situ approaches. Growth and destruction, including tectonics and gravitational phenomena, affect entire volcano flanks and are not limited to the physical boundary of the sea level but could comprise their subaqueous parts.

Notizen: Abstract If the sequence of functions ϕj, k is a wavelet frame (Riesz basis) or Gabor frame (Riesz basis), we obtain its perturbation system ψj,k which is still a frame (Riesz basis) under very mild conditions. For example, we do not need to know that the support of ϕ or ψ $$(\hat \phi or\hat \psi )$$ is compact as in [14]. We also discuss the stability of irregular sampling problems. In order to arrive at some of our results, we set up a general multivariate version of Littlewood-Paley type inequality which was originally considered by Lemarié and Meyer [17], then by Chui and Shi [9], and Long [16].

Notizen: Abstract The stability of time-varying autoregressive (AR) models is an important issue in such applications as time-varying spectrum estimation and electroencephalography simulation and estimation. In some cases, such as time-varying spectrum estimation, the models that exhibit roots near unit moduli are difficult to use. Thus a tighter stability condition such as stability with a positive margin is needed. A time-varying AR model is stable with a positive margin if the moduli of the roots of the time-varying characteristic polynomial are somewhat less than unity for every time instant. Recently, a new method for the estimation of the time-varying AR models was introduced. This method is based on the interpretation of the underdetermined time-varying prediction equations as an ill-posed inverse problem that is solved by Tikhonov regularization. The method is referred to as the deterministic regression smoothness priors (DRSP) scheme. In this paper, a stabilization method in which the DRSP scheme is augmented with nonlinear stability constrainst is proposed. The problem is formulated so that stability with a positive margin can also be achieved. The problem is solved iteratively with an exterior point algorithm. The performance of the algorithm is studied with a simulation. It is shown that the proposed approach is well suited to stable modeling of signals containing narrowband transitions.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper, the general class of singular systems with delay and linear constant coefficient singular systems with delay are discussed. First, several definitions of stability are presented for singular systems with delay, and general sufficient stability conditions and instability conditions are obtained. Second, stability and instability are analyzed for linear constant coefficient singular systems with delay.

Notizen: Abstract The purpose of this paper is to analyse the stability properties of a class of multistep methods for second kind Volterra integral equations. Our approach follows the usual analysis in which the kernel function is a priori restricted to a special class of test functions. We consider the class of finitely decomposable kernels. Stability conditions will be derived and compared with those obtained with the simple test equation. It turns out that the new criteria are more severe than the conventional conditions. The practical value is tested by numerical experiments with the trapezoidal rule.

Notizen: Abstract Box schemes (finite volume methods) are widely used in fluiddynamics, especially for the solution of conservation laws. In this paper two box-schemes for elliptic equations are analysed with respect to quadrilateral meshes. Using a variational formulation, we gain stability theorems for two different box methods, namely the so-called diagonal boxes and the centre boxes. The analysis is based on an elementwise eigenvalue problem. Stability can only be guaranteed under additional assumptions on the geometry of the quadrilaterals. For the diagonal boxes unsuitable elements can lead to global instabilities. The centre boxes are more robust and differ not so much from the finite element approach. In the stable case, convergence results up to second order are proved with well-known techniques.
